I?ve been putting off writing anything about Bono?s inaugural column in The New York Times on Sunday. It?s not that the piece wasn?t funny, or that I?m lazy, it?s just that Bono is so friggin? insane, I don?t even know where to start with it. First, some back story: The NYT apparently has some problems hiring columnists who aren?t A) insane and B) liars. So when neoconservative Bill Kristol?s year-long contract came up, the NYT?s editors decided to do this revolving door of several columnists, all to fill Kristol?s old space. Yeah, they might want to rethink that.
Okay, now to Bono?s insanity. First, Bono does this faux-Kerouac rambling thing, and then I think he?s having a conversation with himself (?). Then, there?s all of the gratuitous name-checking. Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis. Nina Simone. Bob Dylan. All mentioned by Bono - see, because if he names them, he absorbs their energy, right? Like, Palm Springs, MAN. Like, do you even remember Sinatra in Palm Springs when Bono was in Dublin drinking a pint with Nina Simone and Miles Davis and it was heavy? Had enough? I?m going to try to edit down the ?highlights? of the column, but if you want to read the whole thing, try this to blow your mind.
I?m in a crush in a Dublin pub around New Year?s. Glasses clinking clicking, clashing crashing in Gaelic revelry: swinging doors, sweethearts falling in and out of the season?s blessings, family feuds subsumed or resumed. Malt joy and ginger despair are all in the queue to be served on this, the quarter-of-a-millennium mark since Arthur Guinness first put velvety blackness in a pint glass.
Interesting mood. The new Irish money has been gambled and lost; the Celtic Tiger?s tail is between its legs as builders and bankers laugh uneasy and hard at the last year, and swallow uneasy and hard at the new. There?s a voice on the speakers that wakes everyone out of the moment: it?s Frank Sinatra singing ?My Way.? His ode to defiance is four decades old this year and everyone sings along for a lifetime of reasons. I am struck by the one quality his voice lacks: Sentimentality.
A call to believability.
A voice that says, ?Don?t lie to me now.?
That says, ?Baby, if there?s someone else, tell me now.?
Fabulous, not fabulist. Honesty to hang your hat on.
…As the year rolls over (and with it many carousers), the emotion in the room tussles between hope and fear, expectation and trepidation. Wherever you end up, his voice takes you by the hand.
…We had spent some time in his house in Palm Springs, which was a thrill ? looking out onto the desert and hills, no gingham for miles. Plenty of miles, though, Miles Davis. …Like Bob Dylan?s, Nina Simone?s, Pavarotti?s, Sinatra?s voice is improved by age, by years spent fermenting in cracked and whiskeyed oak barrels. As a communicator, hitting the notes is only part of the story, of course.
…To what end? Duality, complexity. I was lucky to duet with a man who understood duality, who had the talent to hear two opposing ideas in a single song, and the wisdom to know which side to reveal at which moment.
This is our moment. What do we hear?

Here?s the thing - I really Jack Kerouac and that whole stream-of-consciousness style of writing, if it?s done well. When Kerouac did it, it was innovative, dramatic and powerful. When Bono does it… well, it?s just sad and pretentious. I?m not Bono?s biggest fan, but I admire much of the work he does in Africa, and I really hope that the NYT editors force him to write his next column about something important, like AIDS or debt. No more of this rambling about Sinatra. Please.

Celebrities think they can do whatever they want because they’re big stars. This includes getting into 21 and over clubs even though their ID says they’re 19. LA lets them get away with this because celebrities are revered as gods there and the laws binding regular citizens don’t apply to them. They could drown kittens in their sinks and the most they would get is a stern lecture about not doing it in public restrooms. Luckily, this doesn’t hold true in Suffern, NY.
TMZ reports that Hayden Panettiere was in a 21+ club there before Christmas checking out the John Turco Band when a security guard asked for her ID. He found out she was only 19, had no idea she played the insufferable and annoying Claire on Heroes and kicked her ass out. Not only that, he confiscated her ID.
Hayden then did what any celebrity would do. She threw a hissy fit and called the cops on herself to get her ID back. The cops eventually came and returned it.
If I were the bouncer, I’d cut up her card right in front of her. Even if it wasn’t a fake. Then I’d throw the pieces in the air and tell her to GTFO making sure I sprayed spittle on her face as I berated her. And I’d spank her ass and tell her to “Get along now, lil’ missy.” I’m tough, but fair.

Britney Spears has finally moved out of her cursed, jinxed, and evil $7.9 million shanty home and into a new ostentatious $9 million place she?s rented in the Calabasas area of L.A. It?s been rumored for a while that Brit wanted to get out of her old house, which was the site of most of her mental breakdowns last year. Of course the other reason she wanted to move was because a psychic told her it was cursed, but that?s neither here nor there. Luckily Brit won?t be slumming it in some haunted house anymore, thanks to her new place?s rose garden, elevators, and two-storey octagon library tower. You know, for that giant collection of first editions she has.
The over-the-top House Of Dreams features every conceivable luxury. The custom designed estate features more than 10,000 square feet of living space for Britney to relax. The gardens will give her young sons more than an acre to run around in as they play in the rose garden and swim in the glass mosaic pool. All the interiors are built from the finest limestone, marble, walnut hardwood parquet and plank flooring, imported European stone mosaics and limestone fireplaces.
The master bedroom includes a separate large designer dressing room including garment, shoe and bag storage. And Britney can prepare for her day in a custom bathroom suite with a dry sauna, steam shower and bath that extends onto a balcony spanning across the rear elevation of the estate. Her cars cans be stored below ground in a garage with two auto lifts.
And if that isn’t enough Britney can spend time in the craft room, mud room, maid?s quarters or three other bedroom suites.

Thank goodness. The thought of Britney Spears being without a car lift terrifies me to my very soul. And this is just her temporary abode. Brit?s building a new home in the same area, but obviously couldn?t stay in the cursed house while it was being built. So this is just to tide her over. In related Britney news, her dad has apparently had a falling out with OK! Magazine. OK used to be one of the Spears? main sources of income ? the family always gave them the exclusives. But no more.
THE tabloid gravy train for the family of Britney Spears has derailed now that Kent Brownridge is publishing the American version of OK! magazine. Brownridge, a veteran of Rolling Stone, tightened OK!’s purse strings and severed the magazine’s relationship with the Spears clan. Before his arrival, the Spears family sold OK! exclusives on everything from Jamie Lynn’s pregnancy to Britney’s first photo shoot with her kids. Now patriarch Jamie Spears refuses to work with OK!, and the mag bans its staff from Spears events. A rep for OK! denied any schism: “We always follow the Spears - in fact, Britney is on our current cover, and we’ll continue running stories about them. We need them, and they need us, and we both know it.”

An OK! rep told The Scoop, ?We would absolutely cover (Britney and Jamie-Lynn) (and pay Jamie for the privilege of doing so!) when something newsworthy presents itself.? It sounds like maybe what they?re actually saying is they?re not willing to do so many vanity pieces on Britney and Jamie-Lynn anymore, with the emphasis on ?newsworthy.? All of us check out celebrities online, but I constantly wonder if celebrities check out themselves or their friends/partners/hook-ups online. As we saw with John Mayer?s rants and most recently with Tina Fey?s Golden Globe acceptance speech, some celebrities do check up on the blogs and gossip sites. Jenny McCarthy is adding her name to the list. She admits to OK! that she reads up on her life partner on the internet, and they even check in with each other via webcam.
In his latest comedy Yes Man, Jim Carrey must say “yes” to every opportunity that comes across his path. In real life, the comedian, 47, has already said yes to a lifetime of love with girlfriend Jenny McCarthy, 36. While these two are happily content to stay unmarried, McCarthy tells OK! that Jim is truly the love of her life and credits him with helping her son, Evan, (who was diagnosed with Austism at 2) get better.
“Jim is a natural therapist,” she explains. “Evan had a lot of anxiety issues, and Jim would soothe his fears by letting him know that it was safe to try something new.”
The party of three seem pretty tight. So what do they do when Jim is away making movies? According to Jenny, she and her funnyman pick up right where they left off at home!
“We text about four times a day. And we talk about three times,” she reveals to OK!. “I go online and check him out. I tell him his outfit looks cute!”
Jenny says she and Jim also use a web cam from time to time!
“I haven’t done any dancing, but I make him do that!” she says. “It’s nice! With the iChat, we’re always afraid that there’s a third party watching! We’re a little bit careful, but it’s a great way to have that face connection!”
You’d think with two comedians in the house, life would be non-stop laughter, but Jenny says she and Jim are much more serious than people think.
“It’s not that we are that funny ? like ‘ha, ha, ha,’ when we are with each other” she explains. “I think that’s because we have to do that so often ? Jim now more than me. I’m a little more serious now with my work. We talk about real issues.”

I wonder if they have cybersex. Is it still called that? I have no idea. I would imagine Jim and Jenny probably just chat with no clothing removed. And I totally get how Jim Carrey might be more serious than ?people think?. He?s always seemed like one of the more morose celebrities in his private life, and I bet Jenny does a good job of lightening him up.

Naomi Watts ? already gorgeous and thus carrying some obviously great genes ? has already lost the vast majority of her pregnancy weight, just a month after giving birth to son Samuel Kai Schreiber. Naomi looked absolutely glowing last night at the New York premiere of boyfriend Liev Schreiber’s film ?Defiance.? Celebs just seem to be able to bounce back from pregnancy much quicker than the rest of us.
New moms, eat your hearts out. On Monday ? only two days shy of a month after giving birth to her second child ? Naomi Watts was close to having back her pre-baby figure, as evidenced at the Cinema Society and Nextbook.org-sponsored New York premiere of her partner Liev Schreiber’s World War II drama Defiance.
How did she manage to drop the baby weight so quickly? “I’m breast feeding,” Watts, 40, told PEOPLE about her routine with Samuel Kai Schreiber. “And he’s sucking it all out of me, it seems. And when the baby comes out, it’s a lot of weight right there.”
A couple since 2005, Watts, 40, and Schreiber, 41, also have another son, Alexander Pete Schreiber, born in July 2007.
“They’re very different,” Watts said of her two boys. “[Sammy]’s more fragile, in a way. But I don’t know, maybe I’ve forgotten how small they are. [Alexander] is only 18 months old.
“And I’ve also got this big baby right here,” she said, pointing to Schreiber at her side on the red carpet.

Not everyone is as lucky as Naomi and able to lose baby weight by breastfeeding. In April Salma Hayek told Oprah that she didn?t lose weight due to it, and had to work hard at diet and nutrition.
A lot of people make is sound like all you have to do is breastfeed and the weight will just fall off. I remember some episode of ?Desperate Housewives? where a character said it was like doing an hour of cardio. Not that anyone should ever rely on that show for health advice. It was a nice idea, but it definitely seems to be untrue for most women. Naomi must be one of the very lucky few if that?s what?s responsible for most of her weight loss. She?s probably eating well too, and no matter what she looks absolutely stunning.

TMZ says Law & Order: SVU cast member, Mariska Hargitay’s, lung has partially collapsed for the second time in the past few months. The first time was over the holidays. The second time came today. The cause is currently unknown.
Mariska’s rep says she has pneumothorax, a condition that occurs after a chest injury. Hargitay is not expected to miss any work and “will appear in all episodes for the rest of the season.”
Thank god. Because if I miss just one episode of my loosely fictionalized crime dramas, I just don’t know what I’d do. Probably curl up into a ball and die.

Reports of Deal or No Deal host, Howie Mandel, having a heart attack were greatly exaggerated, says Howie’s rep. Howie was simply was hospitalized for an irregular heartbeat.
Currently in the hospital, Mandel is expected to be released on Tuesday to go back to work. The 53-year-old was shooting his new show Howie Do It when doctors found out.
It’s somewhat known that Howie Mandel has a fear of germs. You’ll never see him shake hands on Deal or No Deal, although he has no problem hugging and touching. So that’s probably what someone did to him to make his heart skip a beat. That or punched him right in the chest. They probably misunderstood Howie when he asked for a “pound.”

Perhaps she was feeling so insecure because her long-time boyfriend, Beverly Hills 90210 (classic, not new) alum Brian Austin Green wasn?t there to hold her hand.
Megan Fox is probably one of young Hollywood’s most beautiful actresses–and yet she’s the only one who doesn’t seem to know it.
“I’m a tranny. I’m a man,” Fox joked to E!’s Giulianna Rancic on the red carpet of Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards. “I’m painfully insecure, like I’m on the verge of vomiting right now, I’m so horrified that I’m here, and embarrassed, I’m scared.”
The Transformers star didn’t stop there! Fox, 22, kept watching the monitor on the red carpet and admired more than a few of her favorite actresses.
“I love that you’re looking at Salma Hayek,” Rancic told the actress, who replied, “I want her boobs! Those are the most amazing boobs. Perfect.”
Noticeably absent from Fox’s side was her long time beau, Brian Austin Green.
“He doesn’t want to be here,” she explained. “You know, he doesn’t want to be my date. He’s a man. He has an ego.”
This was Megan’s first trip to the Golden Globes and, when asked about her diet regime in preparation for the big night, she held nothing back.
“Well, I do have a 22 inch waist, I will say that. But, I basically starve myself for a month. I’m kidding, I did a lot of pilates. An immense amount of pilates.”

Tom Cruise is kind of growing on me. I know he’s an unofficial leader and an apologist for Scientology, one of the world’s most dangerous cults, and for that reason I’ll never be a fan. At the same time the guy is very gracious with the public and he seems real about it. I was kind of impressed by him at the Golden Globes, especially the way he listened attentively to his old boss Steven Spielberg’s speech. Maybe he’s trying to convert us all with kindness because he knows he’s the only one who can help. Looking at the header photo, the crazy is still very much with him.
It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on with Tom’s relationship with his “they said it wouldn’t last” third wife, Katie Holmes. Holmes is looking incredibly tired and worn down.
According to Star, which is probably making this up, Katie is disappointed in her husband for not helping her land a decent role though which she can prove she’s star material, and it’s putting a strain on their relationship. Whether that’s the strain that’s showing up on her face or not is up to interpretation:

This might be something that just occurred to someone at Star, but it’s a good observation. Cruise helms United Artists studio and can presumably use his influence to help “Kate” land a role or even create one for her. So far all she’s done since she married Tom was that awful comedy Mad Money, a cameo on the TV show “Eli Stone,” and a role on Broadway that was presumably her idea. IMDB doesn’t have her listed as attached to any projects in the future.
Cruise is rumored to be on shaky ground with United Artists, which is owned by Cruise and MGM. His partner, Paula Wagner, left UA in August of last year amid rumors that MGM wanted the studio to move in another direction. (They put out Lions for Lambs and Valkyrie, which wasn’t released at that point.) What’s more is that United received a $500 million funding pledge from Merrill Lynch, which was thought to have been in jeopardy after the financial crisis and takeover of Lynch by Bank of America in September. Supposedly the money is secure, but that hardly seems possible.
Now that Valkyrie was a success maybe Tom will have more pull with the bigwigs to help “Kate” get some work. That is, if he wants her to work. He kept calling her “strong willed” during press for Valkyrie and said that he wanted 10 children but mentioned that it was up to her. Maybe he’s setting up the right career-free scenario to change her malleable mind. It’s not like she’s earning roles with her fabulous talent anyway. Holmes’ role on stage wrapped on Sunday night and we’ll have to see if she remains in New York or returns to LA with her husband.

So when Ken - who also works with Eva Longoria Parker and Jennifer Lopez - told her to shampoo only two to three times a month, she took his advice. The NY Times had an article about a year ago covering a supposedly new trend to just get a professional wash and blow out once a week and to not wash your hair until the next salon appointment. Blue-haired old ladies aren’t the only ones taking advantage of the convenience of letting someone else do their hair and not bothering with it the rest of the week. Clients use powders and perfumes to keep their hair fresh in between appointments and say that the hair adjusts, producing less oils and suffering less damage from chemicals and processing. Shampoo is just unnecessary, they claim, as it strips the natural oils that we try to put in again with artificial conditioners. It sounds strange, but shampoo is a modern invention and maybe we don’t really need it at all.
I once spent about six months washing my hair every other day on the advice of my hairdresser. I eventually got tired of how it looked on the off days and ended up going back to washing and styling it every day. It saved me some time and I can still go a day without washing my hair, but I have to do anything special I prefer to wash it.
It may be cultural to wash your hair so much and who are we to judge? Simpson’s hair usually looks ok if a little messy. If these details about her grooming habits are true, she’s not as extreme as some people. This British woman claims not to have washed her hair in 11 years.

Unfortunately, the courts offer to provide for additional restraining orders against stalkers “Ronald McDonald,” “Captain D” and “Colonel Sanders” were vehemently rejected by Love-Hewitt’s camp.

Howie Mandel was hospitalized in his hometown of Toronto for an irregular heartbeat and not a heart attack according to The Star.
"Howie is in the hospital being monitored for an irregular heartbeat but doctors expect him to be released and back to work (today)," Kay said in the statement. "He did not have a heart attack."
Mandel suffered chest pains at his hotel around 7p and an ambulance was called to take him to the hospital. He was awake and talking the whole time. Hopefully he will be better soon!

Jennifer Love Hewitt has been granted a restraining order against a 62-year-old man who has been stalking her. Love Hewitt recently ended her engagement to Scottish actor Ross McCall, and may be feeling more vulnerable now that she doesn’t have someone with her at all times.
Court records show a judge in Burbank, California on Monday granted Hewitt’s request for a three-year restraining order against David Nolte. The actress stated in a court petition that Nolte recently sold his home in Colorado and moved to Los Angeles to be closer to Hewitt.
Documents also include dozens of letters allegedly sent by Nolte, describing violent and sexual fantasies about Hewitt.
The actress wrote that she became more fearful of Nolte after he appeared at her mother’s house in late December. Court records do not indicate whether Nolte has an attorney.

He was always pleasant and chatty enough, but would push to know personal information, and would get angry if I didn?t share because he felt somehow that I owed it to him. While this isn?t exactly stalking, it may feel pretty similar. Except while my stalker just made me feel intimidated and uncomfortable, Jennifer?s was more of the terrifying variety. Law & Order: SVU is a great show that seems to have jumped the shark this season. It happened with an unfortunate episode where Christopher Meloni?s character Elliot Stabler gets shot while tracking someone smuggling exotic animals. Not to put too fine a point on it, but exotic animals are not special victims! Rape victims are special victims. Children are special victims. Leopards are not special victims.
Anyhoo, L&O: SVU?s Emmy-winning star Mariska Hargitay has been hospitalized while on vacation. Apparently, she has a collapsed lung, which sounds pretty serious. Her reps are releasing very little info, though. The only thing they?re sure of is that Hargitay will be back to filming SVU episodes very, very soon.

Mariska Hargitay seems like a really cool person, judging her solely from her E! True Hollywood Story, which made me cry. Her role as Detective Olivia Benson has defined her career, and she takes it seriously. After a couple of years playing a cop dealing with victimized women and children, Hargitay started a charity that funds therapeutic vacations for rape and molestation victims, bringing them to Hawaii to swim with the fish. It?s got me wondering if she was in Hawaii when her lung collapsed. My thoughts and prayers are with Hargitay, her family, and the people she helps.

Britney Spears is about to embark on a “world tour” a little over a year after her public breakdown. Many people have speculated she’s not prepared emotionally or physically for the grueling requirements of touring, and Britney herself has said that she feels trapped and like every day is the same. Now people close to Britney are speaking out against the tour and advising her people to let her rest. A couple of weeks ago there was a story that Britney’s choreographers told her father she’s not ready to tour. Her former music manager Johnny Wright has spoken to OK! Magazine and also says she’s being pushed into it and isn’t ready:
“A comeback is not what I wish for Britney. What I wish for her is to settle down and find real happiness. All her essential relationships have been torn apart. She’s been divorced twice, she doesn’t have custody of her kids, she’s being pushed back into being a money machine.
I want her to be happy in her heart, then go back to the business because she wants to, not because people are convincing her she has to, or that it would be good therapy for her. It’s too soon for her to be a part of a manufactured machine that is pushing her to have to be a success.
It was very telling when I found out Wade and Andre were no longer with the tour. They helped create the best tours we ever had with Britney. Wade is a really good influence and understands her. When I heard he was no longer involved, I knew there was a problem, and it is probably just the beginning of more problems to come.
Britney has to rival Madonna out there, but Madonna really wants to do it. Seeing Britney do it by the numbers isn’t a good sign. It means she might not want it as much as those around her do.
In the beginning, in her mind, she could stop at any time. Now she’s thinking, ‘I’ve got 170 people on payroll, my dad quit his job, my mom relies totally on me and I can’t take a break. I can’t go back to my friends in Kentwood. I can’t step back… that’s tough for an adult, never mind a kid… When a parent becomes an employee of a child, they worry about getting fired, so they stop being parents in order not to get laid off.
Her career can wait. Now it should be about spending time with her kids. That’s where she’ll bring herself back to herself. But she’s gearing up for much more time away from them while on the road.
Even if she’s gone for a month, the growth of those boys during that period is significant. She won’t see that and will really miss that. Those are moments she’s not going to get back.”

I can see what Jeremy is saying about spending time with her kids. Sean Preston and Jayden James haven?t had much of mommy in their lives, and maybe she should just go back to Louisiana and play parent for a while. Of course, an alternative is to bring the kids on tour with her. It?s not like they need to go to school yet.
While Britney might have wanted to return to work, I hope that after her successful comeback she takes some time out. Unlike the rest of us, Britney can afford to take time out for as long as she likes, and following this successful comeback she should be able to take the time away without damaging her career. If these statements are to be believed, Britney is being asked to work very hard and her parents are pressuring her to continue, maybe to her detriment.
Britney upcoming single, If You Seek Amy, is causing some controversy, particularly with radio stations. You can’t censor it easily as she’s not saying ‘F**k Me’ but spelling it out. One radio programmer interviewed by MTV said that it’s not a moral judgment, but ‘It’s about the mom in the minivan with her 8-year-old’. While I don’t like my kids hearing that kind of language, I can explain to them easily that this isn’t nice, it’s adult language and don’t say it! I have a much harder time explaining the adult content of a song.

Thompson recently spoke out about Madonna?s immediate post-separation statement that Guy Ritchie was ?emotionally retarded?.
Actress Emma Thompson felt a rapport with Madonna when the pop superstar publicly referred to her ex-husband Guy Ritchie as “emotionally retarded”, because she thinks the same of her spouse, actor Greg Wise.
The Oscar winner admits she was stunned to hear Madonna’s comments on stage during her Sticky + Sweet world tour last October (08) just days after her separation from director Ritchie was announced.
But Thompson confesses the singer did have a point about many British males. She says, “I felt very badly for British men when she said that. I thought, ‘Well, it’s not across the board, but it is true that an awful lot of them are a bit kind of closed down.’”
And Thompson insists the problem lies with bad parenting.
