Angelina Jolie discusses how Atelier Jolie has evolved into' a non-profit art charity
In 2023, Angelina Jolie started Atelier Jolie. She signed an eight-year lease on Jean-Michel Basquiat?s old workspace/living space, and she dreamed of transforming the building into a half-business/half-charity which would provide resources and attention for refugee designers and creators. Originally, the idea was based on fashion as in, bring in refugee creatives to design eco-conscious clothing lines and capsule collections. They did that for more than a year, but it looks like that idea has been partially abandoned. Now the building is partly devoted to a cafe (Eat Offbeat) and a more freewheeling arts-and-advocacy space in which important discussions are facilitated, lectures are given and also, Angelina is now providing gallery space for artists? From Jolie?s interview/profile in the NY Times this week:

The original vision for Atelier Jolie: For a little over a year, she has endeavored to build Atelier Jolie into a hub for artists and makers ? and chefs, students and Broadway stars. The building comes with an almost unparalleled artistic pedigree: 57 Great Jones Street was once owned by Andy Warhol, and inhabited by Jean-Michel Basquiat, who had his studio there until his death in 1988. Jolie?s dream was for the space to once again be a cultural locus, a clubhouse full of inspired and international creatives, and also a magnet for a curious public ? to come and browse, take a class, refuel with a slice of orange almond cake at the global-cuisine cafe, Eat Offbeat. It did not immediately work out as she envisioned. ?It?s been tricky,? she said in a recent interview. ?I found that this has been a lot of what not to do.?

Atelier Jolie is no longer about fashion: Its initial incarnation was as a pop-up fashion studio for visiting designers, ?because I think the world?s most interested in that,? she said. ?People focus on fashion. But, it was very quickly clear to me that that wasn?t going to be my love,? in part because she rejected the environmental impact of the typical fashion cycle ? water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, landfill-fueling consumption. ?I don?t want to tell people that they need to buy something new every few months.?

Now she?s giving away space to artists for free: So she pivoted, expanding her web and sharing the rarest New York commodity: square footage. For free. The French multimedia artist Prune Nourry, who helped organize the Neshat event as part of an exhibition called ?Strand for Women,? has become the atelier?s artist-in-residence, with a second-floor studio where she expects to sculpt sometimes mammoth works over the next two years.

Angelina is a connector: In her circles, she is known as a connector, who is quick to open her home, offer help and learn one-on-one; she has painted, danced and attended silk-screening, felting and cooking classes at Atelier Jolie. ?I wanted a place where I could spend time with local artists,? she said. She hoped to conjure the vibe of a film set, she said, especially one with a crew from the far-flung corners of the world: ?You can feel that feeling of being purposeful with others.?

How Atelier Jolie is classified: Atelier Jolie, a for-profit public benefit corporation (a certified B Corp) with the goal of social good, is not charging Invisible Dog any rent for its yearlong residency. In Brooklyn, the gallery needed $500,000 annually ?just to open the door,? Zayan said, and regularly held fund-raisers. Now donations can support work directly. ?We?re doing well, and we?re building a new model, Jolie said of the financial prospects of Atelier Jolie, which has an eight-year lease on the building. Zayan aims to make it a destination for downtown and beyond, just as Invisible Dog was in the Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn. And Jolie has been an eager partner. They communicate almost daily, he said. ?When you email her, you never know where she is, what time zone, but she answers you immediately. She?s very involved.?

How she came to Basquiat?s old building: Jolie loved the squat, sprayed-up building (which had recently housed a restaurant) when she first saw it in 2023 with one of her daughters. ?I wasn?t interested in being on the Upper East Side,? she said, explaining why she sought out the downtown neighborhoods she had wound through in her 20s, while studying film at New York University. But, she said, ?I was also intimidated by the history.? She got in touch with Basquiat?s sisters, who gave the atelier their blessing, and turn up at events. In conversations this month, Jolie seemed frustrated that the atelier was viewed as another exclusive downtown boutique. ?The act of creation should be accessible to everyone,? she said.

Where she stays when she?s in NYC: She was speaking from a Manhattan hotel room; the New York apartment she bought in her 20s is now inhabited by one of her sons, and is a crash pad for his five siblings. Mom is welcome ? sometimes. ?The other day I said I was going to pop by, and he was like, can you just give me a day to clean?? she said. ?I thought, I appreciate that, you should clean up for your mother. But also, how bad is it??

[From The NY Times]

?A for-profit public benefit corporation (a certified B Corp)? ah, well that sort of explains why it feels like Angelina is not interested in turning this into any kind of profit-generating anything. She came up with the concept of Atelier Jolie shortly after she finally sold her half of Chateau Miraval. As in, she found herself with $60 million and it was burning a hole in her pocket, so she put this together. That?s what it feels like too, that Angelina is just paying for everything and running the space as a not-for-profit art charity. It?s a shame too while I love that she?s doing this, I also wish Gen Xer Jolie would participate in ?hustle culture? a little bit, and just find a way to turn this into a revenue-generator. Sell Atelier Jolie merch, bring in creatives to make cool t-shirts which can be sold in the gift shop, SOMETHING. It?s giving ?rich woman becomes a patron to the arts? but Jolie thinks she?s reinventing the wheel.

Pollen is worse than ever this year, how can you minimize allergies?
Added 3 days agoSource: CeleBitchy
Pollen is worse than ever this year, how can you minimize allergies?
Springtime is upon us! Daylight Saving began, so it?s lighter out, and of course the season was officially ushered in on March 20. Personally, I can always confirm this time of year even without a calendar, because my NYC apartment building still hasn?t shut off the radiators so I?m miserably overheating (I refuse to pay for air conditioning this early and yes I?ve opened every window I can!). And then there?s another signature irritant of the season: allergies. People Mag turned to Dr. Christina Ciaccio, chief of pediatric allergy and immunology at University of Chicago Medical Center, who shared some frankly alarming info about this year?s pollen. Apparently, it?s worse than ever (why should pollen be different than any other sector right now?) because ?Climate warming and increased CO2 levels favor pollen seasons that start earlier ? and it?s more potent pollen.? But the doctor was also kind enough to share tips for surviving and minimizing allergies this year:

How should we treat symptoms?

?Nasal steroids are the most effective medications. ? And antihistamines, the ones that last 12 to 24 hours. Those are the second generation antihistamines as opposed to the first generation that lasted four to six hours and were very sedating. ? Antihistamines work within 15 minutes to an hour of when you take them, so you can just take them on your bad days. If you have bad allergies, you can take both nasal steroids and antihistamines together.?

What?s the best relief for itchy eyes?

?Showering can help. You could put a cold, wet washcloth on your eyes, and gently squeeze the cloth to irrigate out the pollen. And there are great over-the-counter eye drops that are antihistamines. My tip is if you keep them in the refrigerator, it?s even more soothing when you put them in your eye.?

What should you avoid?

?Nasal decongestants. You can have a rebound effect. You really shouldn?t use those more than a couple days. If you have a whole season of allergies and use them all season, when you try and stop it, then it?s almost like you?re addicted to it and you can?t stop. People can run into problems with that.?

Should we just stay inside?

?Some people have to turn on the air conditioner and seal up windows during high-pollen season, but we don?t discourage people from going outside, especially kids. We want them to be playing outside at any time of year they can be playing outside. We would rather recommend someone take a medication to be able to go outside and walk around and get the appropriate exercise, rather than staying indoors with air-conditioning and not doing anything. But as soon as you come in, jump in the shower, and get the pollen off. Throw your clothes in the wash. Don?t be tempted to re-wear them. Don?t lay your clothes on the bed and get pollen all over the bed.?

What should you keep in your allergy care kit?

?Oral antihistamines: Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra and Xyzal are the most common, but generics are fine too. Some are a bit stronger and more likely to be sedating. ? And some are much less sedating, but maybe a little bit weaker. It just depends on how you tolerate medications in general so you can try different antihistamines. Nasal steroids: They are the most effective allergy medication, but the caveat is it takes several days for them to become effective. You need to start them early. Flonase is an over the counter option. And sinus irrigation [like a neti pot]: Using salt water can clear pollen out of your sinuses and can help a lot.?

[From People]

There you have it, folks ? drug up and go outside! (Or still stay inside!) I appreciated the doctor?s points on disrobing and refreshing when you come home, and I?m definitely guilty of putting my clothes down on my bed, so I?ll stop doing that. The thing about putting eye drops in the refrigerator also leapt out at me, but I think I might find the extra cold more startling than soothing! There are even more tips in the full article, things like you know it?s allergies if your primary symptom is itchiness, whereas a flu is more likely to involve a fever. And she also said she thought air purifiers aren?t worth the cost, unless you live with an animal you?re allergic to, and that while honey or bee pollen might feel soothing (people have tried them for treating symptoms), the science actually works the other way, in that the pollen we find irritating is from wind-pollinated trees as opposed to insect-pollinated plants.

Now go forth and prosper in the face of pollen!

Ben Affleck on his recent divorce: 'there's no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue'
Ben Affleck covers the latest issue of GQ. This is his first major interview in more than a year, and his first interview since his second marriage collapsed and ended in divorce. Ben talks a lot in this piece, about his career, about fame, about the FBI visiting his house and about his ex-wives. The FBI story is weirdly what many outlets have used in their headlines, but the story is boring as sh-t FBI agents visited all of the houses in Ben?s neighborhood because there was a break-in at a federal official?s home nearby. The feds didn?t even know they stopped by Ben Affleck?s house. There. That?s the story. Obviously, I?m much more interested in what he has to say about Jennifer Lopez and why their marriage suddenly went t-ts up. He talks in circles and tries to say that he respects J.Lo but something happened but there was no soap opera but its over. Weird. Some highlights:

The constant attention he gets on a daily basis: ?I?m aware that it?s absurd and it?s ridiculous. There?s nothing newsworthy at all about the day-to-day events of my life or the conversation I have with one person or another person that?s photographed? I?m definitely aware of the cosmic joke of it all. What I?ve ended up focusing on is: Look, I know what?s going on in my life. And also, really more importantly, my kids know. We used to have a thing, my ex-wife and I, when they would see something on a supermarket stand, we would say, well, ?You know this isn?t always true because if it were, you would have 15 brothers or sisters or whatever the number of stories is where they said that your mom was pregnant.? And I?m really lucky that I have a really good co-parent and partner in Jennifer Garner, the kids? mom, who?s wonderful and great and we work together well. It?s more of a headache than anything else and there certainly are worse things.

Participating in Jennifer Lopez?s ?The Greatest Love Story Never Told?: ?Part of it was, ?Okay, if I?m going to participate in this, I want to try to do it in an honest way and in a way that?s interesting.? Because I thought it was an interesting examination. Like I mentioned to you before, there are a lot of people who I think have handled celebrity more adeptly and more adroitly than I have, Jennifer among them. My temperament is to be a little bit more reserved and private than hers. As happens in relationships, you don?t always have the same attitude towards these things. And so I thought, Oh, this is interesting because how do you reconcile that? Because exactly what you said is true. I love and support this person. I believe in them. They?re great. I want people to see that. And I think the thing that I said in that documentary or the piece that they used was where I said, You don?t marry a ship captain and then say, ?Well, I don?t like going out in the water.? You?ve got to own what you knew going into any relationship. And I think it?s important to say that wasn?t the cause of some major fracture. It?s not like you can watch that documentary and go, ?Oh, now I understand the issues that these two had.?

Matt Damon loves to act, Ben loves to direct: ?As much as I want to be an actor, I find it the most satisfying directing movies. Now, I thought you were going to compare our acting careers, to which I would?ve said, well, Matt learned and knew earlier than I did to really key in on the director as the fundamental basis on which he?s going to make a decision whether to do a movie or not, which was a very wise choice. And also he has certainly had opportunities to do movies that like?it?s not like I was saying, ?No, Scorsese, no, Spielberg, I?m not going to be in your movie.? We?re in situations of our opportunities, and we?re subject to that.

Talking about Jennifer Lopez: ?Well, on the one hand there?s the first feeling, which is like, well, I hope I was clear about, when you asked me about Jen and the documentary and I talked about that and my sort of personal life a little bit, which I don?t mind doing as long as my actual feelings and intentions and beliefs are communicated, which I hope I was clear that really this is somebody I have a lot of respect for. And I get wanting to divine or explore the kind of differences in perspective that we have in terms of how a person feels comfortable approaching the line between public and private life. But I really hope that whatever you use doesn?t suggest that I have any negativity or judgment or anything regarding that. I have nothing but respect. I guess there?s a tendency to look at breakups and want to identify root causes or something. But honestly, like I said, the truth is much more quotidian than probably people would believe or would be interesting.

His divorce from J.Lo wasn?t a big soap opera: ?Yeah, there?s no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue. The truth is, when you talk to somebody, ?Hey, what happened?? Well, there is no: ?This is what happened.? It?s just a story about people trying to figure out their lives and relationships in ways that we all sort of normally do. And as you get older, this is true for me, I assume it?s true for most people, there is no ?So-and-so did this? or ?This was the big event.? It?s really, it sounds more like a couple?s therapy session, which?you would tune out of someone else?s couple?s therapy after a while. For one thing, you start going, ?Okay, clearly this person has got these issues. Clearly they have these issues.? And the reason I don?t want to share that is just sort of embarrassing. It feels vulnerable.

[From GQ]

Zach Baron wrote this for GQ and I appreciate that he didn?t press Affleck on any of the personal stuff, and I think Affleck might have been shocked by that lack of ?so what happened in your last marriage? questioning. At one point, Affleck just volunteered the stuff about ?there?s no scandal, no soap opera.? Anyway, I don?t believe him. I think there was a soap opera and there was a lot of drama behind the scenes. I think J.Lo spent months trying to figure out why Ben just up and decided one day that he no longer wanted to be married to her. But hey, he?s in his 50s now, he can?t blame her for everything (like he did the first time) and complain about her fame (like he did the first time).

Pedro Pascal drinks 6 shots of espresso: you get really high and answer emails
We just saw Pedro Pascal and Jennifer Aniston out to dinner together, and I agree in thinking there?s zero going on romantically between the two. Aside from the fact they were part of a larger group of friends, I just don?t see those two as an item. And I?m not just saying that as a longtime swooning admirer of Pedro?s. (I?m not!) If anything, the biggest love vibe I get from Pedro is with his career. Not in an egotistical way, but the genuine love and deep gratitude of an actor who kept showing up for years until something (Game of Thrones) finally broke his way. He works so much now it?s amazing we?re not sick of him. (Im not!) Next up for Pedro is season two of The Last of Us, which begins April 13 on HBO. Pedro just appeared on Jimmy Kimmel to promote the show (wearing a t-shirt that said ?Adult Content,? the man is out to kill us, I swear) and Jimmy asked about a two-year-old photo of Pedro that outed his go-to Starbucks order: six shots of espresso!

It?s been over two years since Pedro Pascal?s Starbucks coffee order went viral online, and he?s finally speaking out about it.

If you didn?t see, in March of 2023, a video of Pedro holding his Starbucks drink drew a ton of comments, because the sticker on the plastic cup revealed exactly what he ordered.

He was drinking an iced quad espresso in a venti cup with extra ice and six shots.

At the time, fans figured out that he was likely consuming around 384 mg of caffeine with this drink, at around 64 mg per shot.

Now, he?s speaking out about his morning brew.

On Jimmy Kimmel Live, Pedro said of his coffee order going viral, ?I cannot begin to tell you how violating this was!?

?There?s so much context to why it has become six shots of espresso. It was always a quad but then I feel like the cups got bigger and, I don?t know, the shots got less strong. At some point, it became six,? he said. ?It was an incredibly private morning ritual that I never wanted anyone to know about.?

?You sip it and you get really high, and you answer emails and stuff,? he added, noting that he doesn?t drink any additional coffee besides this drink.

[From Just Jared]

Holy heart rate, Mister Fantastic! No really, have Pedro?s doctors weighed in on his daily caffeine consumption? Because it?s nearly the same amount as Dakota Johnson was unwittingly imbibing when she was downing two energy drinks a day (and then not sleeping at night). I?m not judging, I just care! This daily habit doesn?t sound sustainable, which in itself is incompatible with my need to have Pedro around for a very long life. I will say, though, the context of his super-charged caffeine high does add a new element to Pedro?s ?psycho? (his word, not mine) technique for learning lines. Last year Pedro revealed he writes out the first letter of each word of his dialogue, resulting in handwritten notes that look like a copycat Zodiac Killer in training (my words, not his). Now I?m picturing Pedro sitting at the Starbucks, sipping his iced hypertension-in-a-cup, and setting to work on his coded scripts, possibly/probably freaking out staff and other onlookers in the process.

Anyway, I?m sorry Pedro felt violated during his deeply private ritual? at a Starbucks. So here?s a tip from one iced coffee drinker ? no espresso at all for me; cream & sweetener ? to another: I always peel the order-identifying sticker off the cup first thing, before I even take a sip. (What, me paranoid?)

Brian Tyree Henry & Elizabeth Olsen are obsessed with 'With Love, Meghan'
In 2023, Brian Tyree Henry got an Oscar nomination for his role in Causeway. He knew that the nomination was the win, and he used that entire awards-season run to take his career to the next level. He?s stayed moisturized, booked and busy ever since, and he?s currently promoting AppleTV?s Dope Thief. Which is why he appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show this week. At one point in the interview, he was asked about the film he?s currently working on, Panic Carefully, with Julia Roberts, Eddie Redmayne and Elizabeth Olsen. Apparently, Brian and Elizabeth (he calls her Lizzie) hit it off right away and they immediately became besties. They bonded over their shared taste in lifestyle shows, apparently. So all this month, they?ve been obsessively watching With Love, Meghan, and Brian excitedly told Kelly all about it:

I like that he describes WLM as ?the new Meghan Markle-slash-Meghan, Duchess of Sussex show where she?s also, like, Martha Stewart.? That should absolutely be the tagline. Brian says that he and Lizzie were like ?we need to get in the flower sprinkles game? and Lizzie figured out a way to make flower sprinkles, and that was part of her wrap gift to Brian. He also says ?Meghan is bomb with calligraphy? and so Lizzie also had her husband do the calligraphy for his note. Hilariously, he said that he and Lizzie are trying to get on With Love, Meghan. But? but? I thought the show was a flop?? I thought it was poorly reviewed! I thought everyone was hate-watching it?? Yeah it was always going to be a sweet, gentle lifestyle show and I think it?s so cool that an Oscar-nominated actor is using his talk-show time to discuss his newfound obsession with flower sprinkles and calligraphy. I hope Meghan invites him and Elizabeth Olsen on WLM!

Ralph Macchio 'has had conversations' about a My Cousin Vinny reboot
Ralph Macchio has has a career resurgence recently after living a quiet life on Long Island and doing guest appearance. In 2018, he made a comeback with the series Cobra Kai, which is a sequel to the Karate Kid movies. This spring, hes appearing in Karate Kid: Legends, which is set in the Miyagi-verse and takes place three years after the events of Cobra Kai. Ralph was at PaleyFest when someone brought up the idea of rebooting another one of his most famous movies, My Cousin Vinny. According to Ralph, he actually has had ?conversations? with some writers about a sequel.

Yeah, that ones a beloved piece,? he added of the film. ?Its about finding the smart angle in.?

Macchio acknowledged that Pesci, 82, would have to be involved in some way ? even if it?s a smaller role than he had in the original movie.

He could FaceTime it in here,? he suggested

My Cousin Vinny follows the perpetually anxious Vinny (Pesci), a big-city lawyer who has never won a case, as he helps Bill (Macchio) and his friend Stan (Mitchell Whitfield) out of a tough spot after they are accused of murder in a small Alabama town.

The endlessly quotable flick also stars Marisa Tomei, whose portrayal of Vinnys fiance Mona Lisa Vito earned her Best Supporting Actress at the 1993 Oscars.

[From People]

I have such mixed feelings about this! My Cousin Vinny is one of my all-time favorite movies. I wrote two different term papers about it in college (I am not ashamed to admit this!) and can quote it all day long. I think if they did a reboot, it would only make sense if it was a series and Bill has now become a lawyer, inspired by what happened to him. Ugh, but still! Marissa Tomei and Joe Pesci?s dynamic in that movie is what makes it so freaking good. There would be no point without the two of them as major players.

I?m okay with reboots to properties like Practical Magic and The Princess Diaries because there?s source material to pull from. Something like My Cousin Vinny was lightning in a bottle. You gotta just leave it as is. The movies biological clock has stopped ticking! However, this is 2025, and were still solidly in Hollywood?s Age of Reboot, so a MCV sequel is probably inevitable at this point. If it?s going to happen, then I hope that they at least do right by it.

Gwyneth Paltrow & Duchess Meghan have officially quashed their beef
At a fundamental level, I believed Gwyneth Paltrow absolutely knew what she was doing re: the Duchess of Sussex. Gwyneth is an ageing Mean Girl, one of the OG nepo babies, used to being That Girl in every elite space. The way she described the Duchess of Sussex?s lifestyle show and brand as an ?attempt? in Vanity Fair was done on purpose. Tracy Anderson filming a video for Goop and saying she was filming in her ?actual kitchen? was done on purpose. The timing and music for Gwyneth?s ?boyfriend breakfast? IG video was done on purpose. All three of those things together show a clear pattern, right? But I guess Gwyneth had second thoughts, or maybe she?s softened a bit, because she decided to end all of the ?Gwyneth is beefing with Meghan? stories.
