Scarlett Johansson is not covered in teflon, but she has an uncanny knack for giving terrible interviews, saying wildly offensive things and just moving on like nothing happened. And almost everyone moves on too. Is it some kind of hot-woman privilege or is it specific to ScarJo? Well, Scarlett is currently promoting her directorial debut, Eleanor the Great. Scarlett directed June Squibb in the lead, for a movie about a woman who pretends to have survived the Holocaust so she can make friends in a New York-based support group. The Telegraph spoke to Scarlett about the script, how the project almost fell apart and how she still supports Woody Allen.
She lost a major backer a month before filming: One of Johansson?s financial backers got in touch with a stipulation regarding the script. The gist of it? Love the film, Scarlett, but we?re not so keen on the whole Holocaust thing. Can we have the character lie about something else? The demand came ?after months of preparatory work?, Johansson recalls, despairingly. ?I mean, if they?d said ?I?ll only back this if you shoot in New Jersey,? or ?We need to get this done by the spring?, then that would have been one thing. But they were objecting to what the film actually was. It had to be about what happens when someone gets caught in the worst lie imaginable; if not the Holocaust, then what could it be? They offered no alternative. It was just, ?This is an issue.??
Suing Disney over a contractual pay dispute: The studio settled two months later for a reported $40m, stating that it was already looking forward to working with Johansson again ?on a number of upcoming projects?. What does she think of her colleagues? resounding silence? ?I mean, it would be great to have more support from the community and my peers ? vocally, publicly ? on certain issues that affect the entire industry. It?s always helpful to have more voices, you guys!? Having said that, even in cases where she is pretty much a lone voice, speaking out ?can still be really effective?. The Marvel pay spat, she adds, was a good example. ?As we moved from the model of theatrical box-office bonuses to understanding how that translated to streaming, it had just become this nebulous thing, with no guidelines around it. So to be able to impact that moves everything in the right direction. But yes, I would welcome more support.?
Whether supporting Woody Allen affected her career: ?I guess it?s hard to know. You never know what the domino effect is, exactly. But my mom always encouraged me to be myself, [to see] that it?s important to have integrity, and stand up for what you believe in. At the same time, I think it?s also important to know when it?s not your turn. I don?t mean that you should silence yourself. I mean sometimes it?s just not your time. And that?s something I?ve understood more as I?ve matured.?
How Hollywood is still tough for women: ?I think it?s still tough. There have always been great roles in Hollywood for women. But the standards are tough. In general, there?s so much more expected of female actors. If a female actor had experienced, let?s say, a huge addiction, or a public fall from grace, the road to getting back for them is almost impossible to pave, right? Whereas for men, it?s just another dramatic twist in the story, and then it?s on to the comeback. For men, it can be almost heroic. But for women, it?s like you just disappear.?
Scarlett actually recorded real Holocaust survivors? stories for the film: Given the nature of Eleanor?s lies ? which, smartly, are never actually shown; the camera always cuts back to Bessie?s own, truthful testimony ? Johansson wanted to make sure she didn?t err in matters of taste, or worse. She seems especially proud that each member of the film?s support group is played by someone who, in real life, would have every right to be there, at a time when only around 245,000 survivors are still alive worldwide, and misinformation and outright denial is on the rise. They were, she says, ?an amazing group. But it took work to identify people who were both willing and able to participate.?
[From The Telegraph]
I think the Woody thing has become so distasteful/toxic to the point where people don?t even want to acknowledge when an actor has previously supported Woody. When Diane Keaton passed, there were some references to her defense of Woody, but most people were like ?eh, it?s complicated.? Same with Cate Blanchett, Penelope Cruz and several others who never really cut ties or apologized for working with him. I?m actually surprised Scarlett even bothered to comment, but as I said she?s made of teflon to a certain extent.
The Disney stuff was a rare moment when I was 100% on her side. Disney fought back against her lawsuit in a really wild, sexist, patronizing way, and Scarlett got some really sympathetic coverage for standing up to Hollywood?s Goliath. Disney?s initial misread of the situation was a huge reason why they settled with Scarlett within a few months as well.

Here are some photos of Scarlett Johansson in London on Tuesday, doing a photocall and premiere for Jurassic World Rebirth. Scarlett has been trying to get a role in the Jurassic universe for years (decades, even). She really, really wanted to be part of this franchise and I think it?s cool that it worked out for her I?m pretty sure she has some cool scenes with dinosaurs. She seems to have enjoyed working with Jonathan Bailey in particular I think all of Jonathan?s costars love him, honestly, especially the girls. Mahershala Ali wore Etro at the premiere he has better style than all of his costars combined.
At the photocall, Scarlett wore a Schiaparelli, and at the premiere, Scarlett wore a Vivienne Westwood. Sigh? the Schiaparelli is far from the worst look I?ve seen from that house, but it?s still not great. It?s also not summery in the least it is the middle of June, why is Scarlett styled like an 80s Wednesday Addams? The Westwood is much better a good design, flattering, well cut. This color would have looked gorgeous on a woman with darker coloring. On Scarlett, the color of the dress and her terrible makeup are in competition to see who can make her look the most washed-out.
Real talk: in my opinion, Scarlett has never been a fashion girl or known for her style. Her style is okay-to-fine much of the time, but there are some notable fashion flops in her style journey, and those flops have significantly lowered expectations along the way. No one ever says ?I can?t wait to see what Scarlett wears.? All that being said, Scarlett has been a pleasant surprise in the past year or so with her red carpet appearances. She?s hit that point in her life where she knows what styles work best on her figure and I also think she?s working with better tailors/couturiers. Now she needs a better makeup artist, because? yikes. When your MUA is like ?and now for some pale Pink eyeshadow,? it?s time for a new person.

Last night, Scarlett Johansson premiered her directorial debut, Eleanor the Great, at the Cannes Film Festival. Scarlett directed June Squibb and Erin Kellyman, and they were both there for the premiere. Scarlett?s husband Colin Jost also came out for the premiere. Let?s talk about Colin?s fashion first Colin seems to do a lot of chest and arm work, which is great, but that means he looks sort of foolish wearing a slim-cut double-breasted suit or tuxedo? He should either go with a slim-cut single-breasted suit (if his goal is showing off his chest and arms) or go with a boxy double-breasted jacket. As for Scarlett, she wore a custom Prada in a pale blue. As I went through the photos, I looked at all of the angles of the gown it really is tailored beautifully for Scarlett?s figure. Her red lipstick pops too.
Jodie Foster skipped her usual Armani and went with Loewe to the ?Vie Prive? premiere. I?m not a fan of any of it??
Georgina Chapman and Adrien Brody were out in Cannes last night as well. I?m still mad that he won his second Oscar, and I?m still mad about his long-ass speech. Georgina wore an archive Marchesa? remember when half the girls at any award show wore dresses like this? It?s giving me nostalgia.
Eva Herzigova wore one of the funniest looks of the festival this is Balenciaga. I?m calling it the ?boob bell dress.?

A few months ago, Scarlett Johansson?s lawyers threatened a lawsuit against Sam Altman and his company OpenAI for using her voice for its virtual assistant after she turned them down. Think Siri or Alexa but Scarlett?s voice when you use ChatGPT. Altman was an a-hole who apparently doesn?t know the meaning of the word no and the product came out using a voice that sounded suspiciously like Scarlett. At the time, people were like, ?Bold move, bro, going after the woman who sued Disney and won.?
OpenAI ended up taking that voice option down, but ScarJo remains pissed off about the whole thing. I don?t blame her! In an interview with the New York Times, she talked a bit of sh-t about Altman, saying he would make a good Marvel villain ?with a robotic arm.? She also spoke out a bit more about what happened with her Disney lawsuit, which was over the company violating its contract by releasing Black Widow in theaters and on streaming platforms, when it was supposed to be exclusively in theaters. Turns out, Scarlett has no ill feelings towards the company itself. She blamed it all on their leadership and Im assuming she means then-CEO Bob Chapek.
?I felt I did not want to be at the forefront of that,? Johansson said about turning down OpenAI?s original request. ?I just felt it went against my core values. I don?t like to kiss and tell. He came to me with this and I didn?t tell anybody except my husband.?
?I also felt for my children it would be strange. I try to be mindful of them,? Johansson added.
In the Times interview with Maureen Dowd, Johansson calls AI-generated deepfakes a ?dark wormhole you can never climb your way out of.?
?Once you try to take something down in one area, it pops up somewhere else,? she said. ?There are other countries that have different legislation and rules. If your ex-partner is putting out revenge, deepfake porn, your whole life can be completely ruined. I think technologies move faster than our fragile human egos can process it. And you see the effects all over, especially with young people. This technology is coming like a thousand-foot wave.?
Johansson says she initially turned down OpenAI?s offer to be a voice of the ChatGPT system but when the company went forward with the plan anyway, the actor turned her lawyers loose.
While Johansson?s feelings for Altman and OpenAI don?t seem to have softened much in the past few months, her attitude toward Disney seems to be on sturdied ground these days. The Johansson-Disney dispute, which preceded the incident with OpenAI, stemmed from Disney?s decision to release her Marvel film Black Widow in both theaters and steaming via Disney+ Premier Access during the Covid days of July 2021. Their contract had maintained that the film would be released exclusively in theaters.
During the legal battle that followed, Disney said Johansson had a ?callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,? and revealed her $20 million salary.
But Johansson insisted that the streaming plan would cost her millions of dollars in backend compensation. ?I don?t hold a grudge,? Johansson says now. ?I think it was just poor judgment and poor leadership at that time. It just felt very unprofessional to me, the entire ordeal. And honestly, I was incredibly disappointed, especially because I was holding out hope until, finally, my team was like, ?You have to act.??
[From Deadline]
I wonder how much her blaming Chapek is from personal reflection and how much of it is wanting to still work with Disney in the future. I really liked Black Widow and think that ScarJo and its cast got screwed over by it being released so long after The Avengers: Endgame came out. It put BW so out of sync with the MCU timeline. That said, Scarlett wasn?t wrong that Disney?s decision violated her contract. If the roles were reversed, Disney would have sued her.
I remember how angry directors and actors were about the decision to make movies available on streaming at the same time they were in theaters. As a customer, I was really grateful for the move because we were in the middle of a global pandemic and it was awesome to have the option to watch new movies at home. Putting movies on streaming and charging people to watch it was a great solution for studios and viewers but sh-tty for anyone whose contracts were tied to backend ticket sales and profits. We saw the lack of revenue from streaming content play such a huge role in the SAG strikes last year. Hopefully their new post-strike contracts will ensure that this wont happen to them again.

Here are some photos from the New York premiere of Wes Anderson?s Asteroid City last night. I look forward to all of Wes Anderson?s films, although I rarely see them in the theater. I?ve heard critics say Asteroid City is Anderson?s ?best film in the past decade,? which is completely strange because his last four films (The French Dispatch, Isle of Dogs, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Moonrise Kingdom) have been absolute masterpieces. If anything, the critical acclaim Asteroid City got at Cannes makes me question if I?ll enjoy this one.
In any case, the stars of the ensemble film came out for the premiere. Scarlett Johansson (arguably the ?star? of this film?) wore Carolina Herrera. Is it just me or has Scarlett?s styling been ?off? for years? Like, something is always going wrong the dress wasn?t properly tailored or her hair is a mess or her makeup sucks. At this premiere, I think the dress was wrong. The flower on the bust makes it look like she has a third boob.
Other stars?Margot Robbie wore Schiaparelli, an okay look which? I mean, it could be better, but at least it?s not another boring Chanel. Maya Hawke wore Prada I think she?s trying to cultivate a ?quirky fashionista? persona and I don?t hate that. We need more quirky fashionistas. I?m also including photos of Hope Davis, Adrien Brody and Georgina Chapman (they?re still happening), Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Rupert Friend in palazzo pants, plus Wes Anderson and Jason Schwartman.

Wes Anderson?s latest film, Asteroid City, will be released theatrically in mid-June. The film got its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and if you ask me, Cannes should have made this the opening night film (instead of that Johnny Depp catastrophe). Wes Anderson always has star-studded ensemble casts and this one is no different. The film stars (in no particular order) Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Steve Carrell, Jeffrey Wright, Adrien Brody, Hope Davis, Maya Hawke, Edward Norton, Margot Robbie, Bryan Cranston, Rupert Friend, Hong Chau, Rita Wilson and like twenty other actors you would recognize. You can see the trailer here (it?s charming, as all of Wes Anderson?s films are).
Here are some photos from the Cannes premiere last night. Scarlett was there with her husband Colin Jost, and a very strange Prada dress. I?m aghast at her styling too bright orange-red lipstick with this pale Pink dress? Ugh. Maya Hawke also wore Prada, and if you ask me, both women?s dresses have severe darting issues. Also: Adrien Brody is still with Georgina Chapman, and she was there at the premiere.
Other notables at the premiere: Julia Garner in a vibrant emerald Gucci and Brie Larson in a feathered Chanel. I?m so disappointed in Brie?s Cannes fashion. When she was appointed to the Cannes jury, she must have just called up Chanel and asked them for whatever they had laying around. That?s what it looks like she?s wearing the dregs which no one else wanted. Julia looks amazing.

Scarlett Johansson was on The Drew Barrymore Show promoting her new skincare line, The Outset. I didn?t realize that Drew and Scarlett are such good friends. Drew said they bonded during He?s Just Not That Into You and have stayed close since. It made for a fun interview because it was equal parts interview and catching up. One of Drew?s favorite topics to talk about is love, so she brought up Scarlett?s relationship with Colin Jost right away. Both Drew and Scarlett are six-time SNL hosts, going back long before Scarlett and Colin got together. Drew asked how things turned romantic with Colin. Scarlett said it was timing, because all the previous times she met him she?d been in a relationship. But in 2017 she finally saw him with new, available eyes.
Scarlett also talked about how she met Colin several times before they finally started dating in 2017.
?It was just the timing was good. When we met, the timing was right,? she said. ?He?s a very ? I think ? a cute guy, but the other times that I was there, I was in a relationship and I was not [looking]. This time, it was the timing was right. He looked differently to me because I was available.?
?I?ve definitely been in relationships where the timing was not right, and I also think you have to recognize when it?s not the right person, but sometimes it?s a good person but the timing is off, and it?s important to be open to that too,? she added.
[From Just Jared]
This makes sense to me. Plenty of couples were friends for years before they started dating and it usually has something to do with their availability. Scarlett told Drew her first time hosting SNL was Colin?s first year writing for them. That was back in 2006, when Scarlett was dating Josh Harnett. Her appearances before 2017 line up with her husbands Ryan Reynolds and Romain Dauriac. She admited she thought Colin was cute, but that there?s a difference between finding someone attractive and being attracted to them. Like Scarlett said, that filter is usually if you are available to date them.
Getting back to Drew and Scarlett?s relationship, there was a sweet moment at the end when they were doing the Final Five (when Drew asks her guest five random questions). Drew challenged Scarlett to cry on command ? which she did! After, though, Scarlett lauded Drew for everything she?d done with her show and Drew admitted she?d gotten very emotional when Scarlett walked out because she was proud to show it off to Scarlett. It was a nice moment between two women who clearly care for and want good things for each other.

Last night, Scarlett Johansson was honored at the American Cinematheque Awards. She was this year?s recipient of the award, and she brought her husband Colin Jost as her date. This is the first time in a few years that they?ve been on a red carpet together, and it?s her first red carpet since giving birth to her second child, son Cosmo Jost.
Scarlett wore this white Versace suit with a cut-out back. She looked pretty from the front, but I?m not a huge fan of the cut-out back, honestly. She looks a bit tired, probably because she had to fly all the way to LA for this, and she?s spent most of the year at her place in the Hamptons.
I?m happily surprised that Scarlett?s career doesn?t seem to have been affected long-term or short-term by her lawsuit against Disney for the release of Black Widow. The case went into arbitration and Disney quickly settled the issue, because it was clear that Scarlett had backup not only from CAA and SAG-AFTRA (her union), but from women?s groups around the country. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige attended this ceremony and he not only praised Scarlett (and did not mention her lawsuit), he also confirmed that Scarlett will still work with Marvel on a future project as a producer.

Scarlett Johansson filed a breach of contract lawsuit against Disney two weeks ago after they screwed her over on her contractual backend by releasing Black Widow on their Premier Access streaming service. BW?s box office numbers struggled, and that struggle was partially attributed to the fact that millions of people simply streamed the movie from the comfort of their own home, the profits of which Scarlett does not get a cut. In retaliation and response of Scarlett?s lawsuit, Disney immediately went Full Petty and issued this statement:
?There is no merit whatsoever to this filing. The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson?s contract and furthermore, the release of ?Black Widow? on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20 [million] she has received to date.?
Disney came out firing, which in my opinion shows that Scarlett?s lawsuit has some merit. They wouldn?t have come out, guns blazin?, if this was just some nuisance suit. People are still really mad about this statement from Disney too Scarlett?s CAA agent, Bryan Lourd, called out Disney?s sexism and appalling language. I said at the time that this has the power to really shift a lot of loyalties and business-as-usual within Hollywood. Powerful people might actually have to take sides and there?s a ?going to the mattresses? vibe. Speaking of, the president of SAG-AFTRA, Gabrielle Carteris, issued her statement on behalf of the actor?s union.
?Disney should be ashamed of themselves for resorting to tired tactics of gender-shaming and bullying,? Carteris said in a statement. ?Actors must be compensated for their work according to their contracts. Scarlett Johansson is shining a white-hot spotlight on the improper shifts in compensation that companies are attempting to slip by talent as distribution models change. Nobody in any field of work should fall victim to surprise reductions in expected compensation. It is unreasonable and unjust. Disney and other content companies are doing very well and can certainly live up to their obligations to compensate the performers whose art and artistry are responsible for the corporation?s profits.?
?Additionally, we are deeply concerned by the gendered tone of Disney?s criticism of Ms. Johansson. Women are not ?callous? when they stand up and fight for fair pay ? they are leaders and champions for economic justice. Women have been victimized by pay inequity for decades, and they have been further victimized by comments like those in Disney?s press statements. These sorts of attacks have no place in our society and SAG-AFTRA will continue to defend our members from all forms of bias.?
[From Deadline]
Honestly? While I will hate on ScarJo for many, many things, I admire her for what she?s doing here, and I?m glad that her union and several womens? groups and equal pay groups are backing her too. Carteris is right Disney?s statement is gendered and Disney was trying ?to put a woman in her place.? Which, again, shows that Scarlett?s lawsuit has merit, and that she?s been treated differently (with less respect) by Disney/Marvel.
Meanwhile, ?longtime Disney attorney Daniel Petrocelli? gave an interview to Variety in which he? continued to smear Scarlett as a greedy ahole. Petrocelli told Variety: ?It is obvious that this is a highly orchestrated PR campaign to achieve an outcome that is not obtainable in the lawsuit. No amount of public pressure can change or obscure the explicit contractual commitments. The written contract is clear as a bell.? A lawsuit isn?t a PR campaign. It?s a lawsuit, and if Scarlett didn?t have all of her ducks in a row, Disney?s smears would have worked. That?s why he?s mad.
Now, Petrocelli also claims that the revenue from the Premier Access streams are factored into the box-office tally. Meaning, I guess, that they?ll just lump the Premier Access money with the box office money and it?s all the same and ScarJo might hit her bonus markers that way? Which is interesting, if true, although I think Scarlett?s case is more about how she had zero choice in BW coming out on Premier Access on the same day as the theatrical release. Speaking of, the Disney lawyers also claim that they were blindsided by Scarlett?s lawsuit and that she had not raised any of these issues beforehand. That?s a damn lie and everyone knows it. Anyway, this Variety piece is interesting and I bet Petrocelli?s comments will be entered into the court record at some point.

On Thursday, Scarlett Johansson dropped a lawsuit on Disney for breach of contract. The basic gist is that Scarlett didn?t want Black Widow to be released on Disney?s premiere access subscription service simultaneously with the theatrical release, and ScarJo believes (correctly) that the streaming numbers suppressed the theatrical box office. Scarlett?s profit-sharing backend is based solely on the box office numbers and her lawsuit points out that Disney made tens of millions of dollars from streaming, in addition to signing up new subscribers.
Apparently, Hollywood insiders are supporting Scarlett. Variety quotes one unnamed agent who said: ?Good for her. A lot of other actors are cheering for Scarlett and rooting her on. She has a lot of power and that makes this a visible conversation that puts Disney on the spot. By doing all of this in public, she might be able to change the rulebook.? When Warner Bros dumped their new slate on HBO Max, they worked out deals with their talent, providing $250 million in backend deals to people like Denzel Washington, Will Smith and Gal Gadot. Disney did not do that for Scarlett and that?s likely why this has ended up happening in the public sphere. Disney thought they could just shrug off Scarlett?s private complaints and she wouldn?t do anything like this. Disney also thought they could send out this nasty statement:
?There is no merit whatsoever to this filing. The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson?s contract and furthermore, the release of ?Black Widow? on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20 [million] she has received to date.?
[Via Variety]
That statement was so harsh, it actually brought more people to Scarlett?s side. Disney has actually laid off 30,000 workers during the pandemic, so it?s pretty rich of them to claim that Scarlett is the one who has a ?callous disregard? for the pandemic. Not to mention, it?s pretty fking rude and sexist to actually tell the world Scarlett?s salary. Disney was attempting to bait sexist aholes into attacking Scarlett as just another rich bitch complaining about her millions. Which is probably why Scarlett?s CAA agent Bryan Lourd issued his own very harsh statement condemning Disney for what they are trying to do. Here?s Lourd?s statement:
I want to address the Walt Disney Company?s statement that was issued in response to the lawsuit filed against them yesterday by our client Scarlett Johansson. They have shamelessly and falsely accused Ms. Johansson of being insensitive to the global COVID pandemic, in an attempt to make her appear to be someone they and I know she isn?t.
Scarlett has been Disney?s partner on nine movies, which have earned Disney and its shareholders billions. The company included her salary in their press statement in an attempt to weaponize her success as an artist and businesswoman, as if that were something she should be ashamed of. Scarlett is extremely proud of the work that she, and all of the actors, writers, directors, producers, and the Marvel creative team have been a part of for well over a decade.
This suit was filed as a result of Disney?s decision to knowingly violate Scarlett?s contract. They have very deliberately moved the revenue stream and profits to the Disney+ side of the company leaving artistic and financial partners out of their new equation. That?s it, pure and simple. Disney?s direct attack on her character and all else they implied is beneath the company that many of us in the creative community have worked with successfully for decades.
[From Deadline]
?The company included her salary in their press statement in an attempt to weaponize her success as an artist and businesswoman, as if that were something she should be ashamed of.? That?s exactly it. Disney included her salary to weaponize her success, but even more than that, they wanted to tell the world: don?t feel sorry for this rich woman, she?s already making millions. The fact that CAA is calling out Disney is important here too, because it means it?s not just about Scarlett being okay with burning her bridges with Disney. It?s about the most powerful talent agency in Hollywood picking a side, and it will have larger repercussions for CAA?s talent slate and their relationships with the largest and most powerful studio in town. Hollywood is about to go to the mattresses.
