You know what I wonder? If Will Smith had simply apologized and not preemptively resigned from the Academy, I wonder if his punishment would have been a lot lighter. It just felt like the Academy felt like they had to issue some big punishment, and Will probably should have left the Academy membership on the table, you know? The Academy higher-ups moved up their meeting to determine Will?s punishment, and the meeting took place Friday morning in LA, although the mess was conducted over video-conference. Every step the Academy took ahead of the meeting telegraphed the fact that they would grossly overreact to Will Smith slapping Chris Rock. And that?s exactly what they did. They decided that Will is banned from the Oscars and all Academy events for the next ten years. These aholes are telling on themselves.
Twelve days after Will Smith slapped and screamed profanities at Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has ruled that Smith ? who was presented with the best actor Oscar later that same evening ? has been banned from returning to the Oscars or attending any other Academy events for the next 10 years. Smith will retain the Oscar that he won and remains eligible for future Oscar nominations and wins.
The Academy?s 54-person board of governors held a special meeting on Friday morning to determine what action to take against Smith. Until one week ago, when Smith announced that he was resigning as a member of the organization, he was expected to face suspension or expulsion, having violated the standards of conduct that the Academy implemented after the outbreak of the #MeToo movement.
Many members of the industry have expressed outrage over Smith?s behavior, which he himself called ?shocking, painful and inexcusable.? Some even called for him to lose the Oscar statuette that he was awarded and/or his eligibility for future Oscars. But the Academy appears to have doubled down on its long-held position that there is a line between onscreen work and offscreen conduct. (Harvey Weinstein and Roman Polanski have been expelled from the organization, but each still has the Oscar statuette awarded to them prior to that.)
In a letter to members sent after Friday morning?s meeting, Hudson and Rubin acknowledged that they ?did not adequately address the situation in the room? and apologized that they ?fell short ? unprepared for the unprecedented.? They also expressed ?deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances? and thanked the evening?s ?hosts, nominees, presenters and winners for their poise and grace during our telecast.?
Shortly afterward, Smith, through a spokesperson, issued a brief statement of his own: ?I accept and respect the Academy?s decision.?

You can read the open letter to Academy members at THR. As I said, a total overreaction. Even just the trade-paper comparison between Will?s actions to Roman Polanski and Harvey Weinstein. Polanski raped a child. Weinstein raped and sexually abused dozens, if not hundreds, of women. Will Smith slapped a man. A man who had been talking sh-t about Will?s wife for decades. And what kills me is that the Slap made the Oscars into a huge event and one of the biggest cultural moments of the year, and the incident will be referenced in every awards show (including the Oscars) from now on. They?ll find ways to profit from it, monetize it and laugh about it, all while keeping Will marginalized and banned. The Academy looks so out of touch here. At least they didn?t ?take? his Oscar, I guess. You know they wanted to.

As a Fresh Prince of Bel Air fan, I was ecstatic when filmmaker Morgan Cooper posted a viral trailer of a darker, grittier reimagined Fresh Prince of Bel Air in 2019. I got even more excited when it was announced that Will Smith loved the trailer so much that he wanted to produce the project. Then Peacock picked up the series for two seasons. I got a bit nervous when it was revealed that the original showrunner and his replacement quit the show before it even got off the ground. I worried that the network was taking the show in a different direction. But my excitement has been renewed after a video of Will Smith announcing to newcomer actor, Jabari Banks of Philadelphia, that he landed the lead in the series reboot. Below are a few more details including the surprise announcement video via BBC:
It is an absolute pleasure to meet you, to be on with you, and from the deepest parts of my heart I want to say congratulations to you, he told Banks.
You have the role of Will on Bel-Air.
Im ready, Im so ready, replied the actor, who revealed his father had suggested he try out for the part after reading an article about it.
This is a dream come true, he added.
Banks said the show had a huge impact on his life, adding that he once got his friends to join him in dressing up as characters from the TV show while he was at high school.
The original Will told the new one: Youve got a fantastic road ahead of you, and Im looking forward to being an asset for you in this process as you build out your life and build out your career.
According to US entertainment outlet Deadline, this will be Banks first TV role.
A resident of west Philadelphia, which is also where the titular character was famously born and raised, Banks graduated from the citys University of the Arts last year.
He also an accomplished singer-songwriter, rapper, and basketball player.

Jabari is adorable but I feel like he looks way too young for the role. With that being said, he does look like a cross between Will Smith and the young man in Coopers reboot so he definitely looks the part. I think the role of Will is something Jabari can grow into and I am excited for him. I am also happy that Will and the producers decided to go with an unknown actor. This is definitely an amazing opportunity for someone like Jabari at the start of their career. It was adorable that Jabari was so excited to meet Will that he showed Will a picture of him and his high school friends dressed as the original cast for the original series. I also think it is a full circle moment that Jabari will literally live his role by being from Philly and moving to L.A. Anyways, I am now excited about the series again. I thought the casting of Will was going to be the hardest role. Now that they are off to a good start, I look forward to seeing who will play the rest of the cast.

Why does there always seem to be drama on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air sets? Remember in the original series Janet Hubert was recast as Aunt Viv after season three because she and Will Smith were not getting along? It looks like the Fresh Prince reboot is suffering from the same drama. Bel Air, the Fresh Prince reboot that was picked up for two seasons by Peacock, and is based off of Morgan Coopers three minute viral video set in current day, has had a few setbacks. In December, showrunner Chris Collins left the show and his replacement Diane Houston (Empire) came on board. Now Diane has now also exited the show. As it stands, writers T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson will be the showrunners and I am not feeling good about it. Here are a few more details fromPeople:
Chris Collins will no longer be serving as showrunner and executive producer on the reboot, titled Bel-Air, as the show will be going in a slightly different creative direction, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which was first to report the news.
Per THR, Collins left Bel-Air in December and was replaced by Empires Diane Houston, who has also since left the show. Following her departure, writers T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson stepped in to take over as showrunners.
The upcoming series is inspired by cinematographer Morgan Coopers 2019 fan trailer titled Bel-Air ? which is a dramatic reimagining of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Coopers drama is set in modern day and highlights serious issues, such as police brutality, gang crime and wealth inequality. It also explores what its like for a Black family to live in Bel-Air in todays social climate.

I was really irritated with this story and had a conversation with Celebitchy about it. We think theyre trying to take the story in a different direction from the original vision. Everyone got hyped about this reboot because of Morgans reimagined version of the show. Morgans viral video hit home and resonated on so many levels. If the show is already experiencing this much turnover, it is going to be a hot mess. Bel Air was literally the only reboot that I was looking forward to. Reading about the turnover has me nervous and skeptical that the show will be any good. I hope the writers who are now showrunners will stick to the plan and continue with Morgan Coopers original vision. Otherwise the show will be dead in the water.

The legend goes that Richard Williams was watching TV one day and he ended up watching a women?s tennis match. He watched until the end, for the trophy presentation and the handing out of the prize-money checks. When he heard the amount of money women?s tennis players were making, he decided right then and there that his daughters were going to learn how to play tennis. He never had any real formal training as a tennis player or coach. He studied the game and studied how to game the game. He came up with a 78-page plan to make his daughters into tennis champions. He took little Venus and little Serena to the cracked, public courts of Compton for hours, teaching them technique, groundstrokes, serves, backhands, movement, everything.
There are other parts to the story, because of course there are. By Venus and Serena?s teenage years, their mom Oracene Price had as much to say about their lives and careers as Richard. Oracene even worked more with Serena when Richard was focused on Venus. Richard was their coach of record for much of their teen years and for much of their 20s Serena only hired Patrick Mouratoglou as her full-time coach in 2012, when she was 30. Richard was also politically savvy, understanding that the white tennis establishment would not welcome Venus and Serena with open arms. He prepared them for that as well, and prepared them to stand up for themselves and to win, win, win. Richard Williams is still alive he was just on a practice court with Venus this month but he is in poor health, having suffered a series of strokes.
I?m still a little bit mad that Mahershala Ali wasn?t cast as Richard, because I think Ali looks so much like a young Richard Williams, and I think Ali would have been fantastic in the role in general. But they went with Will Smith, and if the trailer is any indication, Will did his homework.
I understand why they?re probably not going to address the Nick Bollettieri situation directly, but I hope they capture the essence of what went down. For several years, Serena and Venus were at Bollettieri?s academy in Florida, and Bollettieri seemed to believe he was Venus and Serena?s coach for a time. Richard, ever the hype man, managed to get Venus signed to a major sponsorship and the family had enough money to buy a house and build their own courts, and suddenly there was no more Nick Bollettieri, at least not in Venus and Serena?s professional lives. But that was a significant moment when the Williams family began doing their own thing adjacent to the white tennis establishment.
Anyway, they got a lot of stuff right. The beads! The girls? relationship with their dad. How people didn?t understand how these two little girls from Compton were so good at such a young age.

In July of 2018, Will Smith told us he was going to write a book. He said he was doing it for us because he has ?years and years of stuff I want to say.? On Saturday, Will not only announced the release date, but he also showed a copy of the cover (above) as well. According to the press release, the book is equal parts self-help and memoir. It will arrive November 9th of this year but is available for pre-order now. People gives us a little more insight as to what to expect.
Will Smith is sharing his story on his own terms.
On Saturday, the award-winning actor revealed the title and cover of his upcoming autobiography, WILL, on Instagram and his website. The inspirational memoir will be published by Penguin Press on Nov. 9.
Its been a labor of love, Smith said in a video posted on social media about the exciting news. Ive been working on it for the past two years and it is finally ready.
In WILL, Smith will explore his personal trajectory, from his childhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to his iconic roles in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and an array of hit films like Ali (2001) and Hitch (2005).
The book is an inspirational tale of how [Will Smith's] true self-knowledge helped to propel him to extraordinary success, and then evolve further to a place of deeper peace with himself, his loved ones, and the world, according to the press release announcing the book deal in October 2018.
Smith also revealed the cover for the forthcoming release, which was created by New Orleans-based visual artist Brandan BMike Odums. The cover features a series of portraits of the actor painted on top of each other.
The idea is to communicate visually the evolution of a person, from childhood through adulthood, and at major stages of their life in between, according to a press release.

The book was co-written by Mark Manson, something Will told us was going to happen at the beginning. Mark has written a couple best sellers, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, Everything is F*cked, Love is Not Enough and (and I am not making this up) Models: Attract Women Through Honesty. I admit I haven?t read Marks stuff, but the description of his books sounds a lot like how the Smiths try to sell their Red Table Talks, real talk and facing the truth kind of thing. I?m impressed the book took two years, that says at least Will thought about it and didn?t just push it through to get his $$$.
Will has led a fascinating life, I?d like to know about it. But it sounds like he?s going to turn his experiences into teachable moments. I feel like the Smith family tends to exclude important details in their teachable moments, especially the ones that end up making them look bad. Still, if this is the book Will wanted to write, then good for him. It?s always an accomplishment to finish a project like this. Kudos.
What I really want to talk about is the cover of this book. It?s an amazing piece of art. Will posted this time lapse video below of the artist creating it. The image is five layers, each representing a different stage of Will?s life. I?ve watched him create the canvas about a dozen times and I swear, the finished product gets more beautiful each time I watch. The artist is Brandon Bmike Odums frm New Orleans and his work is amazing.

In late March, Georgia governor Brian Kemp signed a huge voter suppression bill into law. The aim of the new law is to plainly suppress the Black vote in that state, and to make it harder for people in urban areas to vote. This came just five months after Georgia voters helped elect Joe Biden to the presidency, and just a few months after Georgians elected two Democrats for the senators in special run-off elections. The Republicans are beyond pissed.
What?s strange is that Georgia has spent years opening up the state to corporations and Hollywood studios with all kinds of tax incentives. Disney, Marvel, Netflix and Tyler Perry Studios always have productions filming in Georgia. A wide variety of films and TV shows base themselves in Georgia. The voter suppression law was widely condemned by Hollywood, and all of the major unions issued statements. And? that?s about it. Just a lot of words, no promises to move productions out of Georgia. The lack of action from H?wood was getting pretty noticeable. Well, finally, an actor and a director have actually done it they?re moving their sh-t out of Georgia.
Will Smith and the director Antoine Fuqua said on Monday that they were pulling their upcoming film production ?Emancipation? out of Georgia because of the state?s new voting law, which has been denounced by activists as an effort to make voting harder for the state?s Black population. The slavery-era drama, which is being produced and financed by Apple Studios, is the first major production to cite the law as a reason to leave the state, which offers generous tax incentives to Hollywood productions and has become a major hub for Marvel Studios, Netflix and other industry heavyweights.
?At this moment in time, the nation is coming to terms with its history and is attempting to eliminate vestiges of institutional racism to achieve true racial justice,? Mr. Smith and Mr. Fuqua said in a joint statement. ?We cannot in good conscience provide economic support to a government that enacts regressive voting laws that are designed to restrict voter access. The new Georgia voting laws are reminiscent of voting impediments that were passed at the end of Reconstruction to prevent many Americans from voting. Regrettably, we feel compelled to move our film production work from Georgia to another state.?
In the film, set to begin production this summer, Mr. Smith was set to play the real-life enslaved man named Peter, who emancipated himself from a Southern plantation and joined the Union Army. His story became famous after photographs of his back, scarred by whippings, appeared in the pages of Harper?s Weekly.
Whether or not this move will prompt other studios to reconsider productions in Georgia is not clear. Stacey Abrams, along with Tyler Perry, who owns his own studio in Atlanta, and others have urged Hollywood not to uproot productions despite outrage over the new law.

Personally, I think Antoine Fuqua and Will Smith are merely acting on their consciences rather than making a larger call for studios to move out of Georgia or boycott the state. Some say boycotts work, some say no, boycotts don?t do sh-t. I think a boycott on its own won?t do much, especially if there are only a handful of artists and productions walking out of the state. Plus, it is notable that Stacey Abrams has asked Hollywood not to leave, and I?m sure there are a lot of powerful white Hollywood figures who will use that as cover. I think Will and Antoine are brave for what they?re doing and hopefully they?ll force a larger conversation within Hollywood and there can be a better plan beyond ?issue a statement condemning the new voter suppression law and continue to pour money into Georgia.?

In March 2019, a reimagined trailer of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air produced by filmmaker Morgan Cooper went viral. The gritty and modern depiction of the story got fans of the 90 series hyped, then it caught the attention of Will Smith who later interviewed Cooper on his Youtube channel.
An hour-long remake based on the trailer is being produced by Wills Westbrook studios and is being shopped around. Netflix, HBOMax and Apple are very interested. The series will take the theme of the original sitcom and modernize it. The Insider gives more details of the series.
On Why Will Smith wanted to co-produce the series
I saw the trailer that Morgan Cooper hooked up and its called, Bel-Air, Smith said. This was the first time that I heard something and was like Yo, thats an idea that is brilliant.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bel-Air will provide a dramatic take on the TV show and will will dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions and biases of what it means to be a Black man in America today.
The reboot is reportedly being offered to streaming services including NBCs Peacock, Netflix, and HBO Max. HBO Max is the current streaming home for the original series.

When the trailer came out my friends and I had a virtual meltdown because it was so good. The darker take on the series feels relevant for todays climate and exactly what we need at the moment. Of course I hope theyll work in the shenanigans that the Fresh Prince and Jazz got up to for comical relief. I still know pretty much all of the lyrics to the song and sometimes watch reruns.
In the trailer Will is still corny and Jazz is cooler but I like how Carlton and Hilary come off quite spoilt and entitled. The uncle Phil in this version is not as lovable but realistically I dont think a rich uncle taking in his troublemaker nephew would be.
I grew up in the 80s and 90s which I feel were the best decades for black film and television. Those more down to earth sometimes dramatic voices and experiences are often missing from todays pain porn laden storytelling of the Black American experience. I do hope a major streaming service will pick up this brilliant concept so that it has a global audience and reach. In the meantime, those of us who fell in love with Will Smith and the rest of the Fresh Prince cast will definitely embrace this newer original version of the show.

In this weeks Celebitchy Zoom meeting we talked a lot about Will and Jada Pinkett Smiths very special Red Table Talk episode, where Jada admitted her entanglement with August Alsina. The consensus was that this was an ego-driven exercise and that Will and Jada did not address most of the things August said or how inappropriate the relationship was. Ashley pointed out that they didnt even acknowledge the fact that they both denied Augusts account at first. We will have a segment from our talk in the upcoming Gossip With Celebitchy podcast, #58, out Sunday morning! In the mean time Wills people went to People Magazines to give his side. They previously gave insider quotes to Us Magazine claiming no one would care about this if they werent famous. Thats too cute by half considering Jada has been desperately trying, for years, to capitalize on peoples mild interest in her.
A source close to the couple says their marital problems were exacerbated by their fame, and that the Bad Boys star, 51, felt more of the pressure to make their high-profile marriage work.
Theyre two different people trying to make it, and on top of it theres this huge spotlight on them, says the source. People are always going to grow and change, but most dont have the world watching their every move while they do that.
While the two have experienced their ups and downs, a friend of Pinkett Smith tells PEOPLE the Girls Trip star has never stopped loving Smith.
She would be the first person to admit marriage is hard work, but she will always love Will, says the friend. Even when they havent been together, Jada always spoke of her marriage as something special.

People also reported that Will and Jada went to the Bahamas with Willow right before the RTT episode came out. They stayed at an exclusive resort called the Albany. I was just looking through their website and they have villas and a whole recording studio there. (The Bahamas is open to US travelers with no quarantine requirements.)
As Zakia said in our meeting, Will surely had entanglements too and hes just mad that Jada was messy and hers got out. Wills side is saying he felt more pressure to make it work because Jadas side leaked, so hes playing the hurt one. Wills potential sidepieces include both a female costar and a man whom Will is rumored to have had a relationship with. (No shade on that if they had an open marriage.) Im not going to get into specifics, but you can figure it out. His hookups were adults, knew their role and didnt talk like August. (Incidentally August has tweeted some cryptic sh-t since the RTT episode came out, go here to read.)
All Will and Jada had to do, to quote Colleen, is to admit they have a nontraditional marriage. Theyve pretty much told us, for years, that their marriage is open. Instead they talked in circles on RTT and made it sound like they were split up. That may have been the case but they seem to have reached an understanding about it. Now were getting spin and sourced stories about how theyre surprised were paying attention to them. Jada revealed on separate RTT episodes that she was once addicted to vibrators and p0rn. Theyre only private about things they dont want to admit.

I kept waiting for all of the hot takes about how Aladdin was going to be racist trash, but it looks like? Disney sort of pulled it off? Maybe those takes were out there and I just didn?t see them. I did see several complimentary reviews of Aladdin, which were basically like ?of course this isn?t the best movie ever, but it?s perfectly enjoyable.? The Rotten Tomatoes score for Aladdin was only 57% on opening weekend, but as Disney has shown repeatedly, these kinds of kids? films are absolutely critic-proof. And as such, Aladdin made a significant haul on its three-day opening weekend:
While the box offices holiday weekend is not yet over, Aladdin is already posting big earnings in its three-day weekend run. The Disney live-action title has grossed $86.1 million in its release so far, already out-pacing earlier estimates that it would gross $80 million for the entire Memorial Day holiday. Aladdin is now on pace for a $100 million plus four-day bow.
Guy Ritchie directed Aladdin, which stars Will Smith as the Genie and Mena Massoud as the titular hero, a charming street rat who masquerades as a prince to win the affections of Princess Jasmine, played by Naomi Scott. The movie musical, produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirichs Rideback, opened wide in 4,400 locations. The re-hashing of the studios 1992 animation has received a mixed response from critics, with a 57 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but has fared far better with audiences, earning a A CinemaScore.

You know who really needed this win? Guy Ritchie. It would be interesting if Ritchie just fully gave up on his gangster films and just became the director of Disney spectacles and family-friendly action movies. Anyway, I guess I?m happy for everyone involved. I still think it?s sort of dumb to do all of these live-action remakes of beloved Disney animated films, but every single one they?ve done thus far has been a huge financial success. The Lion King is next, right? And Beyonce is involved in that one. Soyeah? it will be a huge success too.

Despite the bad reviews for Will Smith?s new Netflix movie, Bright, I gave it a chance. I like to think I have a high tolerance for supernatural dramas (I watched every season of True Blood and the first three of Vampire Diaries) but I gave up on Bright after an hour. As so many critics have stated better than I can, it was a total mess. Smith was funny and his delivery saved some scenes which would have otherwise bombed, but he was not enough to get me to invest that additional hour. It was a cop procedural with otherwordly creatures (elves, fairies and orcs, but where were the vampires and zombies?) that just failed on every level. Given what we just learned about the screenwriter, I’m ok with that.
Anyway Will is still out there, hustling and being Will Smith. He posted some cute photos and a video to Instagram revealing that his wife, Jada, made him and their kids wear ugly Christmas sweaters and go on a sleigh ride this holiday. I?m jealous! I love all that cheesy Christmas stuff. As an aside, I?ve been watching Hallmark movies with my mom (most have a royal theme) and actually appreciating them. They’re predictable but sweet. The Netflix one, A Christmas Prince, was fun, I enjoyed it. (A Prince for Christmas wasn’t bad either, and the Tara Reid one, A Royal Christmas Ball, was cute. I’m not even blowing smoke.)
