Rihanna hosted yet another ?Diamond Ball? last night in New York. Rih?s Diamond Balls are fundraisers for her Clara Lionel Foundation, which raises money for schools, educational supplies and health care in developing countries. Rihanna is low-key about it, but she does a ton of great work in Barbados and in developing nations, and her foundation raises a lot of money with these Diamond Balls.
For last night?s fundraiser, Rihanna wore a Ralph & Russo mullet dress which I dislike. I?ll give her some credit – she went with a more conservative look, which is appropriate for the event. But this dress is just bad. I feel like Rihanna has gained some weight this year and she?s totally fine with that, but she doesn?t know how to dress herself when she?s slightly bigger? This Ralph & Russo gown makes her look a lot heavier than she actually is, I?m just sayin?. I also think she chose this gown as sort of a ?blank slate? look to feature her Chopard jewelry – Chopard sponsors Rihanna?s Diamond Balls, and she wore one necklace from her Rihanna Loves Chopard collection, and one necklace from Chopard?s High Jewelry Collection.
This year?s Diamond Ball had a good turn-out – Kendrick Lamar performed, after all – and this was the first big event for Beyonce and Jay-Z since the twins were born. Bey and Jay didn?t walk the red carpet, but they were photographed inside the event.

True or false: Angelina Jolie has no style. I think that?s false, but I have my reasons. If we?re saying that Angelina has had bad red-carpet style for the better part of a decade, then sure, I?ll agree with that. But I actually think she has a good eye for separates and professional attire. She has a good eye for suits, pencil skirts, coats, blouses, tote bags, sweaters and well-cut slacks. I?d actually love it she started wearing those kinds of clothes to premieres instead of trying to figure out how to work a sparkly sack dress or whatever.
Anyway, these are photos of Angelina at the United Nations yesterday. She wore a flattering mid-length pencil skirt and simple blouse. This is how she should dress more often, right? Right. And I love her red-burgundy purse. Angelina and the kids flew to New York from Toronto a few days ago, and I guess Angelina wanted to check in with her UN friends. She had some kind of meeting/photo-op with UN Secretary General Antnio Guterres. Guterres used to be the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, so they?ve known each other for probably fifteen years or so.

I’m actually surprised that it took Jennifer Garner so long to get in on the celebrity lifestyle business. Her buddy Jessica Biel’s family restaurant venture isn’t going too well though so maybe she wanted to bide her time and find the perfect side project. Garner announced on Instagram earlier this week that she’s co-founded an organic baby food subscription service called Once Upon a Farm. (Am I an a-hole for rolling my eyes at that company name?) It seems like “co-founded” is being used loosely as Once Upon a Farm has existed since 2015 and Garner joined this year, but maybe it accurately describes her role. Here’s Garner’s announcement on Instagram.

Here are some photos of Maria Sharapova at a promotional event for her book this week in New York. The way she?s posing in these photos is funny to me, especially the one where she?s crouched down as if she’s in a shed, trying to make herself look like a small, wispy white girl who has been forever-dominated by an intimidating and ?thick? black woman. Yeah. Anyway, did you also know that Maria has spent her press tour trying to explain away her doping ban? It?s true. I?ve been meaning to link to this Deadspin story all week, so please read this before we get to Maria?s latest BS. It?s an interesting anecdotal story of an amateur athlete who decided to use meldonium to see if it actually did enhance her performance. Guess what? Meldonium does help. And Maria still couldn?t beat Serena Williams. Some highlights from Maria latest interview with the BBC:
On how Eugenie Bouchard called her a cheater: “I think those are comments not based on facts, and therefore I don’t take them into consideration.”
On Andy Murray?s comments on doping: “I don’t think it’s for them to really have an opinion, because they don’t have the facts. So, you know, I think that those are the types of words that make headlines and they will be used as headlines. But ultimately, this is my career, and I faced it head on, and I admitted my mistake, and I went about it and I served my suspension and now I’m back.”
On meldonium not really being performance-enhancing: “The problem I have with that is there’s no proof of what it does, and no one can give you that proof. What is the ban based on?”
On first watching the Williams sisters: “My father told me, you gotta watch and you gotta study them. And I was like, no, I don’t want them to see me studying them! There was a shed behind the court they were practising on, and I watched them through this little peephole.”

The reason there?s ?no proof? about meldonium being a PED is because it?s some weird Eastern European drug which hasn?t been fully researched. I would also argue that the ?proof? that it?s a PED is that the ITF banned that sh-t (the proof is the ban). And if there’s no proof of what it does, THEN WHY WAS SHE TAKING IT? And why didn’t she have it on her list of medications which she submits to the ITF every year? As for Maria calling criticism fake news? how very Trumpian of her. How Russian!
Meanwhile, Maria was also on The View this week and she was asked specifically about the dog-whistle racism in her book about Serena being ?tall? and ?thick? and ?intimidating.? When Maria was called out about that, this is how she answered:
?I think you have to understand that I?m speaking from an image of being a 17-year-old girl and seeing Serena Williams in front of me for the first time. I wasn?t physically developed at all, I did not belong at a Wimbledon final, so everything about her presence was intimidating to me. The whole experience of playing Serena as a 17-year-old girl was incredible, because I grew up practicing in an academy in Florida for so many years and I watched Serena and Venus practice at the academy, hundreds of spectators were watching ? literally I was watching the next 25 years of my life right in front of me, unknowingly. And then you find yourself at 17 across the net from her. It was like someone just put me inside a TV screen and said ?here you are, you?ve got a chance to play Serena.? It was our second meeting and the first one, we had just played a few months beforehand, I lost easily, I thought it would take me years to get to her level. She was way above and beyond my level at the time. So playing against her, she was the two-time defending champion, and I speak about that rivalry in the book because that match was a huge part of my life and my career, it?s where it all started for me.?

So, once again, Maria is using Serena to humble-brag and dog-whistle in about twenty different ways. Maria is still painting herself as this tiny little girl who never thought she would ever beat the big black woman and it?s still so amazing to her that she beat Serena because Serena is so thick and so black, right? Ugh.

We’ve only reported on Lake Bell in a standalone post one other time. That was three weeks ago, when she was promoting her second directorial effort, I Do Until I Don’t, which is about the absurdity of relationships. The trailer makes it look funny as hell but unfortunately it only has a 30% on Rotten Tomatoes and is being called a middle-of-the-road romcom. I still want to see it though, if only on demand. As I mentioned in the last post, Lake goes to events and she works steadily but she’s not a hustler at all. You get the sense that doing heavy promotion is new for her, like she’s not conscious of giving soundbite quotes that will earn headlines.
Lake has a new interview with comedian Tig Notaro, whom Lake cast in an earlier movie, her 2013 directorial debut In a World. (Tig met her future wife, actress Stephanie Allynne, on that set.) They have an easy rapport which was fun to read. This interview was featured in the NY Post, where they have some photos of Lake in comically oversized clothing trying to look like a fashionista. Some of the outfits are flattering though. Here’s the relevant part of the interview:
TN: Now that you?ve done it twice ? writing, directing and acting in a film ? what have you learned?
LB: There?s no phoning it in. I knew I needed to have copious amounts of preparation. And on top of it, I was a mom for the first time while making this movie [?I Do ? Until I Don?t.?]. So I had a 1 -year-old at home while I was taking on all these things. Taking care of thyself is equally important.
TN: It reminds me of one of my favorite sayings: The best gift you can give anyone is a well-lived life of your own. If someone?s happy, healthy, functioning, you don?t worry about them.
LB: Even when I got married, there?s this romantic idea that you become one. And that is bulls?t. I think you have to remain singularly powerful and on your own two feet, but just side by side. And walking forward in the same direction.
TN: There?s so much fear around love, it?s hard to believe the growth and joy and everything that comes with it. I feel like my opportunities have escalated and I wish everyone could feel that way.
LB: The reason I love Scott so much is because his take on love and life is so that. Scott, pretty openly, expresses that the braver path is not to bail, but to jump in full force with all your heart and soul and the optimism to meet eye-to-eye with someone who feels the same way. And when s?t gets muddy and rough, to actually hash it out. He got ?Lake? tattooed huge nine days after meeting me.
TN: What were you thinking when he did that?
LB: It?s on his back. So, we had just had sexual intercourse, and I had not noticed because we were looking at each other in the eyeballs and he rolled over, then I noticed it and I was like, completely without words. I couldn?t speak in the moment.
He was like, ?I just got this? ? so casual! And I was like, ?That was the tattoo you got in New York?? He was just like, ?Yeah,? so nonchalant. And I read it and I remember looking at him and being like, ?Who is this person who is so fearless in his resolve?? He?s full on. I was so crazy about him from the moment I saw him ? he?s just a magic person.

I did like Lake’s thoughts on working on marital issues and remaining true to yourself and your priorities while headed toward the same goals. That was well put. Lake’s husband is a tattoo artist, they’ve been together since 2011 and they have two children, daughter Nova, almost three, and son Ozzi, four months. I guess some people just meet and know that they’re right for each other immediately. It takes me a long time to warm up to people so I can’t relate to that.
What would you do if a guy you were seeing got a tattoo of your name just nine days after you met? In theory I would run so far away. Even if the guy had a lot of other tattoos, like Lake’s husband presumably, there’s just something reckless and impulsive about that. Plus it screams “stalker.” Also, I wonder if having a tattoo for someone makes you less likely to break up with them or them with you. There might be a lot of guilt breaking up with someone with your name on them. It’s like ?how can you leave me baby? You know I got this tattoo for you.? Also, if you’re the tattoo-ee you might think ?I can’t break up with him, I liked him enough to get his name tattooed and lasers hurt.”

Kelly Clarkson was one of the prominent women who came out in support of Kesha in her allegations of sexual misconduct and bullying against music producer Dr. Luke. Kelly’s support spoke volumes because it stemmed from her own experience of having worked with him. In a recent radio interview she admitted her situation was different from Kesha?s in that there wasn’t sexual harassment but claimed that Dr. Luke ?just lied a lot,? and that, ?he?s difficult to work with, kind of demeaning.? Kelly admitted to Z100 radio show that she was so disgusted at being forced by her record label to work with Luke, she refused a song writing credit for her song My Life Would Suck Without You because she didn’t even want her name next to his. It?s a powerful statement made even more so by the fact that without a writing credit, she can?t get royalties. Given that song?s popularity, Kelly?s act of defiance cost her millions.
Kelly Clarkson has revealed she willingly lost “hundreds of thousands of dollars,” “or millions,” in royaltiesfor refusing to associate herself withDr. Luke as aco-writer on her 2009 single”My Life Would Suck Without You.”
In a new interview with Z100, the singer said,”I was making a point to the people working with me, going, ‘This is how much I didn’t want to do this.’ I don’t care about the money. I don’t care about, oh, ‘You’re going to be the most famous person ever if you do this.’ That’s not what holds weight in my life.”
Last year,Clarkson allegedthat those who worked at herrecord label at the time, RCA (owned by parent company Sony), said they would not releaseher album if she did not work with Dr. Luke.
“Basically, they were gonna sit on my record unless I did what they wanted. I was so frustrated because I literally said, ‘Anyone in the world but this one person. I will work with anyone you want to put in my path.’ I love people. I think that’s apparent. I think I’m a nice person, that’s apparent. It was just this one thing, and I asked not to work with Dr. Luke just because I had not a good experience with him,” said Clarkson. “If an artist like me, Igenerally love everyone.You have to really be a special kind of … for me not to like you.”
“They brought up writing credit at the end,” she went on.”They were like, ‘Well, you changed the song.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t want my name near his. I want to pretend this didn’t happen in my life and I want to forget it.’”

I admit ignorance to how sleazy entertainment deals can be. I still get shocked by how bad it gets. Kelly also appeared on the Elvis Duran radio show and spoke more about saying ?no? to label’s demands. When one of the DJs asked if labels really did that, Kelly?s response was ?are you kidding me?? And let?s remember that Kelly has the money, clout and family support to make these demands. Think about the starving artist who has to choose between not being able to pay rent or working with a known predator. Good for Kelly for pulling back the curtain on these sketchy dealings. Let?s hope it helps those who feel they can’t say no.
Kelly recognizes Dr. Luke’s talent, even though she reviles him as a human. I think he crosses the ?separate the artist from their art? line for me. I can?t condone this reprobate and will make a conscious effort to avoid music from which he profits. I will, however, consider my judgement for those that work with him because it doesn?t sound like they have a choice.

There are a few Jennifer Lawrence stories rattling around the interwebs this week, so let?s get to it. Jennifer is still promoting ?mother!? which comes out on Friday. Considering how well horror movies are doing at the box office this year, I think the film will probably make a lot of money, because even if people don?t know what?s happening, they?ll enjoy it as a mindf–k. Of course, I?m sure there are some people – DEPLORABLES – who honestly believe that Jennifer said that Trump controls hurricanes and those people will refuse to see the film. To that, Jennifer wrote a little Facebook post:
My remarks were taken grossly out of context. Obviously I never claimed that President Trump was responsible for these tragic hurricanes. That is a silly and preposterous headline that is unfortunate, because it detracts from the millions of lives that are being impacted by these devastating storms and the recent earthquake. That?s pretty much the right way to handle it. I would have also said ?the people trying to make this into a thing are utter morons,? but whatever. As for ?mother!? – people have been talking about whether the Academy would embrace this film as a potential Oscar-bait movie, and whether Jennifer could end up with another Oscar nomination. Vulture did a piece about that, and suggests that the material could be too dark for Academy voters, but here?s what I say: one, Jennifer is a perennial Oscar favorite and the Academy adores her and two, Natalie Portman ended up winning an Oscar for Black Swan, so of course Jennifer has a chance. A good chance.
Meanwhile, Aronofsky and Lawrence chatted with Variety about feminism and such:
Jennifer believes this is a feminist story: ?To me, this is incredibly feminist in the way that these Victorian, patriarchal novels show these loving, amazing husbands that are very slowly and delicately taking away their wives? dignity,? said Lawrence, who was reading ?Jane Eyre? during the shoot. ?To be a feminist movie, we don?t have to all be women and all be aggressive. Before we knew what feminism was, people were writing these novels that showed women?s strength being drained from them.?
She went through hell working on this movie: ?I had trouble calming down and coming back after he called cut. I?ve always been fine snapping out of it, but I?ve never had to go this dark before. I kind of lost control of myself. I tore my diaphragm and popped my chest rib out. I don?t know if I?d ever work with Darren again.?
Aronofsky on the interpretations of the film: ?I think what?s exciting about the movie is that it?s open for interpretation. I wrote it in the eighth year of Obama. It?s coming out in the first year of Trump. My intention was very different from where we are now.?

The idea that this is a feminist film? well, I don?t know. Like, I understand the comparison to Jane Eyre, because it?s a book with a female protagonist, written by a woman, in those oppressive Victorian times. But does it make a difference when the female protagonist is written by a man, the story is directed by a man, and the film seems to be about men doing a huge gaslighting campaign on a woman? Hm.

When Fergie and Josh Duhamel first got together about about a dozen years ago, I thought ?this won?t even last a year.? At the time, she seemed like the messy one, and he seemed like he was more of a straight-arrow type. Years later, and I now think they?re both pretty messy and I?m astonished that they were able to hold it together for eight years of marriage. Fergie and Josh announced their split on Thursday, and please don?t take this as a signal that love is dead. If anything, this shows you that love (and looking the other way at your partner?s sketchy extracurriculars) can actually win out for eight years, against all the odds.
After eight years of marriage, Fergie and Josh Duhamel are going their separate ways, they confirm to PEOPLE exclusively.
?With absolute love and respect we decided to separate as a couple earlier this year,? the couple said in a joint statement. ?To give our family the best opportunity to adjust, we wanted to keep this a private matter before sharing it with the public. We are and will always be united in our support of each other and our family.?
The couple ? who share a 4-year-old son, Axl ? have been honest about the joys and challenges of parenting together.
?I have no idea what I?m doing half the time,? Duhamel previously told Ellen DeGeneres. ?She?s definitely more evolved than I am, and more patient,? he said. ?But I feel like I?m much more ? you know, having a kid when I was 40 years old is much different than having one at 22, so I?m a little bit more mature than I was then.?
While Fergie, 42, and Duhamel, 44, haven?t been spotted in public recently, they looked like a happy family while celebrating their eighth wedding anniversary in January.

When I was looking for photos of them as a family, I found some from June of this year, with Fergie and Josh taking Axl to church in LA. So? whatever happened between them, they really aren?t at each other?s throats. And whatever happened, they?re keeping it out of the press right now, which is good. Seriously, I still can?t believe they got together and managed to stay together for this length of time. It?s remarkable.

Here are some photos of Angelina Jolie and the kids at last night?s big New York premiere of First They Killed My Father. Do you recognize the designer ID without me saying it? It?s Dior! Ugh. Dior shuffled off a greyish tulle gown to Angelina instead of Jennifer Lawrence. J-Law must have been like ?another full-skirted princess dress? No thanks.? So they gave it to Angelina and I?m still not feeling it. The stripe on the skirt is sort of interesting, although I initially mistook it for a ?tier? or a ruffle and I was like ?nope.? This dress isn?t actually the worst thing, I just wish Angelina had chosen something else.
Angelina brought her kids to New York, of course, but they didn?t completely walk the red carpet with their mom. It seemed to be like this: Angelina posed solo for a little bit, then she posed with the president of Netflix, then she posed with Maddox and Pax, and then all the kids posed with Angelina and the cast. All the kids wore yellow flowers too – E! News says the yellow flowers are plumerias, ?which symbolize positivity and are used to celebrate special occasions.?
Angelina also told People Magazine in Toronto that her kids made her change clothes before she did press during the film festival: ?The reason I was a little late [to the interview] is they made me change. They thought what I was wearing was too revealing.? I kind of wonder if the same thing happened at this premiere? Like, Angelina was going to wear a black leather ensemble and her kids vetoed it and wanted her to wear the romantic princess dress?
