Johnny Depp visited Jimmy Kimmel yesterday, and you can tell he was itching to go full-on Scarfy again, but he restrained himself. One lonely, double-sided kerchief hung out of his pocket as he smoked his way into the studio. Remember, this is the new-old version of Depp. He’s receiving acclaim and accolades for his Black Mass transformation, so major league scarves are in the closet for now. Betcha they’ll be back as soon as this movie has been out for a few weeks. The film goes nationwide next Friday, so it won’t be long until Johnny can get back to his normal torn-hat getup. I haven’t made it to the movies since May, but this one is worth dropping everything to watch.
During the appearance, Kimmel mentions that Amber Heard did not take Johnny’s name, contrary to a report from a few months ago, which could have been one of those cases where Amber tests her friends by slipping them misinformation. Kimmel blows Depp’s mind here. He asks Johnny where the “Depp” name originated from, and Johnny doesn’t know. Then Kimmel tells a corny joke about why Amber didn’t take the Depp name, and Johnny says he might take Amber’s name. It could be an offhanded remark (like when he joked about eating his dogs to fix Terriergate), but who knows.
In this clip, Johnny talks about how he hates watching his own movies, but the Black Mass filmmakers insisted he sit through the Cannes premiere. He fell asleep about 15 times. Eh. I’d make fun of him, but I almost fell asleep during Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Obvious tabloid story is obvious. As soon as the Summer of Splits claimed Blranda and Gwavin, you knew this was going to happen. Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton found themselves suddenly divorced and hard at work on The Voice. So with their newly single statuses, do you think they?re hooking up? Hm. I think Blake likes blondes, but I think he likes ?em sort of young. As for Gwen? I just can?t see how Blake would be her type at all. I might need to tell my mom about this (she loves Blake) and see what she thinks about this potential hookup:
Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani became single at around the same time after divorcing their spouses. Now the word on the set of The Voice is that the 39-year-old country singer and the 45-year-old rock goddess have set their caps for each other and taken their friendship into romance territory. Blake and Gwen are said to be in the early stages of a blossoming romance and, despite their attempts to keep it ‘on the down-low,’ their flirtatious behavior at work has people ‘buzzing,’ according to Life & Style.
An insider told Life & Style: ‘They’re trying to keep it on the down-low, but it’s not happening partly because they’re all over each other. The chemistry between them is off the charts. Everyone on set sees that Blake and Gwen are falling for one another.’
They both just ended their respective marriages, and ‘the pain they’ve endured’ from rumours of their spouses cheating has provided Blake and Gwen something to commiserate over.
A source told Life & Style: ‘Now that they’re both single, everything has changed. The whole set is buzzing.’
As it turns out, Blake was the one who initiated the romance with Gwen, whom he admires for her talent and business sense and for her warm, maternal ways towards sons Kingston, nine, Zuma, seven, and Apollo, 18 months. Blake, who doesn’t have any children with Lambert, has always yearned to be a dad.
‘Gwen is a doting mom who comes with children,’ a friend told the publication, adding: ‘That is enticing to him.’

If Blake Shelton ? who is beloved by many moms ? decided to date a woman close to his age, a woman who is already a mom to three young children, I wonder if that would make him even more popular with women? I know I would like him more, so maybe that?s the answer. Still, I just don?t see it. I?ll buy that Blake and Gwen have a flirty, sweet relationship but nothing more. And I bet Adam Levine is super-jealous.

Natalie Portman has been in Toronto for the past few days for the opening of TIFF. On Wednesday night, she sat down for a conversation about her life and career, and then on Thursday night, she premiered her passion project, A Tale of Love and Darkness. For the conversation on Wednesday, Portman wore the sparkly Dior dress with sleeves. For the premiere, she wore a pale blushy beige Lanvin gown with a big star-brooch on one side.
I?m not incredibly fond of either look, to be honest. A lot of people criticized Natalie?s Cannes Film Festival fashions, but it seemed like she was having more fun then. Natalie has the coloring to really pull off some beautiful, rich colors, so I don?t know why she chose the Lanvin gown in particular ? it really washes her out. The Dior look, while twee as hell, at least flatters her coloring and it?s an interesting design.
You can read some highlights from Portman?s TIFF conversation here. She talked about working on Garden State and how she realizes now that she was playing the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope. That part was interesting:
She?s also had some hindsight about becoming part of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl phenomenon. At the time she signed on for Garden State, she said, all she was thinking about was how the character of Sam, an adorable pathological liar with epilepsy, was unlike anything she?d ever been offered.
?When I read it I was like, ?Oh, this is a character that?s wacky and interesting, and no one?s ever given me a chance to play something like this. It?s this sort of unusual girl,?? Portman said. ?So that was my incentive to make it. But of course I see that trope and I think it?s a good thing to recognize the way those female characters are used. I mean, I appreciate that people are writing characters that are interesting and unusual, rather than some bland female character as the girlfriend in a movie, but when the point of the character in this movie is to, like, help the guy have his arc, that?s sort of the problem, and that?s why it?s good that they?re talking about it, because it certainly is a troubling trope.?

I actually don?t think of Natalie when I think of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. I think about actresses like Zooey Deschanel. I also think the Cool Girl has overtaken the MPDG, and when I think of Cool Girls, I think of Emily Ratajkowski, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson and the like. Portman is right ? the MPDG is a troubling trope, as is the Cool Girl.

Jennifer Lawrence is starting to do the rounds for both Mockingjay 2 and Joy, so we should get some interesting interviews in the coming weeks and months. I hope we get some new photos too because she’s staying outta sight lately, and the same photos are getting lots of play, but I do covet this blue dress from Comic-Con. Not that I’d have anywhere to wear it besides to hang in front of the laptop working, but a girl can dream.
This interview is interesting because JLaw seems acutely aware that anything she says can and will may be held against her in a court of the gossip-reading public. She doesn’t speak about one of her favorite subjects, food, and she doesn’t say anything super sarcastic. She admits to feeling put down by people’s reactions to her candid goofiness and fart-loving ways. Oh, and she says she definitely isn’t too young to hit her 40s in Joy. I love JLaw, but she’s going too far with that one:
The pressures of stardom: “I picture myself drowning. Outwardly, I look like I’m having a blast, and I am, at least on some levels. There I was – burp, burp, burp – just a little gal from Kentucky getting discovered by big ol’ Hollywood. But inside I’m terrified. In an instant – boom – everyone’s listening, everyone’s looking.”
She’s different from fame: “You want to know how I’ve changed? I’m so scared to say anything now. I can see every negative way that people can take it, and I don?t want to sound like I’m complaining. ‘Oh, she’s so conceited now. Oh, she’s so jaded now.’ It probably comes from Googling myself. If it were up to me, I would not talk. I would just act … You try being 22, having a period and staying away from Google. I once Googled ‘Jennifer Lawrence Ugly.’ [Laughs] Do I sound bitchy? I can’t think of a more wasteful use of my time than to worry about this. Why do I care what people think? But I do. I just can’t pretend I don’t care. I get really insecure about it. The world makes an opinion of you without ever meeting you. That worry should not bother me, but it does. It bothers me.”
How she copes: “I find a certain peace by thinking of me in public as sort of an avatar self. You out there can have the avatar me. I can keep me. And I just try to acknowledge that this scrutiny is stressful, and that anyone would find it stressful. So I’ve got to try to let it go, and try to be myself, and focus on important things, like picking up dog poop.”
On being a mother of two in Joy: “David gets visions. He’s in his own beautiful, amazing world. Those kinds of silly questions don?t really matter to him. It?s not like I was old enough for American Hustle. And I was way too young for Silver Linings” That’s why I almost didn’t get it.”

Well, all I have to say about Jennifer playing older roles is that I hope she enjoys it while it lasts. Because there’s always a younger actress waiting in the wings for her turn as the ingenue. Jennifer has a lot of talent, and perhaps one day, she’ll be one of the fortunate ones to stick around long after age 40. She has what it takes, for sure. Competition is always fierce though, and she peaked so early in her career that constant financial and critical acclaim may be hard to maintain forever.
JLaw would do well to stop googling herself, especially about the “ugly” thing. Why would you want to do that to yourself? She’s so wacky.

This story is already a day old, but I wanted to talk about Jaimie Alexander’s new show too. Here she is with her stunt double, and those are always the coolest photos. Jaimie will take her first leading lady turn on Blindspot, which sounds like a Memento knockoff. Her character wakes up naked and has to find clues in her full-body tattoos, so it’s going to be a hot mess. NBC is counting on showing as much skin as possible without getting in trouble with the censors, and the tattoo gimmick will run thin very fast. Can’t see them maintaining decent storytelling past a season or two, but maybe Marvel fans will show up for Lady Sif with sex-ay tattoos. I can’t even imagine how much time it takes to apply all that fake body art before every day of shooting, and Jaimie’s stunt double has to go through it too.
Jaimie sat down with People to promote the show, and she dropped a little story about how she once kicked some pervy producer butt:

It?s taken me this long to figure out what I was going to say about Beyonce?s Flaunt cover shoot. That?s because? I really didn?t (and don?t) have much to say about it. Beyonce hasn?t done a sit-down interview with any media outlet in more than a year. She?s answered a few questions via email, she posted photos on social media, she?s posed for a lot of photoshoots, but Beyonce is not about ?words? nowadays. Many believe this is a great strategy for Beyonce, because in the past, her interviews were never that great to begin with. Anyway, she covers the new issue of Flaunt and there?s no cover interview to go along with it. Bey did deign to do a ?word association? thing with Flaunt ? go here to see Flaunt?s cover package. Some of the photos are NSFW-ish. And I now believe that she really did get modest bolt-ons.
Meanwhile, Beyonce is also on the cover of this week?s In Touch Weekly. DIVORCE! Except probably not. Beyonce and Jay-Z seemed to weather that storm last year and while they don?t seem ?stronger than ever,? they seem solid enough. Would Beyonce ever divorce him? I think she might at some point. But probably not now. Anyway, here are some highlights from In Touch?s story:
Beyonce is tired: She?s tired of Jay?s other women, tired of the charade and tired of performing ?Drunk in Love? with him. Seriously, they didn?t perform together during the Made In America concert this weekend.
Love is dead: An insider says, ?It?s dead. Bey is sick of keeping up the ruse of happiness, and she?s done.?
Bey?s silence speaks volumes: ?It?s like she?s on lockdown and doesn?t want to be asked about her marriage or why she and Jay haven?t had another child after Blue Ivy. But in private, she?s already told friends and family that she?s moving forward with her life. She?ll soon make a public announcement that their marriage is over.?
Rumors of Jay?s infidelities: He might have cheated with Rihanna, Rachel Roy and Rita Ora. Then, ?Earlier this summer, Bey found some suspicious texts on Jay?s phone that led her to believe he was having a secret flirtatious communication with one of his [female] proteges? Beyonce?s been on high alert for some time and took her new suspicions to one of Jay Z?s right hand men, who told her she needed to take that up with her husband. To Bey, that was a confirmation of her worst suspicions and fears.?
Jay wanted to go to the VMAs: When he asked Beyonce to go with him this year as a ?show of public solidarity,? she turned him down: ?She couldn?t figure out why Jay would want to go when they?re at a point where they can barely stand to look at each other. She made a comment about Jay only wanting to go to see Rita Ora and he laughed and twirled his finger in circles around his head, making a sign like Bey was crazy. [She] demanded to see his phone, but he wouldn?t let her. He started screaming back at her, and this went on for 20 minutes until Beyonce pulled herself together and warned Jay that he was messing with the wrong woman. Then she picked up her bag and walked out.?
Figuring out her next move: ?She is fully in charge of how the divorce announcement is going to be made? She is going to play the victim card to the hilt.?

There are some other details, about how Beyonce is going to ask for full custody of Blue Ivy, and how Jay has some legal issues pending, one of which might have Jay opening up his financial records. Apparently, he?s been hiding assets from Beyonce for a while. THAT detail is very interesting to me, because I actually believe it. Anyway, Gossip Cop ?was told? that a ?divorce announcement is NOT imminent.? Who do you believe?
