| Lucy Liu on race-in-Hollywood discussions: 'It's exhausting, to have to explain it' | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Here are some photos of Lucy Liu at Paleyfest two weekends ago, supporting her work on Elementary. I love her on Elementary, and it bums me out that Elementary isn?t more beloved and watched. Like, it?s one of the best shows on television and they handle mature discussions about sexual assault and addiction very well. Lucy and Jonny Lee Miller are also fantastic on it and they have great chemistry together, but not in a sexual will-they-get-together sort of way. Anyway, at Paleyfest, Lucy was asked about what it?s like to be such a prominent Asian-American woman in Hollywood. Some of her comments:
What she thinks about Hollywood whitewashing: ?That obviously is a hot topic. It?s hard because often times I?m asked not how I feel or how I pride myself as an artist but how I feel as an Asian artist ? there?s always some sort of a hangman before the actual thing. That disturbs me a bit. It?s never about the art itself, it?s about the adjective. I?m playing the main act of what?s happening.?
She?s uncomfortable receiving acclaim specifically for being Asian-American: ?When you?re asked to go a festival and it?s Asian-American, or it?s an award, it?s specific to ?that.? Because I?m ?that.? It?s difficult to swallow.?
Being invited to join the Academy: ?It was just a big honor. Then, with all that?s been going on, they sent a letter out, basically saying they wanted members to then open up and send a list of people that were ethnic in diversity. I had this moment of, I was just thinking about it. I was just so glad I was accepted into this wonderful group because of my work, not because I am Asian, and now they?re trolling the fields for people who fit that. I want to be acknowledged for my work, not for my ?fill in the blank.??
The frustration about having to discuss her race: ?It?s exhausting, to have to explain it. Is it difficult? Absolutely. There?s less to have, and there?s more to do, in order to get that less. It?s hard because it?s rare that I?ll be asked a question that is not with that before it. I always have this hyphen, even if it?s a great periodical ? sorry to sound so geeky ? if it?s a great something that people really respect and admire, they still will ask that as opposed to ?How does it feel to be an actress in the business?? It?s never that. ?How does it feel to be an Asian person in the business?? I don?t know. I don?t know what it is to be ?Asian? because I am a person. I?m a human being. I don?t look in the mirror, honestly, and say, ?Oh, before I say something, I better remember that I am Asian.? The whole joke is, like, when you go to China, you don?t order Chinese food, you?re just ordering the f–king food. So, yes, it?s not easy. I want to get the job. I want to get the thought or the acceptance because of my work, not because I have a hyphen before my name.?
[From NY Magazine]
This reminded me so strongly of what Mindy Kaling has always said, and I?m paraphrasing but it?s basically like: if you?re a woman of color in the industry, you have to talk endlessly about what it?s like to be a woman of color in the industry and all of the white guys get to talk about their art. Lucy wants to talk about her art. She wants to talk about the show. She wants to talk about what she does an actress, not as an Asian-American woman. But women of color do feel the responsibility so much of the time to actually champion their racial cause because? well, let?s face it, women of color are NOT being given a seat at the table for the most part, and being able to say ?Mindy Kaling? and ?Lucy Liu? and ?Viola Davis? actually changes perceptions around which actresses are even considered for roles.

| Scarlett Johansson's vanity side-project is a gourmet popcorn shop in Paris | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

CB and I rarely fight but when we do, it?s about popcorn. She likes sriracha popcorn and she called my fixation on super-buttery popcorn an ?abomination.? Personally, I think sriracha popcorn sounds like a culinary abortion, but whatever. The reason CB and I were fighting about popcorn this week is because we got a strange promotional email about Scarlett Johansson and her French husband Romain Dauriac. ScarJo and Romain split their time between Paris, New York and LA (presumably). Apparently, ScarJo and Romain have some kind of vanity side-project that involves? popcorn. Gourmet popcorn. Per the press release:
It was announced today that Scarlett Johansson and her husband Romain Dauriac to open their flagship gourmet popcorn shop named Yummy Pop in the heart of the Parisian district of the Marais. This will be their first foray as a family in creating and establishing Yummy Pop as a viable international business venture. The Parisian Yummy Pop store will have a soft opening on Saturday, October 22nd with its doors opening at 11:00 am. There will be a Grand Opening at a later date, to be announced soon.
?It has been a dream of mine and my family for several years to bring our favorite American snack to our favorite European City!? states Scarlett. ?I am so excited to introduce Yummy Pop, a labor of love and Epicurean enthusiasm. My hope is for Yummy Pop to become a Parisian snacking staple and a symbol of friendship between my two most beloved cities, Paris and New York,? elaborates Scarlett.
The favors will change with the seasons, as fresh ingredients become available, vibrant and are in abundance. Some of the popcorn flavors will remain as staples/classics. The current (and future flavors) were created in collaboration with Chef Will Horowitz of Ducks Eater & Harry and Ida?s in New York City. The initial flavors offered are:
Sea Salt and Olive Oil
Real Vermont Cheddar ? Romain?s favorite
Real Vermont Maple ? Rose?s favorite
Strawberries and Cream?Romain?s little sister favorite, manager of Yummy Pop
Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Truffle Parmesan and Sage ? Scarlett?s favorite
Can we all possibly agree that cheddar popcorn is the true abomination? WTF? Granted, my palate isn?t super-sophisticated (my favorite foods are ?Caesar salads? and ?fried chicken?) but seriously? these are the flavors? There?s no standard ?butter popcorn?? WTF is chocolate-covered strawberry popcorn??? How are they not offering a kettle-corn option either? Kettle corn is the best.
Should I even say anything about how random it is that ScarJo?s vanity project is opening up a popcorn store in Paris? Random thy name is ScarJo. It sounds sort of like Scarlett is funding this to financially support some of Romain?s family. Hm?
PS? CB wanted me to include her recipe for sriracha popcorn. You take cup of kernels, place in a paper lunch bag and microwave it for one minute and thirty seconds. Then add olive oil and sriracha.
PPS? that time when Scarlett wore a nightgown to a luncheon.

| Ivanka Trump: It's offensive & sexist to call me Donald Trump's 'surrogate wife' | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |
|
|
|
|
|
Ivanka Trump was profiled by the business magazine Fast Company, and the interview is? not good. It?s not that Ivanka says anything particularly bad, but that?s just it. Her father is an unhinged gaffe-machine and the personification of every vitriolic internet conspiracy, and Ivanka is the glossy, Stepford-Daughter-face of that. She?s normalizing his behavior and his words every time she treats her father as somehow legitimate. I don?t blame Ivanka for her father?s deplorableness but I do blame her for her part in promoting and normalizing him, I guess. You can read the full Fast Company piece here. The bulk of the interview took place before the p-ssy tape was released. Some highlights:
Her reaction to the p-ssy tape: “My father’s comments were clearly inappropriate and offensive and I’m glad that he acknowledged this fact with an immediate apology to my family and the American people.?
When she?s referred to as her father?s “surrogate wife?: “Which is deeply offensive. I feel that that’s a very sexist thing to say.”
She offers eight weeks of paid maternity leave at her company: “I do control my own business practices and that?s why I?ve chosen to offer an industry-leading eight weeks of paid leave, but obviously I can?t control the practices of everyone in the universe I do business with.”
She doesn?t like being called her father?s ?advisor?: “I am a daughter and an executive who has worked alongside him.?
Her father?s support within the white supremacist community: “In terms of what you just mentioned. I categorically reject any people within a community that espouses hatred toward anyone, and my father does and has as well, so this is not support that I would be comfortable with. And I couldn?t be comfortable with my father as president of this country if I thought that he could be comfortable with that type of support, and I know that he is not, that?s why he?s denounced it.”
Ivanka isn?t interested in being part of a Trump Administration: “No, I don’t intend to be part of the government.?
[From Fast Company]
I give props to Fast Company because if you read the full piece, you?ll see that they actually fact-check her on several issues involving her own business dealings and public statements, like how many lies she?s told around the issue of maternity leave. The big headline that the political sites are using is that Ivanka doesn?t want to work in a Trump Administration, which? sure, okay. If Trump did win the presidency (OMG) he would want Ivanka there though. To me, the biggest headline was Ivanka being ?deeply offended? at the ?sexism? of being referred to as her father?s surrogate wife. Like, THAT is what you think is sexist? Your dad has been sexually harassing and assaulting women for decades but no one should ? correctly ? refer to you as a ?surrogate wife??

| Selma Blair forgives herself for her 'total psychotic blackout' on a plane | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Back in June of this year, Selma Blair was involved in a really disturbing incident on a plane traveling from Mexico to LA. She had been on vacation with her former partner and their son, and she apparently took a pill and mixed it with some alcohol and she had some kind of breakdown and blackout. She was taken off the plane and treated, and a day later she issued a public apology and an explanation. She sounded truly horrified by what she had done and said. Selma appeared on The Talk this week and she was asked about the situation from June. Her explanation sounds solid, although? I don?t know. I?ll let you judge for yourselves.
Selma Blair is opening up about her plane incident that made front-page headlines earlier this summer. During an appearance on The Talk Wednesday afternoon, the actress shed some light on what really happened as she flew from Mexico to Los Angeles.
“I am someone who should never drink and I rarely do and I don’t drink anymore, but I did. I was going through something. I had a glass of wine, someone gave me a pill that I thought was something that I had taken before, which I don’t take on a regular basis. It was something completely different. It was a very bad choice and I had a total psychotic blackout. It was horrible and frightening and I had empathy for myself actually afterwards because actually it was so out of character for me, especially now that I am a mother.”
Contrary to reports, Selma told viewers Wednesday afternoon that she was taken to a clinic instead of the hospital where she was given an IV and an assessment. She was able to go home two hours later.
“My son was with his father and he had slept through it. I knew he was going to sleep. He had headphones on and that’s why I took this pill…bad choice all around,” Selma admitted. “Totally own it, it will not happen again.”
If the actress is offered a glass of alcohol today, she will politely decline. And if you keep asking, she has one joke ready to go: “Google me.”
“I keep it alive in me with me every day,” she shared with Sharon Osbourne, Aisha Tyler and the rest of the co-hosts. “I forgive myself, but I keep it alive like things can go really wrong and humiliating.”
[From E! News]
The thing about the incident was that she was the biggest threat to herself and no one else ? unlucky so many entitled jackasses, she wasn?t threatening anyone or trying to hurt anyone. I believe she really did have a blackout and she had no idea what she was saying or doing. That being said, it?s still shady that she just took someone else?s pill and threw back some liquor. She?s apologized and she?s talked about the shame she feels, but she?s so quick to say that she?s ?forgiven? herself. Like, is that the most important thing? Are we all supposed to say, ?Oh, it?s fine then, she?s forgiven herself!?

| Kim Kardashian will celebrate her 36th birthday quietly with some new jewelry | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Kim Kardashian was and is the celebrity that people love to hate. And not surprisingly, she?s not interested in playing that game anymore. Kim has been very quiet since the Paris robbery on October 3, and it?s looking more and more like Kim is going to be quiet for a while. Sources told People Magazine this week that Kim ?is still having a difficult time? and that ?she has zero desire to resume her old life.? She?s cancelled her upcoming public appearances and she?s been spending most of her time in her house, with her children. Kanye is still on tour, but in between gigs, he flies home to see her. She?s also nervous about being photographed, which makes sense to me because I believe that the robbers were able to track her because of the paparazzi documenting her comings and goings, and there were also some reports that one of the robbers had even posed as a paparazzo to track her.
It seems pretty clear that Kim is legitimately traumatized and she?s still dealing with the aftermath of the shock. Apparently, her family is being incredibly supportive and much of Kim?s business interests and reality show appearances have been left hanging. I suspect that by the end of the year, we?ll be seeing more of her, but for now, she?s doing what she needs to do. Meaning, her birthday is October 21and Kanye has already canceled the big party he had organized:
An extravagant party organised in honour of Kim Kardashian?s 36th birthday has reportedly been cancelled by concerned husband Kanye West amid fears for her security following her terrifying multi-million dollar robbery in Paris. The American TV personality will celebrate her birthday on October 21, but sources claim the party has been significantly downscaled and will be a subdued affair following the ordeal, during which thieves escaped with an estimated 8.5 million in jewels after posing as police officers and breaking into her rented apartment in the French capital.
But while Kanye, 39, has reportedly moved to cancel plans for a lavish celebration, the rapper has sought to ensure her big day is still memorable by buying her a pair of ruby drop earrings from designer Lorraine Schwartz, understood to be worth $50,000.
?Kanye is devastated he has to cancel ? but his family?s security come first,? a source told The Sun Online. ?He had gone all out for Kim?s birthday and it was going to be all expenses spared with champagne and canaps. Now they will do something low key instead. He?s made sure he will still spoil her with the stunning one of a kind earrings though ? as he doesn?t cut corners when it comes to his missus.?
[From The Daily Mail]
Just as well, because the Kardashians have already done flapper-themed parties before! Go with something original! As for the party cancelation? yeah, that sounds about right. Kim probably won?t even want the earrings too ? allegedly, she doesn?t want Kanye to replace the diamond ring that was stolen, and I do wonder if she?s going to really cut back on wearing jewelry in public now.

| People: Jennifer Lawrence & Darren Aronofsky are 'casually dating' after all | Added 8 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

I do enjoy it when my belief in low-tier tabloid reports pay off. Months ago, In Touch Weekly reported that Jennifer Lawrence was spending a lot of time with her director Darren Aronofsky. People were like ?Don?t believe it!? Then this week, The Sun reported something similar, that Aronofsky and J-Law have been keeping their sh-t on the downlow but yes, they?ve been quietly dating for a while now. Folks were still like ?I?m going to need to see some receipts.? Well now even People Magazine is confirming the news: 26-year-old J-Law is banging 47-year-old Darren Aronofsky!
Jennifer Lawrence has a new man in her life. The Hunger Games actress is dating director Darren Aronofsky, a source close to Lawrence tells PEOPLE.
?They?ve been hanging out and are casually dating,? says the Lawrence pal.
Over the summer, Lawrence, 26, and Aronofsky, 47, collaborated on a still-untitled project together starring the Oscar-winning actress, Ed Harris and Javier Bardem. They were also photographed together in August enjoying lunch at a cafe.
Currently in post-production, the movie is directed and written by Aronofsky and focuses on a couple whose relationship is disrupted when unwanted guests enter their lives.
[From People]
My question is: how long has this been going on? The tabloids have been murmuring about it since March, which was before Darren and Jennifer even started working together on the film (but she was cast in the film at that point, it?s just that the film was in preproduction). Did they start up during filming? Before filming? After filming? And seriously? this pairing is so random. She really does not have a type, does she? To go from Nicholas Hoult to Chris Martin to Darren Aronofsky??? Who will she date next, Elon Musk?
Also: someone creeped on Jennifer and Darren two months ago and got this photo. So I?m pretty sure that this has been happening since this summer.
