Gabrielle Union was an interesting addition to the Emmys last night – she came out as a presenter, and Union noted on her Twitter: ?I’ve been doing TV since 1995. This will be my 1st time going to the Emmys & I’m presenting an award! 22 yrs later. #OvernightSucces.? That sucks that this was the first time she?s ever gone to the Emmys or been invited to present. Jesus. So for her big Emmy coming-out, Gabrielle wore this Zuhair Murad which reads to me as sort of goth and dark-romance. I like it, even though it feels a tad too ?heavy? for a September awards show. If I could change one thing, I would have made her take off the necklace – that adds too much ?weight? to the look. Her date was her husband, Dwayne Wade.
Anna Faris wore Marc Jacobs and didn?t walk the Emmys red carpet. I think she was there mostly because the Emmys aired on CBS, and her show is on CBS, so promotion or whatever. Allison Janney seemed very protective of her and I just got the vibe that Anna didn?t want to be there, post-separation from Chris Pratt. The dress sort of reflects that – a boring dress that she?s not connected to at all. It?s probably something her stylist picked out.

Evan Rachel Wood has been making a big deal about wearing pants on the red carpet for the past year or so. She acts as if she?s making some huge statement about society and gender and role models for little girls, which might be the case? except that I think ERW would be wearing suits regardless of her political motivations. I think she just loves wearing suits. And why wouldn?t she? She looks amazing in tuxedos and suits. These are photos of ERW at the 2017 Emmys, where she was nominated for Westworld. She wore this white Moschino (by Jeremy Scott) tuxedo and looked like the second coming of Marlene Dietrich. This was honestly one of my favorite looks of the night.
I always think that Evan is going to end up looking so much like Robin Wright – they?ve playing mother-and-daughter before, and they really do seem like they?re

This post is devoted to some of my least favorite gowns at the 2017 Emmys. Shockingly, there weren?t that many dresses where I was like ?OH HONEY NO.? I actually think the Emmys needed more of those WTF-moments, like someone turning up in a ballerina costume or a swan costume. Why not? Those moments are fun. Instead, we get the normal, everyday fugness of high-end designers trying to be avant-garde and failing miserably. Do you know how difficult it is to make Priyanka Chopra look bad? She?s a beautiful woman with a great figure. So of course Balmain made her look like she was wearing a reworked quilt. This fabric is ACTUALLY QUILTED. And then beaded on top of that. NO. Stop it. This is Bad Fashion. Priyanka also had bad, too-harsh makeup too. And don?t even speak to me about the feathers.
Ellie Kemper wore Jenny Packham, a British designer I usually enjoy. It?s not that I think Ellie?s dress is SO bad, it?s just that? of all the Packham dresses she could have chosen, she picked this one? Why? And why is the effect so boring? I also think the navy ?lining? should have gone all the way down.
Allison Janney in Tony Ward. Bridal mess! The thing is, I don?t hate the lace on the skirt, I just think the top half of the gown sucks so hard, it throws the whole look off.
I don?t think Felicity Huffman ever gets it right – I like her, I admire her work, I think she?s incredibly talented, but she never really pulls it off with her fashion. This is Tony Ward too and it looks like a dip-dyed wedding dress (and a cheap one at that).

I took partial credit for Jessica Biel last night. When I only saw her from the waist up, I felt a sense of relief that she wasn?t hiding behind those g–damn bangs she?s had for several years. Her bangs were arguably THE WORST bangs in Hollywood. They were too long, too thick, too unflattering to her face. So I felt like, well, my work here is done. At least she no longer has bangs. But I guess I have to give her a few more pointers. For one, this Ralph & Russo is bad and she needs a cleaner silhouette. Two, even though your bangs are no longer around (and that?s a good thing), you need to figure out a better hairstyle than ?Grand Ole Opry circa 1982.?
Tatiana Maslany in a very simple, flattering and pretty Reem Acra. Nice, although I would have loved to see her mix it up just a little bit more. I get the feeling that she?s not much of a fashion person though. She was with her longtime lover Tom Cullen.
Leslie Jones in Christian Siriano. I love her and I feel her struggles about finding something that flatters her figure and her height. Siriano often makes special gowns for Leslie and they seem to have a great relationship. This is not the best, but I?ll give her a pass.
Padma Lakshmi also wore Christian Siriano. Like, this isn?t bad, but it?s not good either. It reminds me of something Eva Longoria would wear to these events – hasn?t Eva worn 20 million versions of this dress to various events over the years? And at this point, I just don?t give a sh-t about taffeta.

I will admit that when I first saw Emmy Rossum last night I thought she was wearing Carolina Herrera, as Herrera designed her wedding gown. This looks like Herrera in that it’s a classic strapless red carpet gown in a solid color. It’s Zac Posen though and I guess you can tell by the draping along the waist along with the slightly oval neckline. From far away, on screen, this gown looked like so many we’ve seen before but when you look at the details it’s lovely. Those lines of sequins are impressive close up and, coupled with Emmy’s styling and emerald accessories, the entire look is perfection. Emmy was there with her husband, Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail. This year their respective shows were only nominated in two categories so I’m glad that they still came. Emmy was a presenter.
Sarah Hyland was also in Zac Posen and this illustrated just how hit and miss his designs can be. This cutout orange-red tight number had a leaf pattern and just looked cheap to me. This is an MTV VMAs dress, not an Emmys gown. I like her new reddish haircolor and her styling is pretty, she just needs a more formal gown for this event. Something nice – the skirt isn’t bad, I just didn’t notice it during the red carpet coverage and got distracted by the cutout on her torso.
Susan Sarandon brought her Bernie Bro realness to the Emmys in navy Zac Posen with a frayed off the shoulder neckline. I can admire the work that went into this. Look at how perfectly the fabric is pieced along the bodice and down the sleeves, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that done with sleeves, but I just don’t like her. Her styling is somewhat boring. Sarandon was nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series or Movie, for Bette and Joan, which went to Nicole Kidman.
Vanessa Bayer of Saturday Night Live was nominated for her first Emmy, for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Kate McKinnon took home that category, with SNL winning in several other major categories like Best Directing in a Comedy, Variety Sketch Series and Supporting Actor as well. (Chappelle and Melissa McCarthy won for best male and female guests in a comedy. I’m pretty sure they didn’t show that and just mentioned it when they hilariously presented together.) She had on a strapless floral gown which stood out in that almost no other actresses were in a floral print. The print was a little busy, but it’s still lovely and she elevated it by looking so happy to be there.
