| Angelina Jolie: Women are 'nurturing by nature, community-building by nature' | Added 4 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Angelina Jolie took part in another Zoom call about important issues. She?s been doing this throughout the lockdown, doing Zoom calls with charities and Zooming on behalf of Time Magazine (where she has a columnist gig). This week, she Zoomed with former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, in a conversation moderated by (sad clown noise) Mika Brzezinski. It was for the National Democratic Institute, and they spoke about women in power, women and girls understanding their political and social power and more:
During a discussion with former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright moderated by Mika Brzezinski for the National Democratic Institute, Jolie said that there are many societal factors holding women back. During a portion of the conversation shared by NDI on Twitter Wednesday, Albright said a profound result of empowering women around that world is women that are able to make a political difference by running for office and being part of the decision-making mechanism.
Brzezinski added that its amazing to see what can happen when women are told of their value ? something that inspired Jolie to chime in.
Women contribute so much, they are giving, are nurturing by nature, are community-building by nature, are strong, are intelligent, and yet what is it thats holding us back? the actress, 45, said. I think when you speak of value, thats something to really sit with. Why is it that so many women still dont know their own value? What is it thats been done to us, whether it be the rapes and the lack of accountability for the rape, whether it be domestic violence, whether it be this question where we still, we still are saying, Please stop hurting me, and Please hold someone to account if they hurt me.
[From People]
A minor quibble, but I loathe the stereotype that women are ?nurturing? by nature. I do feel like there are completely fair generalizations to be made about women being natural community-builders, and women being just as intelligent, strong and capable as men. Completely fair. But I think ?nurturing? is more of a societal norm, a gendered expectation that we teach girls, that we show girls that they have to care, to nurture, to empathize and we don?t teach boys the same thing. Im sure some will disagree! It?s an interesting debate to have and I enjoy the fact that Angelina and Maddy Albright are doing it.

| Kim Kardashian is 'concerned, worried' about Kanye, but she's not leaving LA | Added 4 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Like nearly every Kanye West story, the backstory on his bipolar disorder is lengthy, contradictory and backed up by endless interviews and quotes. I won?t even attempt to recap, but People Magazine did a good one here. It is established by his words and actions that Kanye has been suffering with his bipolar disorder for several years. Personally, I would guess that his drinking and drug use in his 20s was probably an early attempt to self-medicate. Over the past five years especially, he just goes through very manic periods and they almost always play out in public, through Kanye?s social media, or Kanye giving interviews and making bizarre, outlandish claims, or what about the time that he seemed to be in some kind of ranting fugue state in the Oval Office?
Anyway, in recent weeks, Kanye has been going through another manic phase. We all knew that as soon as he announced his presidential candidacy via tweet, and then we were sure about it when he gave that God-awful interview to Forbes. Then TMZ got a tip (likely from a Kardashian) that Kanye was in fact ?in the throes of a serious bipolar episode.? As it turns out, People Magazine got a similar exclusive:
Kanye Wests announcement about his intention to run for president has come amid a new cycle in the rappers struggle with his bipolar disorder, a source tells PEOPLE.
Kanye has been doing well for a long time. In the past, he has suffered both manic and depressive episodes

| Ben Affleck & Ana de Armas haven't been photographed together since the WaPo story | Added 4 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

On the Fourth of July, The Washington Posts Emily Yahr published an article in their Pop Culture section calling Ben Affleck and Ana De Armas the pandemic?s only tabloid celebrities. Since that article came out nearly a week ago, WaPo has had only three stories in that category and theyre more general entertainment news like Quibis failure and the fact that it took forever for classic Black sitcoms to go to streaming. The article had a positive spin, saying Ben and Ana are fun to watch and are a nice distraction. We know Ben pays attention to stories about him and it had to have stung that he was being slightly ribbed by WaPo.
We last saw Ben and Ana together looking at homes for sale in Venice on July 3rd. They used to get photographed walking their dogs together at least every other day for weeks. Since that article came out, and its been almost a week, Ben has only been photographed once, alone, walking his dog. That was in Venice yesterday so we know he was visiting Ana. So what happened? Did the WaPo article make Ben and/or Ana realize the optics? Did they make the decision to stop doing paparazzi photo ops and whose idea was that? They were getting on my nerves, but at the same time I miss them. It was fun to see Ana laughing at Ben like he was the funniest guy ever. I liked seeing her ridiculous outfits. She needs to wear a mask more, but that goes against her whole objective at being photographed. We may have Chris Evans and Lily James now, but theyre not going to fill that void.
Theres a whole side story we havent covered about Anas fan account, Ana De Armas Updates, getting blocked and then re-added by the official Knives Out twitter. The Knives out Twitter account has since unblocked Ana De Armas Updates and gave them some never-before-seen behind the scenes photos of Ana as a show of good faith. Paper Magazine has an interview with AJ, who runs Ana De Armas updates, and the Knives Out Twitter team that explains everything.
Ana herself of course blocked Ana De Armas updates after they wrote a funny and benign caption about her walk with Ben on Easter. She hasnt unblocked them yet.
It's just weird that Ben Affleck and Ana De Armas haven't done a pap stroll since that WaPo article came out calling them out. pic.twitter.com/XNhfrCyOxs

| Gabrielle Union talks being 'a guinea pig' for hair & makeup artists untrained for BIPOC | Added 4 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Gabrielle Union is no stranger to standing up and speaking strength to power. Last year she was the fresh face of diversity on AGT, but was subsequently fired after speaking out about the racism and sexism on set.
After seeing this tweet from Hair Love creator, Matthew Cherry, she is now using her platform to elevate another conversation, the lack of diversity in the hair and makeup team on sets.
One of these days we?re gonna have a conversation about how a lot of these progressive TV casting choices aren?t also being reflected behind the scenes in the Hair, Make up and Styling departments as well. One day tho.
? Matthew A. Cherry (@MatthewACherry) July 8, 2020
This is not a new conversation. There have been actresses complaining about how the all-white makeup and hair teams at fashion shows and on TV and movie sets are ill-equipped to assist BIPOC actresses and how they are made to feel like guinea pigs for unqualified staff.
When you are forced to allow unqualified ppl to just let them TRYYYY like why do I have to be the guinea pig? I love when productions say, we want you to look like you did in this pic and I say Well then you will need to hire a Black stylist ????? https://t.co/nUl4KLHSx4
? Gabrielle Union (@itsgabrielleu) July 9, 2020
When her tweet went viral, other black or dark-skinned actresses chimed in with their thoughts and experiences. South African actress Lesley-Ann Brandt who is of South Indian descent, from the series Lucifer had this to say:
This!! The amount of times I?ve had to do my own makeup or bring my own makeup to set. So to producers and creators, ensure you?re following ALL the way through, hair and makeup depts should be diverse. And let?s face it. Black hair stylists can do anyone?s hair. https://t.co/RoHNoR5miS
? ?Lesley-Ann Brandt (@LesleyAnnBrandt) July 9, 2020
Aside from the defensiveness, some stylists flat out refuse to do the makeup or hair of BIPOC. Actress Candice Patton from CWs The Flash states that when BIPOC actresses ask for more qualified people, they are labeled difficult or a diva.
let?s talk about that!! #hearcandicepatton pic.twitter.com/tKrETdQwMO
? ? (@ungodlyiris) July 9, 2020
Many of these actresses are forced to hire their own hair and makeup team on their own dime and this is outrageous. The fact that this issue is not just confined to actresses, but remains an issue at fashion shows and shoots is also problematic. Its not ok to hire black models or actresses to be used as props for diversity, but that diversity must be reflected in the rest of the crew, starting with hair and makeup.
Most hair and makeup schools do not train students how to do black hair and makeup which is ludicrous. This is why many white stylists are not equipped to handle these situations. It is not an excuse for their incompetence though because most black hairstylists and makeup artists I know make it a point to learn and know how to do all hair types and skin tones. Matthew Cherry echoed this when he quoted my tweet about how production companies refuse to hire BIPOC to be the heads of hair and makeup on sets. Im now Twitter famous, yall.
Black hair and make up artists usually have to know how to work with ALL DIFFERENT SKIN AND HAIR TYPES unlike the people that typically end up as department heads. https://t.co/PF2ZybTvqg
? Matthew A. Cherry (@MatthewACherry) July 9, 2020
As a former makeup artist for Mac Cosmetics, I always made it a point to make the white MUAs I worked with learn how to do makeup for black and brown skin. Whenever I was called to do make up for a black woman by a terrified white co-worker, I would make them do the work while gently guiding them. Id tell them, I had to learn, so do you. I always carried at least 20 different foundation colors in my kit in small containers and I taught myself how to mix colors in order to create whatever I needed.
To be unqualified or refusing to learn in this day and age is unacceptable.I hope these actresses continue to speak up while the movie industry not only listens but remedy the issue. These actresses deserve it.
