On this site, I once wrote about how my parents would rub an alcohol-soaked finger across my gums when I was a teething baby. I considered it an old-school method of dealing with a teething baby, and I still believe that method was probably quite common for parents in the ?50s, ?60s and ?70s. Well, people acted like my parents were handing me a bottle full of liquor! Commenters were so outraged, I still remember that. Well, I thought about that today as I read this new Margot Robbie story. Apparently, when she was growing up in Australia in the 1990s, her mom used to give her Kahlua-and-milk as a bribe to finish her homework. OH MY GOD.
Margot Robbie admitted that her mother Sarie Kessler used to mix her a drink with Kahlua when it came time for her to do homework as a kid. Robbie, 35, laughed off the confession when she appeared on the Table Manners podcast on Wednesday, Feb. 11, as she promoted her new movie Wuthering Heights. During the podcast, the Australian actress discussed her familys dinner habits growing up with the podcasts British hosts Jessie Ware and her mother Lennie.
In our house, [dinner] would often be late, because things were often quite disorganized, Robbie shared, after describing her preferred pre-dinner snacks, which included a cheese board and a bowl of nuts and bolts ? cereal, nuts and dried noodles ? that she would eat at five oclock, or fivezies, as Robbie called it. Its also like a family thing ? you have a rum and Coke [and] some nuts and bolts.
When Ware, 41, and her mother Lennie asked Robbie how old she was when she began drinking rum and Coke, she added, Honestly, my mum used to, in order to get us to sit ? I dont know if I should share this ? she used to give us Kahlua and milk so that we would do our homework.
Wed be running around like maniacs and shes like, Sit at the bench and do your homework, she added as the podcasts hosts laughed. And I love a White Russian. Thats probably why.
Robbie grew up as the third of four children in her household: she has one older sister, Anya, an older brother named Lachlan and younger brother named Cameron. (Both of Margots brothers work in Hollywood, while Anya works as an accountant.) The Robbie siblings grew up on a farm on Australias Gold Coast, and their father Doug left Sarie and their children when Margot was 5 years old.
I was very much a bogan growing up, though I did not realize it at the time, Margot said on the Table Manners podcast, using a self-deprecating Australian slang term for someone of a low social class as she described her familys eating habits.

Going from memory, last night was the second time in the past year where Margot Robbie showed up to a premiere half-naked, then stood awkwardly next to her full-clothed male costar. Inevitably, the guy looks like an idiot for trying to serve face while Margot?s ass is hanging out. You can see the guys try to offer Margot their coat or their protection and she always refuses. So it was last night at the London premiere of Wuthering Heights (the quotes are part of the title). Margot wore a corseted and mostly sheer Dilara Findikoglu gown.
It?s impossible to discuss the gown without discussing the inspiration for the gown. Apparently, Margot got permission to borrow Charlotte Bronte?s bracelet. It?s a piece of Victorian mourning jewelry, with an amethyst set on a strap constructed from Emily Bronte and Anne Bronte?s hair (Emily wrote Wuthering Heights, Charlotte wrote Jane Eyre). Charlotte survived both of her sisters, and so she had their hair finely braided and turned into a custom jewelry piece. Vogue claims that the bracelet is a replica, but other outlets say that Margot wore the real bracelet, so I have no idea. It?s being said that Dilara Findikoglu designed the dress around the bracelet, and it appears as if the gown is adorned in hair-like twine as well. Beyond bracelet (which may or may not be authentic), Margot also wore pieces from the Boucheron archives and some newer pieces from Jessica McCormack. Margot?s stylist Andrew Mukumal is absolutely insane. It was raining at the premiere as well! I would have been so worried about water damage on those archival pieces. And if Im being honest, the whole look all together is giving Xena Warrior Princess rather than Wuthering Heights.
What else? Jacob Elordi looked fine in all-grey. I?m not wild about his facial hair these days, but whatever. He?s fine. He was pretty concerned about Margot as well, it looked like he was trying to keep her warm and protect her from the rain. Charli XCX was there too (she did the music) she wore a bridal Erdem look.

A consistent criticism of many current actresses is that they simply look too ?modern? for any kind of period drama. That?s especially true of many American actresses, and I would argue that British actresses tend to look more period-piece ready (think Kiera Knightley, Mia Goth, Anya Taylor Joy, Olivia Colman, Helen Mirren, etc). There?s always a social media discourse about ?Instagram Face,? as in? if you look like a filtered Instagram influencer, you?re probably not going to get cast in a Jane Austen adaptation. I often think this discourse is unfair to actresses because people are projecting their own bullsh-t unto who can and cannot ?pull off? a period role or period costume.
Well, all that being said, I think the ?too modern for period drama? discourse is completely fair in Margot Robbie?s case. She looks like what she is: a modern woman, a 21st century blonde who grew up on an Australian beach. Every clip or glimpse I?ve seen from Wuthering Heights just shows that Margot was badly miscast as Cathy. I would even argue that Jacob Elordi comes close to pulling off Heathcliff (minus the whitewashing controversy), and that Jacob actually has that thing where he looks convincing in period pieces and period costume. But not Margot.
I bring this up because of these photos from the Paris premiere of Wuthering Heights. Margot has been trying to wear Wuthering-themed dresses and style herself with a mid-19th-century vibe for the premieres and it?s not working!! My God, it?s really not working. Margot?s dress here is a custom Chanel, and I assume it was customized to have a 19th century feel. She also wore a Lorraine Schwartz diamond necklace with over 100 carats. Sigh.
It looks like real reviews of WH have been embargoed until closer to the release, but I keep seeing tweets from people who have seen some early screenings and they?re mostly disappointed rather than shocked and turned on.

Last night, Wuthering Heights premiered in LA. This is Emerald Fennell?s adaptation, and it?s beyond clear that this is not a faithful adaptation of the novel. It?s also beyond obvious that the casting for Cathy and Heathcliff is? not great. But I?m sure a lot of women will see it and enjoy it, and that?s nice. I?m trying to balance ?it?s nice for filmmakers to make movies for a specifically female audience? versus ?wow, this movie looks like a pile of garbage.?
Margot Robbie wore a rather spectacular Schiaparelli gown for the premiere this is a big statement dress, and while it?s not what I would have chosen for her, it?s going to get so much attention from the fashion blogs. What was even more interesting than the dress was Margot?s choice in jewelry. She borrowed pieces from Lorainne Schwartz and Fred Leighton. She also got to borrow an extremely special necklace from Elizabeth Taylor?s estate. This is the Cartier Taj Mahal necklace given to Elizabeth Taylor by Richard Burton for her 40th birthday. It?s featured in Taylor?s incredible coffee table book, My Love Affair with Jewelry. It was one of her favorite pieces.
Charli XCX did the music for the film, and she?s been involved in the promotion too. She wore a custom Vivienne Westwood dress to the premiere she loves Westwood, and I feel like she?s more ?on theme? than Margot.

Margot Robbie went with Barbiecore for her BAFTA look, doing a black-and-pink custom Armani Priv gown with black gloves. People are really doing gloves a lot these days and you can tell the ladies are out of practice. No, honestly, Margot?s gloves look fine and I think Margot assumes that we want or expect her to wear Barbiecore throughout the entire awards season. Maybe that?s true? I don?t know. But it?s going to be quite an adjustment once this whole ride is over!
If Claire Foy is going to do one thing in this world, it?s wear something fringed. She has been wearing fringed ensembles for MONTHS. I guess it?s a minor trend, but also: she?s seeking it out. It?s pretty easy to avoid wearing this much fringe. This dress is also Armani Priv it would be lovely without the boob fringe, I?m sure.

Here are some photos from Monday?s Oscar luncheon, always one of the nicest events on the awards-season calendar. There?s no real dress code other than ?look nice for this year?s class photo? and you get a nice lunch. There?s always a lot of media involved too. Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig both showed up, because they were nominated as producer and screenwriter, not lead actress and director. Margot wore a custom Chanel look which I don?t really like, but she?s still doing her Barbie-dressing and that?s cool. Greta looked terrible the black socks with the white pumps, I?m dying!!! WTF.
I?m including pics of Carey Mulligan (in a great black dress), Robert Downey Jr. (wearing lifts and snazzy pants), Emily Blunt (I love her ensemble but not her face work), Paul Giamatti, Ryan Gosling, Jeffrey Wright, Emma Stone (I?m sure her suit is Louis Vuitton), America Ferrera, Colman Domingo (easily the best-dressed man of the awards season) and Lily Gladstone. It?s been more than a week since the Oscar nominations were announced and we learned that Oscar voters didn?t think Greta Gerwig deserved an Oscar nomination for directing Barbie, nor did the voters think Margot Robbie?s performance as Barbie was worthy of a Best Actress nom. Those same voters absolutely thought America Ferrera and Ryan Gosling were worthy of Oscar noms though, and Barbie is nominated for Best Picture, which means Margot is nominated as a producer. Greta is nominated in adapted screenplay because her original screenplay was ?adapted? from? dolls. Again, the whole thing is still shocking, ridiculous, sexist and asinine. AMPAS continues to look so foolish. Margot didn?t issue any statements about the snubs last week, but she took part in a SAG-AFTRA screening on Tuesday, and she ended up addressing the situation:
?There?s no way to feel sad when you know you?re this blessed,? Margot Robbie said during a panel at a special SAG screening on Tuesday night.
?Obviously I think Greta should be nominated as a director, because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing, what she pulled off, it really is,? Robbie said. ?But it?s been an incredible year for all the films.?
Barbie is the only billion-dollar film solely directed by a woman, and it outstripped all other films at the box office last year, bringing home $1.4 billion worldwide. As Robbie said, the reaction to the film has become a kind of cultural phenomenon: ?I just suspect it?s bigger than us. It?s bigger than this movie, it?s bigger than our industry.?
Robbie also clearly pointed out that she is ?beyond ecstatic that we?ve got eight Academy Award nominations, it?s so wild.? Those nominations include Best Picture, Supporting Actress for America Ferrera; Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, Costume Design, Production Design and Best Adapted Screenplay for Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. ?Everyone getting the nods that they?ve had is just incredible, and the Best Picture nod,? Robbie said.
?We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it?s already done that, and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.?
Robbie had the SAG screening audience laughing as she described listening in movie theater bathrooms for audience reactions and then being in a pub in Scotland overhearing a group of men on a bachelor party trip discussing the film. ?It was just truly fascinating,? she said. ?There were people at the table who refused to see the Barbie movie. One guy was like, ?Dude, it is a cultural moment, don?t you want to be a part of culture?? And the other guy was like, ?I?ll never see it,? and by the end he did want to see it. It was a whole thing.? Robbie recalled she couldn?t resist approaching the group to say hello. ?It took a full minute for them to realize, and I was practically out the door. And then they were like, ?Ohhhh!? It was very funny.?
?People?s reactions to the movie have been the biggest reward of this entire experience, whether it?s having a moment like that, or whether it?s listening in the bathrooms, or whether it?s seeing what people are writing online, or even just seeing how much Pink I can see in this room right now. I?ve never been a part of something like this. Not like this. I?ve done comic book stuff and that gets a big reaction, but this felt very different. It still feels very different. And I can?t think of a time when a movie?s had this effect on culture. And it?s amazing to be in the eye of the storm.?

A completely mature and measured response from a woman who executive produced and starred in a film about how women are diminished, marginalized and dismissed. What else can she say, really? ?Those fking misogynistic douchebags!? Of course not. She?s still got to play the game to some degree. I hate that she has to eat those snubs and she?s still expected to show up with a smile on her face, to be grateful for those eight nominations. If only there was a well-written speech about just that in Barbie!! But I also agree with her that Barbie?s cultural impact is huge, and the film?s impact on the industry is huge. Which makes it all the more egregious that she and Greta were snubbed.

I?m going to keep writing about the Oscar snubs for Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, even though some of y?all are going to keep commenting sh-t like ?but it was a bad movie? and ?they didn?t deserve anything.? If you want to keep doing the patriarchy?s work, so be it, I can?t stop you. As I?ve said, I?m enjoying all of the thinkpieces, analysis and reactions to the snubs. It?s fascinating to watch as Oscar voters freak out (in a sort of ?are we the villains?? way) and it?s interesting to see, like, Oscar historians talk about how significant these snubs were.
Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwigs individual omissions from the recently announced Oscars 2024 nominations wont be forgotten anytime soon, according to an expert.
Its definitely not a good look that the Academy members left out Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie for directing and starring in a movie thats largely about how impressive women are often marginalized, says Dave Karger, Turner Classic Movies host and author of 50 Oscar Nights.
Even though [Robbie and Gerwig] both received nominations for their work on Barbie in other categories, these two high-profile omissions will be remembered ? and they will Sting ? for a long time, Karger tells PEOPLE.
The films comedic nature may have also affected overall nominations, he adds.
I do think that the Academy membership has a bit of a bias, unconscious or otherwise, against true comedies and towards heavier dramas, says Karger. Greta and Margot surely made it on to thousands of ballots, but since those ballots are weighted towards voters? No. 1 and No. 2 favorites, we can assume they simply didn?t earn enough of those top-tier votes.

Is he saying it will Sting for Robbie and Gerwig, or it will Sting for the Academy that they bungled it so badly? As all of the Barbie-haters have screamed a million times by now, Gerwig and Robbie will both be fine Barbie?s success ensures that they will get to make anything they want with any kind of financing. Robbie proved herself as one of the top producers in the industry, and Greta is already working on Narnia. But yeah, the snubs will ?sting? for Robbie and Gerwig personally and professionally, and they?ll also Sting for the industry. If there?s one thing AMPAS doesn?t want, it?s to look this out of touch, this sexist, this anti-woman. AMPAS has spent years trying to weather the ?Oscars So White? issues, and now their voters are discriminating against white women who made the most successful and creative movie of the year? Come on, it?s bad.

The Barbie team had a good night at the Golden Globes. While they didn?t pick up Best Director, Best Actress or Best Picture, they won Original Screenplay, Production Design, Costume Design, Hair and Makeup, Best Comedy and Best Song, for Ryan Gosling?s ?I?m Just Ken.? I wonder if it will be similar at the Oscars, with Barbie sweeping awards for costuming and design, while Oppenheimer picks up the bigger awards.
Margot Robbie seemingly skipped the Barbie cosplay for the Critics Choice and instead wore this custom Balmain. I?m not really into it, although I think it looks fine on her. Margot looks too undone for the dress, right? Her hair barely looks styled and she has the vibe of ?I just threw this on.?
I?m also adding photos of Ryan Gosling who seemed shocked with the ?I?m Just Ken? win and Greta Gerwig, who wore Molly Goddard. Also including pics of Billie Eilish (who was nominated in Best Song), wearing Thom Browne.

Barbie has crossed $1.1 billion at the domestic and international box office. It is Warner Bros? second-highest-grossing film of all time. It is the highest grossing film directed by a woman (solo). Everyone in the industry has rushed to give Warner Bros credit for Barbie?s success. Everyone rushed to give Greta Gerwig credit for directing and co-writing the script and doing it such a smart way. All of that is well-deserved, but give Margot Robbie her flowers too. She executive produced it through her company, LuckyChap. She pitched the film to Mattel. She hired Greta to write and direct. Margot got Mattel to sign off on Gerwig?s script and Margot fought for Gerwig?s vision the whole time. And while doing all of that behind-the-scenes, Margot played a brilliant version of Barbie and she really was the only actress who could have played that part. Well, no one is in a rush to acknowledge Margot?s role in bringing Barbie to the big screen, but at least Margot is getting PAID.
Margot Robbie is being richly rewarded for her key role in bringing ?Barbie? to the big screen. The star and producer behind the summer?s biggest hit stands to make roughly $50 million in salary and box office bonuses, according to three individuals with knowledge of her deal.
?Barbie? director and co-writer Greta Gerwig will also likely receive bonuses because of the film?s outsized success. ?Barbie? has earned an astonishing $526.3 million at the domestic box office since it opened a month ago, as well as $657.6 million at the international box office. That comes out to $1.18 billion globally ? and that figure should keep climbing given that ?Barbie? is still topping box office charts.
In addition to bringing the popular children?s toy to glittering life, Robbie produced the film through her production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, which she founded in 2014 with her now-husband, Tom Ackerley, and friends Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr. The goal of the company was to tell women?s stories on screen and support women creators behind the scenes. Its slate of projects includes the Oscar-nominated ?Promising Young Woman,? the superhero sequel ?Birds of Prey? and the Netflix series ?Maid.?

She also produced I, Tonya, which got her an Oscar nomination (well-deserved). It would not surprise me at all if she picked up her third and perhaps fourth Oscar nominations next year, for actress and producer. While I do wish Margot was getting more credit for Barbie, I do think that LuckyChap really became a player here while they were already becoming known for producing good, interesting projects, this is next level. Barbie?s success means that they get their pick of scripts and directors from here on out. Plus the $50 million paycheck for Margot is probably very nice. I wonder if Margot?s contract also had a clause about potential sequels?
