Emma has been working since she was a kid, and Julia absolutely ?nepotized? her niece?s way into the industry, appearing in Aunt Julia?s films and benefiting from Aunt Julia?s industry connections. Emma is Peak Nepo Baby, and she was all about nepotism since childhood. Well, Emma has decided to chime in on the whole ?nepo baby? discourse. Would you believe that Emma thinks nepo babies have to work harder to prove themselves more??
Emma Roberts appeared on the ?Table for Two? podcast (via Vanity Fair) and was asked whether becoming a ?massive movie star? was a priority for her when she decided to follow in the career footsteps of her father, Eric Roberts, and her aunt, Julia Roberts. Not quite. Emma said that watching her aunt become an A-list superstar as a kid showed her how scary that level of fame can be.
?I saw very up close what that really looks like,? Roberts said. ?It?s obviously fun and it?s great, but there is a part of it that?s really scary. So I?ve wanted to kind of carve my own path. ? Fame has never been the goal, because fame at a certain level is kind of scary.?
?Even in my later teens, I was like, I never want my fame to outweigh my work,? she continued. ?Because there?s nothing scarier to me than being so famous that you?re never left alone, but also you?re not getting good jobs. And that was kind of happening to a lot of people when I was in my teens and early 20s. I never wanted that to happen to me.?
?There?s two sides of the coin,? Roberts said [about the ?nepo baby? discourse]. ?People like to say, you know, you have a leg up because you have family in the industry. But then the other side to that is, you have to prove yourself more. Also, if people don?t have good experiences with other people in your family, then you?ll never get a chance.?
?Everybody loves the kind of overnight-success story. And so if you?re kind of not the girl from the middle of nowhere that broke into Hollywood, there?s kind of an eye roll of like, ?Well, your dad was this,?? she continued. ?I always joke, ?Why is no one calling out George Clooney for being a nepo baby? [His aunt] Rosemary Clooney was an icon.? I feel like young girls get it harder with the nepo-baby thing. Like, I don?t really see people calling out sons of famous actors, not that they should be called out.?
Roberts concluded her argument by saying that people who criticize nepo babys ?only see your wins, because they only see when you?re on the poster of a movie ? they don?t see all the rejection along the way. That?s why I?m always very open about things I?ve auditioned for and haven?t gotten the part for.?

The one thing I think is correct is that female nepo babies get it harder than the guys. Other nepo babies have mentioned that too, so it must have been in some kind of nepo-baby memo or they were issued talking points or something. But the whole ?Everybody loves the kind of overnight-success story. And so if you?re kind of not the girl from the middle of nowhere that broke into Hollywood? construct is idiotic. That?s not the way Hollywood works anymore. While there are still those overnight success stories, they are few and far between because Hollywood has gone all-in on nepo babies. I remember years ago, Karen Elson talking about how much the fashion industry has changed because there was such an obsession with ?this girl is the daughter of .? That?s happened in Hollywood too, and it?s one of the reasons why I support someone like Sydney Sweeney, because she had zero connections and she hustled her ass off to make her career happen.
?But then the other side to that is, you have to prove yourself more. Also, if people don?t have good experiences with other people in your family, then you?ll never get a chance.? The bad experiences with family members could be a reference to her father Eric Roberts, who has kind of a reputation for being an ahole professionally and privately. Eric was estranged from Julia and some of the family for a while as well. But no, nepo babies don?t have to ?prove themselves more.? That?s completely asinine coming out of Emma?s mouth.

Ariana Grande recently appeared on Penn Badgley?s Podcrushed podcast. That was where she dramatically changed her entire voice in a matter of seconds. Well, people are still going through the whole interview and they found a particularly problematic section where Ari talked about her youthful obsession with serial killers. One serial killer in particular: Jeffrey Dahmer, who killed 17 people (that we know about).
Ariana Grande had a fascination with Jeffrey Dahmer when she was younger, and the admission is rattling some of her fans. The Eternal Sunshine singer was a guest on Penn Badgleys Podcrushed this month, where Grande shocked the hosts with a story about how she once revealed to her fans that Dahmer was her dream dinner date. Grande was asked about serial killers in relation to the supervillain theme of The Boy Is Mine music video, which stars Badgley.
I knew someone was gonna say this, she said with a laugh just before the 30:00 mark. Whats this pattern, do we need to talk about this pattern here? Maybe theres something to look at. No, Im kidding? No, but I was infatuated with serial killers when I was younger. Mmhmm. Its not nothing. Im serious.
Grande told a fascinated Badgley and his Podcrushed co-hosts Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari that she had a story that was not funny but perhaps fine to share. Ariana once held a Q&A with young fans between her time on Sam & Cat and becoming a pop star and was asked about which living or dead person shed want to have dinner with.
I was like, Oh, youre so cute. Who, um?mom and dad, is it okay if I give the real answer? And they were like, Sure, I guess, whats the answer? And I was like, Um, Jeffrey Dahmers pretty fascinating, I think I would have loved to have met him. Like, you know, maybe with a third party or something. I have questions I want toI have a lot toI dont know, I would love to And the parents were like, Well explain it later, sweetheart. And I was like, Ill just sing Problem and go home.'

What the hell is wrong with her? There?s this whole thing with women (mostly white women) being fascinated by serial killers and obsessively listening to true-crime podcasts and all of that. But I?ve always hoped that for most women, their interest in serial killers is from an investigative and criminal justice perspective, not ?wow, serial killers are cool, I?d love to meet one!? And saying she wants to have dinner with one of the most famous cannibals in American history?? Disgusting. Well, the families of Jeffrey Dahmer?s victims are mad about it. As they should be!
The family of one of Jeffrey Dahmers victims is speaking out, slamming Ariana Grande for once saying shed be interested in having a sit down with the late serial killer. That revelation does not sit well with the loved ones of Tony Hughes a deaf, non-verbal victim Dahmer targeted and killed in 1991.
Shirley, Tonys mother, tells TMZ she hopes Ariana understands how hurtful her comments are, noting the confession made her emotional. She was also disturbed when Ariana laughed during the podcast about her Dahmer fascination. Shirley wants the singer, and the general public, to know she and other victims families experience very real pain any time Dahmer is brought up.
She adds To me, it seems like she?s sick in her mind. It?s not fancy or funny to say you would have wanted to do dinner with him. It?s also not something you should say to young people, which she says she did.
Shirley says she finds it troubling Ari didnt seem to show any empathy for the victims loved ones. Tonys sister, Barbara, shares a similar sentiment saying the comments glamorize Dahmer, who was beaten to death in prison in 1994. Shed love to see Ariana apologize, so her fans know this isnt right.

Ari absolutely deserves all of this criticism. She should apologize. But mostly, she needs to stop talking about this kind of twisted sh-t. Once again, it?s not like someone merely having an amateur interest in famous serial killers, it?s that Ariana wishes she could HAVE DINNER with Dahmer and that she thinks that?s a story which is funny or quirky.

Jason Kelce and Travis Kelce recorded this week?s New Heights podcast last Saturday, just hours after they met Prince William, Prince George and Princess Charlotte backstage at Taylor Swift?s Eras concert at Wembley. As we discussed yesterday, Travis thinks Prince William is ?the coolest motherfker.? That was the big headline and I wanted to get the story out quickly because I knew that it would be one of the bigger stories of the day (it was). The British media is crowing about it too, that Taylor Swift?s cool football player boyfriend thinks an angry egg is a ?cool motherfker.? Of course they?re trying to drag the Sussexes into it too. Anyway, that?s all an explanation for why I didn?t get to the quotes about what the Kelces thought about the royal kids. Turns out, both Jason and Travis spent a little time with William, Charlotte and George and they were full of praise for the Wales kids.
Both Travis and Jason were big fans of 9-year-old Charlotte, who was pictured beaming alongside her dad, 42, and brother, 10, in a selfie with Swift and Travis, both 34.
I gotta say, Prince William was fantastic, but the highlight was Princess Charlotte. Prince George was great too. She was so f adorable. Like, I cannot? Jason shared, as Travis agreed and said she was.
She was a superstar, Travis added, as Jason admitted, I dont know. Maybe its because I have three girls now. She had fire to her. She was asking questions, Jason continued, calling that the most electric part of the meeting.
I love it when parents ask their kids to be present, be vocal, Travis revealed. They encourage them to take the lead in a conversation, added Jason, which the Kansas City Chiefs star called such a good parent move.
Just a good meet and the picture, keep it moving. No, let them have a moment, let them feel comfortable in talking to people? If anyone?s doing it right, Prince Williams doing it right, Travis said. So thank you, Your Royal Highness. It was awesome meeting you, and Charlotte and George.

While I generally dislike the way the media has tried to ?assign? personalities to the Wales kids the clown, the boss, the shy heir I do have to admit that Charlotte seems to be very self-assured and, for lack of a better word, ?cool.? It also feels like Charlotte takes the lead and her brothers follow her. Anyway, I don?t have an issue with what the Kelce bros said about the kids. Personally, I find the whole volte face on ?fk kings, we?re Americans? to ?William is the coolest motherfker? issue to be on-brand for the Kelces too.

Kelly Bensimon is a 56-year-old RHONY alum. She?s also a former model and former fashion editor. Her stint on RHONY seemed to give a boost to her career as an all-around celebrity and she reportedly has a net worth around $10 million. In 2009, she was charged with misdemeanor assault for allegedly punching her boyfriend at the time, Nick Stefanov. She ended up taking a plea deal and performing two days of community service. Years later, she met Scott Litner at a Rangers game. Litner is a finance bro who has worked for Bank of America, Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns. They got engaged last year on the Fourth of July. Their wedding was supposed to happen this coming weekend, only Kelly called off the wedding and ended the engagement. She issued statements to Us Weekly and People Magazine about why she ended things so suddenly:
Kelly Bensimon is speaking out after calling off her wedding to financier Scott Litner four days before the pair were supposed to tie the knot, telling PEOPLE that she refused to marry him after he wouldnt sign a prenup.
?Ultimately, my decision is nobody?s business, but I understand that there is speculation and gossip, and I want to put an end to all of it,? Bensimon, 56, tells PEOPLE exclusively. ?To be clear, he refused to sign a prenuptial agreement, and I refused to marry him. Full stop.
PEOPLE confirmed Bensimon called off the nuptials earlier this week, with an insider close to the reality star saying that she was taking time for herself to regroup during a difficult time.
In an official statement, the Real Housewives of New York City alum confirmed the news, saying that the June 29 wedding was called off on Tuesday, June 25, and that she was disappointed by this turn of events.
She was looking forward to an exciting new chapter in her life together with Scott when everything became clear to her late on Tuesday afternoon, the statement read, adding a quote from Bensimon herself: ?He thought that I would enter this union without legal protections in place, that I would leave everything to faith. But I?ve worked really, really, hard as a single mother and have always made smart decisions for myself and my family, and that will continue.
The statement added Litner, who works as a wealth management advisor, refused to sign a prenuptial agreement, effectively stalling their engagement mere days before the wedding.

I would imagine that Litner has his own money from his finance career, and it sounds like he?s used to pulling down mid-to-high six figures a year. My point being, a prenup would have protected him and his assets as well and I do think it?s shady AF that he seemingly refused to sign a prenup. Kelly also told Us Weekly that she thought the refusal was ?the ultimate red flag,? and I kind of agree with her?
Also, I have to say something really political here, so if you?re not in the mood, just skip this but given the hard-right evangelical political turn in many states and within the Supreme Court, women need to start being very VERY fking careful about who they become legally attached to. If this year?s elections take a bad turn, no-fault divorces are on the chopping block in a big way. Birth control access is on the chopping block, nevermind abortion access. I?m just saying? ladies, if you want to shack up with a man, go ahead. But don?t combine finances, don?t marry without a prenup, don?t leave yourself unprotected, don?t let that man baby-trap you or marriage-trap you.

You guys sort of convinced me that Jennifer Lopez?s trip to Europe is the precursor to a divorce announcement. I hate that I believe it. Last week, Jennifer was on vacation in Italy without her husband Ben Affleck. This week, she?s attending shows at Paris Fashion Week. Yesterday, she attended the Dior show and then she was seen later on Monday, leaving her hotel and (according to Backgrid) heading for the airport. I love her travel outfit wide-leg grey-silver trousers and an oversized white button-down? I would look horrible in it but she looks so chic and cool. I like her Dior outfit too.
Jennifer?s Italian vacation photos were very exclusive, meaning only the biggest sites and publications could afford to buy them. But these Paris pics? They?ll run everywhere. Jennifer looking happy and glowing, wearing cute outfits and perhaps slowly introducing a new single era? Is that the purpose of the Paris trip? Perhaps.
Meanwhile, Ben was back at home in LA and he got into it with some paparazzi outside of Jennifer?s house on Sunday night. This is the home they are currently selling, and clearly, J.Lo wasn?t home. The paps were using their flashes and they temporarily blinded him as he was behind the wheel. That?s when Ben got out of his car and bitched out one of the paps. This feels so vintage, so ?original Bennifer.?

Out of all of the Kardashian-Jenners, I tend to give Kendall and Kylie Jenner the widest berth when it comes to how they deal with fame and celebrity. They became famous through Keeping Up with the Kardashians when they were 12 or 13 years old, before they had any concept of what they were doing, before they could really ?consent? to being part of this circus. They still choose to be part of the family business as adults, to varying degrees, but I?m not surprised that Kendall and Kylie both seem to have a really fked up relationship with their ?celebrity.? Speaking of, Kylie had some sh-t to say in this week?s episode of The Kardashians (the Hulu show) about how people still have so much sh-t to say about her appearance. Keep in mind, Kylie has been getting cosmetic work on her face and body since her teenage years.
On the June 20 episode, Kylie Jenner, 26, said to her sister, It?s a miracle I still have confidence and can still look in the mirror and still think Im pretty.
The Kylie Cosmetics creator shared that after Paris Fashion Week in September, she got a lot of negative comments about her looks. She said she wanted to do a more minimal makeup look, because people tell her she wears too much, but then shes criticized for doing too little.
I hear nasty things about myself all the time, she said in a confessional. I think its just after 10 years of hearing about it, it just gets exhausting. She said shes so numb to people talking about her looks all the time and wonders why the internet thinks its okay.
?I went on a journey last year dissolving half of my lip filler,? Kylie continued. ?I hate even having this conversation over and over and over again. It feels like it?s a waste of my breath because I think, with me, it is never going to change.?
Kendall wrapped her younger sister up in a hug, seeing how much the criticism weighed on her.
Like, I?ve never cried about this before, but I guess it does affect me, Kylie admitted. People have been talking about my looks since I was 12 or 13, before I even got lip filler.
I think Im a really strong and I was put in this position for a reason, Kylie said in a confessional. I do think of myself as a confident person? but Im also human and theres only so much someone can take.

I do think she?s changing up her cosmetic work these days because she doesn?t want to look so ?Instagram filtered in real life.? Kylie, Kim and Khloe all have that look in real life, like they?ve gotten so much done to their faces that they look permanently ?filtered.? Anyway, I know people are yelling at Kylie because of the years of problematic messaging from the K-Js, but again? Kylie herself is damaged by her own family?s relationships with plastic surgery, image and fame. I find it sort of remarkable that Kylie is a somewhat functional person, because she would have been better off being raised by wolves.

Madonna has been sued three times for starting three different concerts on her Celebration Tour two or more hours late. The first of this trifecta of lawsuits was filed by two fans who had attended her Brooklyn show in December. Madonna?s team issued a broad statement that that particular show was derailed due to technical reasons, which I took to mean the fact that it is technically impossible for Madonna to start a show on time. Nobody?s perfect, but most people aren?t charging an arm and a leg for the privilege of seeing a beautiful stranger perform, either. Just a few days ago we had an update that Madonna?s lawyers were crying ?harassment!? over the plaintiffs? lawyers saying they had reached a settlement. They had not. And they still have not reached a settlement, which Madonna?s lawyers emphasized when news broke that the case has officially been dismissed by the plaintiffs with prejudice, which means they can never ever bring the suit again. I did not see this one coming.
The lawsuit against Madonna pertaining to the late start time of her Celebration World Tour has been dismissed without settlement.
According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE on Wednesday, June 19, the lawsuit, which was filed by plaintiffs Michael Fellows and Jason Alvarez against the singer, sent a notice of a ?voluntary dismissal with prejudice.?
The Grammy winner, 65, was sued on January 17 over a delayed start time during the December 13 show of her Celebration World Tour in Brooklyn. The plaintiffs accused her of ?false advertising? and filed the suit.
Due to their recent dismissal with prejudice, Fellows and Alvarez cannot re-file their claims. The singer and Live Nation?s attorney, Jeff Warshafsky, wrote a letter on June 19, noting that the dismissal ?was not the result of any settlement? between the parties.
The letter stated that Madonna and Live Nation ?do not agree with plaintiffs? position that each party should bear its own fees and costs.?
?Defendants believe that this action was a frivolous strike suit designed to force them to incur legal expenses,? read Warshafsky?s letter. ?Plaintiffs have now abandoned this lawsuit when it became clear that this approach would not result in a settlement payment and that they would need to oppose defendants? motion to dismiss the Amended Complaint.?
Additionally, Warshafsky noted that the ?defendants reserve the right to move for sanctions, attorneys? fees, and costs? due to the plaintiffs? false ?Notice of Settlement? that the Court struck on June 10.
The plaintiffs claim that the popstar?s Dec. 13 concert started at 10:30 p.m., despite the tickets advertising that it would start at 8:30 p.m. The two fans accused the delay of being a ?wanton exercise in false advertising, negligent misrepresentation, and unfair and deceptive trade practices.?
The original filing stated that the two fans ?would not have paid for tickets? had they known about the start time. The filing also noted that the plaintiffs argued that concert attendees were ?confronted with limited public transportation, limited ride-sharing, and/or increased public and private transportation costs at that late hour? when they left the venue after 1 a.m.

I am gobsmacked by this development! So it?s lose-lose for the plaintiffs ? no settlement and no adjudication of the case. What happened behind the scenes? Because the fact that Madonna started more than two hours late is undisputed. Since her lawyers are calling it a ?frivolous? suit, I?m wondering if the language from the original filing came back to bite the plaintiffs, the parts about their having to be up and at work the next morning. This tactic never seemed like a good strategy to me; they were saying too much that the defense could use against them ? which it seems they did ? when the facts alone were strong enough. So again I ask: what happened behind the scenes, here? Also, it seems especially pernicious that Madonna and Live Nation?s lawyers are talking about going after the plaintiffs to pay her legal fees. Come on, I know Madge is an unapologetic bitch, but the Material Girl just made $225 million from this tour alone, and Live Nation is the touring world?s biggest monopoly. Don?t make two poor fans who have to get up for work in the morning foot the bill for everyone?s fees!
There?s at least one more chance for the justice system to get it right, as two lawsuits still stand: one for a Washington, DC concert that Madonna began by saying ?I am sorry I am late? no, I am not sorry, it?s who I am? I?m always late,? and one in California where the plaintiff added charges

Last week, we talked about the super exciting news that Practical Magic is getting a sequel. At the time of Warner Bros? announcement, all that was known was that the sequel was greenlit and that OG stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman were ?in talks? to return for it. Sounds like those talks went really well because both actresses have confirmed that they?ll be back! Last week, Kidman, who played Gillian, the older of the two Owens sisters, told People that there?s ?a lot more to tell? of the Owens? family story. This week, it was Bullock?s turn to comment on it. At an event in Los Angeles, she said she was excited about the sequel, exclaiming, ?Here comes trouble, but good trouble.?
The actress, 59, reunited with Griffin Dunne, the director of the original 1998 film, during a book party at the Georgian Hotel on Tuesday, June 18, for his memoir, The Friday Afternoon Club: A Family Memoir.
At the event, which was also attended by Mary McLaglen, the films line producer, Bullock opened up about her excitement for the upcoming sequel, expressing, Here comes trouble, but good trouble.
While it is not known if Dunne and McLagen are attached to the new project, Bullock praised Dunnes storytelling abilities, expressing, You feel like you were always in the back seat experiencing it all with him. He has lived more lives than a cat.
I don?t know anyone who has experienced what he has and can still manage to find the love and humor in even the darkest of places, she added.
In an interview with PEOPLE on Thursday, June 13, Nicole Kidman confirmed that she and Bullock are set to reprise their roles in the upcoming film, which has a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman.
Yes I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And thats that. Theres a lot more to tell which is why we go, OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this. We found a way in, said Kidman, 56. PEOPLE first reported that the actresses were in talks to star and produce the film on Monday, June 10.
The original film, based on the 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman of the same name, features Bullock and Kidman as the Owens sisters, a pair of witches who face a family curse that prevents them from ever finding lasting love by killing off the men theyre involved with.
While an official release date has not been set, Warner Bros. said it is in development and coming soon in a previous announcement.

Well then, bring on this good trouble! I was so excited about this news that I ended up rewatching Practical Magic last weekend. I had forgotten how amazing that kitchen and whole house is. I do hope the sequel is still set on Maria?s Island. I also hope it doesn?t follow the same basic formula as the first movie, only sliding Sally?s daughters into the places of Gillian and Sally. I also really hope the rest of the cast comes back too! Let?s have something that involves all six Owens women and whatever children the new generation may have. Bring back Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, and Evan Rachel Wood! Bring back Aiden Quinn! Sally did not go through all of that heartbreak just to not end up with Gary in the end. And of course, there needs to be one midnight margarita scene. I went down a rabbit hole last week, reading about PM trivia. I didn?t realize that Sandra, Nicole, Stockard, and Dianne actually got drunk while filming that scene! Turns out, they really were drinking tequila, cheap stuff that Kidman brought to set. That?s too funny. I love that they all had that camaraderie in real life.

Three weeks ago, Jennifer Lopez suddenly canceled her planned summer tour. The tour was supposed to be in support of her album This Is Me? Now. The album flopped and the musical and documentary she made about the album were pretty bad too. So bad that J.Lo?s flop era basically hurt her marriage to Ben Affleck, and now they?re sort of separated but working on it. Back when she initially canceled her tour, I said that I hoped Jennifer would spend the summer with Ben and their family, reconnecting and working on their marriage. Well, that?s sort of what she?s planning but they?re not making any mention of Ben??
Jennifer Lopez is planning her summer vacation! The Atlas star, 54, has been making plans to travel, a source tells PEOPLE. Lopez is taking time this summer to be with her children, family and close friends, Live Nation announced on May 31 when she canceled her planned concert tour amid what sources have called strain in her marriage to Ben Affleck.
Lopez has previously taken some epic summer vacations, both with friends and with Affleck. In years past, the couple enjoyed trips to France and Italy over the summer, including during their 2022 honeymoon in Milan and Lake Como and a birthday trip to the celeb-favorite island of Capri.
Lopez has said shes not a big vacation person in general, but has spoken about her love for Italy. When I finally went to spend a couple of summers in a row in the south of Italy, I really, really loved it, she shared in a 2023 interview with Travel + Leisure.

Anyway, I hope she and Ben are planning a Leo Szn birthday trip and I hope it saves their marriage. Come on? a yacht in the Mediterranean? Butt-rubbing like the good old ?Jenny From the Block? days? Or even a quiet summer in the Hamptons? Or maybe: Brazil, Morocco, London to Ibiza/Straight to LA, New York, Vegas to Africa?
PS Whoops, J.Lo is already on vacation in Italy. Ben is not with her. Yikes.

Josh Hartnett stars in M. Night Shyamalans Trap, which comes out in August. Given the buzz and excitement from the trailer, I think it will be another big success for Shyamalan. And for Hartnett, who is sort of going through a career renaissance at the moment. The fact that he?s the lead in a buzzy summer movie is wonderful too! This is what we always wanted for him, the chance to weave in between big, important movies, indie films and popcorn-entertainment. Well, Josh is finally there. It took him several decades, but now he realizes that he can actually do all of that. He recently spoke to Variety about his career and more. Some highlights:
He was so worried that ?Pearl Harbor? would define his career but now he doesn?t care: ?I love my work and I want to put it out there and I want people to enjoy it. But like me, personally, I don?t feel the way that I did when I was younger, because I was undefined. I was 19, 20, 21 years old. So, I was still trying to figure out who I was. Something of that magnitude that everybody knew about and sort of thought of me as the character, had an effect on me that I kicked back against. It was always something that I had to contend with at that age, and I was still trying to figure out what I meant to myself and to people around me. I don?t think that could happen again at the age of 45 ? I hope I?ve got a little bit more there there.?
Working with Christopher Nolan, Raoul Peck, Guy Ritchie and M. Night Shyamalan: ?I love experimentation in film. And these guys are still at the very top of their game in experimenting in film. I?ve never been anti [mainstream films]; I just was anti-paint by numbers. I want to work with people who are, for lack of a better term, artists. I?ve always been able to do that, luckily, but some of those films were not received by the public the same way that I?d hoped, and they were small.?
The Virgin Suicides: He looks back at ?The Virgin Suicides,? noting that at first, it wasn?t a monetary success but became a classic ? ?not a cult classic, a classic,? he points out. ?My hope was for all of these films that they would be able to kind of rise to that level. Some of them are better than others, but I think all were worthy swings.?
Would he do another TV series? ?I would hesitate probably to go back into a full, multi-year series unless it?s really, really good, and it has to be able to evolve. There are worse things than something becoming successful, but if it becomes successful and it?s a single environment or the character doesn?t seem to have much room to grow or fall apart, then you?re stuck. I have ADHD. I?ll lose it.?
Why he signed on to ?Trap?: ?The script was just batsh-t crazy. I was like, ?YES!? The character is wonderful. I can?t say anything about it, because he?ll kill me. But the characters are all wonderfully complex.?
He used to push back hard on the ?heartthrob? label: ?It was never my intention to be a heartthrob?[but it was] the wrong approach to even acknowledge it. I didn?t have the presence of mind to do that because I was so young. It had an effect on me, in which I had to fight against it. I really wanted to be a serious actor. What I didn?t understand is that I was in an amazing position, working with terrific directors on terrific projects. For all intents and purposes, it didn?t matter how people viewed me in tabloids or whatever ? as long as I was working within the industry. But I was too young to really understand that, to make the differentiation.?

I?m glad he?s at a place where he can acknowledge that he sort of screwed up because he was fighting against imaginary ?heartthrob? demons. The man acted as if being seen as someone with pin-up handsomeness was some kind of cross to bear, rather than an opportunity to get in those meetings and audition for those directors. Pretty privilege is real and he felt attacked by his own privilege! But it was also about his age and inexperience too he really felt like he was in the trenches because Michael Bay made him a movie star before he was ready for any of it.
