I didn’t watch the Golden Globes last night, as part of my ongoing boycott to force the showto finally include Best Bikini Performance as an official award, so I can’t tell you whatKaty Perry was doing there, since last I checked, she wasn’t an actress. What I can tell you though is that, actress or […]

I haven’t done a post on Kirsten Dunst in years, but I remember that I always used to defend her when people would callher ugly orsnaggle-toothed or all those other mean names. Becausesure, Kirsten’s no beauty queen, but I’m not shallow like that. I mean, her rack clearly makes up for her so-so looks. So here’s […]

| Amber Heard in Gucci at the Golden Globes: lovely, shiny or unmemorable? | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

|
Amber Heard was SO SHINY. Was it sweat? Was it really hot inside the ballroom? Probably, because there were lots of women who looked sweaty and frazzled as the evening wore on. But Amber looked shiny on the red carpet. She looked shiny at the beginning of the night, when she presented. That?s why she was there ? to present. And she was the first person I thought of when Ricky Gervais said ?You are megastars with enormous talent. Most of you ? some of you just married well.? Amber?s drunk other half did not attend. Which is why she didn?t get much attention from the live red carpet outlets.
Amber wore this Gucci gown which? is okay. I don?t flat-out hate it, and I actually like that she?s giving us a new silhouette, a new style that we normally don?t see from her. I like that she wore a color too. But that?s it. This looks dated rather than ?vintage.? It looks like a bridesmaid?s gown from 1963. And she?s still a charisma vacuum.
Katy Perry was arguably one of the most famous women at the Golden Globes, but it really didn?t feel like that all, right? It was almost like she was undercover in a strange land where her pop stardom had no currency. Katy wore this bubble-gum Pink Prada, which photographs better than it looked in motion. That?s not on Katy ? she was trying to work this dress, but Prada?s crappy bust work failed her. While I?m happy that there wasn?t off-center darting all over the bust (a Prada ?signature?), this gown did make Katy?s girls look slightly deflated in many shots. Katy also told J-Law that she was wearing a Bump-It. Which is actually sort of cute, but I like big, fluffy hair.
Kate Bosworth in Dolce & Gabbana? whoa. She looks very severe. Let?s say that. The dress itself is boringly efficient, but her styling is just too severe. If I was styling her, I would have gone with softer makeup, softer hair and less ?hard-edged? dress. There?s something brittle about her look.

| Jaimie Alexander in emerald Genny at the Golden Globes: best look of the night? | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Sixteen hours ago, I really didn?t think I would be naming Jaimie Alexander as one of my favorite people on the Golden Globes red carpet, but here we are. She absolutely was one of my favorites, and I think it?s because I?m a sucker for a bold graphic fabric. Jaimie wore this Genny gown with a fantastic emerald green print. She arrived early and posed her ass off, as I would have too in this gown. You could tell that she loved it and that made the dress even better. Plus, she didn?t shy away from accessorizing with emerald jewelry (love it), nor did she shy away from leaving her collar unadorned. I like that. Everything was on point here.
For about an hour during the red carpet show, I thought Eva Green was Krysten Ritter. That?s not an insult to either lady, but before last night, I never realized how they look alike. Especially now that Eva is doing her hair like this. Eva wore Elie Saab, which is utterly boring. She shouldn?t wear beige/nude either.
Sophia Bush in Narciso Rodriguez. CB said this was boring, and it sort of is in photos. It was prettier in motion, where it sort of had a sophisticated, minimalist vibe. I think it was a decent choice for a TV girl.
Here?s Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan. She wore Zuhair Murad, a pretty if somewhat unremarkable dress. As soon as they hit the red carpet, people were just talking about Channing?s weird hair though.
Speaking of weird hair? Brad Pitt & Ryan Gosling didn?t walk the carpet, but word is that they were each other?s dates. They presented together and did a bit and it was funny. But I have a few questions. One, why was Brad so? ?tight? looking? He seemed especially scrubbed and wrinkle-free. Also: why was Brad so orange and Ryan was such a lovely, normal color?

| Cate Blanchett in Givenchy at the Golden Globes: Old West saloon lampshade? | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Cate Blanchett didn?t win last night. I was a little bit surprised by that, just because it feels like it?s been years since Cate went to an awards show and walked away empty-handed. It also feels like it?s been years since Cate went to an awards show and her gown wasn?t one of the most talked-about red carpet moments. Cate wore this pale Givenchy to the Globes last night, and if you had told me that it was Marchesa, I would have believed you. It bugs me that Cate chose this dress out of all the dresses she has access to. I mean, if she just wanted to phone it in, Armani would have sent her anything. And that?s what it felt like ? like she was just phoning it in sartorially. If I wanted to be unkind, I might compare the dress to an Old West saloon lampshade. There was some effort with the hair, and I really don?t like it. It?s too stiff?
Kate Winslet in Ralph Lauren. God, she annoys me. It?s not even her style or anything, although there?s something to be said for Winslet finally understanding what looks good on her, and just wearing versions of the same two dresses over and over like a red carpet uniform. She looked fine here. Annoying, but fine.
As I said on Twitter last night, Brie Larson has been quietly waging a very effective Oscar campaign. She?s going to all of the right events, shaking all the right hands, doing press and not making any waves. She?s not desperate. She?s not try-hard. She?s appreciative, kind, generous and sweet. She always remembers to say something nice about Jacob Tremblay, her young costar. No one has anything bad to say about her. If she continues to play it like this, I think she?ll be the one to beat for the Best Actress Oscar, quite honestly. Even Brie?s custom Calvin Klein gown was inoffensive. It wasn?t my favorite thing on the red carpet, in motion, but it photographs well and she looked very pretty. Well played, Brie!

| Maggie Gyllenhaal in Marc Jacobs at the Globes: blending into the background? | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, a presenter at last night’s Golden Globe Awards, walked the red carpet in a black and gold gown by Marc Jacobs. The dress featured floral appliqus and a bloom over her shoulder. The 38-year-old actress, who took home a Golden Globe of her own last year for her role in The Honorable Woman, accessorized with gold drop earrings, gold bangles and a gold clutch. Her makeup was subtle, except for her fuchsia lipstick (NARS Audacious Lipstick in Michiyo). It’s not my favorite look for Maggie. The dress is okay, her hair looks great, but the lipstick is too Pink for the gown. Her look did come in handy, I suppose, if she didn’t feel like being sociable at the HBO after party, as she seemingly blended into the background.

Joanne Froggatt, nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Limited Series or TV Movie for her role as Anna Bates on Downton Abbey, looked positively radiant in her Reem Acra gown. She may not have won an award this year, but her look is absolutely a winner. The periwinkle blue shade perfectly complements her hair and skin tone and I love the plunging neckline. Her hair and makeup are on point and I think it was a smart move that she opted no to wear a necklace. The Chopard Pink diamond earrings she’s wearing, valued at $1 million, were a perfect accessory, along with her sleek silver clutch.
Malin Akerman also hit the red carpet in Reem Acra. The 37-year-old actress similarly went necklace-less in a strapless silver beaded gown with a sweetheart neckline and a peplum detail. Hair-wise, Malin opted to slick back her locks with a sleek bun and wore dark silver nail polish. She accessorized with subtle diamond earrings and rings and a teeny silver clutch. (What can she possibly fit in that?) Initially, I wasn’t overly fond of this look, as I’m not a peplum fan, but once I saw the side view, I was won over. She pulls off this look and she looks like she’s having fun.
E! hostess Giuliana Rancic gave us 2 looks last night. For her pre-show red carpet coverage, she donned a red lace gown by Mac Duggal, accompanied by shoes by Manolo Blahnik and Forevermark diamond earrings and bracelet. She posted a picture on her Instagram with the caption “Golden Globes look #1? and I couldn’t agree more. It is #1 in my book. I love this dress. How better to cover the red carpet than to wear red? The color looks great with her tan skin and blond hair and I am a big fan of the high neck and long sleeves. I am coveting that bracelet as well.

| Kirsten Dunst vs. Emilia Clarke: who rocked the better black Valentino? | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

|
There was a surprising amount of GOTH DRAMA at the Golden Globes, which pleases the 14-year-old goth girl inside me. For my money, Kirsten Dunst in this Valentino was one of the best of the ?black gown? looks, if not one of the best gowns of the evening overall. This gown could have gone so wrong, but the fit was perfect, her body looked amazing and her styling was completely on-point. She had (arguably) the best smoky eye of the night. God, I really wanted her to win for Fargo. She was amazing in Fargo!!! Also: she had the best accessory with boyfriend Garrett Hedlund!
Emilia Clarke in Valentino, trying to bring the drama and the drama just was not brought. Instead, this whole thing is a f?king mess. It?s actually kind of funny? I mean, she?s wearing a gown that has a buttoned bib/dickie, for goodness sake. Emilia is a tiny woman ? as we?ve seen on Game of Thrones ? and this Valentino makes her look about 30 pounds heavier than she actually is. The built-in sheer cape is also an awful feature, although when I was a 14-year-old goth girl, I would have loved it.

| Eva Longoria in Georges Hobeika at the Globes: forgettable or fine? | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Eva Longoria was a presenter at last night’s Globes and she did a cute but kind of sad bit with Gina Rodriguez about being a Latina actress. Buzzfeed has a good recap of their intro, which included quips about how they’re always mistaken for other actresses. Eva said “I’m Eva Longoria, not Eva Mendes” and America said “I’m America Ferrera not Gina Rodriguez” and then they added “neither of us is Rosario Dawson” and then called each other “Salma” and “Charo.” The only comparison I have to admit I screw up is America Ferrera and Gina Rodriguez. I don’t think it’s cross racial identification bias so much as the fact that they’re both young and on TV, but that must be annoying and I have no idea what that’s like.
Eva was wearing this meh white Georges Hobeika gown with cap sleeves, a stupid cut out bow at the neckline, another dumb gold bow along the waist and floral appliques along the sides of the skirt. The flowers looked out of place, especially with the bows and especially on that otherwise sleek gown. I don’t get it.
I’m including Gina Rodriguez here, and I know she’s not America Ferrera! It’s just that Kaiser already covered America Ferrera because she was wearing the same canary yellow/mustard color as Jennifer Lopez. Gina was actually in navy blue, a color I only remember seeing on Kate Winslet. (And Julianne Moore if you count metallics.) This is Zac Posen and it’s way too ballgown for my taste. The bodice is great though, if only this had a more understated skirt. Gina came with her dad, which was cute.
Finally here’s Patricia Arquette, in black and white Paule Ka, with her artist boyfriend Eric White. It looks like if you undo that bow her boobs will pop out. Arquette was a presenter. She helped start the conversation about pay equality by bringing it up in her Oscars speech last year. It’s still very much in the news, with celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence continuing the conversation and Gervais joking about it at the Globes last night.

| Jennifer Lawrence in red Dior at the Golden Globes: flattering or fug? | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |
|
|

|
|
Controversial opinion: I hated Jennifer Lawrence?s Dior gown this year. I get that she?s the hottest actress out there and of course she?s paired with the most elite design house in the world, but I don?t think Dior has done her many favors over the years. This is a good example of that. My thought is that it was an either/or situation: Dior could have done the retro ?shift? top part and no cut-outs, or they could have done cut-outs without the shelf top. Putting both together on what amounts to column dress was a mistake. I also thought the neckline was too high on her, which was made worse by the diamond bib necklace ? she was going for ?long-necked swan? but it has an ostrich effect. One good thing: she didn?t fall! She also won Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical for Joy, beating her BFF and co-presenter Amy Schumer. Like Ricky Gervais said, it?s like neither of them has ever had a friend before.
As for Amy Schumer, she wore this Prabal Gurung. I mean? I ended up feeling sorry for a little bit? I don?t mean that in a condescending way at all. It was a big night for her, she was nominated for a Golden Globe for a film role ? her first film role! ? and she wanted to look Golden-Globe-appropriate. She didn?t want to look like a ?trainwreck.? I like that she took it seriously, it?s just that she veered too far and ended up looking dowdy. Like, I could see this on a GOP wife. So? I?ll give her credit for actually trying and taking it seriously, but next time, she should have some fun with it. Last thing: enough with the ?raunchy? act on the red carpet. We?ve already heard you say ?vagina? like a million times.

| Rachel McAdams in floral Lanvin at the Golden Globes: 80s wallpaper or pretty? | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Rachel McAdams was one of the only women in a floral gown last night. During the pre-red carpet coverage on E!, Giuliana and Brad talked about the trends to expect and they mentioned florals but acknowledged that it was a risky choice. I think McAdams sort-of pulls this off, there’s something really cool about the gown’s pattern close up, it’s like an abstract floral and has these big splotches of color that approximate flowers and greenery. I wish she had done something different with her hair though. The style is perfectly fine but the highlights look cheap. Maybe they’re for a role. It’s not like she’s going back to True Detective though, that series was run into the ground. (She’s filming Doctor Strange now, with Cumberbatch and Tilda Swinton.)

Also in Lanvin we have Julia Louis-Dreyfus in black strapless lace. She always seems to wear variations of this dress, but she knows what works for her and she’s not one to show off. Louis-Dreyfus was nominated for best performance by an actress in a comedy, which she’s won for the last four years in a row, for Veep. That award finally went to someone else, to newcomer Rachel Bloom for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
Melissa Benoist, 27, of Supergirl was another celebrity who wore a print on the red carpet, she’s in Monique Lhuillier and I saw some negative reviews of this gown on Twitter. (Tom and Lorenzo questioned whether it looked like wrapping paper or a bed sheet.) I sort-of liked it. It’s different, it’s flattering and there’s something whimsical about it. (I think it’s the birds, I’m partial to prints with birds.) She is definitely one to watch. Melissa was there with her husband of 10 months, actor Blake Jenner of Glee, 23.
Also in Monique Lhuillier is Leslie Mann. Lhullier can be hit or miss (although when they get a gown right it can be amazing) and this falls flat for me. It’s the pepto Pink color (I used that expression a lot but I have to credit The Fug Girls for reminding me of it on Twitter last night) and the fit is just off with that loose top and all the tulle around the skirt. Not cute.
Let’s end on a high note: Emmy Rossum in red formfitting Armani Prive. Holy crap this looks amazing. Emmy was kind of faltering in her red carpet style for a while, but she’s been bringing it lately and also wore Armani to the SAGs last year. Emmy is engaged to “Mr. Robot” creator, Sam Esmail, whose show won for Best TV Series: Drama. Ooh and I love her diamond wrap necklace. Jennifer Lopez had a similar necklace on last night and it was just to die for.
