Jennifer Love Hewitt and her fiance Ross McCall have called off their engagement according to People.
“They broke up over the holidays and have ended their engagement,” says a source close to the couple. “They’re both really sad about this. Even their friends are surprised; they seemed really happy. Everyone just wants the best for both of them.”
The two had been dating for three years and were engaged in November 2007. Ross’ loss will definitely be another man’s gain.

Oprah just donated $365,000 to a small private school Atlanta. Ron Clark Academy, founded in 2007, is innovative in its design and in the website?s own words, uses ?out of the box? teaching methods. Built in a very poor neighborhood of Atlanta, there are only 80 students, who rely mainly on donations to fund their $14,000 a year tuition. Oprah?s donation could fund the tuition for up to 26 students.
The large donation is not out of the blue.Clark has been a guest on Oprah?s show twice, once in 2000 when he won the ?Disney American Teacher of the Year? award, and then again last year when his book, The Essential 55, became a New York Times best-seller.
The school has also recently been in the news for its music-led teaching methods, including a cute rap by students “You can vote however you like,” based on the song “Whatever you like” by T.I., that became an Internet sensation:
Clark and his students became overnight stars during the presidential election when a video of the students performing a political rap they wrote grabbed the public’s attention on YouTube. The children ended up performing the rap, called “Vote However U Like,” on national TV shows including CNN and BET.
Teachers at the school frequently use rapping, dancing and drumming to help students learn.
Clark, who taught in one of New York City’s toughest schools and wrote the best-selling teaching book “The Essential 55,” opened the school last year with proceeds from his book and private donations.
Nearly all of its 80 students are from middle- and low-income households. Parents pay a small part of the tuition and the rest is paid by donors.

Oprah is still stinging from the girl?s school in Africa debacle, during which critics complained that she wasn?t doing enough for American schools. The donation to Ron Clark Academy was made through Oprah?s foundation, which in 2008 gave a total of $4 million to schools in need.
We haven?t heard much about the other schools Oprah donated to, but there are several possible reasons for that. Ron Clark is skilled at getting publicity. He?s been on Oprah twice and his school has received plenty of attention - the fact that the school has survived on donations alone is proof of his media-savvy.
Additionally, this school is highly unusual and innovative in its teaching style, which demands some attention in and of itself. It?s easier to write a story about an exceptional school where kids are inspired than a donation to a school where the students are struggling.

Jennifer Love Hewitt and her fiance, Scottish actor Ross McCall, broke up over Christmas. The couple was first linked nearly three years ago, in the spring of 2006, and got engaged in November, 2007. There was a lot of speculation over when they would make it official, but sadly it doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen for these two. Someone close to the couple confirmed the news to People, which usually doesn’t speculate about these things:
“They broke up over the holidays and have ended their engagement,” says a source close to the couple. “They’re both really sad about this. Even their friends are surprised; they seemed really happy. Everyone just wants the best for both of them.”
Reps for both Hewitt and McCall had no immediate comment.
The Ghost Whisperer star, 29, got engaged to the Scottish actor, 32, in November 2007 after dating for two years.
While the couple hadn?t announced a date, in October Hewitt told PEOPLE her svelte new look was prompted not by those infamous 2007 bikini pictures ? and the ensuing controversy over body image after she took to her blog to defend herself ? but by her upcoming nuptials.
“I’m getting ready to turn 30 and get married and all those things,” Hewitt said. “This year was my year to try to glow from within and feel better.”
McCall, who costarred in the 2001 HBO miniseries Band of Brothers and stars in the USA drama Crash, appeared in one episode of Hewitt’s hit show Ghost Whisperer, in 2006.

It’s too bad that Hewitt and McCall couldn’t make it work. In September there were photographs of them looking like they were in an argument as McCall hauled suitcases to his car, but it was hard to tell if that’s exactly what was going on. Otherwise these two seemed like a very stable and happy couple. They were often photographed out together and were even seen hanging out at the mall recently. McCall seemed like a low-key kind of boyfriend who was content to go to events and support his more famous other half. Their last public appearance that I could find was serving Thanksgiving dinner at the LA Mission on 11/26/08.
For some reason, probably because they both seem like nice, down-to-earth people, I’m kind of hoping for a reconciliation for these two. They always struck me as the type that would have a happy ever after together. If they ultimately weren’t compatible it’s probably for the best that they broke up now before they got married though.

As they mature, they will eventually hate their parents for doing this to them.
In related news, I’m no longer allowed in the maternity ward. Apparently, a new baby is supposed to be a “joyous” occasion. Yea, well, tell that to the kid over there whose mother just snuck out of the hospital. I’m sure he’ll be real happy locked underneath the staircase of his adoptive parents’ house.

Katie Holmes is singlehandedly propping up New York City?s economy, according to Page Six. Despite a dismal real estate market and poor retail sales, Katie?s been shopping her heart out. In fact from the way it?s described, it sounds like she doesn?t have any other hobbies. Except, perhaps, running from body thetans.
As well as regularly frequenting the city’s best restaurants, Holmes is often photographed with her daughter Suri carrying purchases from some of New York’s most expensive shops. The New York Post’s Page Six magazine estimates that, mainly due to her real estate purchases, she has spent more than $14 million (9.6 million) since being in the city.
“While ordinary city dwellers are cutting back, Mrs Cruise has been valiantly doing her bit to boost our economy,” the magazine said. “We tally up a conservative estimate of her 24-week NYC spending spree, and crown her Manhattan’s Most Valued Shopper.” Holmes has reportedly spent a reported $13,987 (9,600) on child care and taking Suri out over the last six months
According to the publication, she and Cruise have bought three new apartments in the building where he has owned his home since 1985. A spokesperson for Cruise has denied the purchases but real estate executive Barbara Corcoran claims they bought a trio of lofts last year. The magazine says a similar, three-bedroom home on the same street is on the market for $4.8 million, (3.3 million) and calculates that the Cruises would have spent $14.4 million (10 million) on their apartments as a result.
Meanwhile the couple is reported to have spent an additional $7,000 (4,800) on installing gym equipment in their home. The publication also claims that Holmes, 30, and Cruise, 46, have spent an estimated $7,315 (5,000) on dining out at top restaurants such as brasserie Balthazar, and sushi restaurant Nobu and more than $17,000 (11,700) on clothes for Holmes and Suri from shops like Hermes and Bonpoint.

Something tells me Tom is footing the bill for most of these purchases. I?m sure Katie?s got some money of her own, but probably not enough to part with $14 million in half a year. What I?d really like to know is how she spent nearly $14,000 on Suri?s childcare in just six months. Those must be some seriously good babysitters. Obviously the vast bulk of the spending was on real estate, which may or may not be a sensible investment. But Tom and Katie have more money than most of Manhattan, so a bad real estate investment or two won?t negatively affect them like it would the rest of us.
In related Katie Holmes news, this is her last week starring in ?All My Sons? on Broadway. No word on whether she?ll stay in New York. It?s often been reported that Tom wants her back in L.A. as soon as possible ? but the couple obviously made some substantial investments in housing in Manhattan, so it seems likely that they?re planning on spending more time on the East Coast.

The eighth season of Scrubs will premiere next week, moved from NBC over to ABC. There were many questions as to whether Scrubs would even have an eighth season, and the mid-season ABC move isn?t striking a lot of fans as the best idea. Judging from the commercials running on ABC, it seems like the once-great series is running on fumes. Joining the cast for this 18-episode mini-season is Courtney Cox as the new, crazy (somewhat waxy-looking) Chief of Medicine. Zach Braff, Donald Faison, John C. McGinley, Judy Reyes and Sarah Chalke have all returned but it seems like at least one of them might be itching to move on to other projects.
One never knows what the show’s irrepressible creator Bill Lawrence might have up his sleeve, and to be sure he’s pulled off quite a feat to land this 18-episode stay of execution. Of course, the fact that “Scrubs” is produced by ABC Studios might have had a little something to do with it. No matter the reason, it’s pretty terrific to see the return of a half-hour this charmingly performed and superbly written, particularly when we’re suffering such a primetime network comedy shortage.
The show hits the ground in midseason form after eight months and one change of venue, integrating a new crop of interns with seamless aplomb and again demonstrating how to fuse dramatic elements into a sitcom without breaking a sweat.
It rolls onto ABC with a double-barreled (a.ka. a two-episode) premiere assault. First up is an episode that introduces the heartless and unethical Dr. Maddox, played by none other than new recurring player Courteney Cox (who surely knows her way around a comedy series and turns in sharply over-the-top work here). She’s surrounded by the usual cast of returning “Scrubs” players led by the underrated Zach Braff along with Sarah Chalke, Donald Faison, the incomparable John C. McGinley and Judy Reyes — long one of TV’s most talented and colorful casts. The opening installment sputters a bit before finding a rhythm in Episode 2 that guest stars Glynn Turman as a dying patient coming to terms with his mortality.
What remains great about “Scrubs” is its politically incorrect tone, one that’s so smooth the offending line is already in the rear-view mirror before you have a chance to work up a good dose of outrage. While universal health care may still be a political pipe dream, laughter remains a medicine we can afford. And “Scrubs” supplies plenty of that without demanding so much as a co-pay.

When Scrubs is good, it?s very, very good. When it?s bad… well, it gets moved to ABC as a mid-season replacement. One of my peeves is when a good television show doesn?t know how to bow out with grace. I feel for the writers and the producers - I think getting bumped from NBC was probably a huge disappointment, and they?re probably just trying to tie up the plot lines for the die-hard fans. I hope that after this mini-season, all the actors involved get good projects, especially Donald Faison, who was always my favorite.

Yet another star is trying to hop on the “celebrity chef” bandwagon, but this time I doubt anyone will believe it. Pop/country singer Jessica Simpson, who is not officially a wife or even a fiancee of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, contributed to a new Dallas Cowboys Family Cookbook, the proceeds of which go to charity. Because, you know, when you think of cooking, you automatically think of Jessica, right? It’s nice that Jess wants to get involved in a charity project - but who is she kidding? Anyone who watched “Newlyweds” knows that Jessica can’t cook to save her life.
She’s not engaged to Tony Romo (yet), but Jessica Simpson is officially a part of the Dallas Cowboys family.
She appears in the 2008 Cowboys Family Cookbook, presented by “the wives of the Dallas Cowboys.”
On page 127, Simpson (who is not photographed) and Romo share their favorite family recipes for a “banana breakfast fruit smoothies” and “no-fat broccoli and cherry tomatoes.”
The two also show off their funny sides in the book’s biographical section, with Simpson listing her occupation as “hairdresser” and Romo stating that he’s a “fence builder.”
Romo — who lists “U2, Coldplay and AC/DC” as among the artists on his iPod (sorry, Jess!) — also reveals that his favorite food is “chicken enchiladas.”

The recipes, unsurprisingly are nothing special - I think my 9-year-old could probably make them without my help. The broccoli and tomato recipe calls for pre-cut, pre-washed vegetables. Is that what Jessica considers cooking?
It sure is interesting that Jessica is considered a “wife of a Dallas Cowboy.” She does like to go on and on about how Tony is her “future husband” and how she wants to have kids with him - but maybe she should wait for Tony to ask her first.

Richard Gere, 59, was seen horsing around on the beach in St. Barts on Saturday with his eight year-old son, Homer. Gere’s wife, Carey Lowell from Law and Order, was under an umbrella as her husband and son goofed off in the water. Gere and Lowell have been married since 2002.
Also photographed on vacation over the holiday was Jude Law, 36, his ex wife Sadie Frost, and their three children. The happy estranged family was photographed out on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil last week Jude’s and Sadie’s children are son Rafferty, 12, daughter Iris, 8, and son Rudy, 6. The couple was together from 1997 to 2003 and have been the subject of reconciliation rumors as they have a friendly co-parenting relationship.
According to IMDB, both Gere and Law have several films coming out next year.

Cruise told Matt Lauer in his “Mea Culpa” return to the Today Show that he regretted his anti-psychiatry Scientology rant in 2005 and that he would try and tone down the rhetoric in the future. He said there was a “time and place” to talk about Scientology and that “I’m just here to entertain people.”
American audiences are knowledgeable and wary enough of the cult for Tom to have to keep it zipped if he wants to improve his image, but apparently Cruise doesn’t feel the same about Spanish people. He is quoted as telling a Spanish magazine that he “cured” his dyslexia with the help of Scientology’s “study tech” developed by it’s founder, failed science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. (It’s somewhat possible Cruise gave these quotes earlier and they’re being rehashed by the magazine, as the Associated Press notes in their coverage. It does sound like a new interview though.)
Actor Tom Cruise said Scientology teachings helped him overcome childhood dyslexia, a Spanish magazine reported.
Cruise was quoted by Spanish magazine XL Semanal as saying he was diagnosed with the learning disability when he was 7 years old.
Cruise said he was often anxious, frustrated and bored as a youth and couldn’t concentrate in class, the magazine reported on its Web site Sunday.
The magazine quoted Cruise as saying he was functionally illiterate when he graduated from school in 1980, but learned to read perfectly as an adult through Scientology technology.
XL Semanal said the interview was conducted in Los Angeles, but did not say when. A transcript of Cruise’s original comments in English was not available.
The Church of Scientology was established in 1945 by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, and claims 10 million members around the world. Cruise and fellow actor John Travolta among its more famed followers.

Scientology’s Study Tech has been widely discredited by education experts, and there are no independent studies to verify it’s effectiveness. Critics say that it is a way for Scientologists to try and slip their belief system unnoticed into a school’s curriculum and indoctrinate new recruits. Success stories largely rely on anecdotal evidence and testimonials.
The Andrew Morton unauthorized biography of Tom Cruise claimed that his relationship with Penelope Cruz was a deliberate move to try and expand the Scientology cult’s empire into Spain and Latin America. The actor also had a brief relationship with Sofia Vergara that Morton says dissolved once she learned she was being used as a PR tool for the cult.
If Cruise did give these quotes, it seems like a calculated statement to try and hype Scientology to Spanish-speaking audiences. Cruise seems to know that there’s a “time and place” to discuss the cult, and that American audiences are too savvy to buy it. Hopefully Spanish audiences are too.

Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell have had twin girls. US Magazine reports that family friend Howard Stern made the announcement on his show this morning. There is not much more information about the girls and we’re not sure of their names yet or even exactly when they were born. (If you listened to this Stern this morning and have more details, please comment.)
Romijn said she tried Clomid a year before she got preganant, but said she was off the fertility drug for months before the twins were conceived naturally without in vitro fertilization:

In November, Romijn, 36, told Page Six magazine she was ready to give birth. (She had to skip pal Stern’s October wedding because she was put on bed rest.)
“I can’t move anymore… I’m a beached whale!” she said. “I have not been without a bra this entire pregnancy. I refuse. I’m not taking any chances. I’m determined to keep the puppies up!”

She also revealed that the twins were conceived without the help of in vitro fertilization or the fertility drug Clomid.
“A year ago, we tried Clomid for a couple of months unsuccessfully,” Romijn said. “But by the second month, I was like, ‘Ahhh! I hate this!’ I think when you start messing with your own hormones, it’s crazy-making.”
Last fall Romijn said in all seriousness that she wanted to name one of her daughters Dolly after Dolly Parton as she’s a huge fan of the country legend. O’Connell mentioned the names Mary-Kate and Ashley for the babies after the famous Olsen Twins, and said it was a joke but added that they “really thought about that.” Hopefully everyone is well and we’ll have to wait and see what the babies are named.
Romijn and O’Connell recently released a video through Funny or Die that was a spoof on Romijn’s shape shifting role in X-Men as the Mystique. Romijn changed into different people from bed, including comedian Jerry Minor and Perez Hilton. The 36 year-old actress spent the last few months of her pregnancy on bed rest.

I saw Troyer on “The Surreal Life” and he was a letch who drank way too much, so I can believe it. He’s a small guy and doesn’t have much capacity to drink, but Gallen says that Troyer would knock down a 12 pack of beer and a liter of vodka in a single day. Last year, several film and television critics pointed out that the best parts for actresses over the age of forty were on television. There’s Kyra Sedgwick on The Closer, Edie Falco on The Sopranos, Holly Hunter on Saving Grace, and Mariska Hargitay on Law & Order: SVU. Actresses of a certain age are in demand on the small screen, playing fully-realized characters that don?t rely on twenty-something naivet.
Glenn Close has joined this grand tradition of great ?older? actresses enjoying a career Renaissance in television. Last year, the first season of FX?s Damages premiered to overwhelmingly positive reviews. The show found a considerable niche audience of adults with attention spans who wanted to watch good acting and good stories - the numbers were good for cable, anyway.
For those of you not watching, it?s a difficult show to explain. Calling it a ?legal drama? makes it sound like yet another Law & Order spin-off, which couldn?t be further from the truth. It?s sort of like Lost, only set in New York, not a mysterious island. There?s coincidences and conspiracies, the timeline goes back and forth, jumping all over the place. You don?t know who to trust, which character is supposed to be ?good?, which one you?re supposed to have sympathy for. The motto of the show could be:
“There is no sympathy.” Glenn Close sat down for an interview with Newsday to talk Damages, fragility and backgammon.
?Damages? is about world-famous, stop-at-nothing litigator Patty Hewes (Glenn Close), who wrapped a big victory last year that gave new shades of meaning to the word pyrrhic. In battle with evil, Enron-styled dark lord Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson), Patty found it necessary to snuff a dog, torment witnesses (leading to their ruination or death) and finally blackmail Frobisher into chucking his whole fortune (only to double-cross him in the last episode). Did we mention: She also tried to kill her colleague Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne), the daughter she never had (not counting the one, Julia, who died at birth).
In the first season, Wall Street villain Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson) survived a gunshot from an embittered former colleague, only to realize that he is the most hated man on Earth. Hewes’ junior partner, Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne), lives with the knowledge that her boss tried to kill her. She’s also working with the FBI to bring Hewes down. Then, there is Lady Macbeth herself. She has blood on her hands, which nothing can ever wash away. Her guilt is towering, but then so is her ambition and idealism. Patty Hewes is a very good woman. She is also a very bad one. There was the scene that found her sitting in a lawn chair. Informed by her Uncle Pete (Tom Aldredge) that Ellen had been killed, Patty showed remorse that seemed to spread from her legs, to her torso, and then to her head. Finally, she burst into a full-body volcanic eruption of horror and regret. Patty got over that. But then Frobisher’s lawyer, Ray Fiske (Zeljko Ivanek, who won an Emmy for best supporting actor), put a gun in his mouth and blew off the back of his head in front of her. That unspeakable memory has been harder to shake.
Simply put, Close’s Hewes is the most extraordinarily complicated, maddeningly obtuse character - male or female - on television at the moment. So, yeah. That’s why Close sounds pooped.
“At the end of last season when Fiske shot himself in front of me, that spun Patty to a place she’s never been before, in a place of not being totally in control,” said Close by phone from the “Damages” set in Queens, where cast and crew were nearing completion on the 13th and final episode for this season. (FX has already ordered a third.) “She’s still in that place of being highly traumatized … still a little fragile.”
Hewes, fragile? And there are other unexpected surprises in store this season. But first there’s a character to be revealed, and that is part of what you’ll be seeing as well. “You get to see a little bit more of the private side of Patty Hewes,” Close says.
After the Frobisher victory, Hewes is nursing her psyche back to health while trying to figure out what to do next. Funding a huge charity? Seems like a good idea, though she has to convince a major benefactor, Sam Arsenault (Broadway’s James Naughton, who will sing in a future episode), to kick in some dough.
Meanwhile, out of the dark, quite literally, appears an old acquaintance, Daniel Purcell, played by William Hurt. The last time Hurt and Close appeared together on-screen was in 1983’s “The Big Chill.” Of the reunion, Close says, “It was just a wonderful time with him [and] we have these competitive backgammon games in between [takes].”
The Purcell-Hewes relationship has a history, too. He’s an energy consultant who has the goods on a major energy company’s dirty tricks. He wants and demands Patty’s help as part of an old debt. She’s reluctant to give it.
“He’s very much a character who’s going to allow us to explore a substantial part of … Hewes’ history,” says Todd A. Kessler, one of “Damages’” three show-runners - the others are his brother, Glenn, who also plays FBI agent L.J. Werner, and Daniel Zelman. That history will include “a huge surprise for the audience, but just like Glenn Close and William Hurt, they have an equally rich history together and a lot of juicy stuff to discover about each other.”

I have to admit that when the first season aired, I missed it. Then one weekend a few months ago, FX ran an all-day marathon, and I got hooked. It really is the kind of show to buy on DVD, so you can watch the whole season all at once. For the second season, which airs Wednesday at 10 p.m., Academy Award-winners William Hurt and Marcia Gay Harden join the cast, and it looks *so good*.

CBS?s The Mentalist, starring hot Australian actor Simon Baker, is one of the few new shows to become a big hit. The Mentalist is about showbiz psychic-turned-police investigator, played by Baker. The show is doing so well that CBS just locked up Baker with a five-year contract. Baker is one of those good guys, settled down forever with his wife (and fellow Aussie) Rebecca Rigg and father to three kids: Stella, Claude, and Harry. Baker sat down with Parade magazine to discuss America, politics, and family.
?[The Mentalist] is a good outlet for me,? he said. ?In this economic climate, we?re lucky. I signed for five years.?
Baker?s been living in the United States for 13 years. Knowing how fiercely Aussies love their own country, I off-handedly asked him, ?Any interest in becoming an American??
Simon stopped talking, stared at me, and said, ?Funny you mention it.? Then he dropped this unexpected news: ?The morning after your election in November, I said to my wife Rebecca, ?You know, I?m thinking about becoming an American,? and then she said that she felt the same way.
?I don?t follow sports here,? he said. ?But politics has sort of taken its place. I followed the race closely. It?s a tricky area, because I don?t want to be offensive, and I had no party loyalty. But electing Obama was this country being very grown-up. It was such a positive step for the U.S. to become a part of the world again after the last eight years. Our two sons were born here, so they?re already Americans, but myself, Rebecca, and our daughter Stella are still Australians.?
Has he done anything about it yet?
?No,? Baker told me. ?The show keeps me too busy. But it?s going to happen. People always talk about how great America is, but actions speak better than words.?
Baker first came to the States in 1995 from Sydney with his wife, Rebecca Rigg, a film actress. His first role in a major film was in L.A. Confidential, and he went on from there. ?A few years ago, we went back to Australia,? he said. ?But after seven months there, I found I missed America and our friends here. Staying in Sydney would have been like conceding defeat.? His daughter Stella was in Chicago for a high school debate when Simon and I spoke. His boys Claude and Harry are now 9 and 7, respectively. Simon himself turns 40 this July. ?I think I?m going to be fine,? he said. ?I stay fit, mostly mucking about with the boys. And I love the wisdom that comes with age.?

It makes sense that Baker and his wife would seek American citizenship if two of their children are citizens. Add to that the stability of a long-term contract on a hit television show, and it?s no surprise Baker would want to become an American. The family has close ties to other Australian ex-pats: Nicole Kidman, a pal of Rebecca and Simon?s, is their son Harry?s godmother and Naomi Watts is their son Claude?s godmother.

In a month or so, the Brangelina brood will most likely relocate from Berlin to Los Angeles so Angelina can start principal filming on Salt, an espionage thriller she signed on to several months ago. Angelina?s casting was a minor scandal considering she replaced everybody?s favorite Xenu on a Zebra, Tom Cruise. Obviously, some necessary script changes needed be made. Angelina Jolie is good, but she can?t play a character named ?Edwin Salt?. But the changes that have already been made aren?t good enough for Angelina, and someone at the studio is already leaking negative info to Britain?s Daily Mail.
After replacing Tom Cruise in a new movie, Angelina Jolie is determined to have the film made her way …or not at all. Cruise was to have played the title role in Columbia?s spy thriller Edwin A. Salt.
But negotiations broke down and Angelina, 33, was hired instead, leading to a hurried change of title to Edwina Salt. No sooner had her casting been announced than Angelina, according to a source, ordered it to be changed again, to Evelyn Salt.
Now the actress is demanding a script overhaul by top screenwriter Brian Helgeland, an Oscar winner with L.A. Confidential, who is involved in the project.
?Angelina is determined to make sweeping changes before filming starts,? I?m told.
?She?s demanding the writers improve the dialogue before she sets foot on set.?
Sources say Angelina envisages Evelyn Salt as a rival to the blockbusting Bourne Identity series, starring Matt Damon.

?Demanding? that a character?s name be changed from Edwina to Evelyn doesn?t seem that hardcore. Evelyn is a pretty name, and more current than Edwina. The only Edwina I?ve ever known was the character of Edwina on Absolutely Fabulous. Great, hilarious character, but not the name for an espionage thriller?s heroine. And could it be that many of the script changes are simply changing the character’s gender?
As far as trying to make Salt more like the Bourne series, it just seems like it?s in the studio?s best interests. The Bourne series was not only a huge financial win for everyone involved, but the series also re-wrote what action films could be and should be. Everybody from the producers of the James Bond movies to Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have cited the Bourne films as the best way to make a politically and entertaining ?current? action film. I seriously doubt that Angelina is the only one involved in Salt who is trying to make the film more like the Bourne series in style and substance.

Finally, Ralph Fiennes has started doing some interviews to promote his supporting role in The Reader. I say “finally? because Kate Winslet was doing the bulk of the promotional duties, which is no surprise for two reasons. First, this seems to be a film season where only actresses are doing promotion (like Reese Witherspoon in Four Christmases). Secondly, after finally reading an interview with Ralph Fiennes - who’s one of my favorite actors - I completely understand why The Reader?s producers might not want this profoundly talented and profoundly weird man opening his mouth any more.
Ralph Fiennes starts out the Times interview by reenacting a scene of Ben Gazarra in Tales of Ordinary Madness. The scene, in Ralph?s words, is ?literally about trying to get inside her womb… this unhappy man [Gazzara] is with a woman, and he literally wants to climb back inside her?. This sets the tone for the rest of the interview.
On any other day this might have seemed like an odd skit to come from the 46-year-old star of The English Patient, Schindler’s List and two Harry Potter movies (where he played the boy wizard’s evil nemesis Voldemort). But today Fiennes is on fire. He’s more than halfway through a mesmerising run of Sophocles’ brutally unforgiving Oedipus at the National Theatre and is thus somehow fantastically engorged with life’s Big Ideas.
?For me the lines in the play that resonate continually are, ?I want to know the secret of my birth’ and ?I do not know who I am!’? he says, dropping his voice to a whisper and running a hand slowly over his shaven pate. The haircut was his idea, he explains, to make him feel more naked on stage, but it has a powerfully imposing effect that, together with today’s outfit of blazer and denims with turn-ups, creates the impression of a patrician bouncer. ?And isn’t that the journey that most of us are on?? he continues, undaunted, transfixed by the tragic clarity of his words. ?Who are we? What are we doing? And where did we come from??
The play is agony, he says. The play might destroy him yet, he adds. And the play, as we all know, is about mothers. It’s all their fault. They are the site of the eternal return - that metaphorical place to which we, according to Sophocles, Freud and Fiennes, spend our life returning. We are trying, says Fiennes, to re-enter the womb (hence the skit). And that, he says, can sometimes get in the way of a decent romantic relationship.
?There is a tension in relationships between wanting to return to the womb, but also wanting to be free,? he says, with impressive candour for a man who was, until they split in 2006, often described as being in a vaguely ?maternal? relationship with the actress Francesca Annis (17 years his senior). ?Because sometimes the woman’s attentions can be overly maternal, and you want to go, ?Ahhhh!’?

The whole ?mothers, it?s all their fault? comment is such a horrible way to sum up both Oedipus and the larger point Ralph was making. To be fair to the source material, for years Oedipus?s mother never knew she was sleeping with her son, and when she did find out, she killed herself. When Oedipus found out, all he did was claw out his eyes. Whoops, was that a spoiler? My point: mothers always get the blame.
Ralph seems to be working through some issues with women in general, not just his mother. The conversation that started with such gems as ?he literally wants to climb back inside her? and ?I want to know the secret of my birth? is taking the logical course to Ralph?s current film, The Reader. Fiennes plays a German lawyer reflecting on a love affair he had with a woman in her thirties (played by Kate Winslet), when his character was fifteen. Sometimes the actor finds the material, and sometimes the material finds them, eh?
We move on to The Reader, which has its own share of provocations and mother issues. These are in the erotic and Oedipalised relationship between Fiennes’s younger screen self (played by David Kross) and an older, mysterious and illiterate former Nazi, Hanna Schmitz (Kate Winslet). The provocations, says Fiennes, are in the plot, ?and the idea that Hanna’s illiteracy could be an excuse for her joining the SS in the first place. I don’t accept that she couldn’t make a moral judgment about joining the SS just because she’s illiterate. And I think that’s a troubling area.?
Fiennes himself, you suspect, has little estimation of his own talents. His acting, it seems, is itself beyond acting, part of his own delicate process of individuation (remember, ?I want to know the secret of my birth??). All this, a Freudian might add, emerges in the dense undergrowth of childhood, and here it seems particularly poignant and indeed fitting that Fiennes can trace everything back to, yes, his mother, the writer Jennifer Lash.
The Fiennes family history is well-worn lore, and usually involves his farmer-turned-photographer father Mark and mother Jennifer dragging their seven-strong brood (including brother Joseph, sisters Martha and Sophie and foster brother Michael Emery) on a peripatetic childhood whirl through Dorset, Suffolk, West Cork and Salisbury.
In conversation the family tends to describe the period with quasi affection as a time of love without much material comfort. But today, focusing exclusively on Lash, Fiennes is a little more unsparing. He says that she had her own demons, and that, ?in her own way, she could make you feel like you hadn’t hit the mark, or you simply weren’t good enough?.

When Ralph Fiennes appeared on an episode of ?Inside the Actor?s Studio?, he wept when the conversation turned to his mother and her death. While I?m glad to see that Ralph has stepped outside of his grief and is talking openly about his mother and his issues, my guess is that The Reader?s publicity team might want this extraordinarily talented actor to tone it down a bit for this promotional tour.
Note by Celebitchy: I saw a special on Bravo many years ago called “The Family Fiennes” about Ralph’s family. He comes from a large family and has four brothers and two sisters, including an adopted foster brother. His mother was portrayed as a wonderful nurturing woman who tried to instill a love of art and literature in her children. If there were any issues between Ralph or any of the other children and their mom you couldn’t tell from the Bravo special and they all spoke very highly of her. Ralph’s mom published a few books under her maiden name, Jennifer Lash, including a travelogue and a work of fiction about an abandoned boy called Blood Ties. It was reminiscent of DH Lawrence and well written.

For the first post-birth interview, some celebrities go high-class. A glowing appearance on Oprah, perchance a classy little interview on Today. But not Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz. These two decided to give their exclusive interview away to Extra, the Toyota Camry of entertainment journalism, not the best, but at least it?s not Inside Edition. OK! Magazine has the details.
Ashlee talks about going back to blonde and Pete talks about giving away Bronx?s pictures for free on his website. Ashlee looks good as a redhead and as a brunette, but perhaps she thinks blonde hair helps with her career? As for the baby pictures, the rumor was that no tabloid wanted to pay for them, something Wentz still denies, saying they received multiple offers. The only thing I found interesting was when Wentz talks about how he cusses like a sailor.
Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz have been decidedly low-key about the newest addition to their family, choosing to introduce six-week-old Bronx Mowgli to the world on the Fall Out Boy’s website, rather than selling the pictures.
In keeping with their relaxed attitude, the first-time parents are only just now going on TV, sitting down with Extra at Las Vegas’ Pure Nightclub to chat about life with their little guy and their decision not to sell his first photos.
?People came and made offers to us,” Pete reveals, “[But] it seems strange that your first picture would be next to ?Who?s hot! Who?s not!?”
As for his hopes for 2009, Pete is all about Bronx and seeing how he experiences the world. ?The thing I?m looking forward to is watching Bronx discover life?the first time he laughs, first time he crawls?? he says. ?It?s kind of cool to go back to someone else and care for someone and have responsibility? It?s one of the few aspects of life where the clichs are totally true.?
Part of spending time with Bronx also plays into Pete’s New Year’s resolution ? watching his mouth. ?I?m working on not swearing around Bronx?I know I have a bit of a bad mouth,” he admits, while Ashlee chimes in, ?I?m more of a ?Gee golly!? kind of person.?
Post-birth life has also brought many changes for Ashlee, including one very noticeable alteration to her look. ?I couldn?t put bleach to my head while I was pregnant, so I?m happy to be blonde again,” she reveals, adding that’s also working to get back her pre-baby bod. “I’m being a mom. I’m breast-feeding and when I get a chance to work out, I’m working out.”
Pete’s got nothing but love for his wife as she is, as he adds, “I think she’s a babe!”

Good Lord, are you asleep yet? But I appreciate the sentiments behind not trying to cuss in front of your child. My mother swears that one of my first phrases was ?goddamn it?. Babies really do learn their communication skills from their parents, and it helps if every other word out a parent?s mouth isn?t something that would make a pimp blush. And I totally believe that Ashlee?s curses are of the ?gee golly? variety, that seems really genuine. I wonder what Pete cusses about.

Some people might think that Madonna is pushing her daughter into performing. I suspect that the move has more to do with the fact that Lourdes has just moved to a new city following her parents break up, and she could use a place to build confidence. As much as I believe Madonna to be a narcissistic bitch, I think her parenting skills are fine.
The school doesn?t actually specialize in educating children in the performing arts sector, as the Daily Mail is suggesting, but is focused on children who are already involved in such endeavors, including sports or other pursuits that require them to have a flexible learning timetable. This school has possibly been chosen for the children because of their need to travel to London to visit their father/stepfather and this allows some flexibility for that.
Of course, little Lola will probably follow her mother into entertainment ? look at her style, she?s only 14 and already dressing for the spotlight. Some teenagers would dress down to avoid the attention, clearly Lourdes is not one of them.

Jett Travolta, 16, died after suffering a seizure and a fall in the bathroom of his parents’ vacation home in the Bahamas. His body was discovered on Friday morning. Police sources have him falling and drowning in the bathtub late Thursday night, a claim his parents deny. They say he fell in the morning right before he was found and that he was well cared for and watched by two in-house nannies. Jett leaves behind his parents, John Travolta and Kelly Preston, and sister Ella, 8.
Jett was rumored to have suffered from autism, which often co-exists with a seizure disorder but does not have seizures listed among the symptoms. Jett’s mother, Kelly Preston, has only stated that her son had Kawasaki disease, a rare immune disorder caused by early childhood exposure to toxic chemicals.
In May of 2007, a story came out that John Travolta and Kelly Preston were ignoring their son Jett’s autism. It was based on an interview with one of their neighbors, a restaurant owner who happened to have a four year-old autistic child and recognized some of the symptoms in Jett when the family came in to his establishment to eat. The neighbor told Hollywood, Interrupted that he asked Travolta to get involved in autism fundraisers and was rebuffed. According to this guy’s diagnosis from afar, John and Kelly weren’t getting the proper therapy for their child and were letting him eat junk food and play video games. The neighbor didn’t explain how he knew that John Travolta and Kelly Preston were neglecting Jett, and it seemed to be based on just seeing them in his restaurant and getting handed a Scientology booklet by Travolta.
Scientology does not recognize autism
John Travolta and Kelly Preston are Scientologists. Scientology is a well-documented harmful cult that does not recognize autism as a disorder, does not allow followers to use psychiatric medication, and often blames sufferers for mental illness.
We don’t know if Jett had autism or what his care was like
All we have is rumor and one guy’s questionable assessment that suggests Jett had poor care. We don’t know if he had autism, if he was receiving therapy or treatment, or if his parent’s belief system contributed to his death in any way. From the reports that Travolta’s people are giving TMZ, it sounds like Jett had very good care and that it was a terrible accident.
Jett was on anti-convulsant medication for a long time
According to the Travoltas, Jett was on anti-convulsant medication for years but it eventually stopped working for him. They say they met with neurologists who decided to take him off the medication as it was no longer effective. Even with medication people can still suffer from seizures and accidents do happen. Hunter Tylo’s son died last year at 19 after having a seizure and falling into a pool and no one blamed her or her husband for his death.
There’s little reason to blame the parents and it’s hurtful
Now that John and Kelly have suffered an immeasurable loss, people are making the unjustified logical leap that they must be responsible in some way since their “religion” doesn’t recognize autism as a disorder and preaches against the use of psychiatric drugs. I’m as against Scientology as the next person, but you can’t take some small pieces of information and jump to conclusions. It’s fine to speculate when it involves someone’s love life, but when it involves the death of child it can be hurtful to say the least.
We don’t know all the details surrounding his condition or his death, some early stories have been inaccurate, and even the medical experts among us couldn’t pass judgment without being privy to the facts.
Let’s not blame this suffering family for something we have no clue about. They’ve already lost their son and none of us know the circumstances of their home life or what happened that led to their son’s death.
John Travolta has issued a statement on his website about his son’s death. He says, in part: “Jett was the most wonderful son that two parents could ever ask for and lit up the lives of everyone he encountered. We are heartbroken that our time with him was so brief. We will cherish the time we had with him for the rest of our lives.”
Update: Many of you have pointed out that John Travolta’s brother Joey made a documentary about autism in 2006 called “Normal People Scare Me,” in which John and Jett were not involved. It was thought to have been directed in some way at his brother.
The skepticism about Jett’s treatment is completely understandable given his parent’s involvement in Scientology. Of course there needs to be a thorough investigation and maybe the increased focused on the very dangerous practices of Scientology will finally help bring this criminal organization down. They need to be tried under the RICO act in the US.
All that said, I’m very disappointed at other media outlets’ rush to judgment. Look at what happened with the Heath Ledger case. The initial details were wrong and people condemned and dismissed him as a drug addict. That was a full grown man who had died from a drug interaction, and this is a teen boy who was disabled and suffered seizures. He’s barely dead and people are already saying “His parents are Scientologists, told you so.”
