Emma Thompson: 'Romantic love is a myth and quite dangerous'
Emma Thompson did some Oscar-campaigning in recent months for her indie film, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. She ended up getting nominated for a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and a bunch of critics awards for her performance, but she didn?t get the Oscar nomination. And I think she?s fine with it for years now, she?s been anti-Hollywood and anti-awards season, or perhaps she?s just very, very British. In any case, Emma spoke to the Radio Times podcast about the Oscars and about whether she believes in ?romantic love.? Some highlights:

Romantic love is a myth: ?Its philosophically helpful and uplifting to remember that romantic love is a myth and quite dangerous. We really do have to take it with a massive pinch of salt. To think sensibly about love and the way it can grow is essential. Long-term relationships are hugely difficult and complicated. If anyone thinks that happy ever after has a place in our lives, forget it.?

She felt ill every time she?s gone to the Oscars: ?Both times I had to do the Oscars I got ill, quite seriously ill, before and during it. I just found the pressure of it and glare of it too much ? It?s sort of astonishing ? and then you think you want to lie down in a dark room. You think, ?Please don?t ask me any questions or make me talk about myself.? It?s horrible. I quite quickly developed a sort of allergy to that, but it?s sort of part of the job.?

On fame: ?Fame doesn?t happen overnight, it?s gradual. I?m lucky from that point of view; I think it must be awful if you have to deal with being James Bond, or one of those people who really can?t go anywhere. To lose your anonymity completely ? it?s not very pleasant for you or the people around you. If that?s what you want, to be recognised, then I suppose you can deal with it, and it?s not so intrusive. But it?s not what I wanted, and I think it?s a highly toxic condition.?

[From The Daily Mail and The Guardian]

I don?t think romantic love is a ?myth,? but I agree that you need more than romantic love or sexual chemistry to make a marriage or partnership work long-term. That?s basically what she?s saying you need to do the work and you can?t expect ?romantic love? to be enough to sustain a relationship. But romantic love isn?t a myth! As for the stuff about the Oscars? I?ve never really understood why so many British actors are so anti-Oscars or anti-Hollywood in general. They pride themselves on ?keeping it real? and being authentic? and then they cozy up to the Windsors. Emma does that. She?s anti-Hollywood-fakery and then she cozies up to King Charles and the rest of them.

Emma Thompson: 'You don't have to have babies to be a complete woman'
Good Luck to You, Leo Grande was released on Hulu here in the US. It?s a small, indie drama starring Emma Thompson as a retired teacher who wants some adventure, so she hires a sex worker so she can have some experiences she?s never had. There was apparently some back-and-forth about whether a film released on Hulu would be eligible for Academy consideration. The ruling came down recently that Leo Grande qualifies, so now Emma is part of an Oscar campaign for her performance. She spoke to Vanity Fair?s Little Gold Men podcast about the film, the industry, streaming and a lot more. Some highlights:

Watching herself perform on screen, naked: ?I would say that the most vulnerable I felt was in Berlin at the film festival in this massive cinema. It was a bloody football field?I mean, huge wraparound room, where we were pretty large on screen. When they told me that it was going to stream [on Hulu], I thought?in a way, in America, there?s more puritanism about sex and sexual pleasure even than there is here. And there?s a lot here. I thought maybe it?s easier for people to see it in their homes.

What she thinks about indie movies going on streaming: ?It reminds me of a little bit of all the debate that came around when video started. I?m old enough to remember that, you see. Everyone said, ?It?s going to kill cinema.? Didn?t kill cinema. ?Cinema?s going to kill theater.? Didn?t kill theater. ?COVID?s going to kill theater.? Everyone?s gone back to the theater. We all get into a bit of a panic. And I?m old enough to remember all of those panics and to know that actually in the end, really great stories do find their way out a lot of the time. I?m not underplaying the fact that I?ll find something and suddenly go, ?God, why didn?t I see this at the time?? Everything?s under the huge tsunami of massive movies. If at the Cannes Film Festival you?ve got literally got fighter jets going over for Top Gun: Maverick, I go, look, if we?re not going to be supported by independent movie film festivals, then that?s something that?s got to be taken responsibility for.

The film made her recognize ?the waste of time? of not accepting one?s body. ?You can?t unlearn it because it?s brainwashing. I?ve been brainwashed since I was very young and the brainwashing continues. I think it?s worse actually now because it?s continued on social media. So instead of people saying, ?We are now going to inhabit the world in our real selves, in our real forms,? people are taking their forms and photoshopping them themselves. Everything that I was brought up with, which only happened in magazines, is now happening to people on people?s phones. This notion of the ideal and the perfect, industrialized, banal and tedious though it is, has been made even more of a thing. And thus we?re looking at kids as young as eight saying, ?I don?t like my thighs. I don?t like this.? Anorexia?s hugely on the rise. It?s something that I?ve fought against all my life, but I can?t fill in those runnels. I just can?t do it. But I can try to be the change. At least I can be honest. And at least I can say, ?Look, I accept this now.? I accept my body. I don?t have to love it, but I accept it.

On Maggie Gyllenhaal & seeing an early cut of ?The Lost Daughter?: ?Her presentation of the hell and the torment of motherhood, if it?s not what actually you want to do, was brilliant?[Maggie & I] been mates for a long time and have talked about all of this for a very long time. And actually, one of the things that should be, and I think is becoming part of a mainstream conversation, is that you don?t have to have babies to be a complete woman. You just don?t have to do it. And I think there?s still a huge taboo about that?huge. You become a mother and you realize that everything?s your fault because everything?s the mother?s fault, everything. In popular psychology, that?s changing a bit, but certainly when psychology began, that was everything. It was all written by men, and it was all very bad science. All of this stuff has to be unpacked, taken apart and redefined, re-explored. And all of these movies that we?re talking about are doing that.

Stories we need to stop telling: ?There are certain stories we really do have to stop telling because I think they?re quite damaging. One is, ?And they lived happily ever after.? That?s just bullsh-t?.The other story that we really need to stop telling is about one man saving the world. This is just a very, very dull story, and it has to stop. I?m so bored. When I talk to my brilliant producer friend, Lindsay Doran, she does a talk about the female hero and what writers are told. They?re told the most extraordinary things now?today they?re told, ?Well, she can?t cry. She can?t cry because that?s showing feminine weakness. She?s got to be badass.? All the female tropes now have to be like the men. You go, ?Hang on a second. It?s the same story. We have to go into the in-between bit and say, ?But what is this that we?re representing?? We are just saying the same thing again and again.

[From Vanity Fair]

?You don?t have to have babies to be a complete woman. You just don?t have to do it. And I think there?s still a huge taboo about that?huge?? She?s right. Childfree women are still considered oddities, or the exception to the rule. Mothers reinforce it too, when they talk about how having a baby makes them feel ?complete? or ?whole.? This made me stop and think too: ?in America, there?s more puritanism about sex and sexual pleasure even than there is here. And there?s a lot here.? I assume she means the UK and perhaps the British-American strains of Puritanism. I get that. But British tabloids still put topless photos in every issue, right?

Emma Thompson: 'I don't think anyone realizes how thin most actresses are'
Emma Thompson is doing press for her film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, which comes out in a couple of weeks. As Kaiser mentioned, the film?s premise is that Emma?s character hires a sex worker to help her have her first orgasm. It will also be the first time Emma has appeared nude in a movie. One might think it took Emma until her 60s to work up the courage to be naked on film, but she said that she wasn?t ever offered the opportunity. According to Emma, she?s been told her whole career that she doesn?t have the right body to disrobe. She said shes been judged harshly her whole career and by her 30s, the press said she?d let herself go. But Emma said she hadn?t given up, she?d just stopped starving herself.

Emma Thompson has experienced her share of body shaming.

The two-time Academy Award winner, 63, recounted male executives telling her she didnt have the right kind of body for sex scenes as she spoke to The Times about her new movie Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.

Ive never really been offered sex scenes, she said. As my mother said, Ive basically played a series of good women. I do cerebral. And I have also never conformed to the shape or look of someone they might want to see naked.

And by they, I mean male executives. Im too mouthy, not pretty enough, not the right kind of body. And, crikey, you are constantly told what kind of body you have, Thompson added.

She also recalled enduring disparaging comments about her body from the media for the better part of her career.

In one interview I did, the male journalist wrote that Id put on a lot of weight since I appeared in Fortunes of War, and that my legs were now like tree trunks, and that Id let myself down, Thompson said. I was 31 and, quite frankly, no longer starving myself. I dont think anyone realises quite how thin most actresses are in real life. They look quite? unreal.

[From People]

We?ve heard these stories about what execs say to women and yet, every time I hear them, I?m shocked. I agree that people don?t know how thin actresses are. Nor do they know the measures they have to go to stay that way. It?s not that actresses come off as frail or brittle in person, but their figure has to have no bad angles. My heart hurts thinking about the demands made on these women and the critiques they hear. The larger problem is, those critiques are passed on to all of us. When a non-actress-sized woman hears someone tell a thin woman that her legs are ?like tree trunks,? she?ll only see herself as even more flawed.

The People article talked about how Emma and her co-star, Daryl McCormack, got comfortable for the nude scenes. They and director Sophie Hyde all got naked and rehearsed that way after discussing their bodies and their relationships with their bodies, including what they liked and disliked. That sounds like my version of hell given my own body issues, but it must have been incredibly freeing for them. I like this new journey for Emma. I like that?s she?s dictating what?s desirable now. Like when Diane Keaton did her first full-frontal nude scene at 57, I?m sure we?ll be phrasing this as how brave Emma is but it shouldn?t be brave, it?s just a choice. And the best part is, it?s a choice Emma got to make on her own terms.

Emma Thompson: The rise in plastic surgery 'is a form of collective psychosis'
Emma Thompson has a film coming out called Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. She plays ?a widow who hires a young male escort so she can finally explore the sexual intimacy that her marriage lacked,? according to People Mag. Emma has been out and about in recent days, hyping the movie and talking about her first-ever nude scene at the age of 62. Emma is oozing with talent as a writer and actor, so much so that I don?t think she ever gets credit for being thin and attractive. Like, Emma is an attractive woman and she?s been attractive at every stage of her life. She also has the kind of figure which looks good in expensive clothes. She absolutely has some pretty-person privilege, and she doesn?t really acknowledge that as she talks about ageing, plastic surgery and what it?s like to be naked on camera at the age of 62.

On plastic surgery: When asked if shes ever considered plastic surgery, Thompson vehemently said shes against it. Why would you do that to yourself, I simply dont understand. I do honestly think the cutting of yourself off to put it in another place in order to avoid appearing to do what youre actually doing, which is aging, which is completely natural, is a form of collective psychosis. I really do think its a very strange thing to do.

She admits that she?s at an age when people often opt for face lifts. Ive always thought that, though. But Ive always been a kind of card-carrying, militant feminist when it comes to womens bodies and whats been done to them, what were told to expect of ourselves, what were told to do to ourselves.?

Filming the untreated body: She said that societal expectations made going nude difficult. Its very challenging to be nude at 62. Nothing has changed in the dreadful demands made upon women in the real-world world but also in acting. This thing of having to be thin is still the same as it ever was, and actually in some ways I think its worse now. Thompson said that her age both helped and hurt matters. I dont think I couldve done it before the age that I am. And yet, of course, the age that I am makes it extremely challenging because we arent used to seeing untreated bodies on the screen.

[From People]

Again, there?s some unacknowledged pretty-person privilege happening here. I know why Emma doesn?t acknowledge it, and that?s because she was told throughout her career that she wasn?t ?pretty enough? or ?young enough,? so that?s not how she sees herself. But she?s always been a slim, attractive blonde woman who had enough money, time and access to take care of herself. Now, I also think that cosmetic surgery is too prevalent and I agree that so many women are going under the knife because they?re told by society that they don?t look young enough or hot enough. But I also think, fundamentally, let women do what they want. If getting some work done makes someone feel better or happier or more confident, go buck wild.

(I?d also like to say that it is increasingly exotic to see the rare actor who IS aging naturally on-screen. Usually, it?s just the European actors and some of the British actors who don?t mind or care about looking old, wrinkly and unmoisturized. What a revelation it was to see Hugh Grant?s dry-ass wrinkled face in The Undoing.)

Emma Thompson warns of climate change, jokes about people eating their pets
Greta Thunberg addressed the U.N. (and stared down Trump), shaming world leaders for their inaction on climate change. Jason Momoa addressed the U.N., too. Jane Fonda is organizing Fire Drill Fridays and getting arrested. Maggie Gyllenhaal joined the fight against climate change because of her daughter. Another celebrity whos been involved in this crucial work is Emma Thompson. She spoke at an Extinction Rebellion protest last week, delivering a pointed warning about climate change in the form of a mock weather forecast:

Emma Thompson issued a stark warning about the climate crisis, suggesting that conditions may become so dire that people will eat their pets for protein.

The actor delivered a mock weather forecast outside BBC Broadcasting House at an Extinction Rebellion protest in London, where she outlined the gloomy projections, a Daily Mail video shows.

Climate crisis trends show an increased chance of warmer, wetter winters and hotter, dryer summers, along with an increase of frequency and intensity of extremes, she said. Better wrap up warm, stockpile food and remember there is a surprising amount of protein in the average household pet.

Standing in front of two maps that showed areas of the U.K. that are at risk of flooding by 2030, the climate activist warned if temperatures continued to rise in the country there could be a catastrophe.

Looking ahead, we are on course to sail past our 1.5 degree centigrade target, putting us on track for long-lasting and irreversible change, the 60-year-old continued.

[From Aol.]

Emma has been working with Extinction Rebellion for a while now. Satire often gets people to pay attention: People wont necessarily care when they hear about the possibility of hotter, dryer summers: If summers are already hot and dry, who really cares if they get more hot and more dry? On the other hand, people will be more likely to pause to listen when someone suggests that beloved pets can be a great source of protein, because they will want to figure out what the heck the person is talking about, realizing that, surely, surely, someone wasnt being serious about eating Spot. But that ridiculous, horrific thought might make them think more seriously about climate change and its repercussions. Im grateful to Emma, to Jane, to Jason, and to Greta for the work they are doing, but Im still waiting to see what tangible steps leaders are going to take in the face of protests and dire warnings from the scientific community about how were fast reaching a tipping point that we wont be able to recover from.

Emma Thompson gushes about Hannah Gadsby: 'she was a mind bomb'
Back in July, we saw some fun pictures of Emma Thompson and Hannah Gadsby dancing home after spending lunch day-drinking in the pub near Emmas house. A month earlier, Hannah was visiting Emma in Los Angeles when Emma was interviewed by Mary McNamara from the L.A. Times about Late Night. McNamara mentioned that the pair became friends when Emma visited with Hannah after a show in Edinburgh. The funny part was that Hannah wasnt totally clear on who Emma was: Hannah knew she wore a bonnet in something.

Emma is promoting her Wham!-inspired Christmas movie, Last Christmas, which was released on Friday. In a profile with the New York Times, she mentioned how much she adores Hannah! This was in the context of 10 things that she cant live without:

Emma Thompson is frank: She admits that her bank balance often rules her career. Sometimes Im not very rich, so I say to my agents, Can you find me a job that might pay well? she said. Because then I can pursue my cultural interests.

But her private life revolves very much around the log fire, said Thompson, who is 60. The moment that for me is the most valuable is when the family will sit down, and we eat together ? something that she or her husband, Greg Wise, or their 19-year-old daughter, Gaia, has cooked ? and we talk about cultural events and politics and philosophy.

To me, conversation is at the center of personal culture, Thompson added, before revealing her essentials, a mix of favorites old and new.

Hannahs recent show comes in at number 1 on Emmas list (of course):

1. Hannah Gadsbys Douglas

Ive never come across any single artist whos changed my perspective on the world more. I think the last time I just woke up in the way that she made me wake up was when I read ?The Madwoman in the Attic, that wonderful feminist literary criticism. Hannah opened so many peoples minds with such an extraordinary explosion. She was a mind bomb. Its very much about her living with autism, which is so interesting and helpful and current.

2. George Michaels Heal the Pain

Its my favorite song by him. ?Heal the Pain, which is not one that a lot of people know, features strongly in our film and expresses a huge amount of what the films about, which is looking after yourself, taking responsibility for yourself and understanding that its complex and hard to be a human, and that its all right to be inconsistent and uncertain.

4. The Overstory by Richard Powers

Thats the best book Ive read in 10 years. Its a remarkable piece of literature, and the moment it speaks to is climate change. So, for me, its a lodestone. Its a mind-opening fiction, and it connects us all in a very positive way to the things that we have to do if we want to regain our planet. Weve got lots and lots of trees where we live in Scotland. If Im feeling unwell or unsettled in any way, I always go and sit with a tree or walk through the trees, and thats incredibly healing and helpful.

9. Black of Dunoons Potato Scones It was my dads favorite food, which cant have helped, because he died of heart disease. Theyre little triangular, flat pancakes made with potatoes and flour and salt. You can get them in various sorts of places around Scotland. But the ones made by Blacks, to my mind, theyve never been beaten, because they have a peculiar glutinous quality. And each time Im in Scotland, I have one with about half a pound of butter.

[From The New York Times]

Emma also mentions Stella McCartneys clothing, Young Frankenstein, and Edinburgh Festival Fringe. I love Emmas list. For me, potatoes are their own food group, so Im going to book a flight to Scotland as soon as Im done typing this. I also love that Emma is unreserved in her praise of Hannah, not only because I admire and enjoy them, but because its a gift to celebrate and support the work of people in your life. I also appreciate that Emma is honest about her own work choices, and how she sometimes will take on a project for the paycheck.

Im in complete agreement with Emmas mind bomb description of Hannah, who is now selling merchandise. As a professional tea-drinker, I really want this mug to add to my collection. Id mentioned that Id seen Douglas and loved it. I was in the third row, which meant that I could see Hannah clearly(!), and I spent a lot of time doubled-over, laughing. I also really want Emma to write a part for Hannah in her next movie, no matter how small. I cant imagine that shes not already trying to plan this. Id prefer a full-length badass-buddy comedy, but Ill take a five-minute scene-stealing cameo, too. Im not picky.

Emma Thompson says Bigly Boy Trump asked her out after her divorce
President Bigly Boy has long been fascinated by Hollywood and even more specifically, he?s also been fascinated with glamorous movie-star women. Salma Hayek has previously discussed Bigly Boy?s go-to move, which basically sounds like being negged by the most bigly a–hole in the universe. Bigly Boy wanted to date Salma but she refused, then he got the National Enquirer to run a story about how he refused to date her, then he called her up and told her that she should go on a date with him to ?prove? the story false. I believe Salma?s version of events. Just as believe Emma Thompson when she shared a similar story.

British actress Emma Thompson says she once turned down an offer by Donald Trump to stay at the Trump Towers, years before he became the U.S. president. Speaking on a Scandinavian TV show, Thompson said that while filming the 1998 film ?Primary Colors,? the phone in her trailer rang and the voice on the other end said, ?Hi, it?s Donald Trump here.?

Thompson said it was ?like a moose has just entered my trailer,? as that phone had never rung before.

She said Trump called to offer her ?some accommodation in one of my Trump Towers. They?re really comfortable.? She said he added: ?I think we would get on very well. Maybe we could have dinner sometime.? Thompson said she did not accept the offer.

[From Page Six]

She goes on to say that she regrets not taking him up on his offer for dinner because then she would have had so many stories. The only part of this that makes me go ?hm? is the whole idea that Trump would be attracted to such an intelligent woman. I mean, Emma is the whole package and I would marry her. But she?s not, like, a beauty pageant contestant. She doesn?t have that glossy look that he seems to like. Then I remember – it was enough for him that she was A) blonde and B) a movie star. He probably also liked that she had an accent. He seems to have a thing for women with accents.

Emma Thompson: Britain is 'a cake-filled misery-laden grey old island'
Here are some assorted photos of Emma Thompson at the Berlin Film Festival over the past several days. She was at the Berlinale to promote her latest film, Alone in Berlin, and to co-host the Berlinale tribute to the late Alan Rickman, her dear friend. Emma is fabulous, as always, and I was looking for a reason to post some photos of her, and that?s when I came across some comments she made at a press conference at the Berlinale. She was being asked about the upcoming referendum vote in Great Britain about remaining in the European Union. And she said many (funny) words.

How she describes Britain: ?A tiny little cloud-bolted, rainy corner of sort-of Europe, a cake-filled misery-laden grey old island.?

Should Britain remain in the EU? ?We should be taking down borders, not putting them up. I feel European even though I live in Great Britain, and in Scotland as well. So of course I?m going to vote to stay in Europe. Are you kidding? Oh my God, of course. It would be madness not to. It?s a crazy idea not to.?

[From The Spectator]

The Sun has a collection of reactions from British MPs, mostly Tories, most of whom are completely outraged by what she said. One Tory even threatened to ?spank? her as punishment, which? my God. All that just because she called Britain a ?cake-filled misery-laden grey old island.? Which, no offense, is what many people think of Britain, whether they?re British or not.

Emma Thompson suggests killing Academy members to solve #OscarsSoWhite
Emma Thompson is a two-time Oscar winner, one for adapted screenplay, and one for Best Actress. She?s been invited to the Oscars many times as a nominee and a presenter, but she is not an apologist for the Academy at all. Emma attended the British Film Awards several days ago (with her daughter Gaia, seen in these photos) and she was asked about the ongoing discussion around #OscarsSoWhite and the changes the Academy has made around membership voting privileges. Emma?s answer was? unique! And please, don?t take everything she says literally.

Emma Thompson has offered a refreshingly blunt take on the matter of Hollywood acting so up-in-arms about an institution that, historically, has been pretty white the whole time. Asked about Hollywood?s public outcry, Thompson told a reporter at the British Film Awards, ?It?s hilarious.? Her reasoning: ?It?s no change there. It?s not as if [the Oscar nominations have] ever been awash with people of color.?

Cutting to the chase, she added, ?Let?s face it, the Oscar membership is mainly old, white men. That?s the fact of it. So, either you wait for them all to die,? said before jokingly offering up another option. ?Or kill them off slowly?I mean, I don?t know. There?s so many options, aren?t there??

On a more positive note, Thompson ended the interview by giving the Screen Actors Guild props for actually implementing useful ways of encouraging diversity. Now if only the Academy could encourage diversity and, on a much lesser note, figure out a way to require Thompson to appear at the Oscars, we?d be happy.

[From Vanity Fair]

You know what?s sort of funny/sad to me? That the conversation we?re having about the Academy is the same conversation we have in America about politics. Like, what do we do about the old, white racists? They skew everything in politics and in Hollywood. And in politics, the answer always boils down to: well, we just have to wait until all of those old racists die out. That seems to be the answer for the Academy too, although I do admire Cheryl Boone Isaacs for giving it the old college try.

Emma Thompson: Sexism has 'become more entrenched & more prevalent'
Emma Thompson has always been a truth-teller when it comes to women?s issues, sexism, ageism and the entertainment industry. And I love her, even if I don?t always 100% agree with her, I still like to hear what she has to say. Emma?s promoting a new project ? The Legend of Barney Thomson ? and she gave an interview to the UK?s Radio Times. She ended up throwing down some hard truths about sexism and objectification.

Speaking to Radio Times this week, Emma Thompson, 56, described how unpleasantness towards women over their appearance has become prevalent – and she thinks it’s ‘s–t’.

She said: ‘I think it’s still completely s***, actually. I don’t think there’s any appreciable improvement and I think that, for women, the question of how they are supposed to look is worse than it was even when I was young.’

She added: ‘When I was younger I really did think we were on our way to a better world and when I look at it now, it is in a worse state than I have known it. Particularly for women and I find that very disturbing and sad?nothing has changed. And that some forms of sexism and unpleasantness to women have become more entrenched and indeed more prevalent.’

Shunning the pressure to look youthful, Emma hit the headlines just this week for her new transformative role as a 77-year-old prostitute in The Legend Of Barney Thomson, for which she has to spend three hours a day in make-up adding wrinkles to her cheeks, neck and even ear lobes.

[From The Daily Mail]

Well, that was dark. Some days, I do believe that nothing has changed too, that women still have huge mountains to climb when it comes to our reproductive freedoms, our civil rights, our right to exist, date, work and love without being abused, assaulted or murdered by an intimate partner or a stranger. But on other days, it?s clearer to see that some progress is being made in some, if not many, planes of existence. While there is a lot of ?one step forward, two steps back? when it comes to how women are judged and how we judge each other, I do think we are in a better position overall than where we were, say, 30 years ago.
