Naomi Watts has been open about her experiences with early menopause for years. She was one of the first celebrities to discuss it, and has said shed like to lift the stigma and silence surrounding menopause. Naomi has a new book coming out on January 21, 2025 titled Dare I Say It: Everything I Wish Id Known about Menopause. It deals with menopause and aging in general. Naomi will tell stories from her life and feature conversations with friends and experts. The book is meant to feel like an intimate chat with a close friend.
?Women have had to suffer in silence and shame for too long about the changes they undergo during menopause, with little access to information, support or even much of an open conversation,? Watts tells PEOPLE exclusively. ?I hope that this book can play a part in making women feel a little less alone, a little more supported, and dare I say, a little more excited about the natural changes that life has in store for us.?
Dare I Say It is the resource Watts ? already a leading voice in menopause awareness ? craved when at age 36, she found herself completely caught off guard by menopause symptoms, which typically begin between ages 45 and 55, per the National Institutes of Health.
Feeling confused, alone and unsupported about this stage of her life, Watts was determined to do better for herself and for other women and began boldly using her platform to normalize conversations about this natural process,? reads a press release about the forthcoming book.
?I want this book to read like you?re sitting down over coffee and having an intimate chat with your girlfriend,? Watts said, in a statement. ?I hope it will be of help for anyone trying to get a hold on this phase of life and make it a time of liberation rather than purely a time of trial. Menopause is a part of a woman?s midlife, but midlife is about far more than menopause.?
Watts also tells PEOPLE that she is ?so grateful to everyone who spoke to me for sharing their stories.?
In a message to her future readers, she adds, ?I can?t wait for you to hear about the highs and lows and everything in between about this life stage and get some real, practical advice and comfort about how to take on these changes head-on.?
Dare I Say It is a natural next step for Watts, who founded her menopausal wellness brand, Stripes Beauty, in 2022. Speaking with PEOPLE about the brand earlier this year, the star said, ?I know I had shame and fear and doubt. Chances are that a lot of other people are going through the same thing.?
I had a lot of anxiety in the lead up to creating this business, and then I just felt like, well, every woman is going to get to this point. Why are we not getting better care? she added at the time. Theres just a lack of education and research.
[From People]
I just turned 40 and I already have anxiety about entering perimenopause. I?m halfway through Dr. Jen Gunter?s The Menopause Manifesto and last month, I started adjusting my workouts accordingly. I also am really focused on my nutrition, too. I do think that, as with every topic involving women?s reproductive health, a lack of education about what to expect beyond getting hot flashes and not being able to sleep. I?ve learned a lot about what to expect from my body, but there really are so many women out there that are either too embarrassed or made to feel shame when it comes to learning about their bodies. I think it?s great when celebrities are open about such topics because they can reach more people in general. Even more so, I love that these types of stories open it up for us to share our stories!

I bought a couple of the menopause greeting cards Naomi Watts designed and sent them to my girlfriends. They were really well received; I highly recommend it. And remember the cards raise money for the Alliance for Period Supplies. In addition to the cards, Naomi has founded a line of face, hair, body, vaginal, and supplement products for menopausal women called Stripes. To back up the products, the Stripes website has an expert advice page with ?Menoguides? offering topics from sex to moods to how to talk to your doctors. It?s fantastic and a real testament to Naomi?s commitment to making menopause a part of the national discussion. One of the unique parts of Naomi?s personal experience is that she was essentially going through perimenopause as she was having her kids. She started peri early, at 36, and that was right when she was trying to start her family with Liev Schreiber. But as she?s told us before, no one had ever talked to her about perimenopause so she felt ?very alone.? Which is why she?s so determined to make sure other women don?t have to navigate this part of life on their own.
Naomi Watts has shared more of her experiences with perimenopause and menopause ? and is encouraging other women to do the same.
At The New Pause Symposium in New York City on Friday, presented by The Swell and Stripes, Watts said that her personal experiences inspired her to create Stripes, a skincare brand for women in midlife.
I found myself at 36 and perimenopausal, a word I didnt even know about, and at the precipice of trying to start a family. So I went into complete panic, felt very lonely, very much less-than or like some kind of failure and what was I going to do? There was no one to talk to, there was no information, basically on my visit to the doctor, who said, Well youre not getting pregnant your bloodwork is indicating that youre close to menopause so I was freaking out.
Watts acknowledged that there are more resources for women in perimenopause and menopause than there were 18 years ago, but much more more education and awareness are still needed.
I went through anxiety, shame, confusion, panic and managed to fall pregnant naturally after two years of trying and getting my system right with different alternatives, since I wasnt a candidate for IVF, she said. After the second child, I went through massive night sweats, hot flashes and I thought this is terrible, and I would try to test out the community of my friends and I was sort of met with nervous laughs and shrugging it off, and I thought Oh wow no one else is there, I better keep silent, and thats how it was.
Watts also asked her mother, who told her she had been 45 when she started perimenopause. And thats all I knew, she said. There was no detail around it. There was no handholding from doctors. The doctors said okay, Heres a patch or a gel or a spray.
I just knew that this is a road that no one else should have to walk through alone again without a community, because without proper care taken you are going to turn in on yourself.
[From People]
I?ve said it before but let me reiterate my admiration for what Naomi is doing. I respect that she?s backing up her product with advice and support. It feels like she?s building a whole community for women. Unlike Naomi, my mother never went through any kind of menopause. She got periods forever until she was diagnosed with uterine cancer and had a full hysterectomy to eliminate it. So we didn?t have any notes to compare. I entered peri at 48. Granted I was unfamiliar with peri until I was knocking at its door, but I had friends who had entered it, so I was not alone, like Naomi was. And I certainly wasn?t considering kids. That must have been lonely as I?m sure everyone both in and out of the medical community wrote off her chances. It?s amazing to be able to bring these things up now. Honestly, talking about menopause and being over 50 with you all in these posts, I?m starting to really feel myself. Community matters. This is how we change opinion. And Naomi gets that.
And check out her products. They aren?t cheap, but they do answer quite a few calls. There?s a cooling mist for hot flashes. The lubes look really good as do the supplements, one that focus on vaginal health and the other on managing hot flashes and brain fog. Plus all the skin and hair care.

| Naomi Watts on menopause: 'brain fog is a big thing' | Added 772 days ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Naomi Watts? cause clbre is menopause. Since that?s near and dear to my heart, her efforts interest me a great deal. Naomi?s current push is to get people talking about menopause as if it was ? wait for it ? a perfectly normal thing. What a revolutionary thought. I love her latest approach. Naomi partnered with Em & Friends on a line of funny menopause greeting cards. Proceeds from the cards will raise money for the Alliance for Period Supplies, which helps to provide period essentials to low-income individuals and families. In her interview with Entertainment Weekly, Naomi discusses her inspiration behind the cards, proper menopause card etiquette and why discussion is so important.
On how the menopause card happened: Well, the artist has been around for a while, and so we joined forces with her. We thought it was a great way to get the community going. If you open that door just a little bit, youll be surprised by how many people are really ready to talk about [menopause]. Humor diffuses awkwardness and pain ? we know that to be true already. And certainly, that was how I saw the vision of the brand. It had to have humor. We want it to be a place that people come and bitch and moan and have real feelings but also laugh at ourselves and make it somehow more bearable.
On menopause card giving etiquette, especially if to women not having symptoms yet: Just say, Well, soon you will! [Laughs] Half the population will be going through menopause [at some point]. The mission of the brand is to end the stigma, and get rid of the confusion and the mystery, and to debunk myths. We want to get it as normalized as we possibly can because were living longer. We live decades after menopause, which is not the case of how it used to be. It really has to become an open conversation.
On recognizing changes: I was having a terrible skin issue on a show [I was working on]. I just thought I was allergic to the makeup or something. I kept changing products and removing things. I got into a conversation with my makeup artist, and we finally figured out that this is what it must be, that the change of hormones [was affecting my skin]. Luckily, she was the same age as me, so we could discuss it. But if she was in her twenties or something, it might have made me uncomfortable. It might have made her uncomfortable.
So that was the biggest thing that affected me in the workplace. Also, brain fog is a big thing. You have to have a really sharp memory when youre being given pages of dialogue every day, sometimes only the night before. And that can be a scary thing because its like, Wait, I always used to have a handle on this, and now suddenly its a whole lot harder.
[From Entertainment Weekly]
?Just say, Well, soon you will!? This is what I love about what Naomi is doing. Menopause is a health issue. And like breastfeeding and postpartum issues, they?re normal health issues, but if no one ever told you what to expect, they?re scary as hell when they happen. It?s important to anticipate them, not be reassured after months of fretting that something is seriously wrong. That?s why I encourage these topics being brought up more casually. Because even if a young woman is years away from them now, when they happen to her, she?ll understand what?s going on. And I think humor is a great way to normalize it. These greeting cards are a nice way to connect. I bought two already. I love the cause they supports, too. I can send them to anyone because everyone knows I?m in menopause. The only person who ever bristled at my mentioning it was my father. And his comment was about how jarring it was to hear his youngest child was in that stage of life, not the menopause itself. Even my kids talk about it with a shoulder shrug.
This is not menopause

Im sorry for the dumb alliterative title but I couldnt help myself! Its Sunday and we have the Oscars tonight, let me have this. Naomi Watts was in a Pink floral watercolor print Chanel gown with black straps and asymmetric ruffles. For part of the Spirits red carpet she had a black jacket draped over it. This looks cute without the jacket and has a flapper vibe. I like how it moved on camera but its not photographing as well. The white and black shoes are all wrong and are throwing this off.

| Naomi Watts on her split from Liev Schreiber: 'transitions are scary' | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Naomi Watts has handled her split from Liev Schreiber like a boss. TMZ reported that had been separated for months before they made the announcement, meaning they had plenty of time to prepare and to time the announcement for the least publicity. They waited until they were done promoting their movie, they waited until awards season was over and they were kind to each other during that time and on social media afterwards. While there were rumors about what may have preceded the split no other parties came out of the woodwork and there wasn’t even the whiff of a scandal. So that’s why it’s notable that Naomi is talking about her breakup from longterm partner, Liev, even if she’s doing it in a general kind of Hallmark-card way:
?I feel I?m in a good place in my life and I want to make sure my kids are healthy, my kids are happy and things are going to go well,? Watts, 48, told The Daily Telegraph Australia in an interview published on Saturday. ?Those are my hopes for me and for all of us.?
The actress went on to discuss that in or out of the spotlight, the breakup has been a time of change for their family of four.
?I feel, whether you?re famous or not, transitions are scary for anybody,?she said. ?I feel like change is always scary, but that?s only because transition for anyone is new and you wonder how things are going to go.?
Even logistical decisions, like where and how to celebrate the holidays, is something Watts admits she needs to resolve.
?I?m still figuring out Christmas plans for this year,? Watts added. ?I obviously want to get back to Australia, but I?m currently working on a TV show, Gypsy, and I?ve only got a limited amount of time off.?

Once you’re out of a bad relationship it can be like ripping a bandaid off and you wonder why you didn’t do it sooner. Of course that depends on if you’re the one whose idea it is to split or if it’s mutual. I get the sense that Naomi is the one who wanted out, that she is the one who ended it and that Liev is the one who forced her hand with his general messiness. That’s just my feeling based on some of his interviews and I could be wrong. Whatever happened, Naomi is going to remain general enough that I doubt we’ll get more of the story from either side. That’s not that good for gossip but it’s masterful from a PR perspective.
Watts hired a chef to do Thanksgiving for her and she Instagrammed it!
Happy thanksgiving!! Thanks to this guy? @littlegemnyc #calltheexperts #knowyourlimits #thanksgiving

| Star: Naomi Watts left Liev Schreiber over fears that he was cheating | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

The tabloids are now playing catch up with Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber’s breakup, which was handled admirably well in the press. In case you missed it, they released a joint statement almost two weeks ago in which they said that they’re splitting but that they still have love and respect for each other. There were a few well-placed source quotes in the major outlets stating that they’ve had problems for a while, but that’s it. Plus they did it in the wake of the Brangelina split and waited until after they were done promoting their projects and the awards ceremonies had wrapped. Star Magazine called the breakup back in January and they seemed to have some insider information about the state of their relationship. (Maybe the paparazzi tipped them off that the two were living apart.) Now that it’s actually happened it’s more of the same from the tabloids, along with whispers that Liev was cheating on Naomi. I don’t doubt that could have happened but we haven’t heard any details about that and so far it’s just rumors. (There’s a 2011 story from The Dirty which has specifics, but that one has been denied by the alleged other woman.) You would think that someone would come out of the woodwork with a story, but there’s nothing. Here’s Star’s report and it’s vague:
“The possibility of Liev straying has been eating away at Naomi for years,? a family insider tells Star. ?There have been a number of rumors about him cheating throughout their relationship, and I wouldn?t be surprised if Naomi felt in her heart that he?d been unfaithful, and she turned a bling eye for the sake of their children, but it?s finally come to a head.?
[From Star Magazine, print edition]
Then the National Enquirer takes it too far by claiming that Naomi was jealous of Liev’s on-air romps as Ray Donovan. Their source claims “Naomi couldn?t get past the fact that Liev was always dallying with the hot women who were his co-stars.” He’s acting and Naomi is an actress too, I’m sure she understands. While I’m annoyed with the number of women who throw themselves at his character that’s not necessarily on Liev. He has a lot of control over the show as we learned in his Esquire profile but I don’t know how far that extends and regardless that’s fiction which shouldn’t reflect on him.
I’m still somewhat broken up over this because I just loved these two together. They handled it well, the tabloids are covering them without nailing down any details, and I’ll say what I’ve said to date about these two: I like that they’re keeping their lives private. Part of that is that there’s not a lot of interest in them, but they’ve cultivated that lack of interest as well.
Naomi celebrated her birthday just a couple of days after the split was announced. Liev commented on her birthday post on Instagram “Happy Birthday Sweetheart.” Then, Naomi posted this nice message for Liev’s birthday just six days later.
Happy Birthday to this one!! @lievschreiber ???

I’ve said that if Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts ever split up I would need time to get over it. I am sitting here eating a pint of caramel gelato with rolos mixed into it because that time is now. Star Magazine reported in January that Naomi and Liev had split and were going to keep it amicable for their kids. Then they were seen out together with their sons Sasha, 9, and Samuel, 7, with Naomi instagramming a photo of Liev around that tim. They went to SAGs together in February and walked the red carpet at the premiere of their joint film together, a boxing biopic called The Bleeder, at the Venice Film Festival and at TIFF. They looked relaxed and happy and like everything was fine, however Liev took their oldest son with him to the Emmys last week. Well their movie is out, The Emmys are over, Ray Donovan’s season just wrapped and Liev and Naomi announced that they’ve split. They’ve been together since 2005 (here’s a link to the story of how they got together) and they never married.
“Over the past few months we’ve come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple,” Schreiber and Watts said in a joint statement to PEOPLE.
“It is with great love, respect, and friendship in our hearts that we look forward to raising our children together and exploring this new phase of our relationship. While we appreciate your curiosity and support, we ask the press to be mindful of our children and respect their right to privacy,” the statement continued.
A source on the set of Schreiber’s Showtime series Ray Donovan tells PEOPLE, “They have been on the rocks for quite a while.”
[From People]
TMZ claims that Liev and Naomi have been living apart since January, which is similar to what People’s source is saying and is also consistent with Star’s reporting at the time. So they’ve tried to make it work, it hasn’t, and they’re broken up now. I do think that they’re going to try to keep it above board and won’t leak stories to the press, but we’ll see. It’s promising that this is a joint announcement and that it’s so cordial and frankly – nice. I would think Naomi is behind it as she just got fed up, but it’s hard to tell.

Naomi Watts covers New Beauty Magazine to promote her role in Allegiant. It has a miserable 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it underperformed at the box office to the point where Lionsgate’s stock has fallen and the studio is running scared. There’s still the second part of the final book, Ascendant, coming out in 2017 and since it hasn’t been filmed yet the budget has reportedly been cut.
Getting back to Watts, People had some photos from the editorial and she looks lovely and kind of regal. Her legs are impossibly long on the cover and since she’s only 5’5? there was surely Photoshop involved. She’s talking to New Beauty Magazine, so she discusses hair, makeup and plastic surgery. She sounds very low maintenance, but I’ve seen her casual style and she usually looks comfortable but well put together, not like she just threw something on, went out with wet hair and no makeup and added some ugly shoes. (You know who I’m talking about.) That’s the way she describes herself though.
She doesn’t wear heels unless she has to
I do enjoy the red carpet for the reason that you get to express yourself. But, ordinarily, I would never put on high heels unless I absolutely had to.
She keeps her hair and makeup simple day-to-day
I love the two [hair and makeup] as a form of expression, but day to day, I?m pretty much makeup-free and in jeans, T-shirts and sweaters. I?m not even very good at actually doing my own hair or my makeup?and I?m one of those people who walks out the door with wet hair all the time. If anything, maybe I put on some concealer, blush and mascara, but often not even that. My mother was not very good at giving beauty tips, but she was?and still is?a striking beauty. I was always very aware of her beauty, but I never felt as beautiful as her, or that I could ever be that beautiful.
She doesn’t do Botox
Personally I feel, for me, it?s tough to do Botox?but it?s also tough not to! Sometimes, I think I need the help. Whatever anyone else chooses is fine with me, no judgment. Of course, I want to look the best I can, but I am playing characters that should match my age and the women and the material that I am interested in are usually going through something. I have to be able to live in my face and tell the story of the character I?ve taken on. But?I?ll never say never.
On coming to terms with aging
Coming to terms with aging as gracefully as possible is the best thing anyone can do, no matter who you are, but everyone has their good days and bad days. I feel so much better as a person now than I did in my 20s, but most of the time I feel like I?m still a kid. There are days you feel like you are on top of it and you are OK and at peace with it; then there are the days you still feel 28 inside ? until you catch that reflection or see a photograph and realize you aren?t anymore.
[From New Beauty and some quotes via People]
She never looks frozen or altered to me, although she looks extremely good at 47, so I believe her. Watts says she does something called a Triad Facial, which is a combination of microdermabrasion, lasers and a peel. A lot of people are wondering if Watts’s quotes about Botox were a kind of gentle reference to her friend Nicole Kidman’s very extreme, very obvious work. I doubt she realizes that it could be taken that way, though. While Watts acknowledges that Kidman helped her immensely when she was a struggling actress in Australia, she implied in a recent interview with Net-a-Porter that she doesn’t see her much. She said “We?re busy people that live in different places” but that “even after big gaps [of not seeing each other], we just take up where we left off.” I doubt that Nicole was the first face that came to mind when she thought Botox. That’s her old friend. You think of your friend like “oh, that’s Nicole, her work isn’t that bad.” (At least that’s how I think of my friends who have had injections and/or plastic surgery. Like I can tell they’ve had it done but I knew them, so it doesn’t seem as noticeable as it would if they were a random stranger.)
I also wish more celebrities would take this approach to Botox especially. It’s very obvious on both TV and in the movies. When someone is playing a modern character who would have the resources to get Botox it doesn’t distract me as much, but several years into the zombie apocalypse there shouldn’t be any Botox left and a person’s face should move, you know?

Given all of her career and personal success, it?s no wonder Naomi Watts is beaming in her front page snapshot for The EDIT's latest issue.
The 47-year-old ?King Kong? cutie worked with photographer Laurie Bartley and stylist Tracy Taylor for the spread and discussed how she hopes her kids have a more secure upbringing than she had- ?I definitely would like more structure for my children. But I really don't want to overcompensate, and I think there is a tendency to do that when you've had certain things go on in your childhood.?
Ms. Watts also gushed over her longtime beau Liev Schreiber- ?[We are] inspired by each other, and I think there's great respect for one another's work. He's got major [acting] chops and he's incredibly bright and funny. I just love his mind.?
