Carrie-Anne Moss became a big celebrity in the late ?90s because of The Matrix. She was already in her 30s at the time, and she ended scoring some good roles beyond the Matrix franchise, but I always wondered why she didn?t become a bigger deal. She?s pretty and talented and an underrated actress. I looked through her IMDB and I?m pleased that she works consistently in film and television, but again, she deserved to be a much bigger deal. Maybe she didn?t want that, or maybe Hollywood ageism struck her down and the only roles she got offered were for moms and grandmothers. Carrie-Anne spoke about ageism in casting with Justine Bateman, who is currently promoting her new book on the subject, Face: One Square Foot of Skin.
To promote her new book, Face: One Square Foot of Skin, a creative nonfiction tome about the ways society responds to women as they age, actress turned author and filmmaker Justine Bateman drafted friend Carrie-Anne Moss to moderate a conversation on behalf of New Yorks 92nd Street Y. The wide-ranging chat saw Bateman open up on eschewing criticism over her naturally aging face (I had to get rid of this idea that my face was something that was horrible and should be fixed, she said) while the low-key Moss elaborated on life as an actress over 40 in Hollywood.
I had heard that at 40 everything changed, said Moss, who is now 53 and prepping for the release of The Matrix 4 in which she reprises her role as Trinity. I didnt believe in that because I dont believe in just jumping on a thought system that I dont really align with. But literally the day after my 40th birthday, I was reading a script that had come to me and I was talking to my manager about it. She was like, Oh, no, no, no, its not that role [you're reading for], its the grandmother. I may be exaggerating a bit, but it happened overnight. I went from being a girl to the mother to beyond the mother.
Moss said that was a tough transition to process in part because male actors avoid the same trajectory. Moss said she never wanted to stay in the business if she felt like shed have to change everything about herself in order to stay in it. You dont feel like youve aged much and suddenly youre seeing yourself onscreen, she said, adding that its kind of brutal witnessing the process. I would look at these French and European actresses and they just had something about them that felt so confident in their own skin. I couldnt wait to be that. I strive for that. Its not easy being in this business. Theres a lot of external pressure.
Moss praised Bateman for writing Face, which serves as a follow-up to her 2018 book that examines Hollywood and popular culture, Fame: The Hijacking of Reality. For Face, Bateman, 55, said she was compelled to take a deeper look at the unfair expectations placed on women, particularly women in the public eye like her, as they grow older. I find it psychotic that we have leapfrogged any conversations that we should be cutting up our faces, she said. Its become normalized. Time out, time out! This is not a fact. This is an idea that we can either pull in and make a belief or not. Im like, fk that.

I think women should do what they want to do as far as plastic surgery and injectables and all that, just as I think women should be free to NOT do any of that as well. I hate that it?s an expectation in Hollywood, like American audiences would freak out at the sight of a wrinkled or naturally-aged face. If anything, the face work so many actresses get is more unnerving to see on-screen than their natural faces would be, and I?m talking about Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, Courteney Cox and all of them. Anyway, I completely believe that Carrie-Anne was being offered grandmother roles soon after she turned 40. They never knew what to do with her! European filmmakers would have known what to do with her.

Gwyneth Paltrow is a narcissist and an elitist. What I?ve learned through watching Gwyneth?s Goop empire grow is that Gwyneth is also just a regular old stunt-queening famewhore too. If anything, she?s sort of worse than the Kardashian-esque Instagram influencers sure, those people shill ?waist trainers,? laxatives and diet teas. But Gwyneth has built a whole-ass empire on fake science, ?wellness,? and headline-grabbing stunt-queening. All of that is made worse by two facts: Gwyneth is smart enough to know better AND Gwyneth lives inside her own ass and is humorless about her own bullsh-t. Behold, a new Gwyneth interview where she describes HERSELF as someone with an ?irreverent sense of humor.? Girl? stop.
She?s not a dumb stunt-queen, she?s just very beautiful & irreverent: ?Well, the people who know me well know that my irreverent sense of humour is very much at the core of who I am. Sometimes, I think people are surprised by that, because I look a certain way, or whatever assumptions they make about me. Humour has always been a part of the Goop brand and marketing. Weve always had pithy, funny subject lines. Weve always wanted to name our products things that were funny and appealing and also said really clearly what they did.
Whether the vagina-candle & other things were stunts: We were not trying to create some kind of a publicity stunt whatsoever, but we did see that it drove a lot of interest and traffic to the site. Not that we do stunts all the time, but we do know the power of a good joke or a racy product name.
She wants to get into the CBD space: I would love to get into the CBD space, I think that there are some really interesting studies around CBD and the efficiency of it, especially theres a little bit of THC (the main psychoactive compound in cannabis that produces the high sensation.) but I think were a way away from that. The regulation is really difficult.

It?s funny that she?s a bit reticent about getting into the CBD market because of all of the regulations. That?s why she sticks with the fake science, the stickers which heal cancer, the jade eggs for your bajingo and the non-stop ?cleanses.? It?s because those markets are not as closely regulated. As for Gwyneth?s stunts and her ?irreverent sense of humor? it reminds me of when Rooney Mara went around saying that she?s ?aloof.? Is Gwyneth ?irreverent? or is she just the woman who was cool in high school but is now the 40-something who makes fun of overweight people and still says sh-t like ?you hate me because I?m so pretty!?

Kim K has been having an interesting few months. Kim filed for divorce in February from husband Kanye West. Then earlier this month Forbes announced that Kim had crossed the billionaire threshold. And it seems that great news keeps pouring in. In case you missed it, Kim has caught the Bridgerton bug like the rest of us. Kim has even been TikToking her reactions to each episode. So, having Nicola Coughlin reach out to Kim via Twitter most definitely brightened Kims day. In Kims and Nicolas Twitter exchange, Nicola shared that Kim and her sisters are the inspiration for Lady Whistledown and the Featherington sisters. Nicola also said that the same designer who made Kims Met Gala corset, Mr. Pearl, also made Nicolas corset for Bridgerton. Below is more on the exchange via Huffington Post:
Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington on the hit Netflix series, tweeted on Tuesday that the Kardashians ?were a massive inspiration for the Featheringtons? and a regular topic of conversation during fittings for the Regency-era drama.
She also claimed a link between her corset on the show and one made for Kardashian. ?You?ve been part of the Bridgerton world for longer than you know,? Coughlan wrote.
Kardashian was beyond happy at the news.
?I am freaking out!!!!!? she responded, to Coughlan?s delight and astonishment, before asking if that made her ?an honorary Duchess in Bridgerton.?

This is one of the cutest stories I have read this week. We definitely needed the levity. I follow Nicola on Twitter and she is so refreshing. I really enjoy how Nicola reached out to Kim to tell her that she and her sisters were the inspiration behind the Featheringtons. You can tell that Mrs. Featherington is definitely Kris Jenner-esque in trying to get her daughters married. I also enjoyed how excited this bit of information made Kim. Now that Nicola has confirmed that the Featheringtons were inspired by the Kardashian/Jenner clan, I cant unsee it despite sort of knowing it before. Im going to watch the show to see which sister is which Kardashian. It was also very sweet that Nicola was so excited that her corset was created by the same designer that created Kims Met Gala corset. Nicola seems like a Kim stan. And how precious is it that Nicola made Kim an honorary Lady of Bridgerton? To be fair, with all the royals and billionaire men chasing Kim now that she is single, its not a stretch that Kim could indeed become Lady Kardashian of Calabasas in the near future.

Theres hope yet for those of us looking for love in the time of COVID. Who knows, that random online yoga class may lead to true love. At least that is what happened for Vanessa Hudgens and her new beau, Pittsburgh Piratess shortstop, Cole Tucker. Supposedly, Vanessa and Tucker got the googly eyes for each other in a Zoom meditation group last year. I guess they connected over their love of meditation and the rest is history. Their romance started in November but Vanessa and Tucker didnt make their relationship Instagram official until Valentines Day. Vanessa told Entertainment Tonight about her random hookup:
In a new interview with ET, the 32-year-old actress reveals she and her new boyfriend actually first connected over Zoom. The two were first spotted together last November, and went Instagram official on Valentines Day.
Me and Cole met on a Zoom meditation group. Very random, yes, Hudgens tells ETs Katie Krause. Zoom, youve got to love it.
Hes just kind of perfect for me. I am [happy]. I really am, she continues. I think that its also so important to stay grateful for everything that you have in life. Ive been making that a priority, and I feel like its just been making magic happen all the more.

Listen, Vanessa has a penchant for dating super hot men (Zac Efron, Austin Butler) and Tucker Cole is not bad on the eyes at all. Anyways, I need to know how these women manifest these men in the most random ways. I literally teach an online yoga and meditation class and a man showing up for the class is the rarest of occasions. Not to be thirsty but perhaps Vanessas luck will extend to those of us who lost a year of dating and smutting all over town (it was a rough year for some of us singletons).
Scrolling through their Instagram feeds, they seem to be really into each other. I personally love to celebrate love. Despite the side eye I have been giving Vanessa since last years COVID meltdown, I wish her luck with her new fella. Speaking of COVID, hopefully the two stuck to protocols while getting to know each other and didnt take unnecessary risks. But then again, this is Vanessa some of us will die Hudgens. I do like that the two took their time before officially confirming their relationship. It is nice to hold something close to your vest before telling others about it. Perhaps keeping their relationship secret for several months gave them the time to build a strong foundation.
