Mariah Carey covered some special Christmas issue of People Magazine, and I believe that?s how People Mag got the ?tip? that Mariah and Bryan Tanaka had split. From the sound of it, they broke up months ago and the whole thing was barely a story because? honestly, people forgot they were together. They?ve been together since 2016 (they got together quickly in the wake of her split from James Packer) but they?ve never been joined at the hip, and it seemed more like a relationship of convenience and stable PR more than anything else. My point is that no one really gave a sh-t about Bryan apart from Mariah, but now we?re getting ?his side? of the breakup. Apparently, he wants children.
Mariah Carey and her longtime boyfriend, Bryan Tanaka, have called it quits because he wanted kids, a source tells Page Six exclusively. We are told that the age gap of 14 years played a role with Tanaka, 40, wanting different things than Carey, 54.
?He wants to have a family. That?s not where she is at,? says the source.
Carey shares 12-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe with her ex-husband Nick Cannon. Tanaka, on the other hand, does not have children of his own.
The ?Fantasy? singer and backup dancer were together for seven years.
Eyebrows were raised this week when the Queen of Christmas went on her annual trip to Aspen, Colo., solo. Tanaka was also missing from her ?Merry Christmas One and All!? tour that started in November at the Yaamava Resort & Casino in Highland, Calif.
?He wants to start having his own life,? another source told us of the split.
[From Page Six]
This is something of a trend this year too men initiating a split or divorce because they suddenly realize that they want to be a father. It was the same with Joe Manganiello and Sofia Vergara. Like? did Bryan just realize that after seven years with Mariah? I don?t know it is what it is, if he wants something different or he just realized that he wants to be a father, so be it. Y?all know that Mariah wants no part in having another round of Dem Babies. You know what? I kind of hope Bryan got a nice check to go away quietly and not make too much noise. I wonder.

I really do find myself subscribing to Mariah Carey?s holiday ideology more and more as I get older. Like, as soon as Halloween is over, I?m ready for the Christmas season. I?m fine with a two-month-long ?holiday season,? which includes Thanksgiving for Americans. I used to be like ?why are they pumping Christmas music into every store on November 1st?? But now it?s lovely to me. I love this time of year, minus my least-favorite holiday, Halloween. Anyway, Mariah gave an exclusive interview to People Magazine to promote her new ad campaign with The Children?s Place (a kids? clothing retailer), featuring her two 12-year-olds, Monroe and Moroccan. Dem Babies are on the verge of their teenage years! Some highlights:
Monroe & Moroccan turn 13 next April: Dont rush all of our lives. Theyre still 12. According to Carey, getting to watch Moroccan and Monroe grow into young adults is actually really beautiful. Theyre good, nice kids. Theyre kind-hearted people, and I really enjoy being around them and watching them grow up into the people that theyre ultimately going to become.
The kids are involved with sports: She doesnt want to be that overbearing person that talks about all the stuff that they do?[but] Theyre into activities like physical sports and stuff like that, which I was hoping they would be, because when they were little, I had them doing that. Then, when it was COVID, they really couldnt go anywhere and do anything. So now theyre both really enjoying activities and sports and all of that.
Her holiday plans: I keep that part as secret as possible until we get everything set. Its just one of those things I do every year, where I make everybody wait to play Christmas music until Im ready to take it in and feel like, Okay, now its time for the holidays.' Carey also says that she, Moroccan and Monroe do the holiday season a little bit differently than most people, but notes, We have a great time. We have our traditions, like rolling in the snow, jumping in the hot tubs ? stuff that most people dont do, but its just that were all kind of daredevils. We also sit and play games, like Heads Up! or Taboo. For the past four years, I?ve been trying to make my traditional Christmas meals, like my dad?s recipe for linguini and clam sauce. I like to make sure Monroe and Rocky come in and cook with me.
She hopes her kids love Christmas too: All of us spending time together is more than enough as a gift for what I want for Christmas, and what I want for my kids for Christmas is to just enjoy themselves, be happy, enjoy being with family, and feel loved.?
[From People]
She sounds almost subdued about Christmas! But you know she has something amazing planned. I hope that her kids are good and well-adjusted. I?ve talked a lot of sh-t about Mariah over the years, but I do think she?s a good mom who is trying to provide her kids with the lives and experiences she dreamt of for herself. It also sounds like Nick Cannon barely has anything to do with his firstborn children, mostly because he keeps having babies with other women. Anyway, can?t wait for November 1st, the official start of the holiday season!

Archetypes Episode 2 is out!! The Duchess of Sussex?s second podcast episode is ?The Duality of Diva? with Mariah Carey. I?m listening to it as I?m writing Meghan and I are close-ish in age, so our cultural references are similar and it?s cracking me up that she?s referencing Divas Live as a cultural touchstone. I mean, it was? I suppose. I remember when Elton John was also included in Divas Live, remember that? The first part of the pod is a conversation with comedian Amanda Seales, then Mariah comes in about six, seven minutes in. I need a podcast about what happened behind-the-scenes of getting Mariah on Archetypes. I feel like Mariah showed up comfortably late and there was probably a good deal of drama with the Zoom. Here?s the pod:
The discussion with Mariah has a fascinating layer because both Mariah and Meghan are biracial and both women?s racial ambiguity has been used against them by both white and Black communities. I could listen to them talk about the difference between mixed-presenting and Black-presenting for an hour, honestly. The racial aspect of the conversation is fascinating and amazing. Then they transition into the diva talk. Anyway, I love Mariah. She?s so funny. They also talk about Black hair and hair texture and how no one knew how to do Mariah?s hair.

I actually think everything worked out perfectly for Mariah Carey for her book promotion. Her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, is already out. People really enjoy it! Most of the people interviewing her got advanced copies and all of them say that it?s very readable and enjoyable, which is what we should expect from a celebrity memoir. And now Mariah gets to promote the book from the comfort of her home, with the lighting of her choosing, on blurry-ass Zoom. She must be so happy. That?s how this Guardian interview happened via Zoom, at 6 am EST, with Mariah complaining the entire time. Mariah chats about her racial identity, Tommy Mottola (her first husband) and why certain people didn?t even get name-checked in the book. She?s hysterical. Some highlights:
She loves lockdown: ?Honestly, I don?t miss anyone outside, so I don?t care about lockdown. But it?s difficult for the kids, because they?re used to three-times-a-year Disney World moments and stuff like that, and that?s just not the current state of affairs.?
On doing press for the book: ?No offence to doing interviews, but what would be the point? I can?t articulate it better than I already have [in the book]. From now on, I?m like, ?Please refer to page 29,? you know what I mean??
On Jennifer Lopez: Mariah famous said ?I don?t know her?, when asked almost two decades ago about Jennifer Lopez Speaking of Lopez, her name is notably not in Carey?s memoir. Instead, when recalling the hoo-hah that led to their fallout, when a sample Carey had planned to use on her single, Loverboy, appeared on Lopez?s I?m Real, Carey refers to her as a ?female entertainer (whom I don?t know).? So is her official position still that she has never heard of Lopez? There is a pause, then stifled laughter. ?Oh my gosh, can you hear that music in the background? It?s Sam Cooke! It?s fantastic!? she giggles. Not only has Carey not heard of Lopez, she cannot even hear questions about her, it seems.
On Tommy Mottola?s controlling ways: ?In my opinion there was a lot of other stuff going on there? Yes it was traumatic [to revisit], but was it harder than some of the other things I?ve gone through? Maybe yeah, actually. I don?t know if I?ll ever fully recover from the damage of that emotional abuse. But in my school of thought, you have to be a forgiving person.?
She doesn?t even mention James Packer in the book: A lot of attention has focused on her confirmation that she did, as long rumoured, have a fling with the former baseball star Derek Jeter (?I?m not being shady, but he had on pointy shoes,? she recalls a little shadily of their first meeting.) But there is no mention of other boyfriends, such as her former fianc, the Australian billionaire James Packer. ?If it was a relationship that mattered, it?s in the book. If not, it didn?t occur,? she says. But you were engaged to Packer, I say. ?We didn?t have a physical relationship, to be honest with you,? she says. And that is that.
Whether she considers herself high-maintenance: ?You know what? I don?t give a sh-t. I fking am high-maintenance because I deserve to be at this point. That may sound arrogant, but I hope you frame it within the context of coming from nothing. If I can?t be high-maintenance after working my ass off my entire life, oh, I?m sorry ? I didn?t realise we all had to be low-maintenance. Hell, no! I was always high-maintenance, it?s just I didn?t have anyone to do the maintenance when I was growing up!?
Whether she minds being called a diva: ?No! Who the f-ck cares? Honestly! ?Oh my God, they?re calling me a diva ? I think I?m going to cry!? You think in the grand scheme of things in my life that really matters to me, being called a diva? I am, bitches, that?s right!?
[From The Guardian]
RIP James Packer, OMG. I can?t believe how she destroyed him! Well? thinking back, I?m pretty sure that he was tired of her drama and he split. She must have been like ?good riddance.? But there?s a confirmation that they didn?t have a physical relationship. Not like her thing with Jeter. And yes, Mariah is a high-maintenance diva and so be it. She?s actually one of the last real divas. #SaveTheDivas. SHE STILL DOESN?T KNOW Jennifer Lopez TOO.

Mariah Carey has a great new long-read interview in Vulture. She?s promoting many things all at once: the 30th anniversary of her first album, the release of The Rarities (rare and unreleased songs from her career), and her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey is coming out. The interview takes place in the upstate New York estate she bought so her kids would have room to grow and play, and the interviewer had to come to Mariah?s house at nearly midnight, and they basically spoke throughout the night. Because she?s a vampire! Her home apparently smells of vanilla and gardenias and she has been in a ?Bubble? since March with the same five staffers. The piece is wonderful even if you only mildly like or appreciate Mariah and her whole deal. Personally, I think she?s A LOT, but I enjoyed this. Some highlights:
Whether Eminem should worry about the memoir: Eminem, who was reportedly ?stressed? over what Carey might say about their rumored 2001 fling, doesn?t have to worry. ?There?s some songs that I can sing in response to that, but I will not do it,? she?ll say when I ask. And then, with a roll of her head: ?If somebody or something didn?t pertain to the actual meaning of Mariah Carey, as is the title, then they aren?t in the book.?
Co-parenting with Nick Cannon: ?Co-parenting. ?Yeah, it ain?t easy, baby. It ain?t easy.? But you know what? It?s important. We keep it good for them,? she says of Cannon, whom she divorced in 2014. She won?t comment on his recent career drama (he was fired from his longtime gig hosting Wild ?N Out for making anti-Semitic remarks on his podcast, Cannon?s Class) but speaks fondly of him in her memoir in the chapter called ?Dem Babies.?
She remembers everything about falling for Derek Jeter: ?Of course I do! I can never forget that moment. I mean, it?s not like it was some intensely deep, intellectually stimulating ? again, it was a great moment, and it happened in a divine way because it helped me get past living there, in Sing Sing, under those rules and regulations.? When she belts, ?I?d risk my life to feeeeyall?/?Your body next to mine,? in ?My All,? it?s because she really was risking her life to have a night with Jeter in Puerto Rico, she says.
She moved out of the city for her kids: ?They?re not running around with matted locks,? she says when asked how her own childhood has shaped how she parents. ?They know that I?m here for them. They know that if they want to talk with their father, he?s a phone call away. They have stability. That?s what I didn?t have. They will never have a holiday that?s not happy unless something I can?t do anything about happens. They understand that they are Black. They have a whole lot of self-esteem and self-worth that I never had. And I probably still don?t now. I know that I still don?t.?
On being mixed race: ?I really have been like, ?I?m mixed. I?m mixed. I?m really, really mixed.? The truth is I will never say I had the same experience as a darker-skinned woman,? Carey starts in. She acknowledges the privilege in her being accepted by white audiences and a white-run music industry, but to her, it also means ?having a white mother, and being forced to live in white neighborhoods, and feeling ashamed that there is nobody visibly Black there ? and I?m being so real right now that I want to edit myself. Believe you me, I?m not thrilled to be this skin tone all the time. How was I supposed to fit in? I was, like, the only one that?s this weird mutant, mutt ? using an antiquated phrase that I?m not asking anyone else to ever use again, but I?m embracing it ? mulatto girl. I?m not even embracing it. It?s a horrible way of defining somebody. It actually means ?mule.???
An Ellen DeGeneres story: The interview was from 2008, when there were rumors Carey was pregnant. DeGeneres, apparently determined to get Carey to confirm the speculation, challenged her to drink Champagne. Carey was forced to announce her pregnancy. She miscarried soon after. ?I was extremely uncomfortable with that moment is all I can say. And I really have had a hard time grappling with the aftermath,? she says. ?I wasn?t ready to tell anyone because I had had a miscarriage. I don?t want to throw anyone that?s already being thrown under any proverbial bus, but I didn?t enjoy that moment.? Carey goes on to say that there is ?an empathy that can be applied to those moments that I would have liked to have been implemented. But what am I supposed to do? It?s like, [sings] ?What are you going to do????
[From Vulture]
I friggin? love her horny-for-Jeter story and how she apparently remembered every single thing about the night they met. I love that she?s too classy and too over it to even talk sh-t about Eminem. I really love what she says about race too that?s when she?s at her most real, her most vulnerable, and her most authentic, when she?s trying to talk about what it was like for her growing up as a mixed race child and then being a light-skinned, ethnically ambiguous artist in the music industry. There?s still a lot of damage for Mariah around her racial identity. Also: God, I hate Ellen.

I?m covering all the controversies today! And I?m crossing the holiday line to do so. I?ve got Chrissy Tiegen?s Turkey defamation on one side and on the other, I have the Brits coming for Mariah Carey. Specifically, Mariah?s Christmas Anthem: All I Want for Christmas is You. According to Variety, a mobile phone company called I Hate Joy Huawei, conducted a survey among British folk of the Most Annoying Christmas Song and they listed AIWfCiY as number 1. I?m telling you, I. Can. Not.
The full survey results for Britain?s most annoying Christmas song:
1. All I Want for Christmas is You ? Mariah Carey
2. Do They Know It?s Christmas? ? Band Aid
3. I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday ? Wizzard
4. Merry Xmas Everybody ? Slade
5. Last Christmas ? Wham!
6. Fairytale of New York ? The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl
7. Baby It?s Cold Outside ? Tom Jones & Cerys Matthews
8. Santa Claus is Coming to Town ? Jackson 5
9. Santa Baby ? Eartha Kitt
10. Jingle Bells ? Andrews Sisters
[From Variety]
The divine Mistress Carey does not need me to defend her or her song. She?s already turned this article into two-ply and replied to Old Blimey with ?I don?t know where that is.? I I could take up much of this page with an essay on the delight that song brings me every single time it comes on, but I have a lot of work to do with the rest of this list instead. Band Aid? I feel attacked. When you dismiss the song, you dismiss the video and all that hair (so much hair). And you dismiss Sting?s precious little smile when he sings the word ?sting,? or Bono?s body contortions trying to punch out a note, or Phil Collins drumming for his very life. Fine, ruin Band Aid for me but, and I will try to say this as politely as possible, my dear friends across the pond: take Eartha Kitt?s name out of your mouth until you show her the respect she?s due. What?s making all this worse is The Guardian did their own survey and confirmed everything Variety reported. Except ? and this is a huge except ? The Guardian listed Bing Crosby/David Bowie?s duet at number one. I realize that?s where Bowie would also put it, but I can?t, I love it so. And now that they are both dead, I cry the good tears when I hear it. You hear me Britain ? I cry. Honestly, this tweet says everything for me on the matter:
We?ll throw your goddamn tea out again if you keep running your mouth https://t.co/NUt3GCY7sV

Mariah Carey received the Billboard Icon Award last night and the whole thing became an instant classic. First of all, Mariah was, like, professionally cinched into some kind of Spanx harness and corset and then the dress was probably sewn onto her. All so we can say ?wow, you look SO THIN Mariah!? Her styling was very pretty too great hair, pretty makeup, and she just looked happy. Here?s the video of Mariah?s speech it became instantly iconic because of Mariah throwing her tissue around the 50-second mark.
She performed a medley too:
I cut to the BMAs as Ciara was performing and without the close-ups, I could tell who was singing. I feel bad about that, because she sounded good and she looked beautiful. But I was like ?who is this, J.Lo?? So wrong.
Priyanka Chopra attended with her husband Nick Jonas. She wore a J-Lo-esque Zuhair Murad gown which was pretty boring.
Country Diplo when will I ever feel enough shame about my desire to hatefk him?? Because even now, I?m like ?I still sort of would.? I?m so sorry.
Drake won a million BMAs and during one of his speeches, he thanked Arya Stark ?for putting in that work last week.? Drake tends to curse the women he supports though, so now it?s pretty much guaranteed that Arya won?t survive. *sob*

Please, for the love of all things holy, do not let my children read this post. Marah Carey graced Jimmy Kimmel Live with her presence the other night. While there, she told Jimmy what her (just turned) seven-year-old twins, Morroccan and Monroe, were up to. No good, according to Mariah. She said that her ?technological genius? Moroccan ordered a dog and a few ($5,000 worth!) trinkets all by himself (clip below).
Mariah Carey has to be careful not to let her 7-year-old son, Moroccan, near an iPad!
?My son is like a technological genius,? the ?Hero? singer insisted on Wednesday?s Jimmy Kimmel Live! ?I have to control them with iPads because literally he charged $5,000 on Amazon. Yeah, he did!?
Things got even more out of control when Roc spent some time with his dad, Nick Cannon.
?The other night apparently he was with Nick and he ordered a dog,? Carey revealed. ?They called him and they were like, ?Your dog is ready.? And he was like, ?I didn?t order any damn dog!??
[From ET]
I totally, 100% believe all of this. It is so easy for a kid to buy things online. The words ?In Game Purchases? haunts me in my dreams. Im pretty alert when it comes to my where my credit card is stored and what my kids have access to. And the reason I am so savvy? Because my friends had kids before me and I heard all the horror stories. But the dog really makes me laugh. I once caught my daughter about to email a query to a husky rescue group. Her response when grilled was, ?it (the website) asked if I was interested in adopting her and I am!?
Mariah also said the kids are little singers, which makes sense given their parentage. The twins, who are adorably nicknamed Roc and Roe, have recorded a song. Mariah hasn?t released it yet because she hasn?t discussed it with their dad yet. While talking about the kids, she brought up Nick with much respect. I love that Mariah and Nick are such great co-parents. I think they genuinely like and respect each other and it shows ? not only to us, but more importantly, to their kids. I do, however, hope Nick signs off on that single getting released. I?d love to hear it.
My child did what now?
