Here are photos from last night?s huge London premiere for Wicked: For Good. They were in Paris over the weekend for a premiere and photocall, but those photos didn?t make a huge impact. This London premiere feels like the REAL start of the promotional cycle, honestly. Anyway, while I?m not going to see this in theaters, I wish them well and I?ll check it out as a rental, like I did with the first film. I enjoyed the first one much more than I expected to, and I assume that will be the case with Part 2.
Fashion notes? Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have FINALLY broken their green/pink wardrobe prison, thank god! Cynthia wore a very witchy custom Prada, with what looks like a latex sleeve harness. Interesting! Ariana wore vintage Gilbert Adrian. I?m not crazy about it, and yet I admire the craftsmanship, and it looks like a really beautiful and delicate gown. Ari?s being styled by Law Roach for this promotion, and probably for the awards season too, if she gets some nominations. I?ve seen comments on Ari?s makeup for some reason, she?s been doing this too-pale kabuki-type makeup in recent appearances, and I wonder if her MUA is experimenting with the high-def makeup and it?s all going horribly wrong. I also think she?s trying to get extreme ?doe eyes? and that?s what?s throwing everything off.
I?m also including photos of Jeff Goldblum, Sexiest Man Alive Jonathan Bailey (wearing decidedly unsexy trousers) and Michelle Yeoh, who wore Self-Portrait. I love Yeoh?s dress.

The promotion for Wicked For Good has begun in earnest. Thankfully, the publicity team seems to understand that they probably went way overboard last year, because it genuinely feels like Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have not been everywhere 24-7 for months now. The sequel comes out on November 21st. I?m assuming, then, we?re just getting a more traditional three-week promotional blitz. Fine with me. Ariana skipped the Brazilian premiere last week, but on Friday, she showed up for the Paris premiere. Ari is being styled by Law Roach these days, and Law found a vintage Lili?s Diamond dress from 1950 for Ariana.
Meanwhile, the NY Times recently profiled Ariana ahead of the Wicked sequel?s release, and she comes across really well here. I?m still amazed by all of this, btw. Ariana and Cynthia Erivo both seemed like such tricky customers, but there was something about these movies which allowed both of them to get a mulligan and completely remake their images. Even better, it genuinely seems like Cynthia and Ari care about each other and have a real friendship. Anyway, this Times piece says that Ari?s Glinda is more central to the sequel, and it?s more of her story than Elphaba?s. Some quotes from Ari:
Ari can?t wait for people to see this one: ?I have been quietly very eager this whole time for people to see the rest of her journey because she has a big arc in the first movie, and it?s just that much bigger in the second one,? Grande said.
She really had to become an actress: ?I don?t know that the projects I have acted in before required the range or the skill set that this one did. I was on children?s television and then swept away by pop music for a long time, then I landed this extraordinary role and I wanted to earn it.?
She studied the Stella Adler acting technique: ?This is my first time talking about it. I just wanted to design this person inside and out, even if none of it was necessary for a scene, so that I could reference it for myself and leave my own stuff at home. So every time something had to trigger Glinda, it was a Glinda trigger that I used, not an Ariana one.?
Wanting to step into her own power & charisma: ?I?m sort of working through that as well, the permission to step into your own magic. It?s so funny because in my work, I?ve always given myself that permission to kindly and lovingly ask for what I need. But when it comes to my real life, that is where I don?t know how. It?s been a work in progress for years.?
Going back to pop music and touring: ?There was something broken about my relationship to pop music that was healed recently through the time away,? she said. When I asked what exactly it was about her pop career that needed mending, Grande laughed softly: ?How much more time do we have?? Then she paused for a long time, her composure slipping. ?I think it got away from me in a way I didn?t expect,? Grande said, tearing up. ?There?s a thing that comes along with your dreams coming true that feels dangerous at times. Nothing prepares you for what comes with it. Until quite recently, it was really hard for me to navigate and I think it stripped a lot of joy out of this for me.?
Firing Scooter Braun: ?And by the way, I have a different team now,? she said, alluding to her split from longtime manager Scooter Braun. ?Said with love, but that was a piece.?

She left Scooter Braun when all of his other clients left too, like Justin Bieber. For Ariana, it felt like she had outgrown him, or she needed someone to manage every part of her image, life and career, which Scooter wasn?t really doing (or he was doing it badly). Ariana?s affair with Spongebob (Ethan Slater) highlighted that dysfunction at a moment when she needed serious crisis management, Scooter was in the wind. As for the rest of it? everyone says that Ariana wants another Oscar nomination, or maybe the Oscar itself. I don?t know. She impressed me in the first movie, but I wonder if she will get much awards buzz for the sequel.

Then we learned that Ethan was married and he and his wife just had a baby not even a year before he met Ariana. Two marriages destroyed, all because of an on-set love affair. Well, Ariana and Ethan have given it a go ever since. They?ve been together, they?ve tried to have a real relationship. And obviously, Ariana is starting to get bored. ?He loves her, but he?s drowning in the circus of her life,? one insider explains. He?s used to a controlled Broadway stage, not sold-out arenas screaming for every move. Even when he?s home, he?s mentally halfway through the tour or rehearsals. It?s exhausting just watching him try to keep up.?
Just days before Ariana?s big VMA night in September, Ethan was spotted quietly in Jersey City with Lilly and their little boy, co-parenting duties in full swing. Meanwhile, Ariana was surrounded by brother Frankie, stylist Law Roach, Lady Gaga and basically her own mini army. Ethan? Nowhere in sight.
Their last public appearance together was, incredibly, in late April at a preview of Little Shop of Horrors, supporting Ariana?s Victorious co-star Liz Gillies ? and before that, the Oscars in March, where they were photographed hugging and chatting all night. Sources tell The Spotlight that the intensity of Ariana?s schedule ? combined with the shadow of her high-profile exes and past fleeting romances ? has created tension.

That last part is critical there probably won?t be a big split announcement until after all of the Wicked promo. That being said, it?s not like Ari and Ethan really put their relationship front-and-center in the promotion last year. They even kept their distance on red carpets, and they were only photographed together behind-the-scenes at some awards shows. Anyway, this sh-t is as much of a cliche as Keith Urban. Ariana Grande might be a controversy-prone marriage-wrecker, but one good thing about her is that she absolutely loathes Donald Trump and his cult followers. She?s always supported Democrats and she?s always voted for Democrats. Well, on Sunday, Ariana posted a message to her IG Stories (which I?ve included at the end of the post) where she reposted a series of questions to Maga cultists: are you getting everything you were promised, has your life gotten better under Trump? It was the kind of semi-viral post which tons of Democrats will repost and retweet. So it was weird that Ariana?s IG Story repost garnered a reaction from the White House Deputy Press Secretary. These people have nothing better to do than stalk Ariana?s Instagram and issue thin-skinned statements?
Ariana Grande received a direct statement from the White House after the pop singer called out supporters of the Trump administration. On Sunday night, Grande reshared a post to her Instagram that criticized the Trump administration for its ongoing ICE raids and transphobic rhetoric, as well as other threats to democracy.
The post was written by activist Matt Bernstein as a ?check-in? for Trump supporters. The paragraph concludes with the following question: ?It?s been 250 days. Now that immigrants have been violently torn from their families and communities have been destroyed, now that trans people have been blamed for virtually everything and live in fear, now that free speech is on the brink of collapse for us all ? has your life gotten better??
In a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly, White House Deputy Press Secretary Kush Desai responded to Grande directly. The statement utilized Grande?s song titles ? including ?Save Your Tears,? ?Just Like Magic? and ?Get Well Soon.?
?Save your tears, Ariana. Because President Trump?s actions ended Joe Biden?s inflation crisis and are bringing in trillions in new investment,? Desai said.
?He even signed an executive order just like magic that paved the way for the FTC to crack down on Ticketmaster for ripping off Ariana Grande?s concert-going fans. Get well soon, Ariana!?
Desai makes reference to the Federal Trade Commission?s recent lawsuit aimed at Live Nation and Ticketmaster that claims the entities misled consumers about resale ticket prices. This suit comes a month after it sued a ticket resale company Key Investment Group and affiliated companies including Epic Seats and Totally Tix LLC, alleging that it used illegal methods to secure tickets and resell them at inflated rates for popular concerts, including Taylor Swift?s ?Eras? tour.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo surprisingly opened up the Oscars, singing a medley of ?Somewhere Over the Rainbow,? ?Home? and ?Defying Gravity.? They both sang their asses off, but I did feel like it was a quick admission that Wicked was not going to win many Oscars the film ended up winning for Costume Design and Production Design and nothing else. The one good thing that has come out of the years-long Wicked promotion is that Ariana and Cynthia are absolutely besties. You can?t fake that closeness for this long they love each other dearly, and the shot of Ariana watching Cynthia sing is iconic.
Fashion-wise? well? much to say. Ari and Cynthia?s red carpet looks were not my taste. Ari wore Schiaparelli, a structural lampshade in a pale cream/pink, basically. Cynthia wore Louis Vuitton, a custom look in a rich, dark green velvet. I much preferred their performance ensembles Cynthia wore a gorgeous Vivienne Westwood gown, and Ari wore a custom Schiaparelli in ruby-red, with a ?ruby slipper? worked into the design at the back. As if Ariana?s whole dress was the ruby slipper. This was the first time Ariana has worn red or burgundy for anything involving Wicked, correct? Her awards season has been dominated by pinks and creams. The Westwood look was also a rare lighter ensemble for Cynthia.

Ariana Grande has not won anything for Wicked, but she has been nominated across the board. I sort of wanted to see her win one thing, because I?m sure her speech would have been funny and tearful. But instead, she?s had to watch Zoe Saldana pick up all of the supporting-actress awards for Emilia Perez. At last night?s SAGs, Ari wore a custom Loewe. I honestly can?t get a handle on Loewe and what a ?typical Loewe look? really is, because this just looks like Elie Saab to me. Ari was poorly advised to go through the awards season with this washed-out blonde shade too.
Ari?s on-screen partner Cynthia Erivo wore a spectacular vintage Givenchy to the show. I loved this, I loved how over-the-top it was.
Elle Fanning also wore Loewe, and once again, I?m asking? what is it with Loewe? She paired her look with a Cartier necklace.

Ariana Grande is in full Oscars campaign mode. Given her wild wicker basket dress at the Critics Choice Awards this weekend, it looks like she?s having just as much fun as she did during that bonkers Wicked press tour. Ari was on a recent episode of Marc Maron?s WTF podcast. During her appearance, she talked about mental health. Speaking from experience, Ari said that because dealing with fame from a young age can be extremely difficult, studios and record labels should be providing their talent with therapy sessions.
Ariana Grande is advocating for therapy for young stars in both the acting and music worlds, saying that weekly appointments should be built into their contracts.
The Oscar-nominated actor and Grammy-winning pop star ? who got her start on Broadway and the Nickelodeon show ?Victorious? ? opened up to Marc Maron on his ?WTF? podcast about having to deal with fame at such a young age, particularly with the media scrutinizing her personal life and body.
?I was 19 when all of that nonsense started happening to me, and it?s just a crazy piece of the puzzle,? she said. ?It?s something you work so hard to try and understand, and it will never make sense to me. I just love art and that?s all I care about, so it?s just weird that that?s a part of it ? It started when I was so young with my body or rumors about my relationships or about my team or about my mom or about people I love. There was just no limit.?
Grande said the situation was ?impossible to navigate,? and that?s why she chooses to speak up about the topic whenever she gets the chance. She?s particularly passionate about therapy, and told Maron she thinks it should be built into the contract of every young star.
?It?s so important that these record labels, these studios, these TV studios, these big production companies make it a part of the contract when you sign on to do something that?s going to change your life in that way, on that scale,? Grande said. ?You need a therapist to be seeing several times a week.?
She continued that because the big studios and labels ?know how your life is going to change? and have seen how fame can ?impact people in a negative way,? they ?should be responsible for protecting you from that.?
?When these people are cast in these life-changing roles, or when they get that record deal, when they get that moment, that should be non-negotiable in the contract,? Grande said. ?Because to be an artist, you are a vulnerable person with your heart on your sleeve ? So the same person who is meant to do art is the exact same person who is not meant to deal with that shit.?
Grande added about her own therapist: ?I love her so much. We do great work!?
The star has spoken up about these issues before, telling Penn Badgley?s ?Podcrushed? podcast in June that she was ?reprocessing? her time on ?Victorious.? Though neither Badgley nor Grande specifically mentioned it, the episode aired just a few months after the release of Investigation Discovery?s ?Quiet on Set,? which included misconduct allegations against ?Victorious? creator Dan Schneider. He has denied the allegations and is pursuing a defamation suit over the documentary.
?A lot of people don?t have the support that they need to get through being a performer at that level at such a young age,? Grande told ?Podcrushed.? ?The environment just needs to be made a lot safer all around and like I said, I?m still in real time reprocessing my relationship to it.?

Preach, Ari. I think this is a great idea. Several former child stars have strongly advocated for mental health support and increased protections for stars, including Alyson Stoner (Cheaper by the Dozen and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody) and Ariana?s former Sam & Cat costar, Jenette McCurdy. Labels and studios *should* provide easily accessible mental health support for their talent. Executives and publicists do know how much life is going to change for the actors and artists that hit it big. It?s also difficult for the talent that has a flop or receives a lot of negative reviews. And, of course, there?s the overall trauma of dealing with sketchy, sh-tty people in the biz. I think ?impossible to navigate? is a good way to describe it. Hopefully, this topic will reignite now with even more eyes and ears hearing it and lead to some form of meaningful change.

Before I saw Wicked, I was fully prepared to say ?this is not for me.? But then I watched it and? yeah, I enjoyed it. Was it the best thing ever? Eh, that?s an impossible standard, but it was fine-to-good. What really surprised me was how much I enjoyed both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Both women really worked their asses off and you could see it on screen. Well, now both women are Oscar-nominated for their performances, Cynthia as the lead actress category and Ariana in supporting. To celebrate her first Oscar nomination, Ari posted this on her social media:

Real talk: if Ariana was a less messy person or she had a less scandalous romantic life, I actually think she would be a major contender. I?m not even joking, she was really good in Wicked and she absolutely deserves this nomination. I?m just saying, she probably could have won if she and Ethan Slater didn?t have an affair and wreck both of their marriages (ON THIS FILM!). Alas, my guess/hope is that Lilly Jay?s well-timed essay last month was the final word on Ariana?s Oscar chances. As it should be.

During the Wicked promotional tour, I often remarked on how nice it was that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo had zero drama with each other. Ari and Cynthia have now worked together and promoted Wicked together for two full years, and they?ve still got to promote the second film. They both have reputations for having somewhat tricky personalities no judgment and I?m still flabbergasted that they?ve managed to maintain a seemingly genuine friendship and allyship throughout everything. Obviously, ?two women get along really well despite everyone expecting them to beef? doesn?t sell. So that?s why a lot of people are focusing on ?wait, are Ariana and Cynthia TOO close?? Cynthia Erivo is with Lena Waithe, and Waithe has been posting a lot of interesting stuff on her social media. I?m not going to get too into this, but I do think it?s funny because? none of these people are known for their fidelity. Cynthia & Lena?s relationship probably started when Cynthia broke up Lena?s marriage. And we all know what Ari is like.
Anyway, here are some photos of Ari, Cynthia and the Wicked people at last night?s Golden Globes. I brought up the Lena Waithe stuff because she did not attend the Globes with Cynthia, and Lena was posting a lot about Cynthia and Ariana on her socials last night. Ariana wore a vintage 1966 Givenchy which was supposed to give ?Audrey Hepburn vibes.? Please don?t let Ariana anywhere near an Audrey Hepburn biopic. The dress itself was meh to me there are so many better vintage looks but I really love that Ariana wore vintage to the Globes. Cynthia wore Louis Vuitton she?s developed a strong relationship with LV, they?ve been making a lot of custom looks for her.
Wicked didn?t even win Best Musical or Comedy it lost to Emilia Perez. I find that? odd.

Here are some photos from last night?s New York premiere of Wicked. This was much more muted than I expected, especially considering the wild popularity of Wicked?s Broadway run. It?s almost like the studio has suddenly dialed back the premieres and promotion because they?re worried about it now? Something else I was thinking about recently is that both Ariana and Cynthia have reputations for being a bit prickly, so it?s sort of amazing that they?ve kept this show on the road and still manage to be so friendly. Even more than friendly I really buy that they?ve become close friends. There are zero rumors (that I?ve seen) of any beefs or fights or ?please don?t make me pose next to her again.?
Fashion notes: Ariana?s pink/fuschia dress is Louis Vuitton, and Cynthia?s ensemble is Dior. I actually love Cynthia?s look. That?s one of the best ensembles she?s worn for the whole promotion. Ari?s LV is so meh. You know they planned out everything and the stylists were coordinating and all of that, so why are Ariana?s custom pieces so overwhelmingly blah? Also: Cynthia changed into a different all-black ensemble and it?s a really great look too (and I think it?s Dior as well).
Some clips and Wicked vocals have already started to come out online, to mixed reviews. I?ll say this? Ariana has the vocal range to pull this off.
