Margot Robbie went with Barbiecore for her BAFTA look, doing a black-and-pink custom Armani Priv gown with black gloves. People are really doing gloves a lot these days and you can tell the ladies are out of practice. No, honestly, Margot?s gloves look fine and I think Margot assumes that we want or expect her to wear Barbiecore throughout the entire awards season. Maybe that?s true? I don?t know. But it?s going to be quite an adjustment once this whole ride is over!
If Claire Foy is going to do one thing in this world, it?s wear something fringed. She has been wearing fringed ensembles for MONTHS. I guess it?s a minor trend, but also: she?s seeking it out. It?s pretty easy to avoid wearing this much fringe. This dress is also Armani Priv it would be lovely without the boob fringe, I?m sure.

Here are photos from the huge Dune 2 premiere in London last night. The whole cast turned out from the look of it, including ?surprise? cast member Anya Taylor Joy. There were rumors that Anya turned up at some point but her appearance at the premiere ended up confirming it. She dressed in her best sandworm chic, aka get-thee-to-a-nunnery Dior.
No one was paying attention to poor Anya though, not when Zendaya came to play. Zendaya did two different looks for the red carpet, first showing up in a robot ensemble. This is Mugler and yes, her ass cheeks were out when she turned around. It?s a lot of look, as Tim Gunn likes to say. It would feel more on-theme if Zendaya was playing a robot or someone robotic, but her character is a flesh-and-blood Dune resident (don?t ask me, I?m no expert). After the robot ensemble, she switched into a slinky black Mugler dress.
Zendaya?s sartorial shenanigans also overshadowed Florence Pugh, who I would argue was the actual best-dressed person there. Miss Flo wore this stunning Valentino with a hooded cowl neckline. I love it, I love everything about it it feels Dune-y and futuristic but it?s still just a beautiful dress, appropriate for a red/sand carpet. The color is gorgeous.
Other notable fashion moments: Timothee Chalamet wore Haider Ackermann. It?s meh, which is disappointing. His style had been so great at all of the photocalls, it makes me wonder if he or his stylist mixed up the looks and Timmy was supposed to wear this to the Paris photocall or something. Lea Seydoux wore a very boring Louis Vuitton, and Rebecca Ferguson wore an optical illusion (??) Fendi dress.

Did you know that Christian Dior had a baby sister who was a part of an underground group of the French Resistance during World War II? I didn?t! Her name was Catherine, she was the muse for her brother?s iconic Miss Dior perfume, and her full story was recounted in Justine Picardie?s novel Miss Dior: A Wartime Story of Courage and Couture, which has just been adapted into a 10-part series on Apple TV+. Renamed The New Look, Maisie Williams plays Miss Catherine Dior with Ben Mendelsohn as Christian Dior, Juliette Binoche as CoCo Chanel, and Glenn Close and John Malkovich rounding out the cast. Harper?s Bazaar UK got author Justine Picardie to interview Maisie ? the two never met during filming in 2022 ? about the punishing, very unglamorous task of depicting Catherine?s story on screen:
Again, the art of casting: At 26, Williams is the same age as Catherine Dior when she was arrested and tortured by the Gestapo in July 1944. Catherine had joined the Resistance three years earlier, and risked her life on a daily basis as a key member of a covert network called F2, which gathered intelligence for the Allies. Williams chooses her words with care when she speaks, in a way that I imagine Catherine would have done; and like Catherine, she is thoughtful, giving the impression of being wise for her years. (Nina Gold, the casting director for Game of Thrones, described Williams as an ?old soul? at the age of 12, when filming began on the series.)
On filming concentration camp scenes: ?It was very relentless,? she says; ?the process of doing take after take, it really breaks down your character in a way. It?s not for everyone, but for me, I like to get lost in a role, and keep on pushing until we complete a scene.?
This sounds very Joan of Arc: Even when Williams is almost wordless on screen ? and Catherine?s silence was integral to her courage, given that she refused to give the names of her comrades in the Resistance to the Gestapo, thereby saving their lives ? her presence is powerful, and propels the narrative onwards. And the physicality of Williams? performance is startling: her head was shaved, to mirror Catherine?s brutalising arrival at Ravensbrck, where the women underwent a dehumanising process that turned them into nameless numbers in the Nazi death camps. Williams also lost 12 kilograms [26.5 pounds], in order to realistically portray Catherine?s emaciated appearance when she returned to Paris at the end of the war, close to death, ravaged by pain and haunted by the suffering of the camps.
Her weight loss regimen was insane: This regime was carefully overseen by medical professionals, with regular blood tests and measurements of her heart rate; yet it sounds gruelling. ?I was eating very little, meditating all the time, burning candles and incense in my apartment.? Much of the weight loss, she says, came from sweating out fluid just before filming ? in the same way the boxers and jockeys reach their target weights for the day of a fight or race. ?I had to be up at 4am to start sweating. The night before, at about 7 or 8pm I was allowed to have something salty and dehydrating ? some smoked salmon and a tiny glass of wine. Then I had a boiling-hot bath with lots of salts in it. And I sort of levitated to bed and slept for maybe three hours, and woke up and had a handful of nuts. I wouldn?t be able to sleep through the night at this point. I kept waking up and feeling like a marble inside a bottle, rattling around??
What got her through the intensity: ?There was a lot of feeling restricted, almost like sleep paralysis, dreams of being trapped and attacked, and horrible visions of men in uniform.? At the same time, she adds, she understood the importance of maintaining her belief in the more positive aspects of the story. After all, Catherine Dior made a new life for herself as a rose-grower in Provence, drawing solace from the natural world, while her brother created a legacy of enduring beauty. ?Every day of filming was a reminder that we were portraying a story of the horrors that humans are capable of inflicting on one another, but also the magic and the hope and the love? Ultimately, we wanted to make a show that was uplifting.?

There?s a lot more covered in the full article, which was a very compelling read. In these excerpts on her acting preparation, I feel like Maisie gives pragmatic answers without dwelling on the torture of it all, as some actors are wont to do (I leave you to fill in those blanks). Maybe it?s a British quality, but she seems just to list the facts of what she did ? and quite eloquently, that line about being ?a marble inside a bottle, rattling around,? lingered with me ? yet without adding too much commentary on the cost of it. That being said, this was a severe physical transformation. 26.5 pounds may not sound like much, but Maisie is tiny! She can?t do something like this for every project, not to mention the weight loss components will get harder with age (I speak from experience). But what a fantastic role to land and redefine herself with post Game of Thrones. I?ll be tuning in. And not for nothing, I?m very curious to see how the dynamic is depicted between the siblings.

As many know, I have been a longtime supporter, promoter and enjoyer of all things Bennifer Redux. I rooted for them to get back together and I was beyond pleased when it all came together in 2021. In J.Lo?s mind, Ben Affleck was the one who got away. In Ben?s mind, he had a lot of regrets about how he cracked under the bright hot spotlight. They came back together when they were older and wiser. They seemed committed to not making the same mistakes as the first time around. They gave less of a fk about what people said about them. The culture changed too what was widely mocked in 2003 is celebrated in 2024. So, that?s where I was a longtime Bennifer Defender. I believed in them and I hoped that Ben wouldn?t fk it up. Guess what? Jennifer is the one fking it up.
These are photos from last night?s premiere of This Is Me? Now: A Love Story. That is the ?musical film? Jennifer produced alongside her new album of the same name. In her Variety cover story this week, Jennifer makes it clear that no one believed in this musical film, to the point where she had to self-finance to the tune of $20 million. Not only that, many of J.Lo?s longtime friends and allies were like ?girl, please don?t do this, this is absolutely bonkers and way too much.? Even Khloe Kardashian refused to take part in the musical. Ben appears in the musical, and the whole thing is about how it took her nearly 20 years to get back to him. Not only that, she did a documentary about their love!!
All of which to say, at the premiere, Ben seemed to be recreating some of the 2002-03 photos where he appeared trapped and looking for the exit ramp. Jennifer wore Zuhair Murad I don?t like this, but whatever, it?s not offensive. I really have a pit in my stomach about everything else though. I mean, maybe the reaction will be ?this is so camp, we love it.? But good lord, I wish J.Lo could just BE happily married and not have to make a musical film and a documentary about her fourth marriage.

The Friday before Ayo Edebiri hosted Saturday Night Live, with Jennifer Lopez as musical guest, TMZ unearthed a 2020 podcast interview from Ayo. Ayo appeared on the Scam Goddess pod and named Jennifer?s singing career as one of her favorite ?scams.? When I covered the issue, I thought that Ayo likely spoke to J.Lo directly at SNL. Jennifer confirms that?s exactly what happened in a bonkers new Variety cover story. Jen spoke to Variety about her three new projects: the album This Is Me? Now; the musical film This Is Me? Now: A Love Story; and a documentary called The Greatest Love Story Never Told. In case you didn?t realize it, J.Lo has well and truly lost the plot. We were so worried that Ben Affleck was going to fk up this marriage, but it?s Jennifer. She?s the one going way overboard in an attempt to celebrate her love for her fourth husband. Even Jane Fonda tried to talk her out of it, as did J.Lo?s longtime producing partner. Jennifer even put $20 million of her own money into financing these disasters. Some highlights from Variety:
Bennifer 1.0: ?Our relationship crumbled under the weight of the pressure. We lost a sense of ourselves, and we needed to separate because we didn?t know how to survive it. I had to figure myself out, and he had to figure himself out.? The first time Lopez was in love with Affleck, the crush of cameras took him away from her, leading her into multiple baffling relationships. This time, Lopez is turning the tables and seems intent on sharing every shred of their love while Affleck grudgingly follows along. In the documentary, Affleck says, ?Things that are private I always felt are sacred and special because, in part, they?re private.? He then delivers an understatement: ?So this was something of an adjustment for me.?
The musical film features a Zodiac Love Council: ?Everybody thought I was crazy,? she says with a loud laugh. ?And by the way, I thought I was crazy.? Joining Jane Fonda and Trevor Noah in a partly animated musical journey through many of the songs on ?This Is Me ? Now? are Post Malone, Sofia Vergara, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Keke Palmer and a few other famous randos. They?re all on that Zodiac love council examining Lopez?s romantic foibles. There is a special appearance by guru to the stars Sadhguru, which, according to the documentary, added $200,000 to the film?s budget. Affleck plays a wizened TV commentator.
Even Khloe Kardashian wanted no part of this disaster: Khlo Kardashian was among many Hollywood types who declined to appear in the film despite Lopez?s requests. The irony that an icon from the most photographed family didn?t want to appear in her film was not lost on Lopez, who looks downcast in the documentary. ?People are scared to put themselves out there,? she says on camera. ?I get it. It took me a long time. I?m scared. But I don?t act like I?m scared ? that?s the secret to my whole fking career.?
She needs to do all of this to start the next chapter?? ?I?ve been on this journey, and I?ve been trying to figure it out,? she says about her chronic quest for enduring love. ?Now I feel like because Ben and I have rediscovered each other ? and now that we?re married ? I have something to offer. This is the defining piece of work that?s going to close that chapter so I can move on to the next part of my life.?
She thinks the iconic ?Jenny From the Block? video was a mistake. ??Jenny From the Block? should have been me back in the Bronx kind of walking around the neighborhood. That?s what that video should have been.? Lawrence, she says, convinced her to ask Affleck to be in the video. ?We were so ourselves. And we never thought that people would take offense or be angry at us for kind of living out loud and making a cool video. We were so naive?.I don?t regret it. Even though it wound up turning out ugly for us in the media, it was very defining for me in my musical trajectory. Some very beautiful, iconic images came out of that video. It?s the one thing, no matter where I go people still go, ?Hey, there?s Jenny from the block.??
On Ayo Edebiri?s scam comments: ?She was mortified and very sweet,? says Lopez about talking to Edebiri backstage afterward. ?She came to my dressing room and apologized with tears in her eyes, saying how terrible it was that she had said those things. She felt really badly and loved my performance because we had just done my soundcheck and she actually got to hear me perform. She was just like, ?I?m so fking sorry, it was so awful of me.?? Lopez shrugs. ?It?s funny. I?ve heard similar things said about me throughout my career, so it really didn?t affect me.?

The Ayo story I mean, Jennifer was really making sure that everyone knows that Ayo was tearful and apologetic, which is a big choice. But I was on the side of ?Ayo should privately apologize? anyway regardless of your thoughts about J.Lo?s music career, it was a regrettable move for Ayo to trash someone famous, someone she might meet and work with some day. As Tina Fey said to Bowen Yang, ?Learn from my mistakes, learn from Ayo. Podcasts are forever. Authenticity is dangerous and expensive.? Talk about celebrities like they?re your future coworkers. Ayo learned that lesson.
As for Jennifer?s whole three-project mess these days? as Variety makes abundantly clear, absolutely no one in Jennifer?s life wanted any part of this. I think she could have gotten away with an album, for sure, and maybe spent some money making some fun music videos. But the musical film PLUS a documentary in which she?s dragging Ben around on camera? Come on. Jane Fonda was right this is way too much.

Here are some photos from Monday?s Oscar luncheon, always one of the nicest events on the awards-season calendar. There?s no real dress code other than ?look nice for this year?s class photo? and you get a nice lunch. There?s always a lot of media involved too. Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig both showed up, because they were nominated as producer and screenwriter, not lead actress and director. Margot wore a custom Chanel look which I don?t really like, but she?s still doing her Barbie-dressing and that?s cool. Greta looked terrible the black socks with the white pumps, I?m dying!!! WTF.
I?m including pics of Carey Mulligan (in a great black dress), Robert Downey Jr. (wearing lifts and snazzy pants), Emily Blunt (I love her ensemble but not her face work), Paul Giamatti, Ryan Gosling, Jeffrey Wright, Emma Stone (I?m sure her suit is Louis Vuitton), America Ferrera, Colman Domingo (easily the best-dressed man of the awards season) and Lily Gladstone. Here are some photos from the LA premiere of Madame Web. I?ve been waiting to see if they would do any big American premieres, and I guess this is all we?re getting, especially since the film comes out tomorrow. Don?t ask me to explain the structure or backstory of these characters, all I know is that Dakota Johnson plays Madame Web, a paramedic-turned-psychic crime fighter. Sydney Sweeney, Celeste OConnor and Isabela Merced play her friends/helpers and I think they have some special skills too. Sydney took this role just before she really blew up, and I kind of wonder if she regrets not holding out for something bigger from Marvel.
Fashion-wise, these ladies are MESSY. Dakota is repping her Gucci contract and this is not a serve. I get that she wanted something ?webbed? but I think she should have insisted that Gucci fully line the dress and not just give her a thonged bodysuit. Sydney?s Oscar de la Renta gown is much more suitable and spider-webby. Celeste O?Connor wore Gert-Johan Coetzee and Isabela Merced wore Versace. Bonus photo of Emma Roberts with very bad hair.

As soon as the Oscar nominations came out, the PR machine behind Oppenheimer made sure leading man and newly-minted Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy spoke to the press about what he was doing and how he was feeling when he got the good news. He was in Ireland enjoying his mother?s sponge cake, and the unsaid but apparent emotion he was feeling was dread at having to do more of the non-acting part of his job. Now a couple weeks later, his costar Emily Blunt is sharing her story. Talking to Josh Horowitz in New York this week, Emily deployed every ounce of Englishness she has as she described her whereabouts when she learned she?d gotten the first Oscar nomination of her career:
While [Emily Blunt] is ecstatic over her [Oscar] nod, she was in kind of a stinky position when she heard of the nomination.
The ?Devil Wears Prada? actress revealed that she was actually scooping up her dog?s poop when she was notified about the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nomination last month.
?It?s all quite scary, the anticipation of it, and I think you just try not to listen to buzz because buzz can be built on sand sometimes,? she said during a conversation with Josh Horowitz at 92NY on Tuesday.
?And so when it did happen, and when it happened in such a far-reaching way for all of us in the movie and every crew member, it was magical,? Blunt continued.
The film earned a whopping 13 nominations in total, including for Best Picture.
?I did have a brief cry in the middle of Brooklyn, brief weep directly after picking up my dog?s poop,? Blunt went on. ?I did pick up her poop and then I heard that I got nominated, so it was perfect.?
The British actress revealed that husband John Krasinski also ?had a really good cry as well, after helping me with the poop.?
?I think he went and put it in the trash, and then we both cried,? she recalled.

Imagine it: she could be sitting in the Dolby Theatre on March 10, dazzling in her designer gown, and all of a sudden she picks up wafts of poop odor. And it works the other way around too! Every time she bends down to collect a steaming pile of her pup?s poop, she?ll be reminded, ?I?m an Oscar nominee.? All that being said, if her hubby John Krasinski was with her and cried with her as she says? then why didn?t he pick up the poop for her?! They knew a call was coming from a publicist whether the news was good or bad, he could have assumed the morning?s sh*t duties. Next red carpet they do together, the lip readers might want to check if it?s Emily this time talking about wanting to divorce John, just sayin?.

I missed posting these photos from last weekend?s Brazilian premiere of Madame Web. Dakota Johnson apparently flew down solo to do a premiere event in Rio. She wore a custom ?spider web? dress from Annie?s Ibiza, and the craftsmanship of the dress is very pretty. That being said, I mean? Zendaya did it better when she was promoting Spider-Man, all of those years ago.
Anyway, Dakota is obviously all over the news and gossip for her Madame Web promotion. She?s talking about how people shouldn?t call her a nepo baby! She?s talking about how she doesn?t understand the one meme from the film, the ?he was in the Amazon with my mom when she was researching spiders right before she died? line. She?s also talking about one of her rare TV roles, when she appeared in The Office?s finale.
Dakota Johnson hilariously reminisced with Seth Meyers on ?Late Night? about their appearances on the ?The Office? series finale, which aired on NBC in May 2013. Johnson, who was still years out at the time from her breakthrough in the ?Fifty Shades? franchise, appeared as a new accountant named Dakota. Meyers, meanwhile, was seen on a television doing a fictional version of ?Weekend Update? from ?Saturday Night Live.? Johnson was a big fan of ?The Office,? so she jumped at the chance to be a guest star on the last episode.
?That was honestly the worst time of my life,? Johnson quipped. ?They were like, ?Do you want to be in the series finale?? And I was like, ?Of course,? thinking that I?d show up for like half a day. I was there for two weeks. And I?m barely in the fking show.?
Asked by Meyers if it was sad being on the set for the last episode, Johnson answered: ?There were weird dynamics that had been going on for the last 10 years. Some people didn?t speak to each other. And I?m coming in like ?So excited to be here!? No one wanted to talk to me. No one gave a fk?I was like in the background of all of these scenes, faxing things.?

I mean, Mindy Kaling has said/indicated as much, that after so long on the air, there were a lot of internal politics in The Office and some beefs and such. Plus, it was the finale! You can?t expect to come in as a new person for the finale and expect them to roll out the red carpet. Anyway, I didn?t expect Dakota to go that hard about her experience but it is what it is. I?m sure The Office fans will be mad at her.
