Best Performance by an Actress in a Union-Supporting Role 2023 goes to Jessica Chastain. Throughout the SAG-AFTRA strike, Jessica was articulate on the issues at stake and why they were vital to working actors. She also had more opportunity to talk than her fellow thesps, as her latest film, Memory, received an interim agreement which allowed her to attend film festivals and give interviews. She dutifully explained how waivers worked and asked if independent studios could meet actors? needs, then why couldn?t AMPTP? Now that the SAG-AFTRA strike is over, Jessica is touting all that?s good about the new contract. She?s currently serving as jury president at the Marrakech International Film Festival (where Memory is screening but not in competition) and talked to reporters about the film and the new deal:
Fair and just and historic: ?I?m glad that our SAG leadership has gotten to a deal they think is fair and just and historic in its own right,? said Chastain on the red carpet? ?We?re still waiting to find out what the voters are going to choose ? if they?re going to ratify the contract. I?ve looked through it. I do think personally it?s a good deal, but of course, I only have one vote. It?s important to me what everyone else thinks as well. The beautiful thing about taking a vote is that everyone gets to have a say,? she told a reporter with Deadline.
Hollywood strike poster girl: Asked if she had planned to be the poster girl for Hollywood strikes, she said that she was put in that position by accident, and the move wasn?t orchestrated. ?I became public by default ? I didn?t choose to be so public about it. It just so happened because my film had an interim agreement, and because so many actors were nervous, I think, to speak out, I just ended up being one of the first, and I think when you end up being one of the first in that case, you really have a big spotlight on yourself,? she said.
An actor prepares: ?I did my homework. I spoke to the leadership at SAG. I asked them, ?How can I best support this acting community?? because SAG is the most important community that I?ve ever been a part of. I would never want to do anything against them, and I only wanted to support them. It was kind of like I became public by default, but I was very happy to support in every way I could.?
Working with Memory director Michel Franco: ?The way Michel works is transfixing. He shoots in a way where you feel as a voyeur rather than an audience falling into a scene ? He doesn?t cut within a scene. Actors are given the freedom of doing whatever we feel like. While we stick to the script, everything is done in one take ? It is like doing theatre where you get freedom, creativity, and inspiration,? said Chastain.

I have to confess that my aunt cant stand Jessica Chastain! I think it started when Jessica won the Critics Choice Award for Zero Dark Thirty in 2013 and quoted Bertolt Brecht. (Which was so silly to me, because if I were to hate Jessica Chastain it would be for her having natural red hair, my dream.) Jessica was exceedingly earnest back then, but remember, she was just breaking through after years and years of being broke on the sidelines. But all of that is why she was the perfect ?poster girl? for the strike ? she knows the cost of building a career from the ground up. She?s been there, having had no connections or family in the industry. And now that she?s comfortable, she loves nothing more than to advocate for her peers on the other side of that trajectory. Still earnest, but also just good, clean kindness. Backed by a killer wardrobe.

Here are some photos of Jessica Chastain on Day 4 of the San Sebastian Film Festival. Chastain is one of the few Hollywood actors doing the late-summer/early-fall festival circuit. Most actors are prohibited from the festival circuit because of the SAG strike, but Jessica?s film, Memory, got a waiver. She went to Venice, Toronto and now San Sebastian.
So, she?s been on the road for a while and I guess her stylist packed a lot of different gowns and casual looks. If her stylist chose this one? well? Jess might need to invest in someone else. I cannot get over how completely terrible this whole ensemble is. The absolutely horrendous Sara Battaglia yellow suit with those god-awful platform sneakers. Like, I?m sure this is all very expensive. Hell, it might even be really comfortable? but at what cost. I honestly can?t get off the ?cuff? of those pants, my God.
Meanwhile, Jessica only loves one other actor as much as she loves Oscar Isaac that man is Jeremy Strong. Strong and Chastain have known each other for decades, and she posted this a few days ago dancing to Madonna while they attended an event in Milan!

Here are some photos of Jessica Chastain and Peter Saarsgard at the Venice Film Festival, where they premiered and promoted their latest film, Memory. At the photocall, Jessica wore a ?SAG-AFTRA on Strike? t-shirt while Peter wore a pin. At the premiere, Jessica went full showgirl in a bronze, sequined Gucci gown. She said I?m here to PROMOTE. Jessica?s style has improved so much in the past five years or so I sort of give some credit to her fashionable Italian husband.
Memory got a SAG-AFTRA waiver, which means that Jessica and Peter are not only free to promote the film, their union is actively encouraging them to do a lot of press and talk about why the waivers are a good thing and why their union is on strike. Jessica did just that:
Jessica Chastain made an impassioned appeal to U.S. actors, urging them to promote indie movies on Friday at the Venice Film Festival press conference for Michel Franco?s drama ?Memory.?
?I was very nervous about coming,? said Chastain, who was wearing a black ?SAG-AFTRA on Strike? T-Shirt, revealing that ?there were actually some people on my team who advised me against it.? Chastain then noted that actors are ?often made to keep quiet in order to protect future working opportunities, and we are often told and reminded how grateful we should be. And that is the environment that I think has allowed work to be abused, to go unchecked for many decades. And is also the environment that has saddled members of our union with unfair contracts.?
Since ?Memory? obtained an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA, Chastain and co-star Peter Sarsgaard were present at the press conference.
?I am here because SAG-AFTRA has been explicitly clear that the way to support the strike is to post on social media, walk the picket line and to work and support interim agreement projects,? she said. ?It?s what out national board, negotiating committee and our elected leadership has asked us to do.? Chastain continued, ?The independent producers, like the ones here, are letting the AMPTP know that actors deserve fair compensation, that AI protection should be implemented, and there should be sharing of streaming revenues. I hope my being here today encourages other independent producers, and encourages actors to show up [at festivals] and support our union members. Hopefully we will see an end to the strike soon and hopefully AMPTP will go back to the table.?

I think it?s kind of amazing how the SAG waivers have worked out when it comes to the film festivals you?ve got actors and writers attending the festivals solely to promote waivered productions, and giving voice to their unions? talking points in front of a global media. This ?waiver? gamble really worked out.

No joke, one of my favorite things about this year?s Met Gala theme was seeing how other designers interpreted Karl Lagerfeld?s work and aesthetic. Certain designers phoned it in, others killed it. Sabato De Sarno is the new creative director of Gucci (appointed late last year) and he dressed a lot of people at this year?s gala, and the looks were so interesting! The best of the Gucci girls, in my opinion, was Jessica Chastain. No one knows if she wore a blond wig or if she really blonded her famous red hair, but the color is perfect. She also wore sunglasses (like Lagerfeld) and her makeup was so good. The effect was perfect.
Julia Garner recently scored a Gucci ambassadorship. I loved the velvet cape, perfectly structured in the shoulders, with the Pink on the other side. The satin dress is a perfect homage to Lagerfeld too.

Salma Hayek in Gucci I love the lace, ruffles, tulle and pearl combo. A great interpretation.

Here are some photos from Saturday night?s Academy Museum Gala. I remember this event last year, it was really nice. The ?academy? in question is AMPAS, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and the now-annual museum gala is a who?s who of Hollywood A-listers. I think this event pretty much marks the beginning of the Oscar season at this point. There were tons of would-be Oscar campaigners getting some face-time with Oscar voters, and getting their names out there.
Jessica Chastain is the reigning Best Actress Oscar winner, and she came out in this lovely Oscar de la Renta caped gown. She looked stunning! I feel like very few women do florals in fall, but she was a breath of fresh air at this event.
Amal and George Clooney came out. Amal wore Del Core and it?s fine. I like the combination of her olive skin with the crisp white and green. I wish her posture was better, she?s always slouching.
Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz, with Nicola in Givenchy. A little bit too conservative and plain, in my opinion. Even if she wanted to go simple and minimalist with the design, I would have gone with a different color. And no gloves.
Lily Collins in Dior. Hilariously bad, from head to toe. I love her (I really do, I think she?s funny/cute) but holy hell, her personal style is outlandishly bad.
Alexandra Daddario in Dior. I actually kind of like this? I wouldn?t wear it, but its an elevated sack dress and it looks cool on her.
Kaitlyn Dever in Dior. Like Nicola Peltz, it?s too ?old? and conservative for someone so young. I get that these younger women want to veer towards more conservative looks for this event, but this honestly looks like something for Rita Wilson.
Hailey Bieber in Saint Laurent. Man, I dislike cut-outs and ?midriff dresses? but whatever. Some women can pull it off and I guess Hailey is coming close. It makes her look really tall (and she?s not that tall).
Mindy Kaling in Naeem Khan, with her date BJ Novak. First of all, Mindy looks incredible she?s lost weight and this gown is so flattering on her. Second of all, I despise their relationship. I feel like he?s such a user. Hate hate hate.

Jessica Chastain grew up in a poor, working class family in Sacramento, California. Her parents were teenagers when they had Jessica, and she barely knew her biological father. She and her siblings were raised by her mother, stepfather and grandmother. She ended up going to Julliard and having a great career as an actress and producer, and she?s now married into a wealthy and aristocratic Italian family. She welcomed her first child when she was 41 years old (in 2018) and her second child at 43. Jessica is (understandably) squirrelly about her background and you can tell that she knows that her poor, working class roots are not how most people got into Hollywood. She spoke about all of this and more in a recent interview with the Times of London:
Growing up poor: Chastain admits she ?grew up with a lot of resentment? due to her childhood in poverty. ?I don?t talk about it much, but it was really, um, it was not what you would expect. When people see me, I think they expect a different background than I have. So because I come from that place, I know what it?s like. And it makes me angry. And I don?t [want] anyone else to be denied anything. In terms of a voice, being seen, being acknowledged and valued.?
She worked all the way through Julliard: ?There were people that saw I was struggling as a kid and they helped me. And that?s why I ended up where I am now.?
She got help from Planned Parenthood in her youth. I?m the first person in my family to not be pregnant when I was 17. It had a great impact on my life because it gave me choice, she said of the organisation, which was her source for birth control.
On the importance of fathers: ?Right now, as a society, I don?t believe we value fathers as much as we should. I think we have to understand that ? and this is tough as a woman to say this ? the father relationship is just as important as the mother relationship. And men need to acknowledge that women are just as important in the workforce.
On seeing Chris Hemsworth feel devastated when he was unable to make it home for his childrens bedtimes. And this was way before I got married and all of that. I remember seeing that and thinking, When we?re on set for 16 hours a day, why isn?t there a set-up so people can be with their children? We should get to the place where men are able to admit that and society sees it as a strength.

It?s amazing that Jessica was able to escape all of the poverty traps set to keep her marginalized: restricted access to health care, restricted access to quality education, no generational wealth. I would be resentful too hell, I grew up solidly middle class and I?m resentful of how wasteful the ?elites? are. Jessica was probably around all of those rich kids and she wanted to scream in their faces the whole time. As for the importance of fathers? I agree that good fatherhood, hands-on fatherhood, is not seen as desirable or expected for most men. And that should change.

There have been numerous books and documentaries about the life and times of Jim Bakker and Tammy Faye Bakker. Jim Bakker was sort of a children?s program host-turned-televangelist, and Tammy Faye was his wife, and a singer and co-televangelist. She was famous in the 1980s for her heavy makeup, sky-high hair and her Dynasty-era ?glamour.? But she was also known as one of the few ?right-wing? figures who refused to demonize the gay community. The Bakkers were very much part of Jerry Falwell?s ?religious right? movement in the late 1970s and 1980s. It was a movement which turned reproductive rights and human rights into political wedge issues weaponized by Republicans. But while Ronald Reagan was ignoring the AIDS crisis and Falwell was gay-bashing from the pulpit every week, Tammy Faye refused to play that game. And the gay community loved her for it.
In 2000, there was a documentary called The Eyes of Tammy Faye, all about Tammy Faye?s life and time. Now there?s a feature film, with Jessica Chastain as Tammy Faye and Andrew Garfield as Jim Bakker. Here?s the trailer:
I think one of the gifts America has given to the world is that regional Minnesota accent. Everyone loves it. It?s such an incredibly specific accent and Jessica nails it. There?s already a lot of talk about the prosthetics used on Chastain?s face to give her Tammy Faye?s particular look? in some of the clips, the prosthetics look pretty noticeable and distracting, but in other scenes, it looks fine. I?m sure people will be able to forget about it and be absorbed in the drama in a few minutes. The combination of the accent + face prosthetics + ?80s glamour definitely equals Oscar, you know that right? Finally, Lady Chastain will have an Oscar! I wouldn?t be surprised if Andrew Garfield gets nominated too, his Jim Bakker looks pretty authentic.

Jessica Chastain has a really amazing life, but she does it quietly. She dated a rich, handsome Italian man named Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo without much attention. They had a lavish Italian wedding in 2017 and I don?t think we?ve ever seen her wedding gown? Then in 2018, they welcomed a baby via surrogacy and the whole thing wasn?t confirmed until four months after the baby?s birth. And it?s happened again Jessica and Gian are currently in Los Angeles, and they stepped out for a walk in Santa Monica, and Jessica was wearing one of those baby carriers. The baby looks tiny too, like a newborn. Page Six says it appears as if Jessica and Gian have welcomed their second child via surrogacy:

The actress, 43, was photographed holding an infant in a carrier on her chest during a family stroll in Santa Monica, Calif., on Wednesday.Her 38-year-old husband walked beside her as he pushed their daughter Giulietta as well as their dog in a stroller.
?They were really enjoying themselves,? a spy told Page Six. ?The baby seemed to be sleeping soundly the entire time.?
Page Six exclusively revealed the couple welcomed Giulietta via surrogate in November 2018.

I think Jessica is a mother of two! And she did it with zero gossip, it can be done. Congrats to Jessica and Gian and their two kids! I wonder if they had another girl or a boy this time? And why are they in LA? Gian must be going out of his mind, not being able to return to Italy right now during the pandemic. I hope Gian?s family and friends in Italy are okay he?s very well-connected and Italy has been devastated by the virus.
