| People: Kendall Jenner will 'lay low' following the Pepsi commercial backlash | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |
|
|
|
|
|
New York Magazine?s The Cut did a great piece over the weekend where they asked advertising professionals to weigh in on the Kendall Jenner-Pepsi commercial, the ad which bombed so hard last week. You can read The Cut?s piece here. I learned some new stuff from the piece, like Pepsi organized this in-house, without an outside ad agency. Most advertising professionals believe that Pepsi started with the idea of ?Kendall Jenner is hot right now, let?s build an ad around her? and since there were no (or few) diverse voices at the decision-making table, a terrible idea became a reality.
Anyway, Kendall?s ?brand? has been hurt by the controversy too. It?s not just Pepsi taking the hit – many people wonder how and why Kendall was so clueless. She?s been ?hiding out? (not really) and her mother, Lucifer?s Homegirl, has been leaking all sort of sympathetic quotes to People Magazine.
Kendall Jenner is staying out of the spotlight while the controversy surrounding her protest-themed Pepsi commercial, which was retracted by the brand following backlash, dies down. After returning to Los Angeles from Paris on Friday, the 21-year-old model is taking it easy and leaning on her family.
?Kendall is still not happy about the controversy,? a source tells PEOPLE. ?She plans on laying low until things calm down. She still talks about it a lot and has support from her family. She is spending a quiet weekend with her family.?
?[Kendall] has been in constant communication with her mom and sisters,? a Keeping Up with the Kardashians source previously told PEOPLE. ?Everyone is being very supportive and ready to give advice. Kendall is young and certainly not used to being involved in such controversy.?
The source continued, ?She has been very upset. She feels terrible. She loves being a model. To get a Pepsi gig was a big deal. She was very excited. She never expected it to receive such backlash. She hopes people understand that she wasn?t involved in the creative process.?
?Kendall loves modeling,? the source said. ?She just wants to do a good job. She has no desire to be a part of something controversial. She is very aware of the backlash and [is] not happy. They are coming up with a plan on how to deal with it. She has been talking to [her mother Kris Jenner] about it.?
[From People]
I mean? what do you expect her to do, really? I still believe that Pepsi should take the brunt of the criticism. As for people asking why Kendall didn?t realize how controversial and tone-deaf this would be? have you ever read her interviews or watched her on the E! show? The girl is dumb as a bag of Kardashian weaves. Of course she didn?t understand the implications or the messaging. So what will be done, long term? I have no idea if we?re supposed to stay mad at Kendall or whatever. I think she?ll be ?low key? for a few weeks, then she?ll go back to being the same old Kendall.
Also: SNL?s skit about this probably won?t help! I actually thought SNL was dead-on with this, down to Cecily Strong?s Kendall thinking it was ?cute.?

| Kit Harington & Rose Leslie looked absolutely adorable at the Olivier Awards | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

The Olivier Awards were held last night in London. The Oliviers are sort of like the British version of the Tonys, I?m pretty sure. As in, the Oliviers are the most prestigious theater awards in the UK. I could be wrong, but it feels like the Oliviers are a pretty big deal. Anyway, a lot of people came out but I know that most of you will be who-ing the crap out this post if I include a ton of British stage actors.
So here are Rose Leslie and Kit Harington! Kit is most famous for being a sad-faced King of the North on Game of Thrones, but he spent his GoT hiatus on stage in London. It?s nice that Kit and Rose are still together – they?ve been on-and-off in the past, but it feels like they?ve been solidly together now for several years. Rose wore a bright red Dior gown which looks like intricate lingerie. It?s not bad though – I actually like this look a lot and I think they?re completely adorable/lovely together.
Ruth Wilson also wore Dior and I guess Dior is just making a lot of flimsy, see-through dresses these days. Ruth has lovely legs but I wish we didn?t see all of them.
Ophelia Lovibond wore Jenny Packham. This dress is so bad. Ugh.
Hey John Boyega! You look handsome.
Here?s James Norton. Some believe he could be a contender for James Bond, but I don?t really see it. He?s handsome, for sure, but he doesn?t really have that burning sex appeal.

| Charlize Theron in Dior at the NY 'Furious' premiere: tacky or cute' | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Here are some photos from last night?s New York premiere of The Fate of the Furious. The New York premiere actually seemed to be a big deal, and a lot of people came out, people that I?m not going to include in this post (like Remy Ma, Scott Eastwood, Kurt Russell, etc). I?m just here to talk about fashion and some of the bigger names. Charlize Theron joined the cast as some kind of blonde-dreadlocked superhacker villainess, and Charlize has been front and center for the promotional tour. Which is nice because now we get to talk about fashion. Unfortunately, Charlize has been wearing one awful Dior look after another. This Dior is? just too dark, too overworked, too fug. She didn?t style it well either. THAT HAIR.
I forgot that Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is pregnant. She looks amazing in this Brandon Maxwell. I hope Jason Statham is sticking around. Fingers crossed.
Michelle Rodriguez in Vivienne Westwood. Pretty silhouette, pretty color, I would just want to fuss with the bust of this dress a little bit.
The Rock. ARMS.
Nathalie Emmanuel, Vin Diesel and Ludacris. Nathalie looks so uncomfortable!
It feels like forever since we?ve talked about Elsa Pataky or had any photos of her. She was there, at the premiere, wearing a terrible shade of orange. Mom-bangs.

| Mariah Carey broke up with her backup dancer boyfriend, Bryan Tanaka | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

|
Brace yourselves, because we have a new contender for Split of the Century!! Mariah Carey and Bryan Tanaka are O-V-E-R. I cannot believe it! Noooo, I will never believe it!! You mean that Mariah couldn?t make it work with a backup dancer she basically hired to be her boyfriend in the wake of her split from James Packer?? TMZ claims that not only were Mariah and Bryan Tanaka totally for-realsies (!!), they just couldn?t make it work because? he got so ?jealous? of how men always noticed Mariah?s insane butterfly beauty. And because she didn?t like paying for him.
Mariah Carey is done with Bryan Tanaka and vice versa, and we’re told it’s over 2 things … his insane jealousy and her shutting the cash register drawer on his fingers. Our sources say Bryan had unbridled fury over Mariah’s relationship with ex-hubby Nick Cannon. She’s been chummy with him for sure, mostly for the benefit of their twins. They vacation as a family and go to dinner and parties together, sometimes without the kids. We’re told it drove Bryan insane.
We’re told Bryan would lash back at her by flirting and even coming onto women in plain view of Mariah. The last straw came at the Kids’ Choice Awards last month, when Nick and Mariah took the twins. We’re told Bryan felt the display “disrespected” him and during the event he demanded she come home.
As for the cash register part, we’re told Mariah got sick of footing the bills for her BF … for things like Gucci and Balmain and super expensive shoes. Bryan also loves jewelry, and we’re told he was always in the market for expensive watches and chains … and guess who footed the bills? She also felt Bryan slid in after she broke up with James Packer, and his endgame was fame. They haven’t seen or spoken to each other since they went to Cabo together at the end of March. They were together for a little over 5 months. And we though this one was gonna last.
[From TMZ]
My take on this situation is pretty simple: Mariah and James Packer imploded in spectacular fashion last year, with Packer?s side saying that she was wacky, tacky and that he had finally come to his senses. Mariah?s side said that Packer was insanely jealous (huh) of her relationship with this backup dancer. This all went down when Mariah was filming her E! reality show and suddenly Mariah needed a new ?storyline? to replace the ?wedding planning? storyline. So she hired Brian to be her on-camera boyfriend, basically and that?s what the show was about. And now that they?re breaking up, it?s funny that she?s using the same ?he?s insanely jealous? line again. In Mariah?s World, the men in her life are always so jealous of each other because she?s the most elusive chanteuse ever.

| Britney Spears is ending her Las Vegas residency in December | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

If you’re looking to get a piece of Britney Spears in Sin City, your days are numbered. The 35-year-old singer is ending her residency at Vegas’ Planet Hollywood’s Axis theater when her four-year contract is up in December.
The announcement was made by Britney’s manager, Larry Rudolph, on Friday. He hinted to the Las Vegas Review-Journal that even though Britney won’t be at Planet Hollywood, she may not be saying her final farewell to Las Vegas. He joked that her next venue ?could be conceivably anywhere, we could have it at the needle on the top of the Stratosphere, and do the bungee jump afterward.? He added on a more serious note that ?We are done with this show, and our next move is undecided. We are still talking with Caesars Entertainment and other interested parties in Las Vegas.?
As for her future, even though Larry said that he and his client “have made zero decisions” about what’s next, you can probably place a safe bet that Brit will launch a new, glitzier Vegas show soon. Why wouldn’t she, when her show passed the $100 million mark in ticket sales in February and earns her a reported $15 million per year salary since it opened December of 2013? That would pay for a lot of buffets for me. Yum…buffets….
Britney’s Saturday night show was the first before a short break. She’ll be back in May. In the meantime, she’s rehearsing for a quick tour that will take her to the Philippines, Japan and Israel. Her Tel Aviv gig has reportedly resulted in the postponement of an Israeli Labor Party primary election. There’s also talk that Britney might be working on a follow-up album to last year’s Glory.
And, of course, Brit has had time to work out, and is more than happy to show off the results on social media. On Friday, she posted a seductive pic in sweats and a football jersey to Instagram, making sure her abs were center stage. If I posted a photo in sweats and a t-shirt, I don’t think “seductive” could ever describe it. I could just call it “Tuesday.” (Or Wednesday, Thursday…you see where I’m going here.) I guess if you’ve got it, flaunt it, so you go on, Brit. And come back to Vegas soon. I can only see Cher so many times.
What's better than sweats and a tshirt? ?

| Janet Jackson & Wissam Al Mana are splitting after five years of marriage | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |
|
|
|
|
|
Janet Jackson married Wissam Al Mana several years ago. Some people claim that she married him five years ago, but who really knows? Janet is so secretive, I?m surprised we ever learned about this, her second secret marriage. Wissam Al Mana was always a question mark for me and I always just took it on faith that he was A) crazy-rich and B) a somewhat conservative Muslim. During Janet?s pregnancy especially, she seemed to take pains to wear hijabs and stay more covered up in general and there was speculation that she converted to Islam for him. Janet and Wissam welcomed their son Eissa around New Year?s and now it seems like Wissam and Janet are pretty much over each other. Well, maybe she?s over him. Who knows how he feels?
She?s having a marriage malfunction! Just months after giving birth to her first child at age 50, Janet Jackson has split with billionaire husband Wissam Al Mana. While one source said the split is amicable and the couple will co-parent their son, others said trouble had been brewing for months.
?She thought he had become too controlling during the pregnancy and she had already allowed him to dictate her appearance and even the way she performed at concerts,? the source who works closely with the couple said. Other demands that the ?Rhythm Nation? singer gave in to included toning down her 2014 concert tour ? wearing clothing that covered her body, instead of the skin-revealing outfits fans had grown to love. She also declined to do music videos that featured any bumping and grinding, trademarks of her work, the source said.
?It drove her crazy and she felt she was losing her fan base.?
Jackson also resented the reclusiveness of her husband, who rarely met with her friends or family, the source said. Still, the couple hoped a baby would help. They welcomed their son, Eissa Al Mana, on January 3 after nearly five years of marriage. After much deliberation over whether to have a lavish wedding, Jackson gave in to Al Mana?s demands for a simple and private ceremony, sources said. But Jackson was doing all the compromising ? with little give from the younger Al Mana, 41.
Jackson even quietly made London her home after Al Mana insisted the family live under strict Muslim custom, which included prohibiting the new mom from being seen in public while nursing the baby.
The last straw for the thrice married ?Control? singer was her husband?s reluctance to show concern for Katherine Jackson?s elder abuse claims against her nephew Trent. Katherine recently returned to Los Angeles after a two month stay in London with Janet.
?That?s when Janet made her decision that there was no turning back,? the source said. ?She was worried about her mother ? and Wissam showed little to no concern.?
Jackson is believed to be worth $250 million while Al Mana is a billionaire Qatari businessman. The source was not aware of any prenuptial agreement and declined to say whether Jackson would seek spousal or child support.
[From Page Six]
My guess is that none of this will really be an angle for money. Janet is plenty rich on her own, and I doubt their fights were about money at all, nor do I expect some divorce war to hinge on a financial settlement. No, it sounds like they were just incompatible when it came down to it – he wanted Janet to completely change her life, her work, her home and her faith. And what did he change? Probably nothing. All that being said, there could still be a divorce fight? but it will be about the baby, and custody, and how to raise the kid. Anyway? yeah, I?m surprised. Surprised that we?re even hearing about this!

| Freida Pinto is the lead in a series about black-power in '70s London, yikes | Added 7 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |
|
|
|
|
|
For a few weeks, Freida Pinto has been on a promotional tour for her new Showtime/Sky series called Guerrilla. The series was created and written by African-American producer/screenwriter John Ridley, who won an Oscar for the 12 Years a Slave screenplay. Ridley also created ABC?s American Crime, incidentally, and he seems to have made his post-Oscar career all about telling complicated stories about race and racial tensions. Well, Guerrilla focuses on racial tensions and the Black Power movement in the 1970s? in London. Here?s the trailer:
Do you see anything tricky and/or problematic here? I actually winced a little bit. It?s not that I dislike Freida Pinto, nor do I think she?s a bad actress. But if you?re going to make a movie about the Black Power movement? why cast an Indian actress as the lead? So, when they premiered the first episode in London last week, Ridley, Idris Elba and Freida all took part in a panel discussion after the premiere. And it did not go well. British outlets report that when London-based Black Lives Matter activists challenged Ridley and Pinto on her character, Freida was ?reduced to tears? and ?left stunned.? Ridley made the point that ?being called Black in the Seventies referred to all people of colour from former British colonies.? Which I didn?t know? Indians were called ?black? in Britain?? While Freida was too upset to answer questions, Ridley stuck around for an hour to discuss the series and why he made certain choices about race:
At the premiere of the Showtime/Sky civil rights drama Guerrilla on Thursday in London, the post-screening Q&A didn’t quite follow the usual, fluffy, congratulatory script. Several members of the audience at the Curzon Bloomsbury cinema reacted strongly to the character played by Freida Pinto, an Asian woman called Jas Mitra who finds herself at the militant heart of a movement battling racist elements of the British police force and legal system of the early 1970s.
“Why are there no black women at the forefront of the struggle?” asked one audience member. “That doesn’t necessarily accurately reflect what happened in the ’70s in the U.K.”
Another went so far as to suggest the writers of Guerrilla had, in putting an Asian women at the heart of the plot, overseen the “erasure of black women” from the story. Show creator, 12 Years a Slave writer John Ridley, responded by saying that should aspects of Guerrilla be difficult to understand or accept, “I feel I have done my job,” adding that if “everybody understood racism, oppression … there would be no reason to be doing this show … we would be doing Dancing With the Stars.”
But as the debate raged on, a visibly emotional Ridley, holding back tears, explained that the reason for choosing to have a mixed-race couple at the center of the story was because he was in a mixed race relationship himself.
“The things that are being said here, and how we are often received, is very equivalent to what’s going on right now in the world. My wife is a fighting, my wife is an activist, and yet because our races are different there are a lot of things we have to still put up with.”
The historical accuracy of Ridley’s decision was backed up by Neil Kenlock, seen as the British Black Power movement’s official photographer. “What John did was exactly spot on,” he said. “We had an Asian woman, and she was extremely active. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with what I’ve seen today.”
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter on Friday, Ridley explained how he fully expected Guerrilla, which also stars Idris Elba, Babou Ceesay and Rory Kinnear, to spark a debate.
“If you?re dealing with race, if you’re dealing with politics, if you?re dealing with people who have traditionally been considered ‘others,’ there is going to be someone, somewhere who is going to be upset about what you?re doing,” he said. “It?s not about agreement, it?s about allowing people in some way to have some thing that they can talk about, whether they agree or disagree … start a conversation.”
[From The Hollywood Reporter]
I think both sides have important points. One, it?s not like everything was amazing for Indians, Pakistanis and other racial minority groups in Britain at that time and of course there were many non-black allies, disrupters and activists in what was then called a ?Black Power? movement. It?s also important to represent the contributions made by those non-black activists, especially considering they were also racial minorities facing discrimination, violence and more. But on the other side? yes, this does feel like a significant erasure of black women. It feels like colorism and misogynoir to have an Indian woman as the lead of a series about a ?black power? movement. It would be like making a bio-pic of Rosa Parks and making Reese Witherspoon the lead of the film, starring as a white lady who once met Rosa Parks.
All that being said, I feel sorry for Freida a little bit. It?s difficult for an Indian actress to find a great role on a major TV series, just as it?s difficult for a black actress to find a great role on a major TV series. But Freida probably should have asked a few more questions about this, right?
