Scarlett Johansson is not covered in teflon, but she has an uncanny knack for giving terrible interviews, saying wildly offensive things and just moving on like nothing happened. And almost everyone moves on too. Is it some kind of hot-woman privilege or is it specific to ScarJo? Well, Scarlett is currently promoting her directorial debut, Eleanor the Great. Scarlett directed June Squibb in the lead, for a movie about a woman who pretends to have survived the Holocaust so she can make friends in a New York-based support group. The Telegraph spoke to Scarlett about the script, how the project almost fell apart and how she still supports Woody Allen.
She lost a major backer a month before filming: One of Johansson?s financial backers got in touch with a stipulation regarding the script. The gist of it? Love the film, Scarlett, but we?re not so keen on the whole Holocaust thing. Can we have the character lie about something else? The demand came ?after months of preparatory work?, Johansson recalls, despairingly. ?I mean, if they?d said ?I?ll only back this if you shoot in New Jersey,? or ?We need to get this done by the spring?, then that would have been one thing. But they were objecting to what the film actually was. It had to be about what happens when someone gets caught in the worst lie imaginable; if not the Holocaust, then what could it be? They offered no alternative. It was just, ?This is an issue.??
Suing Disney over a contractual pay dispute: The studio settled two months later for a reported $40m, stating that it was already looking forward to working with Johansson again ?on a number of upcoming projects?. What does she think of her colleagues? resounding silence? ?I mean, it would be great to have more support from the community and my peers ? vocally, publicly ? on certain issues that affect the entire industry. It?s always helpful to have more voices, you guys!? Having said that, even in cases where she is pretty much a lone voice, speaking out ?can still be really effective?. The Marvel pay spat, she adds, was a good example. ?As we moved from the model of theatrical box-office bonuses to understanding how that translated to streaming, it had just become this nebulous thing, with no guidelines around it. So to be able to impact that moves everything in the right direction. But yes, I would welcome more support.?
Whether supporting Woody Allen affected her career: ?I guess it?s hard to know. You never know what the domino effect is, exactly. But my mom always encouraged me to be myself, [to see] that it?s important to have integrity, and stand up for what you believe in. At the same time, I think it?s also important to know when it?s not your turn. I don?t mean that you should silence yourself. I mean sometimes it?s just not your time. And that?s something I?ve understood more as I?ve matured.?
How Hollywood is still tough for women: ?I think it?s still tough. There have always been great roles in Hollywood for women. But the standards are tough. In general, there?s so much more expected of female actors. If a female actor had experienced, let?s say, a huge addiction, or a public fall from grace, the road to getting back for them is almost impossible to pave, right? Whereas for men, it?s just another dramatic twist in the story, and then it?s on to the comeback. For men, it can be almost heroic. But for women, it?s like you just disappear.?
Scarlett actually recorded real Holocaust survivors? stories for the film: Given the nature of Eleanor?s lies ? which, smartly, are never actually shown; the camera always cuts back to Bessie?s own, truthful testimony ? Johansson wanted to make sure she didn?t err in matters of taste, or worse. She seems especially proud that each member of the film?s support group is played by someone who, in real life, would have every right to be there, at a time when only around 245,000 survivors are still alive worldwide, and misinformation and outright denial is on the rise. They were, she says, ?an amazing group. But it took work to identify people who were both willing and able to participate.?

I think the Woody thing has become so distasteful/toxic to the point where people don?t even want to acknowledge when an actor has previously supported Woody. When Diane Keaton passed, there were some references to her defense of Woody, but most people were like ?eh, it?s complicated.? Same with Cate Blanchett, Penelope Cruz and several others who never really cut ties or apologized for working with him. I?m actually surprised Scarlett even bothered to comment, but as I said she?s made of teflon to a certain extent.
The Disney stuff was a rare moment when I was 100% on her side. Disney fought back against her lawsuit in a really wild, sexist, patronizing way, and Scarlett got some really sympathetic coverage for standing up to Hollywood?s Goliath. Disney?s initial misread of the situation was a huge reason why they settled with Scarlett within a few months as well.

I personally haven?t paid attention to Gwen Stefani since March of this year, when she seemingly played around with going MAGA or tried to appeal to the MAGAts. It was a weird moment and I still don?t really understand what?s going on with Gwen politically. For years now, assumptions have been made about Blake Shelton and his politics, and how Gwen has likely become more conservative within their marriage. She?s exactly the type to adopt her husband?s political views too, that?s all I?ll say!
Well, in recent weeks, there were tabloid stories about the Shelton-Stefani marriage and whether they were on the rocks. While I doubt everything is sunshine and roses 24-7, I also doubt that Blake and Gwen will ever fall apart. Star Magazine claimed, two weeks ago, that people have been worried about their marriage ever since Blake and Gwen released the single ?Hangin? On,? which is clearly about breaking up. Blake and Gwen have fewer date nights, and they?ve been skipping joint public appearances and red carpets for months. Something about ?separate lives.? They even made a point of skipping the CMAs.
Right on cue, after those rumors circulated for weeks, Gwen posted a Thanksgiving selfie with Blake, showing that they?re still loved up, I guess. My read on this whole situation? I think if they break up, it will be because Blake wants out, and I don?t think he currently wants out. He?s very happy with Gwen and her sons. I would argue that they?re probably well over the honeymoon phase and, sure, they aren?t connected at the hip. But I honestly believe that Blake has put a lot of his career on the back burner to be at home with Gwen and the boys.

The whole thing felt weird, but this entire coupling and courtship has felt completely bizarre and performative. What?s even funnier is that Team Katy and Team Justin are narrating this courtship in the gossip media. We?ve been told that Justin really likes Katy and that he?s pursuing her, even traveling to multiple countries to get to her. We?re told that Katy appreciates his effort and she?s flattered by his pursuit. We?re told that Justin likes Katy for her mind, which is the biggest joke of all. Well, they?re still doing this. They?re making plans together for the holidays.
Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau are preparing to spend some downtime together. After the pop star, 41, and the former prime minister, 53, were initially spotted spending time together in July, the pair have grown closer and are planning for the upcoming festive season.
Now, a source close to Perry tells PEOPLE, on Thursday, Nov. 20, that the pair are making plans for the holidays.
However, the source notes, that Perry is really looking forward to wrapping her tour.
Without exaggeration, this year has been a whirlwind for her, the source adds. She hasnt even had time to really think about her life after the tour.
According to the source, Perry ? who split from ex-fianc, Orlando Bloom earlier this year ? will be focusing on her 5-year-old daughter Daisy Dove, whom she shares with The Lord of the Rings actor, 48.
Shes a single mom now and a lot of that is going to come into focus next year, says the source.
The same source told PEOPLE on Wednesday, Nov. 19 that the couple are spending time together when they can.
Justin keeps making a big effort to see her and shes excited about it, the source told PEOPLE, noting that Perry has a lot of fun with him. The source added that their romance is exactly what she needs right now.

For the Royal Variety performance on Wednesday, the Princess of Wales wore a new-to-us Talbot Runhof dress. Talbot Runhof is the design collaboration between Adrian Runhof (a German) and Johnny Talbot (an American). It was interesting that Kate didn?t go with a repeat, and it looks like this gown has been in her closet for years, because the designers confirmed that they had no idea she owned this and it?s a few years old. The designers sounded happy about it, even though ?the Kate Effect? is struggling pretty hard these days, with so many of Kate?s favorite labels going out of business or dramatically downsizing.
Kate Middletons latest red carpet moment was two years in the making, but the designers behind her velvet green dress only got a quick heads-up! Adrian Runhof ? co-founder and designer at Talbot Runhof, the brand behind the Princess of Wales outfit choice for the Royal Variety Performance on Nov. 19 ? tells PEOPLE exclusively that the palace notified them that shed be wearing their dress about 30 minutes before the royals appearance.
Two hours later, our name and our dress have been posted worldwide, so we are very thankful to her, he says. We think she is great, we respect her and it?s a great honor for us that she picked this dress, that she obviously liked it enough to buy it and select it for the event last night.
Runhof ? whose celebrity fans include Selena Gomez, Helen Mirren and Oprah Winfrey ? explains that the classic dress has been in their collection for many seasons, and he believes that Princess Kate, 43, purchased it through a department store.
I think she bought it a few seasons ago and found it in her wardrobe and thought, Why don?t I wear this? Its so beautiful, he tells PEOPLE, adding that Kate looked impeccable.
The designer adds, We focus on making beautiful dresses, that?s what we do. I think the dress spoke to her. I doubt she knows who we even are, but she fell in love with it, and maybe that?s how it should be.
Runhof says the secret to their dresses is their feminine and flattering fit, adding that there was an extra bonus to Princess Kates choice. The best thing is that it?s a wonderful stretch velvet, so it feels as comfortable as a pair of pajamas! he explains.
Twenty-five years ago, American Johnny Talbot and German Runhof started the brand, quickly discovered by Georgio Beverly Hills, a store that used to exist in Los Angeles that was a popular spot for celebrities hitting the red carpet.
The Princess of Wales dress choice may hint that shes considering the brand for the upcoming state visit to the U.K. by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and first lady Frau Elke Bdenbender. We are very excited to hear about it when it happens, Runhof tells PEOPLE, adding that the German first lady owns many of their dresses. She might be wearing one when she comes to the U.K. in December, too!

The Telegraph also devoted an article to glazing Kate for her ?pre-diplomatic dressing? by choosing a German designer, all because of the upcoming state visit by Chancellor Steinmeier. The Telegraph also bizarrely claims that this dress is ?no longer available to buy, indicating just how far in advance the Princess and her team plans for these engagements.? Does anyone actually think that Kate purchased this dress two years ago and thought ?this will be good for the 2025 Royal Variety show?? No. Kate used to shop and shop and shop and she has a closet full of clothes she?s never worn. And that?s probably why it feels like her clothing allowance has been cut so dramatically in the past two years as well, and why she tried to make a big deal about how her office would no longer talk about her fashion.

The Princess of Wales only had one event last week, during the actual ?work week.? The poor keen sausage was exhausted from attending two events over the weekend the Festival of Remembrance and Remembrance Sunday. She visited the National Memorial Arboretum on Armistice Day (last Tuesday) and that was that. Of course, we also ?saw? Kate in her Autumn video in her ?Mother Nature? series over the weekend. That counts as work for Kate as well, for some reason. Well, good news Kate will work at least one day this week. She and Prince William will attend the Royal Variety show on Wednesday.
Kate Middleton and Prince William are all set for a date night. The Prince and Princess of Wales will don their best outfits as they attend an annual glitzy pre-holiday show on Wednesday Nov. 19.
The couple, both 43, will get in the mood for the holiday when they are the guests of honor at this year?s Royal Variety Performance, which is being held at the Royal Albert Hall, a short drive from their London home, Kensington Palace.
The show benefits the Royal Variety Charity, which supports those who have worked professionally in the entertainment world. Since 2024, particular attention has been given by the charity to those who are in need of help due to mental health challenges ? an area that is close to the hearts of both Kate and William.
The evening will be hosted by British comedian Jason Manford and is set to include a flavor of some of the current top-level shows onstage in the West End. The royal couple will be hoping they arent the subject of some of the jokes ? as they have been in the past.

In 2023, the Royal Variety show was one of Kate?s last public appearances before her months-long disappearance. I hope we?re not getting a repeat of that. But it?s interesting as well that they?re back to letting Kate go outside in the evenings. For well over a year, it felt like Kate was banned from evening events or any event where she might wear a tiara or a gown. But they?re back to allowing her to attend state dinners and the like. I?m curious to see if she attends the diplomatic reception as well she skipped it last year, and there was a curious silence around her absence. William and Kate also skipped the BAFTAs this year (another evening event) and the V-J Day commemoration event over the summer.
Meanwhile, the BBC apologized for calling her ?Kate Middleton? on air during a Remembrance event. There were apparently complaints from royalists that anchors still use Kate?s maiden name, and that no one refers to her as ?Catherine? either. Honestly, it?s an SEO thing, it?s not about respect or disrespect.

Ali Larter is currently co-starring in Taylor Sheridan?s (creator of Yellowstone, et. al) ?new? Paramount+ series, Landman. I call it ?new? because while it?s about to start its second season on Sunday, it?s not set in the Yellowstone universe. It?s actually based off a podcast about the oil industry in Texas called Boomtown. Landman also stars Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, and a huge ensemble cast.
Ali plays Billy Bob?s ex-wife, Angela, a role that requires her to wear a lot of sexy outfits, including low-cut, skin-tight dresses and bikinis. This past spring, Ali had to defend Angela?s sensuality and wardrobe, saying, ?If there was something I was uncomfortable with, I wouldn?t do it.? To promote the second season, Ali did an interview with People. When asked about her fitness routine, she was honest about how much work goes into maintaining her physique.
Ill tell you what. I work really hard, okay? Im not pretending that I dont, she tells PEOPLE in this weeks issue. Im up at 4:30 [a.m.] on Mondays. I go for a run. Its only 30 minutes. I try to eat very clean, but I eat. Im one of those protein mommies. I eat so much protein all day long. It works for me.
On top of morning runs, Larter does a lot of strength training, but the physical training is ultimately only one piece of the puzzle for her.
In the end, anytime you have to put on a bathing suit and walk in front of anybody, its really difficult, she admits. When I look around, the sexiest women I know are the women that own it. So part of getting there with Angela is owning it.
Once she enters the zone for a scene as Angela, particularly one where she might feel more exposed given her outfit, Larter says, There is no space in my mind for insecurity. Im not allowing any of that into my space when I play Angela.
Adding, I wouldnt be able to do it if I allowed insecurity to creep in. And I really do believe, sexiness ? yeah, shes sexy on the outside, but guess what? Shes owning it on the inside, too.
Larter admits that when shes not filming the show in Fort Worth, Texas alongside costars Demi Moore, Michelle Randolph, Jacob Lofland and Kayla Wallace, she takes her time off seriously. I fall apart on the weekends. I lay in bed, sometimes 12 hours, she says. Im not kidding you.

Ali?s hard work is certainly paying off because she looks absolutely fantastic. If I looked like that at 49, I?d be bragging to People magazine, too. I?ve always been a sucker for celebrity fitness stories and it?s refreshing to hear an actress admit that she works her ass off to look a certain way rather than give the ol? ?It?s good genes; I eat whatever I want!? line. I?ve been in an exercising slump for the last month or so. I got bored with all of my go-to workouts and just fell off the wagon. Ali?s inspiring me to get back into a good fitness routine again. I also love that she admits to enjoying her days off by lying in bed for 12 hours. Rest and relaxation are good for the soul. In the same interview, Ali also admitted that while walking around in a bikini on set could be ?really difficult,? she thinks the key to true sexiness is to ?own it? by feeling comfortable in your own skin. She is so right about that. Self-confidence is very sexy.
Oh, and Sheridan is the new ?it? showrunner, isn?t he? All of his shows have ensembles made up of big name casts. Like Shonda Rhimes, Ryan Murphy, David E. Kelley, and Aaron Sorkin before him, it seems like everyone wants to be cast in his shows.

Tom Cruise gave Dakota Fanning her first cell phone for her 11th birthday, a Motorola Razr, after Dakota played his daughter in the 2005 War of the Worlds remake. In the 20 years since, however, Tom has marked Dakota?s birthday each and every year by gifting her a pair of shoes. As far as I can tell, Dakota is the only colleague who gets a new pair of shoes for her birthday, instead of receiving the infamous Christmas coconut cake delivery, courtesy of Tom. Why? Quirks/anomalies like these fascinate me! And I?m not the only one fascinated by the yearly shoe drop: Dakota was on Watch What Happens Live last week to promote her new series All Her Fault, and host Andy Cohen asked if Tom is still keeping up with the tradition. (Yes, he is.) Sitting in the other guest chair was Brittany Snow, who was similarly intrigued:

Fanning, 31, told Andy Cohen as much during her Thursday, Nov. 6, appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Brittany Snow, as [Dakota] promotes her new Peacock series All Her Fault. Cohen, 57, referenced Fanning?s previous statements that Cruise has given her shoes for her birthday in the past and asked if it was still a tradition for the A-list actor when Fannings birthday rolls around each February.
?Yes, he does,? Fanning, who worked with Cruise when she was a child actor in 2005?s War of the Worlds, responded. ?Yes, he does.?
?Really nice shoes, yes,? she added, when Cohen asked her to clarify ?what kind of shoes? Cruise sends her.
?I have so many questions,? Snow, 39, told her fellow actress, and Fanning responded, ?It?s really as simple as that. He?s just always given me shoes.?
?But are they nice shoes, are they sneakers? Or are they like??? Snow asked. ?They?re nice shoes,? Fanning explained. When Snow asked whether Cruise knows if Fanning?s shoe size has changed over the years, she added, ?It has changed over the years and he?s adapted. He?s adapted.?
?Shoes are not the only gift Cruise has given Fanning over the years. In April 2024, Fanning said in an interview with Harper?s BAZAAR that Cruise actually gave her her first cell phone ? a Motorola Razr ? for her 11th birthday. ?I loved having it. I loved it. I felt so cool,? she said, noting that Cruise has always sent her gifts on her birthday each year since then.

I found it hilarious (and a little curious) that Dakota wouldn?t elaborate beyond, ?They?re really nice shoes.? Like Brittany, I?m brimming with questions. Does Dakota wear these shoes to red carpet events? Are they Hokas? (Because sneakers can be nice, too!) By what means exactly does Tom keep abreast of Dakota?s current shoe size? My bigger burning questions, though, are more macro. Again, what accounts for the diversion from Christmas cake to birthday shoes? Also ? and answer honestly ? if any other male coworker were annually gifting shoes to their decades younger female colleague starting from when she was a preteen, would it not be giving us the ick? And yet the man at the top of a cult has seemingly cultivated a Nice Guy shield? Dakota met Tom when she was a kid, which informs her experience of Tom and how she feels about him. I don?t hold anything against her if he?s still a positive figure for her, based on that history. Speaking for my own sassy ass, though, I?d send the shoes back with a note that says, ?Where?s Shelly??

Here are photos from last night?s huge London premiere for Wicked: For Good. They were in Paris over the weekend for a premiere and photocall, but those photos didn?t make a huge impact. This London premiere feels like the REAL start of the promotional cycle, honestly. Anyway, while I?m not going to see this in theaters, I wish them well and I?ll check it out as a rental, like I did with the first film. I enjoyed the first one much more than I expected to, and I assume that will be the case with Part 2.
Fashion notes? Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have FINALLY broken their green/pink wardrobe prison, thank god! Cynthia wore a very witchy custom Prada, with what looks like a latex sleeve harness. Interesting! Ariana wore vintage Gilbert Adrian. I?m not crazy about it, and yet I admire the craftsmanship, and it looks like a really beautiful and delicate gown. Ari?s being styled by Law Roach for this promotion, and probably for the awards season too, if she gets some nominations. I?ve seen comments on Ari?s makeup for some reason, she?s been doing this too-pale kabuki-type makeup in recent appearances, and I wonder if her MUA is experimenting with the high-def makeup and it?s all going horribly wrong. I also think she?s trying to get extreme ?doe eyes? and that?s what?s throwing everything off.
I?m also including photos of Jeff Goldblum, Sexiest Man Alive Jonathan Bailey (wearing decidedly unsexy trousers) and Michelle Yeoh, who wore Self-Portrait. I love Yeoh?s dress.

The promotion for Wicked For Good has begun in earnest. Thankfully, the publicity team seems to understand that they probably went way overboard last year, because it genuinely feels like Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have not been everywhere 24-7 for months now. The sequel comes out on November 21st. I?m assuming, then, we?re just getting a more traditional three-week promotional blitz. Fine with me. Ariana skipped the Brazilian premiere last week, but on Friday, she showed up for the Paris premiere. Ari is being styled by Law Roach these days, and Law found a vintage Lili?s Diamond dress from 1950 for Ariana.
Meanwhile, the NY Times recently profiled Ariana ahead of the Wicked sequel?s release, and she comes across really well here. I?m still amazed by all of this, btw. Ariana and Cynthia Erivo both seemed like such tricky customers, but there was something about these movies which allowed both of them to get a mulligan and completely remake their images. Even better, it genuinely seems like Cynthia and Ari care about each other and have a real friendship. Anyway, this Times piece says that Ari?s Glinda is more central to the sequel, and it?s more of her story than Elphaba?s. Some quotes from Ari:
Ari can?t wait for people to see this one: ?I have been quietly very eager this whole time for people to see the rest of her journey because she has a big arc in the first movie, and it?s just that much bigger in the second one,? Grande said.
She really had to become an actress: ?I don?t know that the projects I have acted in before required the range or the skill set that this one did. I was on children?s television and then swept away by pop music for a long time, then I landed this extraordinary role and I wanted to earn it.?
She studied the Stella Adler acting technique: ?This is my first time talking about it. I just wanted to design this person inside and out, even if none of it was necessary for a scene, so that I could reference it for myself and leave my own stuff at home. So every time something had to trigger Glinda, it was a Glinda trigger that I used, not an Ariana one.?
Wanting to step into her own power & charisma: ?I?m sort of working through that as well, the permission to step into your own magic. It?s so funny because in my work, I?ve always given myself that permission to kindly and lovingly ask for what I need. But when it comes to my real life, that is where I don?t know how. It?s been a work in progress for years.?
Going back to pop music and touring: ?There was something broken about my relationship to pop music that was healed recently through the time away,? she said. For Ariana, it felt like she had outgrown him, or she needed someone to manage every part of her image, life and career, which Scooter wasn?t really doing (or he was doing it badly). Ariana?s affair with Spongebob (Ethan Slater) highlighted that dysfunction at a moment when she needed serious crisis management, Scooter was in the wind. As for the rest of it? everyone says that Ariana wants another Oscar nomination, or maybe the Oscar itself. I don?t know. She impressed me in the first movie, but I wonder if she will get much awards buzz for the sequel.

Months ago, we learned that Kim Kardashian had completed her ?law studies? course. Not to be confused with actual law school Kim does not have a JD (Juris Doctor) degree, she has what amounts to a certificate of completion for her makeshift law studies. Still, that certificate was enough to get her a place to take the California Bar Exam, which she did about two months ago. She just got the results back in recent days. She did not pass. Which isn?t a huge surprise, considering Kim was literally just talking about how she used ChatGPT for ?legal advice? on her law exams.
Kim Kardashian says shes not a lawyer yet. Months after taking the California bar exam on July 29 and July 30, the SKIMS founder and reality star, 45, revealed her results on Saturday, Nov. 8.
In a candid Instagram Stories post, Kim shared that she failed to pass the exam ? but is still determined to achieve her goal.
WellIm not a lawyer yet, I just play a very well-dressed one on TV, she wrote. Six years into this law journey, and Im still all in until I pass the bar. No shortcuts, no giving up just more studying and even more determination.
Thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged me along the way so far. Failing short isnt failure its fuel. I was so close to passing the exam and that only motivated me even more. Lets go! she added.
Given just twice per year, the California bar exam consists of five one-hour essay questions, one 90-minute performance test and 200 multiple-choice questions.
According to the California State Bars website, approximately 16,000 people take the exam each year. The two-day test is rigorous, with a pass rate of 63.6% for those who took the exam in February.

For some reason, I always had the belief that the California Bar was ?easier? compared to some other states? bar exams. Isn?t New York?s Bar notoriously difficult? Let me look it up? while New York?s Bar exam is supposed to be really tough, California actually has the hardest exam, at least according to Google. So? Kim flunked a hard test after cheating and using AI on some of her law-studies tests. It is what it is. The only nice thing I?ll say is that it?s good that she?s not dissuaded she?ll probably keep retaking the Bar until she passes. Study harder next time, Kim!
