Pre-strike, Charlize Theron gave several interviews to promote her Dior contract. I don?t actually think it would have been in violation of strike promotional guidelines if she gave the interviews during the strike, but whatever, I just thought I?d mention that this InStyle piece was done months ago. Charlize has been the face of Diors Jadore perfume for nearly two decades, and now she?s the face of Dior?s latest fragrance, LOr de Jadore. Charlize chatted with InStyle about sense memory, how she applies perfume and the ?90s trend she hated the most. Some highlights:
The cloud mist? strategy for applying perfume: Her spritzing method allows her to enjoy all the facets of a scent without overwhelming her nose and ? most importantly ? her skin. I find direct [contact] on the skin becomes, for me, a little aggressive, and then I miss the subtle tones to it. Whereas when I do the cloud mist, I feel like I get more of the depth of field. I get a better sense of the other dimensions of the scent, especially since its constantly changing as your day goes by.
Sense memory from her childhood in South Africa. There was always something about rain hitting dust ? it creates this smell thats just so unique. I get very excited when I see rain because then I look for some dust, some dirt, and I try to recreate it. Ive never been able to. But that is a very nostalgic smell for me. When I go back and we have our rains in South Africa, its everywhere. You can smell it everywhere. Man, it just fills my soul. Im like, This is home.'
Fragrance mastermind Francis Kurkdjian created LOr: Hes infused classic Jadore notes of rose, jasmine, and ylang-ylang with orange blossom, lily of the valley, and violet for a rich floral scent thats warm and rounded ? perfect for a sweet fall scent. Its beautiful, says Theron. The floral tones are just so layered.
She doesn?t incorporate scent into character-building: I sometimes go as far as just eliminating even scent in my soap. Because I am very sensitive to smell, any kind of smell can just really take me out of it. So its become more about elimination than about adding.
Her beauty regret: Hands down, the thin eyebrows in the 90s. Im still recovering from that.

Unpopular opinion, but I think the bushy-eyebrow trend will come back to haunt people years from now, moreso than the thin eyebrows from the ?90s. While overplucking never looks good, neither does the big, dark, caterpillar-brow trend. As for applying perfume? I find it depends on the perfume. If I?m wearing something cheap (like a body spray) or I just want a light scent, I do the cloud mist thing too, and I walk into the perfume cloud. If I actually want to smell the perfume on my skin, I spray it directly on my throat and wrists.

Back in 2017, there were strong rumors that Charlize Theron and Gabriel Aubry were hooking up. At the time, Charlize was single and Gabriel probably was too, and he had been pretty quiet for a few years following his heated custody and child support battle with Halle Berry. The basis for the 2017 rumor was that Charlize and Gabriel actually did know each other and their kids went to the same LA school. There were even photos of Gabe and Charlize talking during a school run. Well, five years later, that same rumor is being dusted off.
Spring fling! Charlize Theron has a new man in her life, an insider exclusively reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly.
?Charlize has been hooking up with Gabriel Aubry,? the source says of the Oscar winner, 46, and the model, 45. ?They?re very casual and enjoying each other.?
The Fate of the Furious actress and the Canada native were previously linked in 2017 after they were photographed together, but Theron denied rumors that they were dating. ?I?ve never met him,? the Atomic Blonde star said during a July 2017 episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. ?I met him for, like, three seconds. Like, passing I was just like, ?Hi!? because our kids go to the same school.?
The South African star is mom to daughters Jackson, 10, and August, 8, whom she adopted in 2012 and 2015, respectively. Aubry, for his part, shares daughter Nahla, 14, with ex-girlfriend Halle Berry, from whom he split in 2010.
While Theron and the golf enthusiast have connected with each other, the insider notes that they?re still taking it slow. ?It?s nothing serious,? the source explains to Us exclusively.

It?s pretty random for this rumor to get a second life five years later! Especially since Charlize, to me, doesn?t seem to prioritize romance or even hooking up. Her priorities are her daughters and her mom. She?s built a wall around her family unit. Sean Penn briefly scaled the wall and something happened between them Charlize ran away and ghosted him and she doesn?t want to talk about any of it. Charlize doesn?t really seem to have a type. So? whatever. If they?re hooking up, good for them. If not, I?m sure they?re both fine.

Charlize Theron had a totally gnarly b-day over the weekend, dudes. Charlize, who turned 46, celebrated with an 80s prom-themed murder mystery on a boat. About a week ago, she?d posted a short video of her and her daughters jumping from a boat. So, I dug around and found out that they are vacationing on what looks to be a luxury yacht off the Greek island Paros along with Charlize?s mom, Gerda. My guess is her friends flew in for her birthday over the weekend and staged this murder mystery party, replete with big hair, ?killer? fashion and what sounds like Charlize?s every wish come true.

On Saturday, the actress rang in her 46th birthday by revealing that she celebrated her special day with a 1980s prom-themed, murder mystery party on a boat.
Theron shared an image of herself wearing a Pink Birthday Girl T-shirt, which she accessorized with a pair of denim jean shorts and colorful bead necklaces around her neck. The Mad Max: Fury Road star also posted a group photo from the celebration, where each of her guests played their parts dressed in decades-old fashion.
Well I never got to go to prom, but this year for my bday my friends decided to change that, Theron wrote. I love these humans more than words can describe.
Only they could know that an 80s prom murder mystery party on a boat is my literal dream birthday. What a family, what a night ?, she added.

I love that this was Charlizes prom! I?m reading the element of surprise in her caption. I can?t imagine the logistics of coordinating a surprise party with people flying in, on a boat, in another country. My guess is she?d planned on her friends coming to Greece for her birthday, but maybe she didn?t know they?d arranged for the 80s murder mystery party. Whatever the story, it looks like a great time, an 80s-themed prom murder mystery sounds like a blast. CB just invited me to my first murder mystery party with her Zoom group. I had such a great time (thanks, everyone!) And that was online, I can only imagine what running around a yacht would add. My guess is the Prom Queen was the victim, in which case I?m voting the cheerleader the killer. It?s always the cheerleader. Whoever was convicted, I?m glad Charlize got the party of her dreams and was able to relive its glory in the beauty of Greece the following day. Sounds magical.
Although? I have some notes. That?s a lot of tulle for a prom? or anything outside a ballet recital or a Madonna video. Props to the Hammer pants, but the overall sleeve game is weak. There should be poufs, huge shoulders and drapes everywhere (weather is no excuse, see: Miami Vice.) Mostly the hair gets top marks, although I?m disappointed not see one side pony in the whole group. They got the size of the cell phones right, though.
What would your ideal murder mystery party theme be? Mine would be society wedding with either the bride or the mother of the bride as the victim.

One of my favorite Netflix movies from last year will begin filming its sequel in early 2022 and I am stoked. Having to wait another year for The Old Guard is gagging me but if the sequel is good the wait will be well worth it. Charlize Theron confirmed to Variety that the script for The Old Guard 2 was completed and that they will start filming in 2022. Charlize also said that Nicky and Joe will be returning and I am excited (they were the best same sex couple on Netflix last year in my opinion). Below are a few more details from Variety:
It?s official! Charlize Theron tells me that the script is done for the sequel to ?The Old Guard,? her Netflix film adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name. Cameras will start rolling in the first quarter of 2022. The gay couple, played by Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli, will be back, too. ?Oh, yeah!? Theron says. ?They?re definitely there.?

I need to read the graphic novels so that I know what is actually going on. I went looking on the Google for more information about the storyline and to see if original director Gina Prince-Bythewood would be returning to direct and I found nothing. Gina was tapped to do #2 when Netflix announced the sequel but things can change and nothing has been confirmed. I absolutely loved what Gina did with the original material and the entire cast was phenomenal. And I love the fact that the first film had a female-led production team. The breakout star in the first movie of course was Kiki Layne and I know she will be returning. I also hope that Kikis Nile will get that love interest that she was hoping for. My favorite gay couple is back too and I am looking forward to seeing where Netflix takes this franchise. And the bonus of being a fan of The Old Guard is I get to continue to see Charlize kicking ass and being a badass on my screen.

She has been without a boyfriend/partner since Penn though. That ham-face really did some damage, and she?s never really been clear on what exactly happened. When you realize that the Ham was her last serious relationship and that was five years ago? yeah, it does make me a little bit sad for her. Charlize was a guest (via Zoom) on Drew Barrymore?s new talk show. They bonded over their single-parenthood and how they don?t need men in their lives at the moment:

I think both things can be true: motherhood completely adjusted her priorities AND Sean Penn did a number on her. But I also think? yeah, I get her energy completely. She?s happy as can be, she?s doing good work, she has two healthy and happy kids and she?s got her mom with her full-time. Why would she at this point in her life need to placate some dude?s ego?

I actually sort of believe that she dates or maybe has some casual hookups here and there, but Penn was her last for-real relationship. I enjoy her single-mom vibe so much because she?s so matter-of-fact about it. Except that now her two daughters are at the age where they want to know why mommy doesn?t have a boyfriend or husband. Charlize shut that sh-t down in a hurry though:

?Two days ago I was in the car with my two girls and my little one said something like ?You need a boyfriend!? she said Thursday on Diane Von Furstenberg?s Spotify podcast, ?InCharge with DVF.?
?And I said, ?Actually, I don?t. Right now, I feel really good,? and she?s like, ?You know what, mom? You just need a boyfriend, you need a relationship!? Theron ? who has two adopted children; 8-year-old Jackson and 5-year-old August ? continued, telling her daughter that she?s in a relationship with herself right now. ?She had this look in her eye like she had never really contemplated that that was even a possibility. Her mind was blown. But, I know that was the day that she realized there?s a different possibility.?
She said she has thrown herself into motherhood ? and had wanted to adopt since she was 8 years old. She has been honest about raising her transgender daughter Jackson, alongside her other daughter August, and said: ?The thing that was really eye-opening to me was, my children kind of came to me in this unexpected way, where you know ? I didn?t know I was going to be the mom to two African-American girls. I didn?t know I was going to be the mom to an African-American trans girl. All of these things have kind of made me more aware of how little I know. My children have completely reopened my eyes to the world and I jokingly always say I?m back at university. I?m back having to learn every single day because they challenge me in that way.?

I would think that Jackson and August are at the age where they see their school peers and their peers? families and wonder why there isn?t a man in mom?s life. It?s not that her daughters honestly believe that Charlize needs a man, it?s just that they don?t know what it would look like and they?re curious. I love the way Charlize Theron approaches relationships and men. She basically says ?who cares? and ?who needs any of it.? She has her kids and her mom and if some dude wants to take her out to dinner, she?ll go, but she doesn?t need any of that. She?s been like that for years now, basically ever since she adopted her second child and since she broke up with Sean Penn in 2015. However, as much as I respect Charlize?s ?I don?t need a man? vibe post-Penn, I do think she?s sort of an unreliable narrator on that relationship specifically. I have a theory about this, actually. I still believe, years later, that some very serious sh-t went down between Charlize and Penn. It was a lot like Angelina and Brad and whatever happened on the plane something happened between Penn and Theron after which she ran screaming away from him. The split was so sudden and so dramatic, she ghosted him and he sulkily moved out of her house just days after the incident. If Charlize doesn?t want to talk about it, that?s fine and it?s her business. But she?s played a bit fast and loose with the details around that relationship, probably to protect herself and her kids. Anyway, Howard Stern asked her about Penn and she said some stuff:

She continued, It was a relationship, for sure. We were definitely exclusive, but it was for barely a year. We never moved in. I was never going to marry him. It was nothing like that.
Penn and Theron began dating in 2013. The two split in 2015, an insider confirmed to PEOPLE at the time.
When Stern, 66, asked the Mad Max: Fury Road actress if she ever thought of marriage or felt lonely, Theron said, I never wanted to get married. That?s never been something that?s important to me. On the lives of my children, I?ve never been lonely. I?ve never felt alone, she said, adding she wasnt afraid of romantic relationships. My life right now just doesn?t allow a lot of room for something like that to happen. But in saying that, there?s not this thing that drives me [to have a romantic relationship]. I enjoy being set up on dates but I don?t know if I?ll ever be able to live with somebody again. To be totally frank, they might have to buy the house next to me. I don?t know if I?m going to be able to deal with that ever again, I?m too old for that s?.

The truth is that we?ll probably never know what happened between Sean and Charlize. We?ll never know how serious they actually were, whether he planned to adopt with her, whether he proposed to her, or what he did to cause the split. But I remember the stories around that time maybe they weren?t engaged, but Sean was absolutely behaving like a father/stepfather to Jackson (Sean even brought Jackson to interviews to show off his parenting skills) and they were absolutely super-serious about one another. But whatever. I still believe Penn is trash and Charlize is better off without him. And I love that Charlize doesn?t feel the need to conform to whatever it is that women are ?supposed? to do, like get married or want to cohabitate or any of that.

Charlize Theron wore Dior for the Oscars, big surprise. Maybe it?s because I was recently looking through an Oscar-fashion retrospective on Charlize?s looks throughout the years, but sometimes it does feel like Charlize phones it in. She chooses the right years to phone it in, to be fair. Charlize was nominated for Bombshell but she knew she wasn?t going to win, and the dress reflects her ?Oscar loser? status. It?s ?big? enough for a nominee, but it?s also kind of a snooze overall.
Greta Gerwig in custom Dior. First off, the necklace is outstanding. The necklace is great and it works beautifully with her face, her haircut, her coloring. The problem is that there?s a tonal-green problem between the emeralds and the dress. The dress is too olive/muddy and so the emeralds kind of look ?off.? Still, I like what she was trying to do. The ensemble probably would have worked had the dress been black or white.
I feel like Blac Chyna just turned up at the Oscars uninvited and she dared people to throw her out. I still don?t know why she was there, but here she is in a Dona Matoshi robe-dress and little else. Seriously, as I was looking through the photos of Chyna, I swear I saw EVERYTHING from certain angles. Also: she?s gotten some new face work, right?

The 2020 BAFTAs were held last night in London. I always forget that this awards show actually brings out some interesting fashion. I also forget (every year) that the red carpet is exceptionally well-staged for photos. Unlike the Oscars, there aren?t 20 publicists and various flunkies gawking behind celebrities in photos. The lighting is usually pretty good too! And everything just seems more dignified. So? maybe that?s why Charlize Theron decided to really BRING IT for the BAFTAs. She wore this absolutely stunning custom Dior and part of me is SO MAD that she did not save this look for the Oscars. If she looks this amazing at the BAFTAs, that can only mean that she?ll show up to the Oscars bright orange and with her hair fashioned into a Beatles-esque bowl cut. Anyway, one of the best looks of the night, if not THE best. The only minor change? She kind of needs a bracelet, right?
Ella Balinska in Giambattista Valli. When mullet dresses go wrong? Or when they go right? I?m not a fan of mullet dresses and it absolutely looks like she wrapped a dust ruffle around her shoulders like a cape. And yet? the dress is definitely helped by her youth and beauty. Instead of looking bonkers, it looks fun and un-serious.
Jessie Buckley is underrated in Judy. I haven?t seen her hustle too much, but I hope she?s getting work. Unfortunately, she wore this tragic Miu Miu to the awards show. YIKES.
This is actually the right silhouette for Olivia Colman and it?s actually a lovely dress. Just a couple of edits and I think this would be one of her best looks ever?

I?m trying to get into the high-fashion mood ahead of this weekend?s BAFTAs and the upcoming Oscars two Sundays from now. These are photos from last night?s Costume Designers Guild Awards. The big winners in film were for JoJo Rabbit (Excellence in Period Film), Knives Out (Jenny Eagan) for Contemporary Film and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (Ellen Mirojnick) for Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film. Charlize Theron was there to represent Bombshell, and she went all out in this surprisingly gorgeous Louis Vuitton gown. Charlize likes some fashion drama and she can really pull off these BIG looks. Honestly, I think this is my favorite look on Charlize from the entire awards season thus far? And that?s mostly because her hair finally looks cute with that gold headband. Her terrible hair has been ruining what would have been good looks for two months now.
Mindy Kaling was the MC/host of the CDGAs, and she wore a custom Salvador Perez gown. Again, it?s appropriate for an awards show for costume designers I love a velvet dress, but I would like to edit this somehow. It feels a bit dated? Her hair looks great though.
Weirdly, I friggin? loved Nathalie Emmanuel in this David Koma Fall look usually I don?t like sheer panels and I have a special dislike of embroidered sheer panels, but this completely works. Love the butterfly energy!!
