I have to admit, I?m a real sucker for an underdog. I find it very intriguing anytime someone overcomes adversity. But when I think of famous celebrities that have had it rough, I never think of Barbara Streisand. It turns out Babs had a really hard luck childhood. Not just because her family was incredibly poor ? she grew up in a Brooklyn housing project in an apartment that didn?t even have a living room ? but because she was actively discouraged from pursuing show business.
“We never had a couch. We never had a living room,” the singer/actress, who grew up living in a Brooklyn housing project, says in an interview set to air on CBS’s Early Show Tuesday. “We only had a dining room and then my grandmother and grandfather lived in one bedroom. My mother, my brother and I slept in another bedroom ? Now, I love couches,” says the star.
Another thing she lived without: “You know, I never had a doll ? I had a hot water bottle,” says Streisand.
As for how she made it from Brooklyn to Hollywood success, she says it was a hard road where she didn’t have much encouragement from her family. When she told her mother she wanted to be an actress, Streisand, 66, says her mother told her, “‘You’ll never make it. You’re not pretty enough. You’re not this enough.”
Still, the singer says, “I owe her a lot because, in a sense, I was proving to my mother that this skinny, little girl, you know, unconventional looking, I suppose, could be a movie star.”

Talk about coming a long way. According to Forbes, Streisand earned about $60 million between June 2006 and June 2007 alone. That?s a lot of dolls and couches. Though nothing is better from a parent than encouragement, her story shows that even if you don?t get that, you can still achieve amazing things by working hard and knowing you?ve got the skills to make it. It?s a little cheesy but Barbara?s story shows it?s true. She made a lot out of her talent and worked with her ?unconventional? looks, and has had an amazing career to show for it ? and it?s lasted much longer that most.

Balthazar Getty, the (married with four kids) small-time TV actor whose star rose to infamy when pictures of him and a topless Sienna Miller surfaced on the internet, may be fired from his show, “Brothers and Sisters.” After rumors of secret trysts at hotels, a divorce, some graffiti, no wait they’re not getting a divorce, a break up with Sienna, a gift gone wrong, getting back with Sienna (it’s complicated), it seems like it’s all gone to his head.
One possible explanation for his firing may be a rift between Getty and his co-star, Matthew Rhys. Rhys used to date Sienna and apparently introduced the new couple, but was furious when they began hooking up. Understandable, but with Sienna’s “dating” record, he had to know that it was inevitable. Another reason may be Getty’s behavior on set, which is far from acceptable:
“No one on set is a fan,” one source reports…
I?m told Getty has been late to set and he’s been in foul moods. “They often have to move shooting schedules around to accommodate [him],” a source says.
Getty was so “difficult”… that one costar was reduced to tears, according to the sources.

The article goes on to say that he has been forgetting his lines and just generally being a pain. Part of it may be the stress of leaving his children and wife in the dust. Poor, misunderstood adulterers. Seriously, the guy has four kids, and apparently not much money. If he wants to cheat, there are more subtle ways to go about it that wouldn’t harm his family so directly through the embarrassment. But as it is, could he have been any more blatant about his affair and could he have picked a partner with a more troubled dating past? Probably not.
He probably thought that hooking up with someone as high-profile as Sienna would give him a name and then get him better jobs. But instead, he’s being fired from the one he has now.
Fun fact: According to IMDB, Balthazar played Ralph in “The Lord of the Flies.” It’s always the child actors that end up being the biggest messes, isn’t it?

Brad Pitt has never come across as the brightest bulb in the pack. His reputation as a former (or current?) stoner and burnout proceeds him after such a weed-tastic role in True Romance and those old quotes that always pop up about how Brad thinks pot should be legalized. Granted, I don?t think there?s anything really wrong with being a burnout - but those long-term effects of years of pot-smoking can be devastating. And there?s nothing like trying to learn a new skill to make you re-think old burnout habits. Apparently, Brad?s been trying to learn French, with little success.
Brad Pitt admits his mind isn’t as agile as it once was. The actor, who is currently based in Berlin, is planning to move to France with partner Angelina Jolie and their six kids next year. But he can’t get to grips with the language.
?Ange and I are trying to learn French,? he says. ?But she?s better at it than I am. Some of my brain cells seem to have shut down, so I?m struggling. I can say ?merci beaucoup? and that?s about it.?
Adopted son Maddox puts his dad to shame.

Does anyone find this surprising? The only minor surprise is that Angelina doesn?t already speak French. I thought she was already fluent, but apparently not. Over the past few years Maddox has attended those French-speaking Lycee schools in New York and Los Angeles, schools that are usually for the children of diplomats and internationals. Personally, I think it?s wonderful to expose children to bi-lingual education at such an early age - but it helps if their parents can keep up.

One of my biggest peeves about tabloid journalism is the habit of seemingly-professional medical doctors to go ?on the record? with a tabloid about a celebrity that the doctor is not treating, nor will ever treat. These doctors don?t know the real medical issues of a certain celebrity, and yet they will pontificate as if lecturing a class of residents. So it is with OK! Magazine?s cover story this week, ?Doctors Warn Angie, No More Babies!?
There are several factual inaccuracies in the reporting - first, the assumption that the ?next? Jolie-Pitt will be adopted from Ethiopia. Next, the lie that Angelina?s c-sections were ?emergency?. Third, that Angelina had gestational diabetes while pregnant with Knox and Vivienne. All in all, it seems like a wholly manufactured controversy.
They are reportedly heading to Ethiopa to add another orphan to their well-loved brood, but as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt await this seventh child, they’re struggling with the news that they may never have another biological baby, sources say.
OK! has learned that because Angie’s last two pregnancies were so fraught with complications, she has been advised to wait a long time before getting pregnant again ? or not to get pregnant at all.
“Her previous pregnancies ended with emergency caesarian sections,” an insider tells OK!. “She’s been told that, at the least, she should not get pregnant for a year after her last deliver, and it would be safer if she did not get pregnant, ever.”
The health complications this time around could pose a direct danger to the Changeling star, Dr. Larrian Gillespie, who has not treated Angie, tells OK!.
“Angelina is at risk of having a stroke or heart attack, and because she developed gestational diabetes, there is a high risk she’ll have it again, with the child being at risk for diabetes.”
Not being a biological mom again might be hard for Angelina, as she revealed to Vanity Fair last year that she loves being pregnant.
“It makes me feel like a woman,” she said. “Also, I happen to be with someone who finds pregnancy very sexy.”

How ?emergency? can Angelina?s c-sections be if she flew in her Los Angeles doctor to Namibia, like, a week in advance of Shiloh?s birth? She?s stated in the past that Shiloh was breech, and the doctor advised a c-section. It?s not a ZOMG emergency, it?s just something that happens. As far as her pregnancy this year, she?s never made any statements about gestational diabetes, and I find this arm-chair diagnosis unsettling in any medical professional. So Dr. Larrian Gillespie is on notice! They only solid medical advice I could see any doctor issuing to Angelina is the fact that a woman?s body needs time to heal after a c-section (or after vaginal birth, for that matter), so she shouldn?t get knocked up right away. But it doesn?t seem like Angelina?s going to get pregnant right now anyway, considering she starts filming on Salt in about a month. Just more drama from OK!

Which is why you should take this story with a grain of salt. Plus, as I’m led to believe, Angelina Jolie is perfect in every way. She could birth gold bullion if she really wanted. They say that touching her is like taking Viagra for the soul. I don’t know what that means by the way, but it sounded nice.

I did a little quick and likely highly inaccurate mental math, and Eva Mendes has spent approximately 78% of the last year completely naked. From baring her butt for PETA, to going topless in Italian Vogue, and making an ad for Calvin Klein that was so raunchy it was banned in the US ? the woman has spent very, very little time covering her private parts.
Mendes obviously doesn?t have a problem with nudity, and she recently told AOL?s Moviefone that she thinks a bare, natural breast is much more beautiful and artsy than giant fake boobs that are covered by a bikini.
You made headlines this year for some very revealing shoots. First there was the Italian Vogue photos, then a banned Calvin Klein ad. Are you collecting proof that America is too sexually conservative?
You know what? I?m American, and I?m as proud as you get. But I think it?s easier for us to portray violence, and then to be OK with it, than it is for some reason to portray nudity. And look: I don?t like gratuitous nudity, and I believe that I?ve never been a part of gratuitous nudity, in a film or in a photo shoot. I feel like all my stuff has always been, if not artful, if not artsy, you know, tasteful. I think we?re a bit conservative when it comes to nudity and sexuality. And it?s so funny because I?d much rather see a beautiful nude of a woman than see these girls with these Triple-D fake boobs in a bikini. To me, that?s more vulgar than seeing a beautiful nude of a natural body.
So it?s a matter of taste?
Yeah. It?s like, who cares if you actually see the nipple in the nude? It?s a beautiful, natural nude. Versus, you know, women in these tiny, little, itsy bitsy bikinis with boobs that really don?t belong on their body. And I?m not against fake breasts at all; I?m not against augmentation. But I think when you get to that point of vulgarity where it?s not in proportion, that?s more vulgar to me than a beautiful nude.
Is it true that you said something along the lines of ?Actresses who don?t want to do nude scenes should be nuns??
That doesn?t sound like anything I would say. But I think that a lot of actresses look down and frown upon other actresses doing nudity. And I think in a film, baring your soul is baring your soul, and sometimes it entails nudity, and that doesn?t mean that you?re not as mysterious or you?re lesser than [others]. I think that can add to your performance, because it?s a scary thing putting yourself out there. And if I?m going to be emotionally naked, sometimes a script will call for me to be physically naked as well. I would never frown upon it. And I think in Hollywood some actresses do frown upon it. They say it like an honor: ?I would never do nudity!? And it?s like, oh come on! I?m an actress, you know, I?ll do what it takes to make my part as honest as it can be. So I probably said something like that.

Well, at least Eva practices what she preaches. Not surprisingly, she?s naked in her upcoming film ?The Spirit.? She?s also gone nude in three other movies.
In the Moviefone interview Eva praises Jennifer Lopez for paving the way for Latina actresses, and said that when she was first starting out ten years ago there were no decent roles. However in a previous interview she also said she?s more of a “serious actress” than J Lo.
I get where Eva is coming from in terms of the natural nudity. And she?s careful to point out that she?s not saying there?s anything wrong with regular breast augmentation, she just thinks it?s unattractive when women get those giant, bowling ball boobs. And I have to agree ? for the life of me, I will never understand what would make a woman want to look so fake and pasticy. Eva?s got an amazing body ? I can?t blame her for wanting to flaunt it. And if next year proves anywhere as successful as this one, we?ll see it at least nine times.

Woody Harrelson lives a peaceful life on the Island of Maui in Hawaii with his partner, Laura Louie, and their three daughters, Deni, 15, Zoe, 12, and Makani, two and a half. After nearly 20 years together Louie and Harrelson decided to make it official by marrying on Sunday in a small outdoor ceremony near their home attended by friends and family:
The couple, who have been together for 20 years, tied the knot in front of a small group of family and friends, including actor Owen Wilson, Willie Nelson and Sean Penn. Alanis Morissette sang at the ceremony.
Harrelson?s rep tells Us, ?Woody Harrelson and Laura Louie were officially married yesterday on the island of Maui. The ceremony was attended by family and friends. The couple have been together 20 years and are the proud parents of three daughters.?
The private wedding took place near Harrelson?s home in Kipahulu, Maui around 4.30 p.m. local time. An hour later a large cheer could be heard by nearby hikers.
Before the wedding, there was a Hawaiian chant and blessing by the Hawaiian minister. Louie, 43, wore a white wedding dress, while 47-year-old Harrelson wore cream-colored slacks and an aloha print short-sleeved shirt.
Harrelson fell in love with Louie in 1987 after meeting her on the set of Cheers.

It sounds like a beautiful and meaningful ceremony and one that wasn’t entered into lightly considering how long they’ve been together. I wonder what motivated them to get married after all this time. My husband and I were married at the end of the year too, and we were able to take advantage of tax benefits for the entire year that we otherwise wouldn’t have had if we waited a few weeks more. It sounds unromantic but it did save us thousands of dollars that we were definitely able to use as a newly married couple. Congratulations to Harrelson and Louie!

Eva Longoria had some issues revealing too much to the press early in her relationship with now-husband Tony Parker. In early 2006, she said “I?m the teacher [in our relationship], especially about love,” and claimed that Tony was “always telling me he?s never met anyone who loves the way I do - wholly and freely and unconditionally.” She later tried to take it back, reversing it to say that Tony was really the teacher or something, but the damage was done. Parker has since learned her lesson and has been keeping relatively quiet about what goes on behind closed doors in her marriage, although she does hint at problems in a recent interview.
In a talk with Glamour Magazine, Longoria says that she works at her marriage every day and takes it just one day at a time. If you’re happy in your marriage and things are going well, would you say you take it one day at a time? That’s something you use to deal with the prospect of long stretches of time in which you feel deprived of something. Many people would agree with her that marriage is work and say she’s just being realistic about it, but it sounds like more than that to me.
This is the second marriage for the 33 year-old and the first for her husband Tony, 26. Eva was previously married to actor Tyler Christopher from 2002 to 2004.
GLAMOUR: I read once, ?Love is the whole history of a woman?s life, but just an episode in a man?s.? Do you think that?s true?
ELP: I don?t know. I believe that men, when they fall, fall harder than women. Women gauge emotions a lot better because we?re more in touch with them, so we?ll give and take as much as we want.
GLAMOUR: How long have you been married?
ELP: A year and a half. But we dated for two and a half years first. We didn?t rush.
GLAMOUR: What was the courtship like?
ELP: Tony is very romantic, full of surprises?he?s the surprise king. But whether it?s a surprise party or a sweet note he leaves in my bag, for me it weighs the same.
GLAMOUR: What?s one thing about marriage that?s harder than you thought it?d be?
ELP: Marriage is a commitment, so you always have to work at it. For us, just juggling schedules is the biggest obstacle we have, and we don?t even really have a problem with that either…
I?m really a very fifties housewife… I love having dinner ready and making sure his clothes are ironed and that he?s packed and ready when he goes on road trips.

In just the last month, Longoria was photographed with her hand on Russell Crowe’s knee and was seen sitting on Marc Anthony’s lap. Maybe she wouldn’t have to work so hard on her marriage if she would stick closer to her own husband instead of other women’s. Ironically, Longoria also talked to Glamour about breaking the news to girlfriends that their men are cheating on them:
ELP: [talking about friends dating their friends' exes on "Desperate Housewives"] Oh, you never date someone?s ex-boyfriend. Period. That?s not even the unspoken rule?that?s the spoken rule.
GLAMOUR: Is there a statute of limitations on that?
ELP: I don?t know. Luckily, I?ve never been in a situation where I?ve wanted to date one of my friends? exes.
GLAMOUR: OK, what if you find out your girlfriend?s boyfriend is cheating on her?
ELP: I would tell her. If it were one of my best friends? I would probably take a picture with my camera phone first.
GLAMOUR: What if it?s her husband?
ELP: That?s a trickier one?. It?s tough, because sometimes people kill the messenger. But I think the truth always comes out, regardless of who tells.

I wonder if Eva did that interview before or after the photos were taken of her with her hand on Russell Crowe’s knee. This woman seems like she’s full of crap to me and I don’t see her marriage lasting that long, no matter how much she tries to play the domestic.

Prince Harry and his longterm girlfriend Chelsy Davy, 23, were photographed enjoying the sun and sand on Mauritius Island yesterday while on vacation for the holidays. Harry wore a pair of lose red swimming shorts while Chelsy was gorgeous in a navy blue string bikini.
There was a mild controversy yesterday over photos of Prince Harry drinking beer from a tube attached to a funnel, also called a beer bong, with some friends cheering him on. The 24 year-old engaged in the frat party practice with buddies who are vacationing on Mauritius with him. Those weren’t the first photos of the third in line to the throne engaged in a questionable drinking practice. Last year Harry was pictured snorting vodka.
Harry is thought to be enjoying a last binge before he starts pilot training in mid January. Once he begins intensive training to become a helicopter pilot for the Army Air Corps he will be barred from drinking for up to months at a time.

Popular porn star Janine Lindemulder has been sentenced to six months in federal prison on tax evasion charges. She pled guilty in August to not paying nearly $300,000 in taxes she owed the US government on her earnings. Lindemulder failed to make any federal tax payments for six consecutive years - from 2000 to 2006. She was sentenced on Monday to six months in federal prison and must report by March 10 to serve her term. She will also have to pay back all the money she owes to the government and once she’s released from prison she’ll have to spend up to six more months at a “federally operated residential community corrections center.”
Lindemulder specializes in on-screen scenes with women and has recently appeared in adult films with Jenna Jameson. You may known her as the naughty nurse with the glove on Blink 182?s album cover for “Enema of the State.” She is also an ex wife of Jesse James, actress Sandra Bullock’s current husband, and has a nearly five year-old daughter, Sunny, with James. James and Lindemulder broke up when she was seven months pregnant, with some reports claiming that James left Lindemulder for Bullock.
Last year James filed court papers seeking 50% custody of Sunny and alleging that Lindemulder was abusing the girl based on circumstantial evidence. Sunny was said to have cried out in her sleep “don’t touch me” and to have had minor scratches and bruises that she blamed on “mommy’s chair.” The rumor at the time that James sought increased custody was that Bullock was behind it because she wanted to spend more time with Sunny.
Now that Sunny’s mom has to spend six months in prison and up to six more months in another facility someone has to care of the girl and it may be James and Bullock.
Bullock is a step mother to James’ two other children from his first marriage, Jesse James, Jr., 8, and Chandler James, 10. They live nearby with their mother, Karla. Bullock has previously said of James’ children that she sees them as no different from biological children:
“I have children, amazing children. My love and my hopes for their future and their happiness, for their homework to be done and for them to know how smart and beautiful they are is no less than if they were my own biological children.”

Maybe she’ll have Sunny around now too. It’s sad for Sunny that her mom is going to have to go away for up to a year, but at least she has more family who will be there for her. If only Lindemulder had the sense to have paid her taxes she wouldn’t be in this mess in the first place.
