I haven?t been an Alicia Keys fan in years, really. I remember all too well the shadiness in which she ended up with Swizz Beatz. While Alicia is not responsible for Swizz cheating on his wife Mashonda, she is responsible for how she whitewashed their relationship in the press, and for what she did to Mashonda, and what she did to Swizz?s side chicks long-term. I find it hard to reconcile Alicia?s wholesome, makeup-free earth mother image with the sleazy reality. So, no. I?m not a fan. Well, Alicia is putting out a new album, probably sometime soon. Everything is very hush-hush (like she?s Beyonce or something) and Alicia is quietly introducing new material at ?private shows? in New York and LA. This is why she covers TimeOut New York: to talk about the new album and more. The ?more? in this case is politics, The Voice, makeup and violence against communities of color. Some highlights:
Why she?s made her first album in four years: ?It all started with uncensoring myself. We allow ourselves to become censored because we don?t want to offend people. We?ll be whoever everyone wants us to be. I didn?t want to be that anymore. This was the first time I created music with such intention. Coupled with the fire that?s in the world is the inescapable fire in myself.?
Taking the role on The Voice: ?To be the first black woman coach?a producer, a writer, an arranger and the crafts maker of my career?sharing that experience with people who want this is one of the most fun things I?ve ever done.?
The battle to be heard: ?It?s an imperative time to be loud. We?re not going to be silenced. All of us are battling wars: sexism, ageism, racism. We?re fighting the war of borders. We?re fighting a war as women. As a black woman raising black sons, I?m seeing so much systemic racism exploding in our faces. These days you have to be afraid to be killed just because you?re black! It?s devastating. Outrageous statements are made out of fear and hate. The intolerance is not acceptable. It?s ancient and patriarchal. The way to propel our country forward is not by building walls. Anyone that thinks that is out of their mind.?
Why she?s going makeup free: ?I promise you I had no idea that it would be such a touchstone. I was just sharing this revelation: I realized I?d been covering up in so many ways. What if I don?t want to put on makeup, heels, get all dressed up?? She talks about standards of beauty imposed on us all from a young age. ?We?re trying to break out of our inherited stereotypes and misinformation. It?s screwing us all up. I?m trying to work on loving myself the best that I can.?

Something nice: I like that her message is one of inclusion, that she wants to fight against sexism, ageism AND racism (as opposed to ?or?). And if she wants to get more political with her music, so be it. Perhaps the Beyonce comparison is apt ? after years of apolitical pop music, Beyonce has gone majorly political in the past few years, and her contemporaries have taken note. I hope Alicia?s new album is actual music and not just uncomfortable slam poetry though.
As for Alicia becoming the bare-face of the makeup-free revolution… if that’s her thing, so be it. I’ve said before that I don’t wear makeup either, but it’s not a political statement for me, it’s just laziness (plus I have oily skin). I did want to share this link to what Chimamanda Ngoziadichie says about makeup, femininity and power though, just to play devil’s advocate.

Dior?s show at Paris Fashion Week is one the hottest tickets of any fashion week in any city. Models, fashionistas and celebrities rearrange their schedules just to be available for the Dior show, and all of the faces of Dior are likely contractually obligated to show up at a few shows a year. Which is how Jennifer Lawrence ? who has been undercover for MONTHS ? deigned to appear at the Dior show on Friday. And when I say ?deigned,? I mean? she looks completely over this. She didn?t want to be in Paris for the Dior show at all. I can see it on her face. And I don?t know if Dior chose Jennifer?s outfit or what, but Dior?s golden girl definitely got the worst ensemble. That might be why she?s so glum-looking too. ?Oh, jean capris? Really? Okay, I guess? since I?m contractually obligated.?
And to think, I actually had high hopes for Dior?s new creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, who took over from Raf Simons this year. Simons was doing terrible things with the label. But judging from these clothes? um, Chiuri isn?t doing much better.
More photos from the show? Rihanna has a gift for making the stupidest clothes look amazing. This is one of those times. This dress would look like an absurd, ill-fitting costume on nearly anyone else. On Rihanna, it looks chic.
I?ve seen so many fashion sites acting like Marion Cotillard?s white sweater/dress is the second coming of Jesus. Really? It?s a pretty unflattering design. Granted, she?s pregnant and I bet this is really comfortable.
Karlie Kloss in one of the best skirts to come out of Dior in a long time.
Kate Moss is doing something different, right? I think she?s going for a more beachy blonde, whereas before she was more of a ?bronde.? The jean jacket is? eh.
Diane Kruger looks like she just came from Lollapalooza. In 1995.
And finally, Natalie Portman was there too. Like Marion, she?s knocked up. Something in the water over there at Dior, maybe.

Big Bang Theory star and relationship addict Kaley Cuoco finally showed off her boyfriend, equestrian Karl Cook, outside of social media! The couple, who have reportedly been an item since March, showed up hand in hand at the Longines Masters Gala in Los Angeles on Thursday night. Kaley was in a Mary Katrantzou maxi dress and Karl was in a three piece light blue suit and a jaunty hat.
The 30-year-old actress gave props to her hair and makeup team in a post on Instagram, stating she was “Shocked that my girls actually did an OK job tonight.” Not credited, her stylist, who shouldn’t with that dress. There’s just way too much going on there. And don’t get me started on Karl’s ensemble. I don’t know if the hat’s too big or what, but he looks kind of odd. It’s probably that hat.

A few years back, LeAnn Rimes was having consistent health problems. It seemed like any time LeAnn had any kind of gig, she would end up canceling it last-minute, claiming she had some kind of virus, or dental emergency, or something else. What was funny about it was that almost always, just a day or two after LeAnn canceled something, she inevitably posted lots of bikini pics from her beach vacation. It really did seem like her ?illnesses? were used an excuse for LeAnn to strut around in bikinis. People got wise to LeAnn pretty quickly, and some of us hoped she?d learned her lesson, the lesson being ?you?re not that popular anymore so don?t alienate the few fans you have left.? Well, guess what? LeAnn canceled a weekend concert at the last minute. She posted on Twitter:
Fans and Friends, I am incredibly disappointed not to be with you this weekend. I have been struggling with severe TMJ and have injured my bone and jaw. It’s left me unable to sing at this moment. I have been put on rest in order to recover. I am truly sorry for this horrible timing, but I am happy to say we have new dates set for the shows. We’ll be in Angola, IN Nov. 5th and Carmel, IN Nov. 18th. Thank you for the understanding and see very soon. I appreciate you all. LeAnn

TMJ is temporomandibular joint syndrome, which is one of LeAnn?s frequent excuses for canceling concerts and appearances. TMJ is a real thing affecting thousands, if not millions of people. TMJ is also the excuse LeAnn gives for her constant dental work. Since I?m not a doctor or an oral surgeon, I?m not going to speak to the validity of LeAnn?s claims. I will say that I think there?s a pretty good chance that LeAnn just wanted to spend the weekend at the beach OR Eddie was threatening to go on a ?boys? only? vacation and she had to stay home and throw a tantrum. We?ll probably never know!

As every gossip and fashion blog has been documenting in the past week, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West arrived in Paris for Fashion Week last week. This is an annual thing for them, regardless of whether Kanye is on tour (which he is, currently). They always go to the spring and fall Paris Fashion Weeks every year. Paparazzi trail them constantly, especially when they?re in Europe, and basically anyone could trace where they are at any given time, where they?re staying, and what jewelry Kim has with her. When I say ?basically anyone,? usually that means fans and paps. But in Paris last night, that meant armed robbers.
Armed gunmen broke into Kim Kardashian’s Paris hotel room, taped her mouth shut and stole millions of dollars in jewelry and the emergency rippled quickly all the way to New York … where Kanye bolted from the stage mid-concert. There were 5 gunmen, posing as cops, who threatened the concierge and made him open the door to her room.
Our Kardashian sources say at least 2 gunman bound and gagged Kim with handcuffs and tape and then put her in the bathtub. We’re told Kim begged them to spare her life, telling them she had babies at home.
The gunmen knew exactly what they were doing … we’re told they beelined it for her jewelry and took a $4.5 million ring and a jewelry box. After the gunmen left she was able to break out of the restraints and called for help.
We’re told Kim was badly shaken but unharmed, calling it “the worst moment in my life.”
As for Kanye … he was performing at the Meadows Festival in Queens, NY — Yeezy was jamming in the middle of “Heartless” when he cut the music and made the announcement, stunning the crowd.

People Mag confirms that the armed assault and armed robbery took place at the No Address Hotel, and Kim?s children were not in the hotel room (or even at the same hotel?). Someone must have run on stage to tell Kanye what had happened because he really did leave mid-set, and most people assume he flew immediately to Paris to be with Kim. People Mag also says that the jewelry stolen from Kim is worth approximately $10 million, and I?m assuming the $4.5 million ring might be the relatively new diamond ring Kanye bought his wife a few months ago which she?s been showing off on social media, although the price tag at the time was reportedly $10 million (but who knows?). Surely Kim insures all of her jewelry?
Anyway, this is awful. I feel so sorry for Kim. If she insures her jewelry ? how could she not? ? then the financial loss won?t be anything significant. But the psychological trauma is probably extreme ? I mean, they tied her up, forced her into the bathtub and she was begging for her life. All because some douchebags wanted her jewelry. It?s horrendous.
