Here are some photos from recent days and events at the Cannes Film Festival. The big event on Monday was the splashy premiere of Wes Anderson?s The French Dispatch, one of many movies which was supposed to come out in 2020 but saw its release delayed because of the pandemic. I?m glad Anderson got to premiere his film his way at Cannes, with a star-studded red carpet. Maggie Gyllenhaal is on the Cannes jury, and she?s obviously been attending a lot of the premieres. For this one, she wore Chanel a big tulle skirt and a slouchy white blazer. This is awful!!! The skirt is fine, I guess. If it just exists as a skirt, maybe pair it with a black turtleneck or a sharp white button-down? But this slouchy-ass blazer is just a sloppy look. So bad.
Maggie wore Dior to the Kering Women in Motion event over the weekend. This look did not get enough play! It was very good.
Speaking of the Kering Women in Motion event, here?s Salma Hayek in Gucci. She looks like a game-show hostess, my God. This just looks so cheap on her!
Iris Law in Dior ethereal. So beautiful, she looks like both of her parents (Jude Law and Sadie Frost).
Have you seen all of those tweets from the youths watching Loki? They have no idea that Owen Wilson has had a career for 25 years. They?ve never heard of him before Loki. It?s funny. Also, Owen was in full-on Butterscotch Stallion mode in Cannes. Dude is looking GOOD.
Timothe Chalamet wore custom Tom Ford. Very cute. I know he?s not super-popular around here, but I love him.
Tilda Swinton in (what else) Haider Ackermann. She stood out in a sea of black suits.

Kaiser wrote about Greta Thunberg, climate activist, and her journey to the U.S. to participate in climate strikes. She gave a speech at the U.N. last Monday, and spoke at Montreals climate march on Friday. NBC reports that climate scientists say that Greta is having a tremendous impact on discussions and movements around climate change. Dr. Sally Benson, who is the co-director of the Precourt Institute for Energy at Stanford University, praised Greta for how she is motivating young people to be involved in the fight against climate change: Were seeing more grassroots action, and shes creating a movement where young people are pushing communities, cities, states and corporations and saying, were not going to wait.
Greta isnt the only teenager who is working to change the minds of adults on the importance of acting now to save the planet: Maggie Gyllenhaal told People while she was at the New York Film Festival that her oldest daughter, 13-year-old Ramona, was the reason that she joined became involved in climate activism:
My 13-year-old got us involved, the Oscar nominee said. She, like many, many children, isnt able to push out of her mind the dire situation that were in. Weve learned as grownups how to do that and they havent learned how to do that and theyre really concerned and upset demanding that the grownups pay attention. My daughter did that to me and it took me a minute.
Gyllenhaal attended the Youth Climate Strike in N.Y.C. earlier this month and said she cant not pay attention to whats going on.
Its real and we need to really change the way were living, she said. My 13-year-old who woke me up to that. Its happening all over the world, the children are mobilizing.

Maggie Gyllenhaal stars and serves as a producer on HBO?s The Deuce. The Deuce revolves around sex workers and the porn industry in the ?70s and ?80s. Maggie?s character, Candy, is a former sex worker who gets into adult films as both an actor and a director/producer. The show is critically acclaimed, and Maggie is recognized for her performance. The show itself has been recognized for giving women a voice in subject matter that is depicting misogyny in the highest order. James France also stars and serves as executive producer. Franco has been accused of many counts of assault that he has never properly addressed. But, as is often the case, Franco is not asked about he the allegations against him, but Maggie is. Something, she says, she finds annoying.
Does it annoy you when you get questions about James Franco? There?s this tendency where women are asked to answer for the men around them who have been accused of misconduct.
Yeah, that annoys me. I have been asked to answer for him and I have nothing to do with it. But I feel like it?s important to continue making the show. I feel like a political wife or something. I don?t like that.
I wondered if some of those questions were because you?re a producer, and you?ve been so vocal about having creative power within the show.
Yes, I was a part of that conversation. It was a lot of really intelligent people who were able to think in a nuanced way, who were talking with the actors and the crew. My conversation with an actress on the show is going to be very different than David Simon?s conversation with an actress on the show, but I do think we all tried to use the most nuanced part of our minds to think this through.
I feel, and I continue to feel, that this is a show about all of these things. To cancel a show about sexual politics, sexual power, the commodification of sex in the film business would be really confused. And nobody was willing to continue to make it without him.

Maggie?s approach to the Franco questions has always been to throw it back on the reporters for asking her instead of Franco himself. And I agree ? he?s the accused, not her. But I wish she would stay at that and not wander down this path of the show is more important than the fact that Franco is probably a predator. I, personally, did not watch the show because of Franco?s involvement. It was confirmed last fall that the third season of The Deuce would be its last. Although creator David Simon indicated the show was a three-season show, the weak ratings probably also played a part in the decision to end it, so perhaps I wasn?t the only one staying away from it because of Franco. The good news is Maggie wont have to answer for Franco anymore.

Maggie Gyllenhaal has a new-ish film on Netflix called The Kindergarten Teacher which is out in UK theaters today. It co-stars Gael Garcia Bernal, love him, and she plays a teacher who mentors a gifted young student, to the point of obsession. Heres the link to the trailer. It looks like a compelling thriller and has a decent RT rating.
Maggie did an interview with The Independent, she talked to Patrick HJ Smith, who is their head of culture. Patrick opened the piece with an assholish comment about Maggies voice and looks and how that undermines her message. It was sexist and his editor should have changed it. Maggie called him out on it. Instead of a proper apology, he explained his sh-tty reasoning because thats what you would expect from someone who would do that in the first place. Heres that passage and that exchange. Keep in mind this is the start of the article.
Talking to Maggie Gyllenhaal can be a little disorienting. She has a high-pitched, cartoonish voice, which she uses to express deep things. One critic memorably said that she possessed a ?Kewpie-doll silliness?, but maybe it?s a flaw in our culture that we expect serious thoughts to be couched in sonorous tones. ?We live in a masculine world,? she says, ?and in America ? especially very recently ? as much as we would like to believe otherwise, it?s a misogynistic world.?

I don?t watch The Deuce and I?m not really interested in its premise, which is about the early days of the p0rn industry in New York. Maggie Gyllenhaal has a big role as a hooker-turned-director, and James Franco plays two characters, twin mobsters. Maggie was out this week promoting the second season of the series, and she obviously got some questions about James Franco and how he?s been accused of abuse, harassment and assaulting several different women in many different situations. The claims and stories go back years, and just this week, Busy Phillips spoke again about how Franco is a ?bully? who violenting threw her to the ground and knocked the wind out of her (she says it?s all fine now, but still). The issue should not be ?let?s see what James Franco?s costar has to say,? but here we are. Maggie is basically having to answer for Franco?s behavior more than he?s ever had to answer for it.
?You know, we at the time that the accusations against James came out in the L.A. Times we read them all, we took them very seriously,? Maggie Gyllenhaal said Tuesday on the SiriusXM show Sway in the Morning. ?We spoke to every woman on the crew and in the cast to find out if they felt respected and what their experience of working with James was and everyone said that they had been totally respected by him. I feel like it would?ve been the wrong consequence to those accusations to shut our show down. It would?ve been like actually the opposite of the right thing to do? And yet, you know, look, I believe that there should be consequences for disrespecting or assaulting women. Of course, I do.?
Gyllenhaal also addressed the allegations against Franco in an interview with Vulture. ?I?m so not objective,? she said. ?I?m not the right person to talk about that except to say that neither of James?s characters on the show are heroes. I would say he?s walking right into the eye of the storm ? he?s continuing the conversation with the work that he?s doing?.I think about our show in particular: It?s about misogyny, it?s about inequality in terms of gender in the entertainment business. It?s about the subtleties of transactional sex. And I felt that it would have been a terrible shame to stop telling that story.?

Is Gyllenhaal?s answer the best? No, it?s not. I expected more from her, especially since she?s ordinarily such a fearless feminist and advocate for gender equality. What I?m feeling from her is that she doesn?t want to be the one to rock the boat on a steady job, plus she actually believes in the show and believes in what they?re doing. How many times are women put in the position of professional peacemakers and the ones who are expected to turn a blind eye to their male coworker?s issues? So while I think Maggie?s answers are not-great, I also think she?s doing more to talk in-depth about this than James Franco. Franco is using Maggie as a shield AND she?s the only one out there, promoting the show. It sucks. HE sucks.

I know a lot of you watch and love The Deuce and particularly rave about Maggie Gyllenhaal’s performance. I only saw about half of the first two-hour episode and then gave up because it seemed to meander. I probably need to give it a chance and get to know the characters first, because I know Corey loves it. Maggie was nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series ? Drama, which went to Elisabeth Moss for Handmaid’s Tale. She was in this Monse outfit which involved a sequin tube top with an asymmetric deconstructed hem over black dress pants. It’s weird and quirky and I actually like it, especially with those drop earrings. It doesn’t know whether it wants to be a dress or a suit but I don’t care.
Here’s Amy Poehler in Greta Constantine, in a dress which has a little built-in capelet and tie front. I swear she’s worn something very similar to this before. Her date was activist Saru Jayaraman, the co-founder and President of the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United. You can learn more about their work here. Amy did a bit with Seth Meyers in which she refused to get the setup to the punchline of a joke, as other celebrities had in the lead-up. She acted drunk and said “Said the peach in Call Me by Your Name, this scene is the pits.” I like how she riffed on being mansplained to by Seth. The writing was really funny last night.

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, a presenter at last night’s Golden Globe Awards, walked the red carpet in a black and gold gown by Marc Jacobs. The dress featured floral appliqus and a bloom over her shoulder. The 38-year-old actress, who took home a Golden Globe of her own last year for her role in The Honorable Woman, accessorized with gold drop earrings, gold bangles and a gold clutch. Her makeup was subtle, except for her fuchsia lipstick (NARS Audacious Lipstick in Michiyo). It’s not my favorite look for Maggie. The dress is okay, her hair looks great, but the lipstick is too Pink for the gown. Her look did come in handy, I suppose, if she didn’t feel like being sociable at the HBO after party, as she seemingly blended into the background.

Joanne Froggatt, nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Limited Series or TV Movie for her role as Anna Bates on Downton Abbey, looked positively radiant in her Reem Acra gown. She may not have won an award this year, but her look is absolutely a winner. The periwinkle blue shade perfectly complements her hair and skin tone and I love the plunging neckline. Her hair and makeup are on point and I think it was a smart move that she opted no to wear a necklace. The Chopard Pink diamond earrings she’s wearing, valued at $1 million, were a perfect accessory, along with her sleek silver clutch.
Malin Akerman also hit the red carpet in Reem Acra. The 37-year-old actress similarly went necklace-less in a strapless silver beaded gown with a sweetheart neckline and a peplum detail. Hair-wise, Malin opted to slick back her locks with a sleek bun and wore dark silver nail polish. She accessorized with subtle diamond earrings and rings and a teeny silver clutch. (What can she possibly fit in that?) Initially, I wasn’t overly fond of this look, as I’m not a peplum fan, but once I saw the side view, I was won over. She pulls off this look and she looks like she’s having fun.
E! hostess Giuliana Rancic gave us 2 looks last night. For her pre-show red carpet coverage, she donned a red lace gown by Mac Duggal, accompanied by shoes by Manolo Blahnik and Forevermark diamond earrings and bracelet. She posted a picture on her Instagram with the caption “Golden Globes look #1? and I couldn’t agree more. It is #1 in my book. I love this dress. How better to cover the red carpet than to wear red? The color looks great with her tan skin and blond hair and I am a big fan of the high neck and long sleeves. I am coveting that bracelet as well.

Maggie Gyllenhaal tried something different last night at the Emmys. As we all know, Maggie tends to go frumpy with her fashion, but she must have a new stylist. She wore this flouncy Oscar de la Renta ball gown, and I think she deserves credit for mixing things up. The dress combines a navy-blue bustier with a full, grape-colored skirt. This is an adventurous and fun selection for her! If we were measuring by awards show standards as a whole, Maggie wouldn’t fare in the top category. But compared to all her usual selections, this is an outstanding gown. The skirt is a little wrinkly, but that can’t be avoided after sitting in a car. This is a big win for Maggie.
Amanda Peet wore a textured, black ball gown by Michael Kors, although I’m not sure how I feel about the stomach cutout. Is it too much? Without it, the dress would be pretty boring, but a bared belly is unexpected at the Emmys. Eh, I like it, and the bun hairdo lends a sense of playfulness.
Anna Chlumsky wore an embellished Bibhu Mohapatra dress that was pretty perfect for the Emmys. It’s a little fussy, but she kept things from being too much by putting her hair up. She looks good, and I still can’t believe she’s the actress from My Girl.
Cat Deeley wore a metallic, bodycon Monique Lhuillier dress, which I actually loved. She looks stunning, and her loose hair is perfection with the dress. This is usually what Amber Heard tries to do, but Cat does it better.

Tina Fey wore a somber Antonio Berardi dress. She usually plays it safe, which is fine. This is Tina’s style and what makes her comfortable. It’s like the dress version of a tuxedo.

Here are some photos of Maggie Gyllenhaal at the Gracie Awards a few nights ago. I?m still not feeling that haircut, and I?m not really feeling the Maleficent dress either. To me, Maggie has a baby face. She?s 37 years old, but I think she could probably pass for 30. Like, if she was cast as a 30 year old, I would probably believe that. I would also believe it if she was cast as a woman in her 40s, just because in interviews, Maggie does come across as older and more mature. What?s my point? Maggie could play any character from the ages of 30 to 45, pretty much. But for some reason, some Hollywood executive or producer told her that she was ?too old? to play the spouse of a 55-year-old man. What the hell?
Maggie Gyllenhaal, an Oscar nominee getting Emmy buzz for her work on the Sundance miniseries ?The Honourable Woman,? reveals that she was recently turned down for a role in a movie because she was too old to play the love interest for a 55-year-old man. No kidding.
?There are things that are really disappointing about being an actress in Hollywood that surprise me all the time,? she said during an interview for an upcoming issue of TheWrap Magazine. ?I?m 37 and I was told recently I was too old to play the lover of a man who was 55. It was astonishing to me. It made me feel bad, and then it made feel angry, and then it made me laugh.?
Gyllenhaal declined to specify the project on which she was considered too old, but we?re wide open to suggestions. What?s casting out there with a 55-year-old leading man?
And despite the recent slam, Gyllenhaal said she was hopeful for women. ?A lot of actresses are doing incredible work right now, playing real women, complicated women,? said the actress, who won a Golden Globe in January for her role in ?The Honourable Woman? as an Anglo-Israeli businesswoman. ?I don?t feel despairing at all. And I?m more looking with hope for something fascinating.?

Sadly, I bet most actresses in their 30s have similar stories. When you have Jennifer Lawrence playing a character who is supposed to be a mid-30s housewife, then all the system is pretty screwed up. When a 37 year old is considered ?too old? to play against a 55-year-old man, then the system is pretty screwed up. Shall we burn it all down and start anew?

Maggie Gyllenhaal wore Thakoon to the SAGs last night where she was nominated for The Honourable Woman. This dress looked fantastic in motion, but in not so much in photos. She’s dropped her frumpy tendencies below the shoulders. Something’s still off. It’s the hair, right? Maggie’s sticking with the pixie cut. The dress is nice though, and the white looks very clean and crisp. Maggie’s jewelry was Fred Leighton, including Victorian gold pendant earrings and a 1940s-style peridot and diamond ring.
Matthew McConaughey worked his Civil War vibe in a blue Brioni suit. The style star of this couple was Camila Alves. I loved her Donna Karan Atelier gown. She knew how to work the asymmetrical offshoot into a side train. She looked gorgeous without pulling focus from Matthew, whose blue suit was shouty.
Caitriana Balfe wore another beautiful gown. This is Solace. The fluttery fabric reminds me of the flames of a fire. How poetic. The styling is on point down to the off-orange shoes.
Amanda Peet wore one of the worst dresses of the night. This J. Mendel whipped up a casual saloon look with a rack shelf to boot. She’s so pretty, but this dress is fug.
Paula Patton‘s style hasn’t improved much since splitting from Robin, but at least her Aiisha Ramadan dress didn’t include any mesh overlays. This look is very bridal with Gordman’s craft appliques.
