Taylor Swift?s The Life of a Showgirl is out now. The good news is that Taylor is a stand-alone industry and a monoculture, which means that everyone has an opinion on her life and her music. On Thursday, leaks of TLOAS were being widely circulated online, and the Swifties were already in the trenches and fighting with everyone. The thing is, 90% of the music industry is in awe of Taylor and fearful of her enormous power. Which probably explains why even though early listeners of TLOAS are disappointed, the mainstream media?s reviews of the album are glowing and extremely positive. Variety and Rolling Stone led the way in praising the album and calling it yet another perfect classic. The Guardian?s critic was more honest, and this is the review getting much more play, some highlights:
There are albums for which vast success seems preordained, and then there is The Life of a Showgirl. The podcast on which Taylor Swift announced the release of her 12th studio album ? her fiance Travis Kelce?s ordinarily sports-focused New Heights ? garnered half a billion views, breaking a record set by Donald Trump?s appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience in the process. A ?launch event? film, featuring the kind of lyric videos and backstage footage that anyone else would release on YouTube, is instead set for a theatrical release in more than 100 countries: in the US alone, it sold $15m worth of tickets in 24 hours. The album itself has been pre-saved more than 5m times on Spotify, breaking another record in the process. ?I?m immortal now,? Swift sings on the title track, which seems less like an extravagant boast than a statement of fact.
In contrast to last year?s The Tortured Poets Department ? which by the time she?d finished releasing expanded editions and bonus tracks, was nearly two and half hours long ? it offers a crisp 12 songs in 40 minutes. Her recent collaborators Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner are nowhere to be seen. Swift made The Life of a Showgirl in between Eras dates with Max Martin and Shellback, the Swedish duo who co-wrote and produced her most forthright pop bangers of the 2010s: Shake It Off, Blank Space, Don?t Blame Me, Bad Blood.
But anyone anticipating something similar from Showgirl is in for a shock: the fizzing electronic pop of Reputation and 1989 is conspicuously absent. Instead, its primary currency is breezy, easy-on-the-ear soft rock: acoustic guitars, misty synth tones, subtle orchestrations and breathy backing vocals. Wood?s laid-back take on disco recalls not the sweaty hedonism of the dancefloor but the late 70s moment where four-to-floor rhythms and chicken-scratch guitar temporarily invaded the oeuvres of west coast singer-songwriters.
More startling still is the distinct lack of undeniable hooks and nailed-on melodies. The songs are well turned, but in terms of genuinely memorable moments, Showgirl evinces just one killer chorus (Elizabeth Taylor), some impressively unexpected key changes on Wi$h Li$t and the authentically heart-tugging Ruin the Friendship, which finds Swift returning to her home town for the funeral of a high school boy she regrets not dating. There?s a fantastic chord sequence on Actually Romantic, but, alas, 37 years ago Frank Black wrote a very similar one for Where Is My Mind? by Pixies, a song you can literally sing along to Actually Romantic. The rest floats in one ear and out the other: not unpleasantly, but you might reasonably expect more given the amassed songwriting firepower behind it, and Swift?s claims of ?keeping the bar really high?.
Cancelled! deals with the Kim-and-Kanye-adjacent controversies that beset Swift in 2015 and 2016, and Father Figure concerns former label boss Scott Borchetta, both in needless-to-say-I-had-the-last-laugh style. There are some spiky lines here and there ? ?you made a deal with this devil / turns out my dick?s bigger? snaps Father Figure ? but they don?t really click. Perhaps that?s because Cancelled! and Father Figure revisit very well-trodden ground, while eviscerating a rival when you?re the world?s most successful pop star is, by default, punching down, even if she did apparently call you ?boring Barbie? behind your back.
Then there?s Wood, a song that, metaphorically speaking, drunkenly clambers on a table in Wetherspoons pub with a skew-whiff bridal veil on its head and an L-plate around its neck and favours everyone in earshot with a loud paean to the size of her fiance?s penis, which it variously describes as his ?magic wand?, his ?redwood tree? and his ?hard rock? (there is also a regrettable degree of punning on the word ?cocky?). Of course, Swift is perfectly entitled to write about whatever she wants, TMI or not, but there?s no escaping the fact that comparing her partner?s knob to a magic wand constitutes weak writing from someone who made her name, at least in part, by being a sharper, wittier, more incisive lyricist than her peers.
In fairness, Wood is one clanging misstep on an album that isn?t terrible: it?s just nowhere near as good as it should be given Swift?s talents, and it leaves you wondering why. Perhaps romantic contentment simply writes whiter than vengeful post-breakup bitterness, or perhaps it wobbles your judgment. Perhaps it was rushed. Or perhaps its author was just exhausted, which would be entirely understandable. Even the immortal, it seems, sometimes need to take a break from pop?s constant churn and unceasing clamour for content.

The fact that it?s not full of more revved-up songs is what surprised me, given the name of the album and Taylor?s return to working with Max Martin and Shellback. I was expecting upbeat pop bangers, and not? this. I also don?t understand Taylor?s need to churn out albums every year, especially when it certainly feels like she?s running out of good material. That?s the larger point though Taylor?s in such rarefied air, she believes/knows that her fans will buy every single song, every album, every variant she sells, regardless of quality. Every artist makes dumb songs very few artists release all of their dumb songs because they feel the need to churn out an annual album. Ariana Grande might be a controversy-prone marriage-wrecker, but one good thing about her is that she absolutely loathes Donald Trump and his cult followers. She?s always supported Democrats and she?s always voted for Democrats. Well, on Sunday, Ariana posted a message to her IG Stories (which I?ve included at the end of the post) where she reposted a series of questions to Maga cultists: are you getting everything you were promised, has your life gotten better under Trump? It was the kind of semi-viral post which tons of Democrats will repost and retweet. So it was weird that Ariana?s IG Story repost garnered a reaction from the White House Deputy Press Secretary. These people have nothing better to do than stalk Ariana?s Instagram and issue thin-skinned statements?
Ariana Grande received a direct statement from the White House after the pop singer called out supporters of the Trump administration. On Sunday night, Grande reshared a post to her Instagram that criticized the Trump administration for its ongoing ICE raids and transphobic rhetoric, as well as other threats to democracy.
The post was written by activist Matt Bernstein as a ?check-in? for Trump supporters. The paragraph concludes with the following question: ?It?s been 250 days. Now that immigrants have been violently torn from their families and communities have been destroyed, now that trans people have been blamed for virtually everything and live in fear, now that free speech is on the brink of collapse for us all ? has your life gotten better??
In a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly, White House Deputy Press Secretary Kush Desai responded to Grande directly. The statement utilized Grande?s song titles ? including ?Save Your Tears,? ?Just Like Magic? and ?Get Well Soon.?
?Save your tears, Ariana. Because President Trump?s actions ended Joe Biden?s inflation crisis and are bringing in trillions in new investment,? Desai said.
?He even signed an executive order just like magic that paved the way for the FTC to crack down on Ticketmaster for ripping off Ariana Grande?s concert-going fans. Get well soon, Ariana!?
Desai makes reference to the Federal Trade Commission?s recent lawsuit aimed at Live Nation and Ticketmaster that claims the entities misled consumers about resale ticket prices. This suit comes a month after it sued a ticket resale company Key Investment Group and affiliated companies including Epic Seats and Totally Tix LLC, alleging that it used illegal methods to secure tickets and resell them at inflated rates for popular concerts, including Taylor Swift?s ?Eras? tour.

Last night, TMZ and People Magazine confirmed that Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have separated and that Keith was the one to leave. Keith has reportedly purchased a separate home in Nashville. They?ve called Nashville their home and their base for well over a decade, but Nicole and Keith travel and work constantly. Apparently, Nicole and her daughters spent most of the summer in England as Nicole filmed Practical Magic 2. Keith was nowhere to be seen. From People Mag?s exclusive:
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban?s separation after nearly 20 years of marriage came as a shock to Hollywood ? but not to his inner circle, a source tells PEOPLE. The source says it ?really hasn?t been a secret? that the Babygirl actress, 58, and the country star, 57, have ?been living separately for a while now.?

Fascinating that the early reports are basically just ?Keith left, he was over it, everyone knew he was over it.? People also noted that Keith and Nicole were last seen together in June in Nashville. After the Daily Mail confirmed Monday that actress Kidman, 58, and country singer Urban, 57, have sensationally separated after 19 years of marriage and two children together, sources suggest it was a lack of intimacy ? as well as their busy schedules ? that ultimately led to the split.
Keith never sees Nicole, either she is filming or he is on tour, one source tells the Daily Mail. There was a lot of love between the two and they might not divorce. They been together for decades so there is a world which they can reconcile, but the way their pairing is now, they are not a couple.
It is understood that Urban was the one to instigate the split, with his unhappiness in the marriage prompting him to call her out. Kidman was blindsided by her husbands intervention, the source said. Urbans main complaint appears to have been a growing coldness between the couple.
The intimacy isnt there, they are just going through the motions [of being married]. If this separation gets them back together, that would be amazing, but Keith had to call her out that he isnt happy, the source continued. She was blindsided, but we shall see how things go during the holiday season and his upcoming birthday [next month]. They have some work to do.

These sources make it sound like the marriage could be rescued, that the separation might not be permanent. I don?t know? everyone else from Urban?s camp really makes it sound like he?s done-done. Then again, no one has filed for divorce and no one has gotten the lawyers involved. The summer apart sounds like a trial separation, and now they?re trying to figure out if any of this is worth saving.

Of all the long-term celebrity marriages, I never really got a sense that Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban were in any trouble. Now, I never believed that they were lovey-dovey 24-7, which is how they like to portray themselves. I think they both love to work and Keith has been on the road a lot throughout their marriage, just as Nicole has a jet-setting career as an actress and producer. Still, I thought they figured out how to make those schedules work for them. I guess not, because Keith apparently left Nicole in the early summer, and they are fully separated now.
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have separated TMZ has learned. Multiple sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ the couple has been living apart since the beginning of summer.
Were told Nicole has been taking care of their 2 children and, holding the family together through this difficult time since Keith has been gone.
As for why, were told its one-sided Nicole did not want the separation and has been trying to save the marriage. One source said, Keith has acquired his own residence in Nashville and has moved out of their family home, which is also in Nashville.
As for whether the couple will divorce to be determined. Keith and Nicole married in 2006. Their kids are 14 and 17.

I do not find the act of waking up in the morning to be gentle or peaceful in any way. Rather, the sound of my alarm sets in motion a somewhat tragic sequence in which I revolt at the very idea of consciousness and grapple with processing my surroundings as alertness ramps up, regretfully. The guttural shock of the wakening plays out in true Groundhog Day fashion, as if each morning were the first morning. This all sounds exceedingly negative and I used to beat myself up about it until I better understood that there legitimately are morning and night people and that most of the world operates on morning people hours. Hey world, stop trying to fit my square peg in the round hole of am hours!! All that preamble to discuss a new interview with Miley Cyrus where she says she swings both ways, identifying as both a morning and night person. So? she?s an awake person. But she readily admits that she leans towards the morning side, and described waking up in the morning with a zeal that I can only dream about.

In a Wednesday, Sept. 24 interview with Vogue to promote her new Maybelline campaign, the ?Malibu? singer got candid about her sleep schedule.
?I?m a morning person and unfortunately I?m kind of a night person too,? Cyrus, 32, said.
She added, ?If I were one or the other, I?m a morning person. I am in the best mood the second that my eyes are open, and it?s unbearable for anyone else around.?
In the past, Cyrus said, she would get ?frustrated? with her friends who would sleep for too long.
?Now I realize that turning on the way that I do is as hard for them as it is for me to turn off,? she explained.
Though she has a lot of energy in the morning, the ?Flowers? songstress said her coffee is ?an absolute must.?
?Today I?m a weirdo that did a cold brew and used regular, degular milk, no special processed thing from the tree. It is just from a regular old cow,? Cyrus said.
Elsewhere in the interview, she opened up about the joys of organizing different areas of her life.
?I am joyful when I?m organizing and cleaning ? it never feels like a task to me,? the ?Angels Like You? singer told the outlet. ?Everything I do in my life is a little bit intense, but it has to be holistic. And that?s why my eras, they?re not a costume, they?re actually like a metamorphosis or a true evolution for me personally.?
She continued, ?I?ve even gained the name Queen of Pristine because in every corner, every drawer, every friendship, every family dynamic, everything is just getting an upgrade in the cleanup.?

Have you watched the trailer for Netflix?s The Woman In Cabin 10? I?m including it at the end of the post the film looks enjoyable, a sort of thriller-on-the-sea, starring Keira Knightley. Keira has been doing more work with Netflix, and I think she enjoys the partnership, and enjoys the diversity in projects she?s being offered. When I saw the trailer for this, I was genuinely surprised that Keira is the lead it feels like something they would have offered to Emily Blunt and like ten other actresses before they got to Keira. That?s not a slam, it?s cool to see Keira in this kind of thing. The film costars Guy Pearce, Hannah Waddingham, David Ajala, Daniel Ings. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Kaya Scodelario, and David Morrissey.
Last night was the London premiere, and I?m including some photos in this post. Keira wore Erdem, an ochre-colored high-neck dress with some very beautiful floral embroidery. I love the fabric and embroidery, but I find the high neck with the frill much too fussy. I also don?t really get the double-belt situation. I dig her boots though. Bring back that style the pretty high-feminine dress with sh-tkicker boots.
I actually love when Aussie Guy Pearce does a posh British accent and plays someone really haughty, evil and rich. He?s very good at it.

Since her divorce, the Duchess of York will basically go to any event that pays her. She turns up at some of the most random-ass red carpets and events I?ve ever seen, still, to this day. Besides those paid gigs, Sarah is still the patron of many charities, and to her credit, she?s always shown up for those charities too. She?s shown up more often than many ?working royals,? let?s say that. Well, no more. Over the weekend, the Mail revealed that Sarah Ferguson sent an apology email to Jeffrey Epstein in 2011. The backstory: in 2010, Epstein gave Sarah a lot of money, she gladly accepted the money, then people found out she accepted the huge sum from a convicted pedophile, so she issued a public apology about it. All of that has been well-known for years. What people didn?t know was that following her public apology, Epstein threatened to sue her, so she sent him a sugary apology email, pledging her friendship to him forever. In the 48 hours after the Mail published the email, seven charities dropped Fergie as their patron.
Seven charities have dropped the Duchess of York as a patron or ambassador after an email from 2011 emerged in which she called sex offender Jeffrey Epstein her supreme friend and seemed to apologise for her public criticism of him.
Julias House, a childrens hospice, was the first to remove Sarah Ferguson, Prince Andrews ex-wife, saying it was inappropriate for her to continue in the role. The Teenage Cancer Trust, Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, Childrens Literacy Charity, National Foundation for Retired Service Animals and Prevent Breast Cancer also announced they had dropped the duchess as patron. The British Heart Foundation said she would no longer be its ambassador.
A spokesperson for the duchess said she was not commenting on the charities decisions.
It comes after the Mail on Sunday and Sun newspapers published a 2011 email from the duchess to Epstein, which appears to have been sent after she had publicly claimed to have broken off contact with him. In the email, she appeared to privately apologise for her public rejection of Epstein, saying: You have always been a steadfast, generous and supreme friend to me and my family.
That seemed to contradict her public denunciation of Epstein in an interview earlier that year, in which she had said her involvement with him had been a gigantic error of judgement and that: What he did was wrong and for which he was rightly jailed.
A spokesperson for the duchess said her subsequent email to Epstein, describing him as a friend, had been sent because she was trying to counter a threat from him to sue her for defamation and that she still really regretted any association with him.

As many have pointed out, it feels like Fergie is being targeted. I?m not saying that what she did was no biggie, but you have to keep in mind, we?ve barely scratched the surface of both Fergie and Andrew?s connections with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. Literally writing ?You have always been a steadfast, generous and supreme friend to me? in black-and-white to a convicted pedophile will take down most public figures, I just didn?t think it would happen to Fergie before it happened to Prince Andrew or Donald Trump. But yeah, this has the feel of Buckingham Palace tossing Fergie right under the bus. Is this? King Charles?s housecleaning? Settling old scores, future-planning, taking care of some final business?

One of things I?m most excited about for After the Hunt?s promotion is seeing more of Chloe Sevigny and Julia Roberts? interactions and conversations. Julia is seven years older than Chloe (57 and 50, respectively) but they?ve both been around for decades, and both are iconic in completely different ways. Chloe is so art-house and offbeat, and Julia is still, however improbably, America?s sweetheart. Julia and Chloe don?t mingle in the same circles and they never even said two words to each other before they met for After the Hunt. Well, here?s something surprising: apparently, they love each other? Like, they get along really well, and Julia was thrilled and nervous to meet Chloe. And Chloe is a big Julia Roberts fan? From the most recent Variety cover story:
Sevigny: Can I say when we left, I needed more Julia. On the plane ride home, I watched, like, three of your movies. I just wanted more!
Variety: Which three?
Sevigny: ?Notting Hill,? ?My Best Friend?s Wedding? and I can?t remember the third. But I was like, ?I just want more Julia!?
Roberts: [Actually tears up.] I am so glad this is being recorded.
Sevigny: I was like, ?I?m not ready to say goodbye.? Luckily there?s a whole canon I can go home and keep watching.
Sevigny on feeling close to Julia: I mean, I felt close to her the first time I met her. But she invited us to her home for rehearsals, and we stayed in her beach house. And she was just very giving and generous.
Roberts on meeting Chloe: I was so excited and intimidated about meeting Chlo. And when we were at my house, we?re all sitting around the kitchen table, and Hazel was making herself some lunch, and we?re talking about the material and rehearsing. Allan [Mandelbaum], our producer, he came in, and he goes, ?Chlo should just be here in a couple minutes.? And I look up, and Ayo looks up, and we match eyes. Luca goes, ?What?? And I go, ?I?m scared.? And Ayo goes, ?Me too.? And Hazel goes, ?I?m leaving.? And then, like a minute later, the doorbell rang, and Hazel goes, ?I?m leaving through the garage.? And truly we were so excited and intimidated.

It?s not that I thought Chloe and Julia would hate each other on sight, it?s that I thought Chloe would approach Julia with an eyeroll, like, oh, whatever, a movie star! Chloe has softened though, and she?s also having some kind of career renaissance. I think it?s more like she?s gotten to the age where she can just do full-time supporting roles and character work (which is great!). Anyway, I think it?s really cool that Julia and Chloe like each other now. They?re friends! Chloe stayed at Julia?s beach house! Crazy world.
