Virginia Madsen is one of those actresses that I always appreciate. She?s been a steady, working actress for more than two decades, and for most of her career she?s played supporting parts in utterly forgettable films. But she?s a great character actress, and she shows up when I least expect it. Her latest film is The Haunting in Connecticut, which is based on the true story of Sara Campbell and her family, who move into a funeral home and, according to CNN, ?the family begins witnessing strange, supernatural activities?.
Madsen gave an interview to CNN, and she talks about ghosts. I have a pretty low threshold for creepy, supernatural stuff, so this interview freaked me out a little bit. While filming, Madsen and the cast stayed in a big, spooky hotel. And even though she says she doesn?t know if she believes in ghosts, she still had a talk with any spirits that might be in her hotel room:
The Haunting in Connecticut, which earned $23 million to finish No. 2 at the box office, emphasizes psychological horror over slasher film blood ‘n’ gore, which its audience apparently appreciated.
But Virginia Madsen, who plays Sara Campbell in the film, confessed that, while filming, fear was not just reserved for the screen.
“We all stayed in this big, old hotel which was kind of like the one in ‘The Shining,’ one of those turn-of-the- century big, old hotels,” Madsen told CNN.
“I had a little chat with my room. I said, ‘Just out of respect, if there are any entities around, I need to stay here, I have a lot of work to do, I have to sleep at night, so please leave me alone.’ ”
Yet, Madsen admitted, her belief in ghosts is not very strong.
“I do have an attraction to paranormal investigation and all those kinds of shows but I’m not sure if I really believe in ghosts,” she said.
“The Haunting in Connecticut” is based on the true story of Sara Campbell, a mother who moves her family into an old house in Connecticut in order to be closer to the hospital where her son, Matt (Kyle Gallner), receives cancer treatment. The house was once a funeral home and, shortly after their move, the family begins witnessing strange, supernatural activities.
“Something very powerful and very real happened to this family. Whether or not you believe it was some sort of demon or, you know, they’re manifesting it — whatever it is — it changed their lives,” Madsen said.
Madsen said the film, complete with ghosts, sances and creaking floorboards, is successful because it has all the elements of a good horror flick.
“The movie works … because it plays on our most basic childhood fears. ‘Something’s under the bed, something’s in the closet, something’s in the mirror.’ And all of us still have those same childhood terrors,” she said.
The desire to experience those same terrors and to forget about everyday life, Madsen added, draws people to the theaters at an older age.
“I like things that go bump in the night, and scary things that are fun,” she said. “That’s really what this movie really is. I think horror movies are so popular because times are especially hard and I think a horror movie more than any other kind of movie is a true escape … You’re forgetting about your life because you’re like, ‘Oh my God!’ “

I totally agree that the creaky floorboards and some unknown entity?s heavy breathing in an empty room would scare the hell out of me, much more than any inane bloodfest. One of the most terrifying scenes in any movie - especially when I was a kid - was that scene in Poltergeist, where Robbie?s clown disappears from the rocker and all you hear is the rustle of fabric. The Haunting in Connecticut sounds pretty good - but I will not be watching it alone. I wouldn?t be able to sleep for a week.

Hours after the two walked the red carpet separately, they met up for a midnight rendezvous on the back streets of London and ended up at a low-key bar for a long, quiet date!

Reese Witherspoon is so polite, it hurts. When asked about her Walk the Line co-star Joaquin Phoenix?s Unabomber-hobo-rapper act, she says that Joaquin ?knows what he?s doing? and that whenever his album comes out, she will ?pick it up.? So utterly classy.
Reese and Joaquin got along quite famously during the filming of Walk the Line. She even referred to him as ?honey? and ?sweetheart? during the promotional tour, although that?s most likely due to growing up in Nashville. Most proper Southern girls call people ?honey? - I do it all the time. It would be nice to think that Reese and Joaquin are still close, but Reese strikes me as a woman who doesn?t tolerate people who don?t have their acts together.
Reese Witherspoon is a Southern belle who probably likes Dolly Parton and thinks The Killers are risqu.
So the idea of her listening to rap music doesn’t really sit well in the believability stakes.
But the Oscar-winner reckons she will bop away to the bizarre album Joaquin Phoenix is set to release.
Having co-starred together in Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line, Reese obviously feels obliged to support the thespian-turned-artiste.
She said: “Sure, he’s great. He’s very musical obviously. He knows what he’s doing.?
“I’m not following his rap career but I’m sure his album, whenever it hits the stores, whenever it ‘drops’, I’m going to go pick it up.”
Joaquin decided to quit acting after shooting Two Lovers with Gwyneth Paltrow in favour of concentrating on music.

Yesterday, a hearing was held for the restraining order against Sam Lutfi. Lawyers argued that Lutfi is an “alleged extortionist” and said he threatened to release “unflattering information” about Jamie. Lutfi also is alleged to have given Britney a prepaid cell phone that Britney wanted. Lutfi’s sister testified that this was because Britney wanted out of her conservatorship and that she was afraid of her father who was causing her “emotional distress.”
Lawyers also argued that the supposed leaked voicemail Britney left was not Britney at all and may have been edited.
At the end, everything was ten times more confusing and Britney’s brain really hurt. And Britney really wanted to know where her lollipop was.

We told you earlier this week about Britney Spears’ supposed fling with one of her dancers. The girl sure does have a weakness for them, doesn’t she? Well, now OK! Magazine is reporting that Brit’s heart still belongs to only one dancer. And no, it’s not Justin Timberlake.
Looks like the singer is in love again ? but insiders say it?s not her dancer whom she desires: Britney has fallen for her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, and is trying to rebuild their broken family.
In fact, she?s even going so far as fighting to steal him from his new girlfriend, Victoria Prince, and trying to make him jealous by flaunting her love affairs in public.

With Kevin along on the tour to take care of their sons, Preston, 3, and Jayden, 2, the former spouses are spending more time together than they have since their November 2006 split.

Wow, that’s real mature. Does that “make him jealous” technique ever actually work? If all the reports of Brit and K-Fed getting back together were true, they’d be the new Shanna Moakler and Travis Barker.
I don’t doubt for a second that Britney wants him back. But I would be shocked if Kevin felt the same. He pretty much got plowed over by the Crazy Train Express. Sure, he got two adorable kids and a big fat payday out of it, but now he will forever be known - perhaps unjustly- as the loser who made Britney a nutjob. I suspect that Brit was unstable before K-Fed came into the picture. And even now that she’s doing better, she doesn’t know the first thing about being in a normal relationship. Look at her boyfriends since K-Fed - all wrong! Why would he want to go back to that?
Still, it’s good that they can get along and form a unified front for the sake of their children. It’s so important for children of divorced families to know that their parents can work together to raise them. These kids have been through a lot already.

One of Hollywood’s coolest couples has been having a rough time, but if new reports are to be believed, they could be on the mend. “X-Files” star David Duchovny and his wife Tea Leoni, who seemed rock-solid after more than 10 years together, were separated last year after reports that David had checked into rehab for sex addiction. There were also rumors that Tea was seeking comfort in the arms of her co-star, Billy Bob Thornton. It was a sad situation, especially for the couple’s two children. But recently, David and Tea have been spotted out together, holding hands and seeming very close again. And now, The National Enquirer is reporting that not only have the couple reunited, but they’re planning to have another baby.
“Can you say bundle of joy for David Duchovny and Tea Leoni?” say pals.
The separated couple, who’ve been married for more than a decade, recently reconciled during a spring break getaway to the Caribbean island of Mustique with their two children.
David and Tea have been working on fixing their broken relationship for some time, a source revealed. But with David’s history of sex addiction, there were trust issues they had to resolve.
“Little by little they’ve managed to work through them,” continued the source. “And the fact they still see each other often in New York City helped.”
David and Tea have maintained separate apartments close to each other in Manhattan, where they split time with their kids, Madelaine, who turns 10 this month, and Kyd, 6.
“There were still a lot of feelings between Tea and David,” said the source. “They never actually filed for formal separation - I don’t think they ever wanted the marriage to end.
“It just took a romantic holiday with their kids to finally bring them to their senses.”
David knows that Tea has always wanted another child. And now that she’s 43, David, 48, knows there’s no time to waste.
“To win her back, he played his trump card,” said the source. “He promised if she were not pregnant in a year they would look into adoption.”
Tea took David back “on probation” last fall, says the source, but wasn’t convinced they’d be able to get past their problems.
“Tea wanted proof that David’s number one priority is family,” added the source. “And with him committing to expanding the brood, Tea feels like she can trust him again.”

I have always liked this couple - they seem so cool and sexy. I was so bummed when I heard they were breaking up. But I have seen the recent photos of them hanging out, and they really do look like they’re still in love. I don’t know about the baby thing, but I sure hope they can make it work. Having a baby to save a relationship is never a good idea. Make sure the marriage is solid again first!

It seems a little of out of line to tell your mother what she can eat in your presence. Or anyone, really. It?s one thing not to keep or serve foods you can?t eat when you’re in your own home. The constant temptation can be too much to handle for some people. But to tell your mom she can?t order what she wants at a restaurant? That?s a bit extreme.
I?m a constant dieter so I completely understand how hard it is to be around the foods you can?t eat. But I tend to remove myself from the situation ? like not go out to eat at restaurants and do something else with the person. It?s so unfair to say ?I can?t eat this so you can?t either.? I will admit Jessica looks amazing? though I?m guessing she probably eats a lot of meals alone.

Everyone said that adding a fourth judge to the mix on “American Idol” was a bad idea - and now that is looking to be true. Sources say the addition of Kara DioGuardi, a songwriting veteran with hundreds of hit tunes to her credit, has stirred up some bad mojo with the show’s existing judges. And Kara also has a hard time taking criticism from the live studio audience, including family members of the contestants.
Here’s what you didn’t see on last night’s American Idol:
CLASHING WITH CONTESTANTS
While judge Kara DioGuardi critiqued contestant Megan Joy’s performance of “Turn Your Lights Down Low,” her brother yelled out, “Broken record!” It startled the judge.
During the break, DioGuardi approached him and the rest of her family. At first, she thought he was yelling “broken record” at his sister. When Joy’s brother told her the comment was aimed at her, DioGuardi was taken aback. “I am? Why?” she asked. He then said “packaged artist” could be her “packaged phrase.” Upset, she stormed off with her bodyguards.
She approached Joy’s brother again during the next break, tapping him on the shoulder. She then said to the people around them, “Can you believe what he said to me?”
It wasn’t her only miffed moment. After DioGuardi and low-scoring contestant Anoop Desai clashed over his rendition of Usher’s “Caught Up,” the show went to commercial and DioGuardi made an annoyed face as she turned away to walk backstage. She then greeted guest Neil Patrick Harris (who was with his beau David Burtka) as he waved wildly from the audience.
GETTING THE COLD SHOULDER FROM SIMON
DioGuardi recently complained on the Ellen DeGeneres Show that the other judges “talk about the clothes” more than the “technical” aspects of a singer’s performance. But when contestant Allison Iraheta walked on stage in a poofy red dress and black leggings, DioGuardi ended up commenting on her look. When Simon Cowell remarked that Iraheta resembled “something out of The Addams Family,” DioGuardi leaned over and said to him off-mic, “So, you agree with me!” Cowell refused to acknowledge her.
Throughout the show, Cowell and Paula Abdul (who was “upset” over DioGuardi’s comments to DeGeneres, says a source) bonded, talking and whispering frequently. After contestant Scott MacIntyre sang, the two cut off DioGuardi’s critique by walking backstage with their arms around each other.

Personally, I like Kara’s insight on the show. She’s the only judge who is currently working successfully in the music industry. When was the last time Paula Abdul was relevant as a recording artist? I do agree with her that the judges are way too focused on the contestant’s images and not the vocals or talent. I don’t think the judges should be allowed to say anything once the competition reaches the point where the audience votes. First of all, their opinions cease to matter once the voting part of the show is involved. And second of all, they don’t really have anything constructive to say most of the time anyway.

Brangelina will be saying ?bonjour? to the South of France for the third year in a row. Quentin Tarantino?s WWII film Inglourious Basterds has been accepted at the Cannes Film Festival, and the film will be appearing in competition for the Palm d?Or (like, Best Picture of the festival). Brad Pitt is expected to show up to shill the film, most likely with Angelina there to hold his hand. People has more:

The star’s WWII action film, the intentionally misspelled Inglourious Basterds [sic], has been invited to this year’s May 13-24 Cannes Film Festival, and the film’s director, Quentin Tarantino, has not only accepted the call, Variety reports, he’s agreed to allow the picture into competition.
The trade paper further reports that Tarantino has promised the Weinstein Company and Universal that his Dirty Dozen-style adventure about Jewish-American commandos battling Nazis will be ready in May. The movie is scheduled to open to the public Aug. 21.
A Cannes premiere ? and possible prize ? helps launch word of mouth. Basterds will mark Tarantino’s fifth time out in Cannes ? but only his second time at vying for the fest’s top prize, the Palme d’Or. His Pulp Fiction took that one in 1994.
In recent years, Pitt has become a regular at the world’s largest film festival. After turns for Troy and Ocean’s 13, he appeared on last year’s red carpet alongside partner Angelina Jolie who was there in support of her movies Changeling and Kung Fu Panda.

Actually, People had the title spelled ?Bastards? but I still think Tarantino is going with ?Basterds?. The film already has an American release date - in August of this year. They seem to want to make the film into a late summer blockbuster. It might work… both Pitt and Tarantino have devoted followings and the film?s supposed to be really, really violent. Perfect for teenage boys… and their mothers?

Bravo, Lifetime and the Weinstein Company have reached a deal on Project Runway. Finally! I?m going through withdrawals. The details are still a bit sketchy, but People Magazine is confirming that the Weinstein company has basically paid off Bravo/NBC Universal to ship the valuable Project Runway property over to Lifetime.
The sixth season that will appear on Lifetime - reportedly this summer - has already been filmed, even though Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn had no idea if it would actually air anywhere. People has more:

?The Weinstein Company will pay NBCU for the right to move Project Runway to Lifetime. All of the parties are pleased with the outcome,? the networks say in a joint statement.
Changing gears, the upcoming season of Project Runway relocated from New York to Los Angeles, though it will continue to be hosted by Heidi Klum and judged by Michael Kors and Nina Garcia. Tim Gunn will also mentor the designers. As usual, the finale was shot during fashion week - this year, in February.
But ongoing legal disputes prevented producers from revealing any information about the cast, and the three final collections were shown blindly, with their designers unidentified. International Herald Tribute editor Suzy Menkes acted as the guest judge at the show.
In addition, sources close to the show have told PEOPLE that Project Runway?s season 6 will utilize ?local resources? in Los Angeles ? namely focusing more on Hollywood ? and will feature appearances by Christina Aguilera, Eva Longoria Parker and Rebecca Romijn.
Project Runway producer Harvey Weinstein expressed his appreciation for the resolution to the legal battle. ?I want to personally congratulate Jeff Zucker and NBCU on their success in the litigation and thank Jeff for resolving this in a professional manner,? he said in a statement.
According to Lifetime, the network will also air a companion series, Models of the Runway, alongside Project Runway. ?All of us at Lifetime are thrilled to move forward with Heidi, Tim, Nina, Michael, The Weinstein Company and the entire Project Runway team,? network president and CEO Andrea Wong said in a statement. ?We are proud to add these shows to our growing slate of original programming.?

This deal is the product of more than a year of legal wrangling. It all started when Harvey Weinstein (executive producer of PR) thought he could get more money from Lifetime. Lifetime jumped at the chance to own the valuable ratings smash and cult-like favorite. Bravo/NBC was like, ?Oh no you didn?t!? and thus, lawsuits were born.
It?s also wonderful to see that the deal includes Tim Gunn, who is basically the real star of the show. I like Heidi and everything, but I love Tim. Last season?s weak contestants almost killed me, but I was still hooked, so it?s good to know I?ll be getting my fix this summer!

Madonna?s lawyer is laying down the law. Alan Chinula is representing Madge for the adoption of Mercy James. The final decision will be rendered by a Malawian judge on Friday, most likely. But to Chinula, there are no worries. He says ?I don’t see any law in Malawi that can stop this adoption? and that Mercy?s uncle ?has already signed off the consent forms, and Madonna counter-signed them.? So I guess that?s that. Why even show up for the Friday court date?
Madonna’s lawyer Alan Chinula tells Usmagazine.com he is confident that the judge will allow the singer, 50, to adopt 4-year-old girl Chifundo “Mercy” James at Friday’s hearing.
“I am not sleeping sleepless nights over this,” Chinula tells Us. “I don’t see any law in Malawi that can stop this adoption.”
On Tuesday, a rep for Madonna confirmed for the first time that the singer is adopting the girl, whose unwed 18-year-old mother died soon after she gave birth. Chinula tells Us the girl’s uncle, Peter Baneti, “has already signed off the consent forms, and Madonna counter-signed them.”
“She just has to wait to hear from me when I get the result” on Friday, he says. She is not required to attend the hearing, Chinula adds, “although she can attend if she so chooses.”
Several non-governmental organizations have called the Human Rights Consultative Committee, slamming Madonna’s adoption attempt because the groups feel the child should be taken care of by her own family.
The organizations also accuse the singer of using her wealth and celebrity status to bend Malawi’s adoption laws. (The singer, who adopted David Banda in 2006, has not followed regulations that stipulate that prospective parents must undergo an 18- to 24-month assessment period in Malawi before adopting.)
But Chinula tells Us that law is over 50 years old and “archaic.”
“Laws must be dynamic,” he says. “They must move with current trends.”

There are several daily updates happening on Madonna throughout the week. Some of them are just tabloid ?reports? coming from people who have literally nothing to do with Madonna, Mercy or Malawi. But some stories are interesting, like this one from The Telegraph. Apparently Madge had been e-mailing her friends about the adoption. One of these friends, Ben Fellows, released Madge?s e-mail to The Daily Mirror (although this story is via The Telegraph). Madge told Fellows that she was ?going to jump through hoops to get [Mercy]?. Madge also wrote ?Let the storm commence.? It?s commencing, Gristle. You don?t have to beg for it quite so much.
[In] an email to her friend Ben Fellows, a British film-maker, she said that the criticism over her plans would not stop the adoption, adding: “Let the storm commence”.
Mr Fellows, who was himself adopted, told the Daily Mirror: “Once Madonna has put her mind to something, she achieves it - and this adoption is no different.?
“She told me she thought it was very important that David had a sister, she had unconditional love to give another child and was going to jump through hoops to get her.?
“She knew exactly what she was walking into. She was well aware that people would start sniping about it. She sent me an email just before she left for Malawi and signed it off ‘Let the storm commence!’”

Here?s what I don?t get - why does Madonna drown us in sanctimony about all of her latest issues, when her goal was and is solely to get publicity? If she really wants the attention so badly (and I think by now it?s clear that she does), why pull the bait and switch after the fact? Perhaps I?m not explaining my point very well, so let me take a step back.
Part of the problem I had with Madonna after David Banda?s adoption was that she went on Oprah and defended herself and her actions in a very sanctimonious, holier-than-thou way. She basically said that all she cared about was adopting a needy child, and that nothing else mattered to her. But clearly, all of the publicity and media exposure means a lot to her too, or else she would try to act in a quieter (legal) way that would benefit her children, or the children she?s trying to adopt.
It just feels like she saw all of the attention (so much of it negative) that she got with David Banda?s adoption, and is really trying to willfully mimic so many of the same mistakes with Mercy?s adoption. Her attitude is cavalier, craven and desperate.

Scarlett Johansson is Photoshopped to Barbie-levels of body proportion and sexual accessibility in the new ads for champagne maker Moet & Chandon. Scarlett has lost some weight recently. She was seen looking thin at a Moet & Chandon party last week and was overheard talking about her diet. This is after Scarlett said in February that she’s never dieted or gone to a gym in her life. She’s not this thin, though, and it just looks fake and overdone, especially in that shot of her reclining on the couch. Her legs look like toothpicks.
Scarlett is the first celebrity spokesperson for the champagne house. Moet’s president Frdric Cumenal said in a speech at the party last week “Scarlett Johansson was the obvious choice as our ambassador because she, like Moet, has a magical story to tell and makes people dream. She is a true icon of celebration - refreshingly spontaneous, generous, glamorous and she lives life to the fullest both on-screen and off.”
I like Scarlett and think she’s sexy enough, but these ads featuring women with vacant come-hither stares have become passe. She looks like an object instead of a real person. Many people commenting on The Huffington Post are saying that her makeup is overdone and the airbrushing is too much. She’s still pretty although it all comes off as a bit plastic.

Hardly a week goes by when one of Lindsay Lohan’s parents doesn’t do something to remind us how she was coached from a young age to achieve her unique level of wasteful, underemployed infamy. Dina Lohan’s “why are they censoring me” Twitter account turned out to be a phony, but many people were fooled into believing it was her because she’s not the sharpest tool.
Dina’s latest stunt involves some stupidity mixed with a sense of entitlement and a dose of poor mothering. She tried to get her youngest daughter Ali, 15, into a nightclub. When she was turned away she used the “don’t you know who I am?” line.
When a 46-year-old mom wants to take her daughters out for a special night, a Hollywood nightclub might seem a curious choice. Not so for Dina Lohan, who took Lindsay, 22, and Ali, 15, to Villa on March 25, Us Weekly reports.
?Do you know who I am?? Dina protested when they were turned away at the door because of Ali?s age.
?You?re making a huge mistake. Huge!? Lindsay added.

Do you think there is any hope for Lindsay to escape the pervasive, lifelong negative influence of her parents? Could she go to therapy and/or another part of the country and stop shopping long enough to have a fulfilling life? She’s probably spent enough in the past few years to fund her entire family’s retirement comfortably, including her brother and sister. Instead all she’s left with are heaps of designer clothing, handbags, hair extensions, a tumultuous relationship, and a tan that’s slightly less orange than it was last year. Is that any more hollow than the rest of our lives due to sheer volume of wasted resources?
You hear stories about moms trying to get 15 year-olds into nightclubs and you just want to protect their children. If it’s too late for Lindsay, maybe there’s still hope for Ali. She’s probably been in plenty of other bars that haven’t turned her away though.
