Back in July, we saw some fun pictures of Emma Thompson and Hannah Gadsby dancing home after spending lunch day-drinking in the pub near Emmas house. A month earlier, Hannah was visiting Emma in Los Angeles when Emma was interviewed by Mary McNamara from the L.A. Times about Late Night. McNamara mentioned that the pair became friends when Emma visited with Hannah after a show in Edinburgh. The funny part was that Hannah wasnt totally clear on who Emma was: Hannah knew she wore a bonnet in something.
Emma is promoting her Wham!-inspired Christmas movie, Last Christmas, which was released on Friday. In a profile with the New York Times, she mentioned how much she adores Hannah! This was in the context of 10 things that she cant live without:
Emma Thompson is frank: She admits that her bank balance often rules her career. Sometimes Im not very rich, so I say to my agents, Can you find me a job that might pay well? she said. Because then I can pursue my cultural interests.
But her private life revolves very much around the log fire, said Thompson, who is 60. The moment that for me is the most valuable is when the family will sit down, and we eat together ? something that she or her husband, Greg Wise, or their 19-year-old daughter, Gaia, has cooked ? and we talk about cultural events and politics and philosophy.
To me, conversation is at the center of personal culture, Thompson added, before revealing her essentials, a mix of favorites old and new.
Hannahs recent show comes in at number 1 on Emmas list (of course):
1. Hannah Gadsbys Douglas
Ive never come across any single artist whos changed my perspective on the world more. I think the last time I just woke up in the way that she made me wake up was when I read ?The Madwoman in the Attic, that wonderful feminist literary criticism. Hannah opened so many peoples minds with such an extraordinary explosion. She was a mind bomb. Its very much about her living with autism, which is so interesting and helpful and current.
2. George Michaels Heal the Pain
Its my favorite song by him. ?Heal the Pain, which is not one that a lot of people know, features strongly in our film and expresses a huge amount of what the films about, which is looking after yourself, taking responsibility for yourself and understanding that its complex and hard to be a human, and that its all right to be inconsistent and uncertain.
4. The Overstory by Richard Powers
Thats the best book Ive read in 10 years. Its a remarkable piece of literature, and the moment it speaks to is climate change. So, for me, its a lodestone. Its a mind-opening fiction, and it connects us all in a very positive way to the things that we have to do if we want to regain our planet. Weve got lots and lots of trees where we live in Scotland. If Im feeling unwell or unsettled in any way, I always go and sit with a tree or walk through the trees, and thats incredibly healing and helpful.
9. Black of Dunoons Potato Scones It was my dads favorite food, which cant have helped, because he died of heart disease. Theyre little triangular, flat pancakes made with potatoes and flour and salt. You can get them in various sorts of places around Scotland. But the ones made by Blacks, to my mind, theyve never been beaten, because they have a peculiar glutinous quality. And each time Im in Scotland, I have one with about half a pound of butter.

Emma also mentions Stella McCartneys clothing, Young Frankenstein, and Edinburgh Festival Fringe. I love Emmas list. For me, potatoes are their own food group, so Im going to book a flight to Scotland as soon as Im done typing this. I also love that Emma is unreserved in her praise of Hannah, not only because I admire and enjoy them, but because its a gift to celebrate and support the work of people in your life. I also appreciate that Emma is honest about her own work choices, and how she sometimes will take on a project for the paycheck.
Im in complete agreement with Emmas mind bomb description of Hannah, who is now selling merchandise. As a professional tea-drinker, I really want this mug to add to my collection. Id mentioned that Id seen Douglas and loved it. I was in the third row, which meant that I could see Hannah clearly(!), and I spent a lot of time doubled-over, laughing. I also really want Emma to write a part for Hannah in her next movie, no matter how small. I cant imagine that shes not already trying to plan this. Id prefer a full-length badass-buddy comedy, but Ill take a five-minute scene-stealing cameo, too. Im not picky.

In 2018, we learned that Owen Wilson had impregnated another woman. Owen already has two sons with two women, and he had apparently dated a woman named Varunie Vongsvirates for several years, and she became pregnant. He asked for a paternity test, and he got it the little girl, Lyla, is his third child. When Lyla was born, Owen did not show up. He did not even contact Varunie. He signed the ?no contact? form or whatever, saying that he did not want to be involved in Lyla?s life whatsoever. I imagine he?s writing checks to Varunie, but he apparently has still never met his daughter. Varunie spoke about it to the Daily Mail:
Owen Wilsons ex-girlfriend Varunie Vongsvirates has begged the 50-year-old actor to get involved in their one-year-old daughter Lylas life. The 35-year-old told DailyMail.com that her former lover is not involved at all with their little girl and has never even met his youngest child.
Owen has never met Lyla. Never, Vongsvirates explained while on a rare night out in Los Angeles. He helps financially but it?s never been about that. Questioned about this, she added: Lyla needs a father. It?s ironic how [Owen] keeps getting these father roles, hes playing a father in his new movie, and hes never met his own daughter.
Wilson has played father Nate Pullman in 2017 movie Wonder, and has three new films due out next year. Varunie and Owen casually dated for five years before splitting up. He underwent a paternity test last year which confirmed he was the father. Asked if she had a message for her ex, Varunie said: You should see your daughter, shes incredible, youre really missing out. She looks just like you.
Varunie gave birth to their little girl on October 9, 2018 without Owen by her side. He reportedly checked the no visitation box in court in June and doesnt want any custody of her, a source told Us Weekly.

As I said in previous coverage, I believe that reproductive choices go both ways Owen clearly didn?t want this baby and Varunie did, so she had Lyla. He gives the child financial support, meeting his legal responsibility. But he chooses not to have anything to do with the kid and that?s his right. But we can still call him an ahole about it. It?s especially douchey because he IS involved in his sons? lives and has been involved in their lives since they were born. So why not with Lyla? Ugh.

Miley Cyrus?s vocal cords are messed up. It?s quite common with singers and vocal performers there?s a long list of singers who have needed vocal cord surgery, including John Mayer, Adele and Sam Smith. There?s apparently this one vocal cord specialist that all of the singers go to, but I don?t know if Miley used the same doctor. I do know that she had the vocal cord surgery last week and now she can?t speak for weeks, maybe even a few months. For Adele, it was like two full months, from what I remember, but Miley?s people are framing this as ?a few weeks of vocal rest.? So? Cody Simpson is trying to amuse Miley:
Miley Cyrus can count on Cody Simpson. The ?Slide Away? singer, 26, is currently recovering at home alongside the Australian singer, 22, after undergoing vocal cord surgery, a source tells PEOPLE.
?The surgery went well and she is resting up at home now,? the source says, noting that Cyrus ?has known for a while that she needed the surgery.? Part of Cyrus? recovery will include resting ?her voice for several weeks while her vocal cords heal,? the source adds. ?Any strain will prolong the healing.?
And just as Simpson supported Cyrus when she was hospitalized for tonsillitis last month, the Australian singer is keeping his girlfriend company. ?Cody is by her side. They are still doing well,? the source says. ?Miley seems very happy. Cody will make sure she isn?t bored while she recovers.?
In addition to sharing a clip of the pair dancing together after Cyrus? brother Braison Cyrus? wedding last week, Simpson appeared to make a reference to the surgery, sharing a black-and-white photo of the pair alongside the word ?success.?
When Cyrus was hospitalized for tonsillitis last month, she discovered a separate issue with her vocal cords, which she had unknowingly had for years, according to sources. After learning of the issue, Cyrus was told she would need to have surgery before the end of the year, and that the recovery process would include several weeks of silence. As a result of the issue, Cyrus, who has been working on new music, has needed to put recording and performing on hold. Another source close to Cyrus told PEOPLE she is ?doing great and will be back and better than ever early next year.?

While Miley exhausts me, I feel sorry for her about this, just like a feel sorry for all of those other singers who need vocal cord surgery. It must suck so hard to be in that position, especially with the horror stories about the surgery going wrong and maybe you?ll never be able to sing like you used to (see also: Julie Andrews). And? do you think that Cody and Miley will even make it to the end of Miley?s vow of silence? If anything, I would think a silent Miley would HELP her relationship. Mean but true.

As we discussed last week, the Duchess of Cambridge apparently had a ?private event? at the BBC following an appearance at a Remembrance event. Private event meaning that it ?counts? as some kind of event on her schedule, but there were no photos, only a confirmation that she did a meeting. Plus, some royal reporters promised that Kate would be announcing something big very soon. So what is this mysterious project?
Kate Middleton is thought to be lining up a secret TV project, after meeting with the director-general of BBC. The Duchess of Cambridge, 37, had a private talk with Tony Hall at the Broadcasting House, in London, on Thursday, the Mail reports. The meeting comes after her brother-in-law Prince Harry, 35, joined forces with Oprah Winfrey for a new show on Apple TV+.
It wouldnt be appropriate to discuss the content of the meeting, Lord Halls spokesman told the Mail. Kensington Palace explained Kate met him in her capacity as a patron of The Royal Foundation, meaning any project would be for charity.

When Harry signed up for the mental health thing with Oprah, the British tabloids went into meltdown because he was suddenly so ?Hollywood? and HOW DARE HE and he was breaking every single royal protocol. And when CopyKate does it, I imagine the headlines will be about how Savior Saint Kate?s BBC Brilliance. And we don?t even know what it is. Kate?s uncomfortable on-camera and making any kind of off-the-cuff remarks, so whatever it is? she?s either not going to be on camera, or it will be some kind of brief, rehearsed statement.

Here are some photos from last night?s People?s Choice Awards. You can see the list of winners here they really do not matter at all, but it looked like an okay awards show overall. Better organized than the Critics Choice Awards in any case. Gwen Stefani was one of the few ?A-listers? who actually walked the carpet, as opposed to simply showing up for a few minutes to pick up an award. Gwen walked the carpet with Blake Shelton, and they both picked up awards for their trouble. Gwen?s award was for some kind of ?Icon? something and Blake won for Country Artist of 2019. As fashionable and fashion-conscious as Gwen is, you would think that she would be able to get Blake into a real suit instead of jeans and a vest and blazer. Not so much. Gwen was decked out in Vera Wang, and Blake was? Blake. Also: when Blake won, he said on stage, ?Gwen, I love the sh-t out of you.? Which is sweet!
Pink wore Bella Freud and came with her husband and two kids.
Zendaya is too good for this show! Her dress is Christopher Esber. Very cute and appropriate.
Jenna Dewan in Monique Lhuillier, wow she?s far along. She looks great.
Sarah Hyland in Fausto Puglisi. YIKES on everything orange orange dress, orange lipstick, that?s so wrong.
And here?s Jennifer Aniston winning an award she didn?t walk the carpet. Her black dress was ODD.

SPOILERS for Last Christmas.
For some reason, I didn?t even know that Last Christmas came out last Friday. I saw Emilia Clarke promoting the film everywhere, but I guess I just thought it was really advanced promotion, because why would you release a Christmas movie weeks before? Thanksgiving? Anyway, it seems like I wasn?t the only one sleeping on Last Christmas it debuted on the weekend box office at #4, which would have been a notable bomb except that Doctor Sleep also bombed and that?s the bigger story for box office analysts. Besides, the reviews of Last Christmas were bad-to-horrendous, so no one was surprised when the film didn?t do well.
Interestingly enough, one of the other reasons why the film got such an icy reception from film-goers and critics is because? people figured out the plot twist months ago, when we first saw the trailer. Truly, people on Twitter and in blog comment sections figured it out. If you don?t want to know the big ?twist,? stop reading now?
SPOILERS BELOW?
The big twist is that Emilia?s character, the recipient of a heart transplant, finds out that Henry Golding?s character is the ghost of a man who died and she has his heart. Most people figured out that he was a ghost in the very first fking trailer. But still, Emilia Clarke is mad that people are ?spoiling? the twist:
Emilia Clarke is so over spoilers. And we?re not even talking about Game of Thrones. The actress opened up to IndieWire about her irritation with the internet?s obsession with trying to guess the twist in Last Christmas. Fans began an elaborate guessing game almost as soon as the trailer debuted in August. ?It?s bloody annoying. Frustrating,? Clarke said. ?It?s more complicated than people are guessing.?
Clarke defends the twist, noting that there was great care and nuance put into building it into the script. ?Emma [Thompson] and Greg [Wise] wrote this script together, but they sent the script to all of their friends and it was only ready when their friends didn?t see the twist coming and couldn?t guess until it happens, so that?s where it comes from,? she told IndieWire. ?It?s just frustrating.?
?When it comes to signing petitions to reshoot the last season of a very popular TV show, or whether it?s spoiling a goddamn Christmas rom-com, people are able to do something about that,? she reflected to IndieWire. ?Our world?s literally on fire, so I think that there?s a lot of things outside of people?s control, so when it comes to this kind of stuff, they can do something with it and want to. It?s done with so much fervor, it?s done with a huge amount of energy and all that is, is misdirected energy.?

I like her for defending her movie and defending Emma Thompson and Greg Wise?s script. But? the first line of George Michael?s ?Last Christmas? is ?Last Christmas, I gave you my heart.? SPOILER. I mean, it?s not Emilia?s fault. But truly, 90% of us saw this coming.
