It?s just been announced this morning: Angelina Jolie is going to Venice!! I mean, I hope she?s going to Venice, because Pablo Larrain?s Maria has been accepted into the Venice Film Festival?s in-competition line-up. Maria is Larrain?s latest bio-pic of a famous and complicated woman, this time Maria Callas, with Angelina starring as Callas. Maria will compete against Todd Phillips? Joker: Folie Deux, Pedro Almodovar?s The Room Next Door, Luis Ortega?s Kill the Jockey and many others. I seriously hope Angelina gears up and shows up in Venice.
Unfortunately, there might be some complications in Venice. Venice organizers have also added Jon Watts? Wolfs to their out-of-competition line-up. Wolfs is the dumb buddy-comedy starring that ratfker George Clooney and his good buddy Brad Pitt. The Hollywood Reporter previewed this potential situation last month, that Clooney would want Wolfs to premiere in Venice and the two premieres (Wolfs and Maria) would cause some issues. The festival better do everything to ensure that Angelina gets prioritized and that the two premieres are several days apart.
Meanwhile, some more film festival news for Angelina: her directorial effort, Without Blood, will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Without Blood stars Salma Hayek and Demin Bichir, and Angelina directed it before the actors and writers strikes last year. So we?ll get Angelina in Toronto too! What a year.

Tuesday was Angelina Jolie?s 49th birthday! Happy birthday to our Gemini queen. Angelina is like the Gemini poster child, I swear to God. Angelina has been in the news in recent weeks because her middle daughter Shiloh filed to change her surname on her 18th birthday. Shiloh?s legal name will soon be Shiloh Jolie, not Shiloh Jolie-Pitt. Brad Pitt?s team is currently trying to blame Angelina or act like Angelina ?alienated? the kids from their (abusive) father. That is not the case. In the meantime, People Mag had this exclusive about Angelina?s birthday plans this week:
Angelina Jolie is keeping her birthday low-key. As Jolie turns 49 on Tuesday, June 4, a source close to the actress tells PEOPLE that Jolie is spending the day with her children: Maddox, 22, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, Pax, 20, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 15.
?Angelina will celebrate her birthday with a quiet day at home with her kids. Zahara is home from college, and she looks forward to everyone spending the day together, the source says.
Most recently, Jolie produced the Broadway musical adaptation of The Outsiders along with her daughter Vivienne, who is also working on the production as her mothers assistant. Jolie was nominated for co-producing the musical adaptation of S.E. Hintons 1967 book The Outsiders, which is up for 12 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical.

?Zahara is home from college? Angelina misses Zahara so much! She probably planned the whole week around Zahara being home. Brad Pitt has repeatedly shown the world that he treats his biological kids differently than his adopted kids, and that?s a huge reason why all of the kids want nothing to do with him. Zahara and Shiloh are exceptionally close sisters. Maddox and Pax adore their younger siblings and they?re very protective of their mother. All of the hate and accusations thrown at Angelina, and it turns out that she fostered a loving and supportive family dynamic with all six kids.

Angelina Jolie is a big Broadway producer now, on the musical adaptation of The Outsiders. Angelina?s daughter Vivienne is apparently a huge theater/musical-theater geek, which we realized when Vivienne dragged her mother to easily a dozen regional performances of Dear Evan Hansen. Well, now that Angelina is a Broadway producer, she gets invited to other Broadway opening nights. Which is what happened last night Angelina and Vivienne came out to support Reefer Madness: The Musical. They posed with Kristen Bell, who produced this stage show.
Angelina?s outfit here is so cool a slim suit with a t-shirt, which has a print of a necktie. I love that she didn?t take off her shades too. Vivienne looks cute! I get the feeling that Vivienne is the ?normcore? kid, Shiloh is a full tomboy and Zahara is the girly-girl. All of those kids ride for their mom so hard. As we discussed, Vivienne has dropped ?Pitt? from her surname in the playbill for The Outsiders. Just this week, Shiloh filed paperwork to drop ?Pitt? from her name legally? on her 18th birthday. Zahara seems to have dropped Pitt from her name too, although it?s unclear if she?s done so legally.
Meanwhile, post-Cannes Film Festival, other festivals are trying to get some hype. The Venice Film Festival will likely host the global premieres of Joker 2: Folie a Deux AND Pablo Larrain?s Maria. Thats the Larrain-style bio-pic of Maria Callas, starring Angelina. Angelina in Venice towards the end of the summer? I hope it happens!

A few years ago, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt spent months dragging her mother to regional performances of Dear Evan Hansen. I?m pretty sure Angelina Jolie saw that musical more than a dozen times. That?s when we knew Vivienne is a musical theater girlie. She?s a theater nerd. This was confirmed by Angelina last summer, when she announced that she would step in as a producer on a Broadway-bound musical adaptation of The Outsiders. Vivienne had seen the musical first and she dragged her mother to it and convinced Angelina to invest and produce. Angelina also announced that Vivienne would step in as her assistant as the musical transferred to Broadway. All of which means that Vivienne and Angelina both walked the carpet last night for the opening night of The Outsiders.
Angelina looked amazing so healthy, so happy, so proud to be there with those theater people, so proud of Vivienne too. Vivienne happily posed with the cast and they all seem to get along really well. I would not have chosen these colors for Angelina, but she looked gorgeous in her satin (?) gown and cape. I haven?t seen any IDs for Angelina?s look, but I would guess that these are pieces designed by Atelier Jolie, the fashion collective she founded last year. The earrings are especially bonkers! Angelina spoke to People Magazine exclusively about the Broadway opening:
The Outsiders on Broadway is a family affair for Angelina Jolie and daughter Vivienne.
Viv is a young artist who focuses her efforts on her support of others, the actress, 48, tells PEOPLE ahead of the April 11 opening of Broadways adaption of The Outsiders, which she co-produced. Her daughter worked on the production as a volunteer assistant. Jolie described how Vivienne, 15, got her into the musical, She saw an early workshop a few times and then invited me to it.
PEOPLE previously reported that the pair also met with the books author S. E. Hinton, who famously wrote The Outsiders as a high-school student in the 1960s. Of Vivienne, Jolie adds, She has been there to assist in any way she can and has learned so much from [score and co-book writer] Justin Levine and the whole creative team.
Jolie tells PEOPLE that it?s been a privilege to be a part of the process of bringing The Outsiders to the Great White Way, adding, I have so much respect for Broadway and all who work within.
I?m excited for audiences to see it, she continues. I?ve been in the theatre watching as the first reactions came in, including the often very emotional reaction from young people. It?s very moving.

Previously, Angelina described Vivienne as someone who loved to work with creative people behind the scenes. Angelina said that Viv reminds her of her mother, Marcheline Bertrand. Which is really beautiful? Angelina lost Marcheline in 2007, and then welcomed Viv and Knox in 2008. Can?t believe Knox and Viv turn 16 years old in July!!

Angelina Jolie was seen out with some of her kids yesterday in New York. While she hasn?t confirmed it, I believe she?s already found a New York apartment to base herself out of now that she has so much business in New York. Her fashion collective, Atelier Jolie, is based out of Jean-Michel Basquiat?s old studio, plus Jolie is executive producing a Broadway musical (The Outsiders). I assume most or all of her kids are moving to New York with her.
Yesterday, she was seen leaving the Basquiat studio/Atelier Jolie headquarters with Zahara and Pax. I love Pax?s energy around his mom he?s probably seen his mom?s bodyguards have her back all of his life, so he sort of assumes the same kind of body language. Meanwhile, Zahara was also acting protective of her mom, sort of leading Angelina out of the building. I?ve seen photos of Knox on other sites he was at the Basquiat studio as well, although we don?t have any photos of him. I wonder if Angelina and the kids spent Christmas in New York?
The New York Times ran a piece this week about the Basquiat studio and the long history of that one building, through Prohibition and New York gangs and artists and more. It?s a great piece. Reportedly, Angelina has leased it for years and she has so many big plans for Atelier Jolie.
PS? Angelina is such a goth princess. I love her coat and trousers here. Look, she got a massive new tote!

Angelina Jolie covers the latest issue of WSJ. Magazine. It?s a surprising piece, written by Elisa Lipsky-Karasz, which largely ignores the tabloid version of Jolie and barely touches the divorce from Brad Pitt. Jolie spent years healing with her children after the Pitt marriage went t-ts up in 2016, but slowly and steadily, she?s been rebuilding her life. She?s back to taking acting roles with some regularity. She?s directed another movie (Without Blood), and she?s filming the Maria Callas bio-pic. She also confirms, in this piece, that she?s signed on to a third Maleficent movie (no additional details). While she?s still being sued by and countersuing Brad Pitt over the sale of her half of Miraval, she?s already using the money from the sale to start Atelier Jolie. Which seems to be the main point of this WSJ. piece Jolie is hyping, in her hilariously awkward way, her new thing, this fashion collective she?s dreamt up. You can read the full piece here. Playing Maria Callas: ?I?m a little terrified to do it. I?m the one who whispers ?Happy Birthday? at the party. My body reacts very strongly to stress. My blood sugar goes up and down. I suddenly had Bell?s palsy six months before my divorce.?
The past seven years, where she was mostly at home in LA: ?We had to heal. There are things we needed to heal from.?
On Hollywood today: ?I wouldn?t be an actress today,? says Jolie. Maybe theater, she caveats, but not Hollywood. ?When I was starting out, it wasn?t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.?
Winning an Oscar at 24: ?Because I grew up around Hollywood, I was never very impressed with it. I never bought into it as significant or important.?
Her closest friends are refugees: ?There?s a reason people who have been through hardship are also much more honest and much more connected, and I am more relaxed with them. Why do I like spending time with people who?ve survived and are refugees? They?ve confronted so much in life that it brings forward not just strength, but humanity. I realized my closest friends are refugees. Maybe four out of six of the women that I am close to are from war and conflict.?
No social life: Meanwhile, in L.A., ?I don?t really have?a social life,? says Jolie. She says she isn?t currently dating.
Her children are the people closest to her: ?They are the closest people to me and my life, and they?re my close friends. We?re seven very different people, which is our strength.?
The public gave her a career: ?They?ve also chosen how they want you. Since I was young, people liked the part of me that?s pretty tough and maybe a bit wild?that?s the part that I think people enjoy. I?m not the one [who] you want to hear about my pain or my sadness. You know, that?s not entertaining.?
Jolie plans to eventually leave L.A. ?It?s part of what happened after my divorce. I lost the ability to live and travel as freely. I will move when I can,? she says, and spend more time at her home in Cambodia. ?I grew up in quite a shallow place,. Of all the places in the world, Hollywood is not a healthy place. So you seek authenticity.?
On Atelier Jolie: She also seems to have an almost compulsive need to work. ?I can?t stop. I always think there?s like a fight coming.? Jolie says people around her laughed when she told them about her new venture: ?You, in fashion? No.? ?I?ve never been to a fashion show or Met Ball my entire life.?
She has so many ideas for Atelier Jolie, but she knows it will run at a loss: ?I?ll probably lose money, maybe even for a while,? says Jolie. The 6,600-square-foot space was advertised at $60,000 per month for a minimum 10-year lease; a representative for the brand declined to share the terms of the lease but said Jolie is paying less and isn?t committed to 10 years. ?If I can eventually put into practice some things that I think are improvements and I just break even, that?s a huge victory.?
She consulted human rights lawyers before consulting designers: ?What would be an ethical business? We are trying to reverse-engineer it a little bit. I don?t know the answers. Can we avoid doing real damage?not only to the earth, but the garment workers? ? Is it possible that I could go somewhere and enjoy making clothes, enjoy wearing clothes and not hurt anybody? And actually maybe treat people well??
Her style: ?My daughter jokes that I wear too many trench coats. It?s just like a hiding thing.?
She?s comfortable with her body now: ?It?s like I see my scars and my things, and I feel like I?ve lived. And I?m having these big experiences, and I have this map of this complex body that?s changed over time. You and I both know that a woman with a full life is very sexy.?

I want her to get back with Jonny Lee Miller so badly, my god. I feel like they would be so good together now, at this age. I know that?s far from the point of this interview, but I honestly feel like she needs to let one good man in for a weekend and build from there. As for Atelier Jolie, WSJ. Mag lists all of the smaller projects she?s building within the Basquiat studio, not just full fashion design, but a cafe and sewing lessons and classes that people can take. It sounds really cool, like a modern fashion-based commune. She?s also already on her way out of LA she?s reportedly apartment-hunting in New York as we speak, and now that the kids are older, I would imagine she?ll be traveling a lot more.

Her fashion collective, Atelier Jolie, is now housed in New York. She?s a producer on a Broadway-bound show. She also just likes the vibe of NYC she?s been out and about, going to brunch with friends and stopping by a legendary tattoo parlor. She went to Mr. K to get some new ink during her most recent trip, and Mr. K posted a photo to let people know that he worked on Jolie, but the actual tattoos were blurred out:

Angelina Jolie has been in New York all week with Vivienne and Pax. Yesterday, she was photographed going in and out of the Mercer Hotel, and a few days ago, she was seen going out to a business lunch with Pax. All of Angelina?s ?New York fashion? looks are pretty great. I mean, she?s a goth girl and she loves wearing black, but even wearing black in New York, stands out. Pax was also carrying some camera equipment. No one knows what that was about.
As we keep discussing, Jolie has a lot of business in New York these days. Atelier Jolie, the fashion collective she founded this year, is now housed in Jean-Michel Basquiat?s old studio in NYC. She?s also producing a Broadway production of The Outsiders, and little Vivienne will be Jolie?s ?voluntary assistant.? I noticed that anti-Jolie people were screaming, crying and throwing up about how that makes Vivienne a nepo-baby. Like? you think Angelina hiring her 15-year-old daughter as an intern is a nepo-baby move? If this was about nepotism, surely Jolie would have demanded that Vivienne have a ROLE on stage in her Broadway production? Internships are literally the bare-minimum of nepotism. I would go so far as to say that more celebrity parents should use this path get their kids an internship and show them how the system works behind-the-scenes.
Meanwhile, Angelina?s third ex-husband continues to FAFO. Nouvel the company which holds 50% of Chateau Miraval, which Angelina sold to Yuri Shefler has now countersued Brad Pitt and the Perrin family. Weirdly, none of the American sites have picked up on the countersuit, but the countersuit is full of all kinds of amazing details. Basically, Jolie?s sale of Nouvel to Stoli/Tenute del Mondo has led to Shefler uncovering all kinds of underhanded, boneheaded and flatly criminal dealings within Miraval. You can follow the tweet-thread below. At some point, the American media needs to get off Pitt?s dk and actually report on what?s really happening with all of these Miraval lawsuits.

Angelina Jolie has been visiting New York pretty consistently in recent months. She?s based herself in Los Angeles for the past seven years, ever since she filed for divorce in 2016 she ended up buying a mansion which is located pretty close to Brad Pitt?s Los Feliz compound, only Pitt recently sold the compound. So I did wonder why she was making so many trips to New York, hoping that it was possibly about spending time with Jonny Lee Miller. She often brings her kids to NYC, and in late June, she was in the city with Zahara, Pax and Shiloh. So, is she changing her home base? Is she looking for residential real estate? Apparently not Art News reports that Angelina was looking for commercial space for her new fashion collective, Atelier Jolie. So she decided to rent a very famous address which was once Jean-Michel Basquiat?s work space.
The Manhattan property where Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat lived and worked will be taken over by actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie. The deal for the property, located at 57 Great Jones Street, was confirmed today by John Roesch and Garrett Kelly, both directors at the real estate agency Meridian Capital Group. Jolie will rent the space for her latest creative venture, Atelier Jolie, under long-term commercial use for eight years.
The interior space features 6,600 square feet of space across three floors. The exterior of the building is adorned in street art, and Jolie will keep it that way as a public tribute to Basquiat, who started his career as one half of the graffiti art duo SAMO.
?[Jolie] wanted to preserve the older art on [the building] and keep that Basquiat feel to the space,? said Roesch.
?She loved the facade of the building and it being tagged up with the street art as a memorial for Basquiat,? Kelly added.
Basquiat rented the second-floor space from Warhol shortly after they first met. Warhol originally bought the building in 1970.
Prior to Warhol?s purchase, the property already had a rich history. Originally constructed in the 1860s, it was purchased by Paolo Antonio Vaccarelli?aka the gangster Paul Kelly?who opened the Brighton Athletic Club there in 1904. The building was subsequently used as a metal works business and kitchen supply company until 1970. Most recently, the property was home to the exclusive Japanese restaurant Bohemian.
Atelier Jolie will serve as a workshop opportunity for under-represented tailors and artisans around the world. Those participating will be able to work and showcase their creations at the 57 Great Jones Street location. Jolie plans to open her new business ?as quickly as possible,? according to Roesch. The property was previously on the market with Meridian Capital Group for $60,000 per month for a minimum of 10 years.

God that?s expensive. I get it, and I get why it?s so expensive, even beyond the physical space of it, but also the pedigree. So, I wondered what Atelier Jolie would actually entail and what kind of business it would be and how it would be set up. We?re getting a better look at all of that refugee creators will be creating capsule collections and they?ll likely collaborate with existing design houses too. The first collab is with Chloe. Will Atelier Jolie designers actually come into this Basquiat property to work, or will this be more of a show space? Will they show at New York Fashion Week? Time will tell. It?s interesting though. Also: do you think Angelina actually will buy or rent a residential property in New York so she can manage this project close-by?

Here are some photos of Angelina Jolie and Zahara out in New York last week. Angelina clearly misses Zahara like crazy, and in Zahara?s first year at Spelman College, Angelina looked for any excuse to fly to Atlanta to see her daughter, and any time Zahara had time off, Angelina arranged for a girls? trip to New York and more. I assume the trip last week was something fun for Zahara after her spring semester ended.
Meanwhile, at the end of 2022, Jolie stepped down from her position of special envoy to the UNHCR. She had worked with the UNHCR (in different positions) for 21 years. Many of us Jolie-stans wondered what she would do next, whether she would work for some smaller refugee organization. Well, we?re getting an answer? sort of. Angelina has announced that she?s starting Atelier Jolie, which is a fashion collective which will employ refugees and hopefully utilize some refugee fashion creatives.
The actress, director, and former United Nations goodwill ambassador and special envoy is launching Atelier Jolie, a new purpose-driven brand that will utilize deadstock and tap into the abilities of ?refugees and other talented, under-appreciated groups, with positions of dignity based on skill.?
Jolie posted the news on her Instagram account, writing, ?I?m starting something new today?a collective where everyone can create Atelier Jolie is a place for creative people to collaborate with a skilled and diverse family of expert tailors, pattern makers, and artisans from around the world. It stems for my appreciation and deep respect for the many tailors and makers I?ve worked with over the years, a desire to make use of the high quality vintage material and deadstock material already available, and also to be part of a movement to cultivate more self-expression.?
More than 100 million tons of textile waste dead-end in landfills every year. Atelier Jolie seems designed to address that crisis. According to the brand website: ?You will be able to repair or upcycle pieces from your closet you wish to revive, perfecting fit, breathing new life into what could have been thrown away, and creating quality heirloom garments with personal meaning.?
The mention of refugees is intriguing given the end last week of Title 42, a pandemic-era measure that allowed authorities to quickly turn back migrants on public health grounds. The U.S. could see record numbers of asylum seekers moving forward. Whatever Atelier Jolie becomes, Jolie is particularly well-placed to disrupt in this area.

I wonder if this collective is going to be LA-based or international or what. How are they getting their hands on ?deadstock? and what will the larger organization look like? I don?t doubt Angelina, but it just sounds like a huge project. Perhaps she?s already employing refugee creatives to work out this enormous undertaking. It will be interesting to see? a collective making sack dresses out of deadstock. Please, let some of those refugee stylists get ahold of Angelina and get her to wear some different silhouettes!
