Julia Stiles is only 38 years old. The way she doesn?t really ?fit? into so many Hollywood casting decisions, you would think that she was older than that, right? But no she?s not even 40. She?s been working consistently for 20 years, with a break to get her college degree and various breaks when the work simply wasn?t there for her. Nothing really ?happened? to Julia, that?s my point. She was just sort of shuffled off to indie films and character work and TV work (she currently has a starring role on Riviera). Julia knows that her career has been a bit strange too. She?s currently in Hustlers, playing the journalist who interviews all of the strippers after their scam. She chatted with the Daily Beast about her career and Hustlers and how she finally feels like she can make sense of her career:
She campaigned for a role in Hustlers: ?They were like, you might really like this but the part?s not that flashy because you?re not playing a dancerI spoke to [the director] and I was like, I don?t care if I have to sweep the floors. I?ll do anything to be part of this movie.?
She is playing the journalist interviewing the hustlers: ?They could have made five different versions of this story. It could have been Striptease. It could have been Showgirls. It could?ve been a true crime story demonizing these women, focusing on the aftermath of what happened to the men they drugged. But Lorene focuses on the sisterhood and the partnership between these women, trying to get us to understand why these women did what they did.?
Her career at the age of 38: ?If you had talked to me two or three years ago, I might have been more nervous or more frustrated, but I?m really, really happy where I am now? I felt like I was sort of jumping from job to job that I wasn?t really connected to, and worried about where my career was going. I think a few years ago my frustration was feeling like nobody knew what to do with me. You know, I had had some success in my twenties and now I?m in a different place in my life and I didn?t really fit anywhere?But a movie like Hustlers to me is such an affirmation that like I have a place in the film industry and stories that I?m interested in are being told.?
On 10 Things I Hate About You?s 20th anniversary: ?I don?t take it for granted that people are talking about the movie 20 years later. It?s an affirmation that even back then the things, the stories, and the roles that I was drawn to, other people were interested in as well. That was the first time I really read a female character, especially as a teenager, who was feisty and opinionated and unapologetic.?
Going to Columbia University just when her career was heating up: ?It happened to me before I could really understand what was going on,? she says. Going to college helped her keep her head on straight. ?Academic professionals don?t really give a sh-t about me being in a movie or having to go the MTV Movie Awards. But then also people in the entertainment industry don?t really care about university. That helped me a lot.?

As I read this, it sort of struck me that we?re always talking about ?second chances? and ?who gets to come back? after scandal or crime or harassment. And Julia didn?t do anything to anybody, she did nothing wrong at all, she just? had, like, a decade in the career wilderness because directors didnt know what to do with her. She?s a talented actress she always was. But I totally get how she felt like she didn?t ?fit? anywhere. Anyway, I?m glad she?s ?back? (again, she never left!) and I?m excited to see Hustlers!

Julia Stiles can ACT. She never quite made it big despite some starring roles in the late 90s/early 2000s but I think that?s her choice. A lot of people know her from Ten Things I Hate About You but I think of her as Nicky in the Bourne movies, she was so good in those. Julia doesn?t want all the trappings of celebrity and I get the impression she knows all about the drawbacks that come along with that. Shes promoting season two of her Sky Atlantic show Riviera, which is streaming now. She did a ?25 Things You Don?t Know? interview with US and it was so down-to-earth and nice! I really like her.
1. I don?t like having too much stuff, because I travel so much. But I do have a lot of hand-woven baskets to keep clutter in place.
4. I have no regrets, only lessons.
5. The place I escape to when I need to clear my mind is a yoga studio or the beach.
6. I don?t have a guilty pleasure. Nothing pleasurable should make you feel guilty. (At least not until the next morning!)
7. My biggest splurge ever was a piano.
16. I wish I had a remote control for time.
17. The biggest misconception about me is that I live in some sort of bubble.
18. If I weren?t an actress, I?d be a journalist or work in a vineyard.
24. My secret obsession is watching concert and vintage music videos on YouTube.

Could you go without a car? I couldnt where I live now, in the country, but when I lived in a city outside NY it would have been possible. I used to take public transportation a lot and Ive only driven in New York City twice. (My aunt, who grew up on Long Island, would drive me around NYC like a boss. She never pays for parking either.) Julia of course lives in New York City. Its hard to have a car there and you pay in parking fees what those of us in rural areas pay in rent. Julianne Moore, who also lives in NY, used to have a Mini Cooper, which is smart because its small enough to get in tiny parking spaces.
Ooh and I?ll add another thing you may not know about Julia. She named her baby after Joe Strummer, the late lead singer for The Clash. Her son, Strummer, turns two in October, and she?s been married for a couple of years to a camera assistant named Preston J. Cook. Similar to her career choices, I bet she fell for someone low key because shes dated famous guys and doesn?t want that life. Also Julia is the new Hustlers movie with J.Lo, Cardi B, Lizzo and Constance Wu! I?m pretty sure she plays a lawyer, which Ive gleaned from watching the trailer five times, but I wish she was one of the strippers. That?s out in mid-September, which is a bummer because I was hoping to see it this summer.

Julia Stiles is one of those celebrities who stays so far under the radar that when you see her you realize how much you missed her. It’s not like she ever has a reason to disappear, she just isn’t very self promoting, she does her own thing and comes out rarely. That’s why it’s so nice to hear that Julia, 36, is pregnant with her first child, with fianc Preston J Cook, who works as a cameraman. They got engaged in December of 2015 and are expecting a baby later this year. Julia’s rep confirmed the news after a photo came out of her holding her pregnant bump. (That’s below, she’s shown after a radio interviewer.) Here’s more:
This will be the first child for the couple, who got engaged in December 2015 after meeting on set of the 2015 film Go With Me, where Cook worked as a camera assistant.

I’m so glad to hear that she’s doing TV work in England and wonder if I’ll be able to see that show streaming. (I’m thinking of subscribing to that British TV streaming service, Acorn, as they have such good shows but I already have cable plus premium accounts with Hulu, Netflix and Amazon.) Julia’s rare paparazzi photos are used for clickbait articles on “Celebrities who have normal jobs,” but in fact she’s been working steadily in lesser-known movies and on television. She’s an excellent and underrated actress and I last saw her on the YouTube series, Blue, where she played a high end prostitute. (Unfortunately Blue used to be free but you now have to subscribe. I haven’t seen the latest Jason Bourne movie yet, but it starts streaming on HBO today actually, May 13th, so I’m looking forward to that.)

You don’t need to save the last dance, just save the date, as actress Julia Stiles recently announced her engagement to camera assistant Preston J. Cook. The couple met on the set of Julia’s 2015 release Go with Me (don’t worry, I had to Google it myself), co-starring Ray Liotta, Anthony Hopkins and Lochlyn Munro (my personal favorite “Hey! It’s that guy!” from pretty much every comedy in the 90s.) The couple got engaged on Christmas Eve at a private residence in Isla Grande, Colombia.
The 34-year-old actress showed off her ring in a photo on Instagram on Monday with the caption “Best Christmas Ever!” Side note: someone needs to tell Preston that the first three letters of “manicure” are M-A-N. Just saying.

Julia Stiles almost always goes with a smoky eye and nude lip on the red carpet, but she went a different direction for the premiere of “Makeover” last night in New York — lighter on the liner and lashes, but with a brighter lip and cheek. It’s the perfect look for daytime, particularly if there’s a lot of windows and/or fluorescent lighting where you work. If the pics from last year’s company picnic are any indication, “smoky eye” reads lot like “down-on-her-luck Turkish whore” in direct sunlight.
Get Julia’s classic look with a lightweight moisturizing foundation (one to try: Shiseido’s Dual Balancing Foundation, $38.50) and a dusting of translucent powder (undisputed crowd favorite Laura Mercier setting powder, $32) over a berry-tinted cheek stain (Tarte’s Cheek Stain and Bobbi Brown’s Pot Rouge work for lips as well as cheeks). Finish it off with a neutral Pink lip gloss (Laura Mercier’s Lip Glace in Blush is my fail-safe when I do makeovers — it looks great on just about everyone) and brown rather than black mascara.

Michael C. Hall’s “Dexter” co-star Julia Stiles is denying that she was the impetus behind his and Jennifer Carpenter’s impending divorce. She gave the following huffy statement to TMZ :
“I have absolutely nothing to do with the split between Michael and Jennifer. We are good friends and enjoyed working together. This is a personal matter between them, and we should respect their privacy.
Although I too prefer to keep my private life private, I felt compelled to dispel the rumors I was somehow the cause for this matter.”
Whatever. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — I don’t know why anybody in Hollywood bothers getting married in the first place. You could go to the Kentucky Derby, or you could find an old mule tied to the back of a shed and sit on it every night for forty years. I don’t see how that’s even a choice.

After Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter announced their split late Monday, it took less than 48 hours for a steady stream of rumors to swirl that Michael C. Hall had been carrying on with his leading lady in this past season of Dexter, Julia Stiles. LaineyGossip had a ?blind? about it, claiming that after their story lines had been filmed, they had fallen in love. To make things more complicated, our source told us that while yes, Michael and Jennifer were separated months ago, Jennifer was also carrying on with other men. Anyway, Julia must have thought the ?homewrecker? allegation would probably damage her career and her reputation, because she issued a statement (through her rep) to E! News:
As soon as Dexter costars Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter announced their real-life marriage was over, the rumors began.
The internet was flooded with claims that Hall has been romancing Julia Stiles, who plays his love interest on the hit Showtime series.
So, what’s the real deal? Stiles insists she and Hall are not seeing each other.
“I have absolutely nothing to do with the split between Michael and Jennifer,” Stiles says in a statement released by her rep. “We are good friends and enjoyed working together. This is a personal matter between them, and we should respect their privacy. Hall and Carpenter told Entertainment Weekly early this week that they were divorcing after almost two years of marriage, explaining that they have “been separated for some time.”

Hm? on the face of it, I will believe her, I guess. Even though I think the wording is interesting. I?m nit-picking, I know. But it?s interesting that she says that she ?had absolutely nothing to do with the split between Michael and Jennifer? BUT she doesn?t specifically deny that she and Michael are in a relationship now, or were in a relationship before he and Carpenter announced their split. She?s denying that she was the cause of the split, not that she and Michael are boning. Fascinating. Splitting Hairs: America?s Past-time.

She’s no stranger to the red carpet, and last night (August 17) Julia Stiles was on hand for the Cinema Society screening of “Inglourious Basterds.”
The “Save the Last Dance” hottie looked amazing as she arrived at the SVA Theatre in New York City, sporting a simple sexy white sleeveless dress with gold braided strappy sandals.
And though she’s been laying relatively low as of late, Julia has a new movie called “Cry of the Owl” opening in France tomorrow.
The film is about a troubled young man who retreats from the big city and his ex-wife for the tranquility of a small town. He is drawn into a relationship with a young woman whose boyfriend ends up dead, leaving the new arrival as a suspect.
