As the ramp up for the Oscar campaigns, Variety is releasing its annual roundtables. As a part of the Actors on Actors series, Hugh Jackman and Willem Dafoe sat in a stylish room, looking lovely in all black ensembles while discussing their current Oscar offerings (The Florida Project for Willem and Logan for Hugh). During their chat, Willem asked Hugh why he decided to hang up his claws after 17 years. Apparently, it was all Jerry Seinfeld?s fault.
When Jackman asked the famous comic how he decided to end his hit series ?Seinfeld,? ?He said, ?I?ve always believed, you should never spend everything creatively because it?s almost herculean to start up again. You should always have something in the tank,’? Jackman recalled. ?Leave the party before it gets too late kind of theory.?
Jackman decided on the way home from that dinner that his upcoming film, ?Logan,? would be his final in that role. He then came up with the idea of treating the character as a human being (instead of a superhero) who?s lived a life of violence.

Technically, Hugh is currently promoting The Greatest Showman but I think his shot for any award this year is going to be Logan. I would love for Showman to be a fun film and successful but as I?ve said, I have some doubts. As for Seinfeld?s advice, I agree completely about walking away while people still want more. There?s no need to drag out a franchise well past its sell-by date. Personally, not only would I like to see roles/films go out on top, I?d prefer they don?t come back. I?ve been disappointed in many of the ?returns? of late.
Hugh also said in the discussion that on the very first X-Men film, which was released two years before Willem?s Spiderman film, Kevin Fiege was the assistant to the producer. 17 years seems like a while ago when it comes to a film opening but in terms of Fiege?s career, it seems like a blink. You can watch Hugh and Willem?s chat here ? there a many nice moments and they are so down to earth, which is refreshing for two very talented and very accomplished men.
In the current revelations about how far-reaching sexual harassment goes, many of us have made up a list of people we desperately hope to never read about in that context and I know Hugh is on many of your (our) lists. So far, both Hugh and Willem remain the good guys we hope they are. At another Envelope Roundtable, Hugh addressed the sexual harassment that?s comes to light.
I just have unbelievable empathy and am so inspired by all the people coming out. I think the amount of shame and guilt that is attached to this entire subject, and the courage it takes to step forward is humbling to me. I don?t think it matters if you?re a man or a woman, it?s a human issue. On some level, it?s really a great opportunity, beyond just our industry, really among society.

I really do think Hugh is who he purports to be. I think he has a marvelous partner in Deb who seems to have helped him find a balance between his personal and professional life.
Last note ? at one point, Willem and Hugh agree on dancing and decide to make a musical together. They shook hands on it. Let?s hold them to it, folks, a Willem Dafoe Hugh Jackman musical might just save the world.

Do you remember how Ben Affleck was shopping for a home, with Lindsay Shookus in tow, just a few weeks ago in LA? Well shortly after that he was rented an apartment in New York where he and Lindsay could stay together while he was visiting here there. Lindsay is reportedly staying there while Ben is away and it sounds amazing. It had three bedrooms, 2,761 square feet and panoramic views. Apartments in that building go for around $28,000 a month and of course there’s a butler, pool, movie theater and I’m sure a gym. This news came out last week but I just read about it now, so I wanted to report on it. Here’s People’s story:
Ben Affleck and Lindsay Shookus are sharing a lavish New York City apartment when the actor is in town.
The Justice League is paying for the Upper West Side apartment and stays there with Shookus when he?s in the city, a source tells PEOPLE. The Saturday Night Live producer moved in about a month ago.
Affleck?s focus continues to be on his family and staying healthy, another family source says, adding that part of his happiness is being with Shookus.
The 2,761 square foot apartment includes 3 bedrooms, panoramic views of both Central Park and the Hudson River, a private movie theater, pool and 24/7 butler service. Apartments in the luxury building lease for an average of more than $28,000 a month.

That’s some perk to dating Ben Affleck. I’m sure Lindsay makes bank, but not enough to afford a place like that. Meanwhile Ben was spotted out in LA over the weekend with his estranged wife, Jennifer Garner. They were seen out taking a walk on Friday and you can see that photo here. They look very matchy and well dressed. Then, on Saturday, they went to shop for a Christmas tree with their kids. The Daily Mail has those photos, they’re exclusive. As for everyone who says they’re just doing what they have to do for the kids, I get spending Thanksgiving and the holidays together but it seems like they do more than most couples who intend to get a divorce. Every couple/family is different, but I see how the tabloids keep speculating that they’re reconciling, especially given how this has been playing out.

Does anyone else consistently forget that Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher named their baby son Dmitri? The baby is only 11 months old! I keep forgetting that A) Mila had a second baby and B) that they named the baby Dmitri, which doesn?t ?go? with their daughter?s name, Wyatt, at all. Anyway, even though Mila and Ashton have been together for years now, and even though they?re married with two young children, we still don?t see much of them on the red carpet together. To be fair, they don?t completely avoid being photographed together – they don?t make it into a ?thing? like some couples. They just rarely walk carpets together. So this was a rare occasion – they attended the Breakthrough Prize Awards at the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California over the weekend. The awards celebrate the best scientific work of the year, and it?s become an event which many celebrities attend.
Mila wore this Dolce & Gabbana dress to the event, which is the reason why I?m covering this. Does anyone else remember Mila, several years back, when she was killing it on every red carpet? It was around the time she was promoting Black Swan, and her style was pretty amazing throughout that whole tour and awards season. It feels like Ashton and marriage has not been great for her style. Like, I get the idea of this dress, and I?m not opposed to a bustier top with a full-skirted floral bottom. But the reality is that she looks both boobs are wearing tiny little bibs. This would have looked much cuter if the entire thing had been either all-floral or all-black. I hate how this mis-matched/contrasted fabrics look is so ?in? these days.
Something nice: they look very happy together. This was probably their ?date night.?

Transgender rights and issues have come to the forefront very quickly. It actually surprised to me to look back and see how quickly the conversation shifted, seemingly overnight. My cynical side believes that anti-trans bigotry has been on the rise because many of those people realize that attacking gay people is ?out of style? now. In any case, there?s been a rise in anti-trans hate and a rise in trans-issue awareness. Many makeup companies and beauty brands have moved with the times too, hiring prominent transgender women to front campaigns. Rihanna was recently asked if she would ever hire a transgender woman to represent Fenty Beauty, and her response was fascinating:

Man, remember when Benedict Cumberbatch arrived at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards with Sophie Hunter in 2014? It was literally one of our biggest stories of all time. Memories? sigh. Anyway, last night was the annual London Evening Standard Theatre Awards and there were some good people there, and some bad fashion. I was going to make Cate Blanchett the lead here because she?s Cate Blanchett and whatever you think of her, we always enjoy talking about her fashion choices. But then I saw the photos of Keira Knightley. I?m really sorry to everyone, but Keira is more noteworthy because LOOK AT THIS MESS. Keira wore Valentino – she?s a longtime Valentino fan and she often chooses Valentino for her biggest red carpets. And last night, the House of Valentino made her look like she wore her 4-H ribbons on her sleeves. Beyond the ill-advised ribbons, the rest of the dress sucks too – I would love it if Keira stopped wearing neutrals.
Here?s Cate Blanchett in Alexander McQueen Resort 2018. I get that ?it?s McQueen? and that means we?re automatically supposed to find it challenging and enchanting, but this is bad. I actually like/love the top half – that part IS gorgeous and enchanting. But the skirt absolutely ruins it. It looks like a cheap satin dust ruffle got repurposed.
Ruth Negga in Valentino. Beautiful color, and Ruth is a beautiful woman. The best I can say about this is that it looks comfortable. It?s just a high-fashion sack.
Poppy Delevingne in Prada. The feathers sort of save this from looking like a nightgown. But it?s still not great.
Zendaya in ombre Elie Saab Couture. I usually don?t like ombre (in clothing or hair), but I?m digging this. She looks gorgeous.

First of all, let’s all take a moment to let the fact that Britney Spears is 36 sink in. Okay. Now that this sad reality is out of the way, let’s talk about how her beau, 23-year-old fitness model Sam Asghari, helped the singer celebrate at her LA home. Britney and Sam met on her “Slumber Party” video and have been an item for about a year. They seem to be doing well despite their age difference, and haven’t had any qualms about PDA, most recently getting spotted smooching at a Lakers game on Wednesday night.
On Saturday, Britney shared a video of Sam’s sweet(ly immature) birthday tribute. As you hear Sam say, “Happy Birthday, baby,” you can see a small table of birthday cupcakes and a rose petal heart on the floor. Britney noted, “Couldn?t ask for a better way to kick off my birthday.” I might be evil, but I can’t help but think, “Aww, he’s trying…” Of course, my love grinch heart may just be a couple sizes too small, possibly because no one ever did that for me. Sam also shared the clip on his Instagram, gushing “HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY ONE AND ONLY. Thank you for being you, thank you for showing me the true meaning of a beautiful woman and a strong mother, and most of all thank you for being mine. I consider myself the luckiest man on this planet @britneyspears #luckiestmanalive.”
