They?re big supporters for social rights and Ben Affleck teamed up with wife Jennifer Garner for the second annual Save the Children Illumination Gala at the Plaza Hotel in New York City on Wednesday night (November 19).
The hot Hollywood couple got all gussied up in their finest duds for the red carpet event where the ?Argo? star was honored with the Global Child Advocate Award for his work with the organization.
"He works on Eastern Congo Initiative, and I work on the U.S. programs for Save the Children, and within that, I really work on getting kids started on the right foot from birth to 5, helping families get their kids up and ready for school and healthy," Garner told the Associated Press. "We don't scatter our energy around."

Here are some photos of last night?s LA premiere of Wild, Reese Witherspoon?s ?Oscar hopeful.? Reese has a much better chance at getting an Oscar nomination than Jennifer Aniston, actually. Reese has made it to most Best Actress shortlists. I?m including photos of Reese, Wild author Cheryl Strayed and Laura Dern. Dern plays Reese?s mom in the movie.
I?m also including some close-ups of Reese?s absolutely GREAT jewelry p0rn. I?m not sure if that rock is her engagement ring plus some eternity bands or if she borrowed those jewels, but they are great. Her sapphire earrings are amazing too. Reese?s dress is Zac Posen and she?s wearing nude Louboutins. I?m not really into the dress, but it?s alright. Is it just me or does Reese?s bust look?larger? Padding or bolt-ons?
Meanwhile, Reese took part in this year?s THR Actress Roundtable, which was just a roundtable of white ladies. Seriously, there are no notable women of color in film this year? The roundtable featured Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Patricia Arquette, Felicity Jones and more. You can read THR?s coverage here, I haven?t read the whole thing yet, I confess. During the discussion, the conversation came around to Renee Zellweger?s new face, Reese piped up:
The sprawling conversation covered interesting ground, and the actresses touched on a few hot-button Hollywood issues, including Rene Zellweger, who was the victim of disturbingly harsh criticism last month after some Internet users suggested that the actress?s face appeared different.
?It?s cruel and rude and disrespectful,? Witherspoon said of the Internet?s criticism of Zellweger. ?It bothers me immensely . . . I know this is so Pollyanna of me, but why?and it’s particularly women?why do they have to tear women down? And why do we have to tear other women down to build another woman up? . . . Like, this one looks great without her makeup but that one doesn’t look good without her makeup, and it’s all just a judgment and assault that I don’t?look, men are prey to it as well. I just don’t think it’s with the same sort of ferocity.?

As CB and I both said at the time, it was absolutely human nature to simply NOTICE that Renee has a new face. I say it?s human nature to comment on it too, like ?Wow, she?s had some work done.? Renee?s old face made her a very rich woman and she won tons of awards because of her stellar acting. Her old face was part of her brand, and she messed with her brand when she changed her face (and then blatantly lied about it). I think falling back on some kind of ?that?s sexist!!!? argument IS Pollyanna. It?s the new thing that so many celebrity women are doing now ? they think crying sexism is a magic wand they can wave over a conversation to shut down legitimate conversation/criticism of their behavior. I ended up watching about 20 minutes of an episode of Kourtney & Khloe Take the Hamptons last weekend (don?t ask!). I was reminded of something? Kourtney is the least interesting Kardashian, especially since she became a mom. I just think motherhood is her identity at this point, and to give her some credit, she seems like a very involved and loving mother. But that?s it ? She only cares about her children, often to the exclusion of everything else. After watching part of that episode? it does seem like she?s an a?hole about everything else, especially Scott. I feel like she only keeps him around so she can keep on having babies. Anyway, she?s about to give birth to her third, so she got the December cover of Fit Pregnancy. It?s actually an interesting interview but that?s just because she?s talking about all of the hot-button mommy/birthing issues. Some highlights:
She wants to take care of her babies from the start: ?I love doing everything myself at the beginning. I?m not getting a baby nurse. I take two months off and no one is allowed to bother me or talk to me about anything work-

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner will pose for the occasional paparazzi photos together, especially around Awards season, but they generally don’t walk red carpets together. Garner has said it’s because she doesn’t want to just be known as the ‘wife of’ a famous husband, but I tend to think it’s Affleck’s idea and she’s just been going along with it. They did make an exception to pose together at the Vanity Fair Oscar party this year and last year, when Argo took home Best Picture.
Here are some photos of the two, married since 2005, at the Save The Children gala in New York last night. Affleck looks a little tipsy to me. Maybe it’s jet lag, but there’s something about his eyes that make it look like he’s had a few. Garner just looks happy to be there and to pose with her husband.
Affleck was there to accept the Global Child Advocate Award for his work founding The Eastern Congo Initiative. In his acceptance speech, Affleck mentioned his argument with Bill Maher and author Sam Harris when he was a guest on Maher’s show last month. Affleck claimed he was making a “Sesame Street” argument that “you don’t judge a whole group of people based on the actions of a few.” I think Affleck was mischaracterizing Harris’ position at least (Maher went a little far with it as is typical of him) and that there was no point in bringing it up again weeks later. Obviously he’s been thinking about it in the interim. Affleck also talked about the charity work that he and his wife do, and I found that part of his speech moving:
Ben Affleck feels more comfortable speaking his mind than pretending to say what people want to hear. So before receiving his award at Wednesday’s Save the Children Illumination Gala, he praised wife Jennifer Garner on her dedication to their family, and then shared insight into his recent spat with “Real Time” host Bill Maher over generalized remarks about Islam.
On an episode last month, Affleck took issue with Maher saying that Islam is “the only religion that acts like the Mafia.”
“I was ultimately making a ‘Sesame Street’ argument. You don’t judge a whole group of people based on the actions of a few,” Affleck said of their heated debate.
The “Gone Girl” actor makes no bones about speaking his mind when it comes to hot-button issues.
“That’s the environment around my dinner table when we talk politics,” he said. “I think I’d rather tell the truth and say what I believe in and make people unhappy than sort of pretend to think something else to accommodate them and try to be liked. That’s just the way it goes and I don’t think I’m any great champion of anything, but if they’re going to put me on a show, I’m going to say what I think.”
As for Garner, the 42-year-old actor says he’s grateful that his wife takes on the “lion’s share” of responsibilities, dedicating her time to raising their three young children, while maintaining her career and charity work.
“She’s been really smart about choosing her projects, doing ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ or ‘Alexander and the Terrible Day,’ smart, good movies that luckily have been successful. And then, they’re not so time-consuming that she can’t do this work and be there for our kids, which is the most important thing to her,” Affleck said.
Garner spoke of how the couple divides their time for philanthropy.
“He works on Eastern Congo Initiative, and I work on the U.S. programs for Save the Children, and within that, I really work on getting kids started on the right foot from birth to 5, helping families get their kids up and ready for school and healthy,” she said, adding: “We don’t scatter our energy around.”
Affleck co-founded the Eastern Congo Initiative in 2010 with Whitney Williams. The organization advocates the economic and social growth of the country through various programs. And while some of their missions focus on the well-being of children, Affleck says he doesn’t make “value judgments” of where the problems are more dire.
“There are children in the United States, my wife has traveled, been in their homes in Kentucky, West Virginia, in the central valley of California who can’t speak and they’re 4 years old, who can’t read until five years later than they should, who get no stimuli, who are really suffering, and we recognize it. In this country, with our wealth, with our, I think, decency and empathy, we should be taking care ? at the very least educating all of our citizenry.”
He added: “I also think it’s important to take care of people who are suffering on a different level, which is in Eastern Congo suffering from war and famine and preventable disease. And where maternal health is non-existent, so 1 in 5 children dies before the age of 5.”

It’s hard to fathom that there are kids in our country who live in such dire conditions that they can’t talk until they’re four. Good for Ben and Jen for dedicating their time to charity. I’m happy they posed together and now that I know more about the event I understand why they did it. They’re united in their charity work for children. I would love it if they just started walking the red carpet together at most events from now on, but I doubt that’s going to happen.

Then the Variety shoot yesterday was stunning. And now this DuJour Magazine editorial might be the best photoshoot yet!! Ten, fifteen years ago? Angelina and Jack would have been a couple. They would have been torrid and bad and sexy and it would have been amazing to watch. But now they are just friends and coworkers. Jolie on looking for projects & finding Unbroken: ?I was looking for something to do and studying what was out there as a director. Making Unbroken for her sons: ?In the back of my mind, I wanted to make a film that would help my boys become better men. They know Louie?s story, so I?m able to say to them that it?s not bad to be full of fire?it?s what you choose to do with that fire.?

There are lots of quotes from Jack too, I just wanted to focus the excerpts on Angelina. Jack talks about how ?very f?king brutal? it was to lose weight and shoot the POW scenes and the athletic scenes. He also talked about learning that one of his friends had been diagnosed with cancer and really needing to be around friends and family just before the shoot, and Angelina got a helicopter and organized a big group of people to come out for Jack, and how much all of that meant to him. It?s a good read, but they repeat some stuff from the Variety piece yesterday. What I like is that Jack doesn?t seem to be playing the ?too cool for all of this? game. He seems to genuinely want to go out of his way to support this film. It?s nice.

I tend to think the reaction to Chris Hemsworth being named the 2014 Sexiest Man Alive was a resounding ?meh.? People weren?t angry about the choice, people acknowledge that he?s a good-looking guy with a fantastic Thor-body. But are there scores of women out there who are, like, all about Hemsworth and only Hemsworth? Not really. But, as I said, at least people weren?t angry. Everyone was truly ANGRY when Bradley Cooper was named the SMA back in 2011. People actually protested the choice of B-Coop, mainly (I suppose) because 2011 was seen as ?Ryan Gosling?s year,? like he was the one in the news and it was the height of the Hey-Girl-dom. I guess the Gosloonies always thought that People Magazine snubbed him outright. But The Wrap?s sources now say that Gosling got the approach about SMA a few times and he turned them down every time:
People magazine’s annual ?Sexiest Man Alive? issue has sparked backlash yet again, for passing over actor Ryan Gosling as cover star ? but the ?The Notebook? actor has repeatedly turned down the honor, an insider told TheWrap. So to use a catchphrase in the spirit of the web’s most popular Gosling memes: ?Hey girl, calm the Internet down.?
?They tried a few times, especially during his huge year in 2011,? an individual close to the cover negotiations said. Multiple efforts were consistently squashed by the actor’s team.
?The consensus was he’s too serious for it, too artsy,? the individual added.
A spokesperson for Gosling has not yet returned TheWrap’s request for comment. People’s Editorial Director told TheWrap: ?While I look forward to the day when Ryan Gosling is named Sexiest Man Alive, this was not his year. Our 2014 honoree Chris Hemsworth was our first and only choice. If you want to know why, just look at him. I mean, seriously.?
Outlets like BuzzFeed and rabid, Gosling-obsessed Tumblr users mourned his absent mug each year, even taking their protest to the front steps of Time Inc.’s New York headquarters. But it’s the ?Drive? star who speeds away from the glory.
We understand the bid to be taken seriously, as Gosling’s silent and brooding acting style earns him art house cred. But there’s no ignoring he’s the Internet’s collective boyfriend: street fight referee, feminist icon and refuser of cereal all rolled into one. Yes, the superlative is superficial. Accepting usually entails an obligatory shirtless or flexing photo shoot, sidebars about ab routines and a giddy Q&A. But the exposure is priceless and the reign a whole 12 months.
Also, since it’s 1985 launch, ?Sexiest Man? has some alumni most people would deem substantial actors: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, Bradley Cooper and Tom Cruise to name a few. Gosling devotees shouldn’t abandon hope just yet. A shift in his perspective might sway him to eventually grace the cover.
The recent birth of his daughter Esemeralda may inspire some adventure. It’s a raging cliche in the realm of celeb maternity that stars don’t fully appreciate their bodies until giving birth. Ryan didn’t do the pushing (shout out Eva Mendes!) but maybe some of that empowerment will rub off.

She?s earned her stripes in the music scene thanks to countless hits and an ?American Idol? crown and Kelly Clarkson was rightfully honored for her work on Tuesday night (November 18).
The ?Moment Like This? singer headed over to the Musicians On Call?s 15th Anniversary Celebration honoring herself and EVP of Republic Records, Charlie Walk.
During the event, Kelly took to the stage to receive her award while looking stunning a black and gold gown.
Plenty of stars came out to support the icons including Nick Jonas, Pete Wentz and Jessie J.
