If you?re a fan of Sarah Jessica Parker, her profile in the New Yorker is a must-read. If you?re like me and you find her exhausting, please praise me for getting through this damn thing. It?s so long!!! Jesus H., she?s not that interesting and there are only so many stories we can read about SJP being polite to tourists. SJP is obviously promoting the new season of And Just Like That, the ?spinoff? of Sex and the City. The New Yorker devoted 10,000 words to this and they never really answered the question of ?why revisit these characters in this way?? I mean, there is one answer: playing Carrie Bradshaw is SJP?s most successful project, and she wants to keep riding that, but she dresses it up as fan-service. Some highlights from this New Yorker piece.
The Bitter Ender: Parker calls herself a ?bitter ender.? Performance, in her approach, requires the discipline to stick with it. Even trying on designer clothes can be an act of endurance. She told me she?d welcome the chance to one day lean into her fascination with regimentation and play, against type, the role of a nun.
She avoids the discourse over AJLT: ?No one sends me press clippings. I don?t get reviews, watch reviews, read reviews.? She continues to play Carrie because, as she put it, she finds the material ?unmistakably rich,? but also out of what seems to be a peculiar sense of responsibility. When the reboot was about to dbut, in the midst of the pandemic, she described it as a kind of palliative: ?The world of Carrie and her friends has always been about coming home, and I felt like we needed that right now,? she told Vogue.
Her relationship with Robert Downey Jr in her 20s: ?People around him would be dismissive of me, but I had given him stability and tried to create a steady heartbeat that allowed him to show up on time. That made me angry and embarrassed me.?
Dating John Kennedy Jr: In the summer of 1991, Parker met John F. Kennedy, Jr., at the theatre. He asked her out, and they dated for a few months. Paparazzi trailed them everywhere. In a Times profile of Parker not long afterward, she sounded shell-shocked. ?I never had any idea what real fame was,? she said, adding, ?When I die, they are going to say, ?Oh, yeah, Sarah once dated John Kennedy.? ?
The dirty girl talk on SATC: ?That just was not how I conducted conversations,? she said. (She did, for a time, smoke cigarettes.) She?d never done nudity professionally, and she told Star that she didn?t intend to. Even now, she sounds somewhat confounded by Carrie?s life style. ?I could never do any of that stuff in my life. It would be immoral. It would be unprincipled. An affair, husbands, kissing, buying, drinking?whims, whims, whims!?
The Kim Cattrall catfight: When ?And Just Like That? premired, some fans were outraged that Samantha had been written out. Cattrall claimed in an interview that she?d learned about the new show on social media, ?like everyone else.? Parker told me, ?We felt like it had been made clear by her that this was not a character she wanted to revisit.? In Season 1, Samantha is estranged from the other friends. Her text messages from London are infrequent and terse. But in May Variety leaked the news that Cattrall would be returning in the Season 2 finale, for a phone-conversation scene that she?d filmed ?without seeing or speaking with? her co-stars. The tabloids scoured the story for evidence of acrimony. As in the past, Parker has practiced a tight-lipped diplomacy. ?It?s the weirdest thing, to be told we?re in a catfight,? she said to me. ?I would never speak poorly about Kim. I just wouldn?t.? Parker said that King had ?begged? her not to discuss the Cattrall cameo, but she did admit, ?I am in the scene.?

?I am in the scene? meaning that Cattrall filmed her cameo separately, completely away from SJP and everyone else, and they will have Samantha talking on the phone to Carrie. There?s no way in hell Cattrall would have agreed to do a scene in the same room with Sarah Jessica at this point. As for ?I would never speak poorly about Kim. I just wouldn?t.? Please. She literally HAS sh-ttalked Cattrall constantly for years, she just hides behind sources or other people (like Andy Cohen) to do her dirty work. I was also surprised that she spoke sharply about her relationship with Robert Downey Jr usually she avoids discussing him entirely, but that was her biggest relationship before Matthew Broderick.

Sarah Jessica Parker is in promotional mode, hyping the new season of And Just Like That. These are photos of SJP lighting up the Empire State Building, a fun gig that some actors get to do as part of some promotional tours. Notice SJP?s hands, or more specifically, her fingernails. Unpolished! I?ve never really noticed it before now, but SJP is pretty polish-adverse in her real life and in character. Apparently, Carrie Bradshaw rarely wears nail polish, and that?s by design. Glamour spoke to SJP about Carrie?s bare nails, and Sarah Jessica had a big explanation:
For one, she says, ?Carries a writer, so she would have been typing originally on a proper typewriter. She would have learned typing in high school, and she was a practical writer and a necessary writer and a romantic writer.?
She goes on to say that manicures for Carrie ?seemed (a) futile because it would always be messed up and (b) an obstacle on the speedy road toward thoughts being written.? While Parker adds that doesnt mean that other writers dont or cant type beautifully or easily with nails, ?it just never seemed that it was where Carrie would spend her time expressing herself.?
Executive producer Michael Patrick King agrees. ?Anything that Carrie wears that you see on camera is well thought-out by the wardrobe department and Sarah Jessica,? he tells me. ?She really tries to play both sides, the high and the low, the real and the fantasy. So notably, she never wears nail polish.?
Another reason for Carries bare nail look is time management as well as episode continuity. Aside from being the star of SATC and AJLT, Parker is busy serving as an executive producer. Shes also heavily involved in Carries looks and therefore in constant fittings with costume designers Molly Rogers and Danny Santiago, leaving little time to spend in a manicure chair.
?We also dont shoot in order,? Parker explains. ?Youre moving from scene to scene, so practically speaking, its problematic to have a nail color thats got to match every single scene. It gets in the way of speed and economy.?

The continuity issue is something I understand it would be a pain in the ass to take the time to coordinate nail polish to outfits, and then have to switch up the polish day to day depending on what scenes you?re shooting out of sequence. But the idea that writers wouldn?t wear polish? Nah. Plenty of women work with their hands AND wear polish. I admire those women, because I am not one of them. I also prefer bare nails, but I have a completely different and practical reason: my nails grow fast and I hate the look of polished nails growing out. Plus, I?ve always enjoyed the sort of natural ?French tip? look of my long, bare nails. As someone who types for hours every day, my only thing is that I can?t keep my nails too long. Which is why I keep a nail file in my desk!

We learned last year that John Corbett would come back to the Sex and the City universe for a ?multi-episode arc? in HBO Max?s And Just Like That?s second season. No one was happy about it. No one was checking for Aidan Shaw to reenter Carrie Bradshaw?s life. One thing I?ll give the original SATC series is that it was somewhat realistic in how they showed how two deeply incompatible people continued to make dumb mistakes with each other, over and over again. Like, I hated Aidan and Carrie together and maybe that was the point? Sometimes, your girlfriend dates the wrong guy and she refuses to figure her sh-t out. In Carrie?s case, she only dated wrong guys though.
Anyway, it?s looking more and more like Corbett?s reunion with the team is a lot more *intensive* than originally believed. I thought, hey, maybe it?s like a three-episode reunion wherein a 57-year-old and a 61-year-old go out to dinner, talk about their pasts and understand why they were never supposed to be together long-term. But of course that?s not what?s happening. There are already photos of Carrie and Aidan holding hands, kissing, looking loved up. The photos in this post are from this week, where SJP, Corbett and David Eigenberg (Steve) were filming in Coney Island. Congrats to SJP she?s gonna ride this dead horse until her 70s.
(I do like seeing Steve though I guess the storyline is that Steve and Aidan are still bros and possibly still business partners. Carrie?s ?hanging out with the bros? ensemble is hilariously bad too those stupid boots, and it looks like she threw a coat over her pajamas.)

Say what you will about Sarah Jessica Parker, but she gives a crap about the Met Gala and the gala?s themes. We can fight with her about how she interprets the themes and how she tends to go overboard, but I can?t fault her for caring. SJP wore Christopher John Rogers, a look which absolutely veers towards looking like a costume. This would be perfect on Bertha Russell on The Gilded Age. So that?s how SJP interpreted the theme to wear an actual costume based on The Gilded Age. And I can?t fault her for it, it?s actually really cool? She also wore so many hairpieces!!
Olympian Chloe Kim wore Giambattista Valli. I love this? It?s a big dress, it?s glamorous, the vibe can easily be interpreted to gilded glamour. It?s cool to see her at this event too.

So much of the original Sex and the City TV series feels dated, but I think people still enjoy it and enjoy talking about it because of A) the characters? friendships and B) the core romantic relationship holds up, the one between Big and Carrie. Even though SATC was an absurd fantasy in so many ways, there was a ?realness? to the mess between Big and Carrie. He treated her like sh-t. He cheated on his wife with her. He gave her enough to keep her coming back. She only wanted to show him the superficial/fake side of herself. And on and on. I always liked the Aidan character, but I thought/knew he was completely wrong for Carrie. And Sarah Jessica Parker knows it too. She was asked again about Big and Aidan and all of that:
Sarah Jessica Parker finally reveals her true feelings about Carrie Bradshaw?s choice in men. Her ?Sex and the City? character famously dated Aidan (John Corbett) during Season 3 when she cheated on him with her on-again-off-again love interest John Preston, a.k.a. Mr. Big (Chris Noth). Bradshaw ultimately married Big, but kissed Aiden after a chance meeting in Abu Dhabi in the second film.
?As you can imagine, this puts me in a terrible position,? Parker said when she was asked which guy she would?ve chosen for Carrie on ?The Bradshaw Boys? podcast, where she was invited to speak about her new wine, Invivo X. ?There is a very quick and simple answer. You have to be Team Big?I guess, only because you can?t tell a story that long and not in the most conventional way kind of root for that ending. And I love Chris Noth so much, and it felt wonderfully and skillfully written by Michael Patrick [King].?
However, the 54-year-old actress still thinks any girl would be lucky to have Aidan.
?I love John Corbett so much and I loved Aidan. I loved his Aidan,? she said. ?The best of both worlds is in fact having your cake and eating it too. So I feel like I got both teams.? She added conclusively, ?Ultimately, Carrie should have ended up with Big, but it was a delight to mess around before she arrived at that.?

As I get older, my feelings on all of these characters change, honestly. Aidan was the guy who would have made Carrie a better person, who would have challenged her and made her grow (up). But ultimately, she didn?t want that she wanted Big, she wanted the fantasy, she wanted the guy who would be ?withholding? and play games with her. But yes, at a story level, of course Carrie had to end up with Big. That?s the only thing that would have made sense. And frankly, Big and Carrie deserved each other.

I don?t decorate my house or my yard for Halloween. I figure that all of the falling leaves are autumn-y enough. Plus, I?m super-lazy about that sort of thing. As much as I?d like to be the kind of person who arranges gourds on my front steps, I?m not made of gourd money, and plus I just don?t want to take the time and effort. But imagine that you have the time, the money, the desire and the kind of judgy neighbors who expect you to decorate for Halloween with all manner of tasteful gourdification. Imagine you are Sarah Jessica Parker and you decorate the steps of your West Village brownstone with elegant pumpkins. Now imagine that The Great Pumpkin Thief of the West Village terrorizes your neighborhood in the dead of night. That?s just what happened:

Of all the WTF-branding strategies, the most bizarre is probably? Jeremy Renner, honestly. But this one is kind of strange too. Sarah Jessica Parker is putting her name on WINE. She is currently shilling for Invivo X, Sarah Jessica Parker Sauvignon Blanc. ?Wine moms? are a thing and there?s really been a push for all things ?wine o?clock? for women specifically. Some of it is organic a growing interest in wine in America, increased production in domestic wines in America and part of it really is a strategy at play to encourage moms to get their wine on. I associate it with Real Housewives. So maybe it isn?t such a bad look for SJP she?s part of that demo too, kind of. Anyway, now we get interviews from SJP about how much she loves wine. From Entertainment Tonight & THR:
Producing the wine with a New Zealand company: ?I had not ever pondered about producing a Sauvignon Blanc. I thought it was a complicated wine and I felt like people had very strong opinions about it, so I just used to stick to Chardonnay.?
How it came about: Meeting the two men behind Invivo Wines, Rob Cameron and Tim Lightbourne, changed Parkers perception and got her excited about the white wine she previously found to be intimidating. ?They taught me all about it, and we talked about what we wanted to achieve, how this Sauvignon Blanc wouldn?t feel rarefied and forbidden. We got to blend an unusual, yet surprisingly rogue, Sauvignon Blanc.And I?m mad for it. I was terrified I wouldn?t be able to say that when the first bottle arrived. But it?s delectable!?
Discovering that she loves wine: I love a glass of wine at night, I love it. I never thought that would be something I would say. It took me a really long time to understand the benefits. I dont know why. I think it was the three children hitting a certain age. I was like, What are you doing? Why are you not with your body inside a fridge finding a glass of wine somewhere?
She acknowledges that Wine Life isn?t for everybody: And its not for everybody. I will say theres lots of ways to alleviate stress, and I want to be very thoughtful about parenting. Its a wonder and its chaotic and challenging and surprising, and it is often exhausting, and this is not the only way.
Her son is a few years away from going to college: I cant know, I cant imagine what that feeling is to say goodbye to a child and hope youve left them with everything they need, here and here, she says, pointing to her head and heart.

I?m glad she acknowledges that Wine Lyfe isn?t for everyone. When I drank, I could only do white wines or a rose, and even then, I usually ended up with a massive headache after one glass. As I get older, I?m starting to believe that I have a mild allergy to certain kinds of liquor and wine. Anyway, wine life and SJP wine. It?s a thing. Get on board. I find it slightly tacky, but whatever. I?m sure people will buy the wine if it?s good enough.

Sarah Jessica Parker did an interview with NPR?s Fresh Air to promote the latest season of HBO?s Divorce. Does anyone watch that? I never have, because whenever I see the trailers/promos for it, I always think it looks so stupid. Maybe I?m not the target audience, but it feels very ?Eat Pray Love but she just stayed in New York and whined.? Maybe I?m wrong and it?s a brilliant character study or something. Anyway, this Fresh Air interview was interesting

Here are some photos of Sarah Jessica Parker and Andy Cohen at the 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in NYC over the weekend. These photos are notable for the fashion (which is why I?m covering them) but they?re also notable because this was what SJP and Andy did instead of attending tonight?s Met Gala. SJP always goes to the Met Gala, and Andy is always her date. I don?t think Matthew Broderick gives a sh-t about any of this, and SJP likely has more fun at these events when she goes with Andy. I feel like they bring out their worst Mean Girl antics in each other though. In any case, Andy Cohen told Entertainment Tonight that they aren?t going to the Met Gala this year because they both have to work.
Anyway, let?s talk fashion SJP wore this insane Elie Saab gown to the GLAAD event. The thing is, I love the fabric and the colors. I absolutely adore these shades of blue, and the fabric looks rich and beautiful. But of course I feel like SJP put her stink on it with those sleeves and with that styling. The sleeves make this look like a costume, and the styling is so blah. Wow, a center part on flat-ironed hair? Never seen that before, SJP. The shower puff used as a hat? How avant-garde! This is what we get because we?re not getting SJP-Met Gala photos.
