Julia Stiles is only 38 years old. The way she doesn?t really ?fit? into so many Hollywood casting decisions, you would think that she was older than that, right? But no she?s not even 40. She?s been working consistently for 20 years, with a break to get her college degree and various breaks when the work simply wasn?t there for her. Nothing really ?happened? to Julia, that?s my point. She was just sort of shuffled off to indie films and character work and TV work (she currently has a starring role on Riviera). Julia knows that her career has been a bit strange too. She?s currently in Hustlers, playing the journalist who interviews all of the strippers after their scam. She chatted with the Daily Beast about her career and Hustlers and how she finally feels like she can make sense of her career:
She campaigned for a role in Hustlers: ?They were like, you might really like this but the part?s not that flashy because you?re not playing a dancerI spoke to [the director] and I was like, I don?t care if I have to sweep the floors. I?ll do anything to be part of this movie.?
She is playing the journalist interviewing the hustlers: ?They could have made five different versions of this story. It could have been Striptease. It could have been Showgirls. It could?ve been a true crime story demonizing these women, focusing on the aftermath of what happened to the men they drugged. But Lorene focuses on the sisterhood and the partnership between these women, trying to get us to understand why these women did what they did.?
Her career at the age of 38: ?If you had talked to me two or three years ago, I might have been more nervous or more frustrated, but I?m really, really happy where I am now? I felt like I was sort of jumping from job to job that I wasn?t really connected to, and worried about where my career was going. I think a few years ago my frustration was feeling like nobody knew what to do with me. You know, I had had some success in my twenties and now I?m in a different place in my life and I didn?t really fit anywhere?But a movie like Hustlers to me is such an affirmation that like I have a place in the film industry and stories that I?m interested in are being told.?
On 10 Things I Hate About You?s 20th anniversary: ?I don?t take it for granted that people are talking about the movie 20 years later. It?s an affirmation that even back then the things, the stories, and the roles that I was drawn to, other people were interested in as well. That was the first time I really read a female character, especially as a teenager, who was feisty and opinionated and unapologetic.?
Going to Columbia University just when her career was heating up: ?It happened to me before I could really understand what was going on,? she says. Going to college helped her keep her head on straight. ?Academic professionals don?t really give a sh-t about me being in a movie or having to go the MTV Movie Awards. But then also people in the entertainment industry don?t really care about university. That helped me a lot.?

As I read this, it sort of struck me that we?re always talking about ?second chances? and ?who gets to come back? after scandal or crime or harassment. And Julia didn?t do anything to anybody, she did nothing wrong at all, she just? had, like, a decade in the career wilderness because directors didnt know what to do with her. She?s a talented actress she always was. But I totally get how she felt like she didn?t ?fit? anywhere. Anyway, I?m glad she?s ?back? (again, she never left!) and I?m excited to see Hustlers!

In July, Lake Bell visited her Bless This Mess costar Dax Shepards podcast, Armchair Expert. She talked about the homebirths of her two children, Nova, four, and Ozgood, two. Both of her children were born with the umbilical cord wrapped around their necks and they werent breathing. In Novas case, it took three lifesaving breaths from the midwife to help her start breathing on her own, while it took more time for Ozgood to start breathing. He spent 11 days in the NICU, but recovered well and is thriving now. Lake mentioned to Dax that she took antidepressants for a year-and-a-half after his birth. In a new episode of Amanda de Cadenets podcast, The Conversation, Lake talked more about living with depression after her sons birth:

My heart aches for those who feel that through the hardship of their life every day, like, I have felt it, the actress, 40, admitted on the Wednesday, September 11, episode of The Conversation With Amanda de Cadenet podcast. I know what it is and it?s a monster. It?s a demon.
The Bless This Mess star even began taking medication despite her holistic ? kumbaya, new age views against it. I was like, I need something, I can?t be a person, she explained. I don?t know how to be. I had a little daughter too so I was like, I gotta be a person and I don?t know how to find that!?
Bell was prescribed a low [dose] of Zoloft ? and she felt a difference. It took me to a place where I could be. I could just be, she told Amanda de Cadenet, 47, on Wednesday. It was rational. I needed to just be Lake and I felt, finally like, I could breathe the air that Lake breath[e]s, not like some other person that I don?t recognize.

I am so glad that both Ozgood and Nova are doing well now. I cant imagine how harrowing that experience was for Lake and her husband, Scott. Im also happy to hear that when Lake reached a point that she thought medication might help her feel more like herself, more balanced, and able to function, she saw a doctor. She could have very easily continued to put that off. The baby blues are common after giving birth, and postpartum depression is a concern, too. In Lakes circumstances, of course, the minutes after her sons birth were terrifying, so Im not surprised to learn that she realized that her mental wellbeing was affected. According to a survey reported in Motherly, more than half of new moms arent getting the mental health support they need.
Its so important to talk about depression and other mental health conditions, period, and Im glad that Lake is sharing her very personal experiences of depression after giving birth to help normalize that conversation (even as everyones journey toward well being is different). I also like thinking about Lakes comments alongside those of Lizzo and Dove Camerons about living with depression, and Ashley Graham and Porsha Williams stories and photos both pre- and post-giving birth. That is, collectively, all of their honest stories (and those of others) can help us have better, smarter and more compassionate conversations around health and wellness.

I?ve never thought of myself as particularly high-maintenance, but more than one man has referred to me as a ?City Girl.? At first I thought ?but I didn?t even grow up in a city??? But finally I understood: I don?t think enjoying electricity, air conditioning, phones that work and real bathrooms makes someone a high-maintenance City Girl, but to many people, thats exactly what it means. I?m not a fan of ?camping? or ?roughing it.? Does that make me a high-maintenance City Girl? Or does it just mean that I don?t enjoy peeing in the woods?
Well, Kim Kardashian is like me she?s a City Girl. She likes bathrooms and electricity and AC. Well, Kanye West recently bought a cabin in the woods of Wyoming. Kanye has spent a lot of time in Wyoming over the past several years I believe the quiet, lowkey lifestyle is probably better for his mental health. He works there, and he invites collaborators to come to Wyoming and work for a week and along the way, Wyoming has become something of a celebrity hotspot. I thought Kanye already owned a place in Wyoming, but apparently this cabin in the woods is something new he purchased a parcel of land of about 1500 acres. Really! And Kim was freaking out about it, as she told Jimmy Fallon this week:
Kim says that it?s Kanye?s ?vision? for the family to eventually move to Wyoming, into this ranch/cabin he just bought. Kim isn?t into the whole ?moving there permanently? thing, but she is open to spending summers there. But not in the cabin Kanye bought, because it has no plumbing and no electricity. City Girl! And if Kim?s story wasn?t enough, Team Kim basically went to People Magazine to reiterate the point: Kim is not fking moving to a cabin in the woods:
Kanye West recently bought a sprawling ranch in Wyoming for his family, but a source tells PEOPLE that the SKIMS shapewear designer has no plans to relocate to the Cowboy State.
?Kim is definitely not moving and living full-time in Wyoming right now. Kim likes visiting Wyoming, but she sees it more like a vacation place,? the source explains. ?It?s very quiet and private.? The source notes the Kardashian West isn?t a fan of the rustic living conditions. ?Every time they go, they enjoy it. But they are usually comfortable in luxury housing,? the source says. ?The ranch only has simple housing. It?s mostly cabins with no amenities at all. Kim just isn?t a fan of the cabins. There are many things that need to happen before she and the kids can spend more time there. Kim has a whole list of things. They would need to build a house so everyone can be comfortable. And now, when everyone knows Kanye bought the ranch, there needs to be an elaborate security system put in.?
While the ranch is updated and remodeled to Kardashian West?s standards, she?s more than happy to stay in Los Angeles with the rest of her famous family.
?Kim much prefers to live in L.A. full-time,? the source says. ?The kids are in private school in L.A. and are happy. Kim wants them to continue to go to school in L.A. and to be around their cousins as much as possible.?

Yeah, I remember when Kanye was all ?I?m moving back to Chicago!? and Kim was like ?Go ahead, I?m staying in Calabasas.? Kanye eventually lost interest. Kim probably thinks that if she puts up enough resistance, he?ll lose interest in this Ranch Life Dream. While I know Kim is super-high maintenance, I totally agree with her: if Kanye can drop $14 million on all that acreage, he can spend some money building the vacation ranch of Kim?s dreams, something appropriate for a City Girl and four small children. Anyway, I think it?s funny that Kim is basically fighting with Kanye about his ranch life dreams? in People Magazine.

So far, there doesn?t seem to be one big stand-out story from the current New York Fashion Week. Maybe people are saving all the biggest dramas for Paris Fashion Week. That actually wouldn?t surprise me at all. While the Hadids have been doing the NYFW runways, another nepotism model has not: Kendall Jenner decided to sit out every runway for NYFW shows. She?s still going to shows and showing up at some NYFW events. But she?s not working. She chatted with Vogue about how she?s not doing the NYFW runways:
Kendall Jenner is ready to tackle fashion month. Yesterday, she kicked off her New York leg of the tour by sitting front row at Longchamp next to the likes of Julianne Moore. For the occasion, Jenner wore a sporty, long-sleeved dress that was fresh from the Spring 2020 collection. Her thoughts on the show? ?I loved it, I think it was one of my favorites,? says Jenner, who is a face of the brand. ?It was really cool, chic, and bright?it had a happy energy to it.?
As a model, Jenner is no stranger to the gruelling New York?London-Milan-Paris schedule that will soon follow this week?but she can?t deny that there?s still a special energy when shows come to the Big Apple. ?I love New York,? she said. ?All the Fashion Weeks, everyone gathers together for each one, but for this one specifically, it?s those people and then some. It?s so fun, and everybody is ready to have a good time.?
This season, Jenner is switching things up, hitting New York as a showgoer, not a catwalk star. ?It?s a lot more mellow to just go,? she says, ?but I won?t lie, today I was missing it. I was watching the girls and I was like, ?Damn, I kind of want to walk.?? The model then teased that she will be in Milan?perhaps to hit the runway there??and ?TBD on everything else.?

On one side? she doesn?t have to walk a runway if she doesn?t want to, and some other model would probably love that gig. On the other side? Kendall just seems really lazy, right? She?s doing the bare minimum she?ll show up for a handful of NYFW events (but only if she?s getting paid) and she refuses to walk the runway?
About a year ago, Kendall got in trouble because she seemingly mocked working models for walking in as many runway shows as they could book. It was a very elitist thing from Kendall, but unsurprising all the same. Kendall ended up ?taking off? almost every fall runway show in New York, Paris and Milan in Fall 2018. Considering she can pick and choose, and considering she probably makes more money from editorial work and sponsorships, I guess she?s choosing wisely. Or will this come back to bite her? What?s weird is that I always thought she was a better runway model than an editorial model.

Rihanna had a busy New York Fashion Week her Fenty X Savage show was considered one of the best shows of NYFW, and then she always throws her Diamond Ball during fashion week to raise money for charity (it benefits the Clara Lionel Foundation, named after her grandparents). While Rihanna?s Givenchy couture gown isn?t my jam, she looks amazing, as always. She also looks? busty? And like she?s possibly pregnant? That?s what Rihanna?s Army thinks: they are completely convinced that Rihanna is pregnant, and as I write this, ?Rihanna IS PREGNANT? is trending on Twitter:
