Here is Britney Spears making an epic return to the MTV Video Music Awards at NYC?s Madison Square Garden, and slayed with a sexy performance of ?Make Me?? (the first single from her ninth studio album, Glory) with a little help from G-Eazy.
Flaunting her insanely fit frame in a glittering yellow, skin-baring bodysuit, the undisputed Princess of Pop wowed the celeb-packed crowd with a lively rendition of her new tune as she joined her dancers to execute some killer choreography.

On a night when it felt like everything was about Beyonce, and only a little bit about Rihanna, is was cute to see other celebrities try to get attention at the 2016 VMAs. I had forgotten that Alicia Keys has been doing the ?makeup free on the red carpet? thing. Some people think Alicia?s makeup-less face was/is brave. Some think it?s just blah. She?s a beautiful woman and I don?t wear makeup either, but ?not wearing makeup? doesn?t make me morally superior to anyone. It just means I?m lazy. And even I would have probably swiped on a little lipstick for the VMAs, no judgment. (Some people also believe Alicia?s wearing concealer and some light makeup anyway!)
Alicia?s ensemble was Just Cavalli. It seemed kind of bulky for a late-summer awards show, especially when most people were just wearing jumpsuits and simple cocktail dresses. Something nice: the red & black fabric is pretty.
Alicia?s real moment came on stage when she was supposed to be introducing an act, but she took a moment to turn the VMAs into a Slam Poetry Jam. Sunday was the 53rd anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?s ?I Have A Dream? speech, so Alicia decided to perform some poetry of her own:
It?s not that she?s annoying, but people this earnest do tend to make me feel uncomfortable. Especially when I know so much about how she got together with her husband. It?s like hearing slam poetry/off-key warbling from LeAnn Rimes.

Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande attended last night?s VMAs to perform together ? they did Ariana?s song ?Side to Side,? and if you paid me to explain/say the lyrics, I wouldn?t be able to. Ariana could have been singing about her janky ponytail for all I know. I?m going to piss off Ariana by focusing on Nicki at the top: Nicki wore this sexy, half-sheer Bao Tranchi gown to the VMAs, and she was easily one of sexiest and prettiest women there. I?ve been enjoying Minaj?s ?sophisticated? makeover so much the past few years. Minaj?s date was her boyfriend/fianc Meek Mill. So many photographers just cut Meek out of the photos, that?s all I?ll say.
As for Ariana?my God, everything about her was annoying last night. Her pre-show interview was done completely to the left side, she tailored her performance so she could sing only on her left side, and how long is she going to do this? Girl, your left side isn?t that much better! You have a complex about this. Her red carpet outfit was Alexander Wang and it didn?t even fit (it was too big), and she changed into lingerie/pajamas for her performance. As for the performance?
It was so stupid, right? It was so stupid that #SoulCycle started trending on Twitter. The idea of making SoulCycle the theme of a performance is? unique. And dumb. And there was a vault there too. Like, a gymnastics vault, on which Ariana climbed and writhed. What was the point? The point, for me, was that I was a little bit embarrassed for Minaj.

Last night was supposed to be Britney Spears’ big VMAs comeback. She’s been to the VMAs since her much-talked about 2007 performance, in 2011 she picked up the MJ Video Vanguard Award, but she hasn’t performed. This was her chance to shine and there were ads for her using photos from her 2001 snake-accessorized “Slave for U” performance. However I didn’t hear anyone on the red carpet mention Britney when they were asked who they were most looking forward to seeing. In the MTV livestream and preshow people said the performances they were anticipating were Rihanna, Beyonce of course, and whatever it was Kanye was going to do for four minutes.
Britney performed “Make Me” and “Me, Myself and I” with G-Eazy, who just reminded me so much of K-Fed when he was getting interviewed on the red carpet. As Kaiser said to me, it was a disservice to Britney to put her on after Beyonce broke the VMAs. Rihanna makes it fun and brings a party atmosphere, Beyonce amazes us with her larger-than-life performances and Britney entertains us while she’s on and is largely forgotten afterwards. Don’t get me wrong, Britney did a good job, I just didn’t come away from this thinking “comeback,” more like “good for Britney.” Here’s her performance:

The 2016 VMAs were all about Beyonce. People acted surprised about that fact. First of all, I thought it was established a while back that she would be performing, but people were ?surprised? that it was confirmed just hours before the show. Second of all, Beyonce left Jay-Z at home. Which makes me laugh, especially since she performed all of the ?he cheated? songs off of Lemonade. Beyonce did roll up to the VMAs with Blue Ivy and the Mothers of the Movement, which was incredible. Her red carpet outfit was Francesco Scognamiglio Couture. Boss. But the red carpet look was just a precursor for the performance.
So much was made of MTV giving Kanye West four minutes to say whatever he wanted. But MTV gave Beyonce 16 minutes in the middle of their show just so she could perform a half dozen songs from Lemonade. It was incredible. And of course Beyonce killed it. She murdered the VMAs.
