Many people tout the healing power of yoga and meditation. Last year Kerry Washington hosted a yoga and meditation session on her Instagram account. Vanessa Hudgens credits her Zoom meditation class for bringing her and her new hot bae together. Now, Alicia Keys is waxing poetic about the calming affects of meditation. Alicia says that she got into meditation after having her son Egypt ten years ago. A friend noticed Alicias emotional fatigue and invited her to a weekend kundalini yoga and meditation treat. Alicia started meditating consistently after her youngest, Genesis, was born six years ago. She said it changed her life and helped her become a better parent, partner, and friend. Below are a few more highlights from her op-ed in USA Today via People:
The Grammy winner ? who is also mom to 10-year-old son Egypt Daoud ? began meditating after a friend suggested that she attend a Kundalini yoga and meditation retreat, though her foray into mindfulness admittedly had a bumpy start.
Between the chanting and the singing and the rhythm and the meaning of these ancient words, I discovered a sense of peace and comfort. I started to notice a richer connection with myself, an ability to go deeper, she continued. After years of silence I could hear myself, trust my instincts, know what I wanted, know what I needed and not feel so insecure.
Once you make that kind of deep connection with yourself, your relationship with everything and everyone around you changes. As Id hoped, I became a better mother because I was more confident in myself, Keys explained.
I could hear what I needed and what my family needed. Same with my relationships with my husband, my mother and definitely my work, the musician wrote. Now I could be crystal clear, powerful and strong and not back down because I had a way to access my own intuition.
I believe the Divine Feminine is an extremely powerful force within all of us. It has characteristics that we associate with mothering: it helps you grow, it helps you create, it cultivates who you are, wrote Keys, who is partnering with Deepak Chopra for a 21-day meditation experience titled Activating the Divine Feminine: The Path to Wholeness.
I like to get up at first light and take a little time to tune everyone else out, tap into the Divine Feminine and hear myself. Usually I can find it in nature, in my children, in my travel or in my work, but in order to be my best its essential for me to take the time, make the space and listen to the voice that I tuned out for so long, she added. I didnt realize that voice ? the one that speaks to intuition, empathy, compassion, peace ? is also the spirit of the Divine Feminine.

If you have been following my stories, youll know I am a big advocate for radical love and self care. As a meditative yoga instructor I love watching stressed people actually relax when they go on the mat. I agree with Alicia, meditation and in my case and yoga, really helped me with my trauma and centering my mind. It was the reason I went to Shri Kali Ashram in 2019. I needed a tool to help me connect to myself in a deeper way because I wanted to be a better person. I also understood that my trauma was stored in my body and I needed a way to access it. I haven?t been an Alicia Keys fan in years, really. I remember all too well the shadiness in which she ended up with Swizz Beatz. While Alicia is not responsible for Swizz cheating on his wife Mashonda, she is responsible for how she whitewashed their relationship in the press, and for what she did to Mashonda, and what she did to Swizz?s side chicks long-term. I find it hard to reconcile Alicia?s wholesome, makeup-free earth mother image with the sleazy reality. So, no. I?m not a fan. Well, Alicia is putting out a new album, probably sometime soon. Everything is very hush-hush (like she?s Beyonce or something) and Alicia is quietly introducing new material at ?private shows? in New York and LA. This is why she covers TimeOut New York: to talk about the new album and more. The ?more? in this case is politics, The Voice, makeup and violence against communities of color. Some highlights:
Why she?s made her first album in four years: ?It all started with uncensoring myself. We allow ourselves to become censored because we don?t want to offend people. We?ll be whoever everyone wants us to be. I didn?t want to be that anymore. This was the first time I created music with such intention. Coupled with the fire that?s in the world is the inescapable fire in myself.?
Taking the role on The Voice: ?To be the first black woman coach?a producer, a writer, an arranger and the crafts maker of my career?sharing that experience with people who want this is one of the most fun things I?ve ever done.?
The battle to be heard: ?It?s an imperative time to be loud. We?re not going to be silenced. All of us are battling wars: sexism, ageism, racism. We?re fighting the war of borders. We?re fighting a war as women. As a black woman raising black sons, I?m seeing so much systemic racism exploding in our faces. These days you have to be afraid to be killed just because you?re black! It?s devastating. Outrageous statements are made out of fear and hate. The intolerance is not acceptable. It?s ancient and patriarchal. The way to propel our country forward is not by building walls. Anyone that thinks that is out of their mind.?
Why she?s going makeup free: ?I promise you I had no idea that it would be such a touchstone. I was just sharing this revelation: I realized I?d been covering up in so many ways. What if I don?t want to put on makeup, heels, get all dressed up?? She talks about standards of beauty imposed on us all from a young age. ?We?re trying to break out of our inherited stereotypes and misinformation. It?s screwing us all up. I?m trying to work on loving myself the best that I can.?

Something nice: I like that her message is one of inclusion, that she wants to fight against sexism, ageism AND racism (as opposed to ?or?). And if she wants to get more political with her music, so be it. Perhaps the Beyonce comparison is apt ? after years of apolitical pop music, Beyonce has gone majorly political in the past few years, and her contemporaries have taken note. I hope Alicia?s new album is actual music and not just uncomfortable slam poetry though.
As for Alicia becoming the bare-face of the makeup-free revolution… if that’s her thing, so be it. I’ve said before that I don’t wear makeup either, but it’s not a political statement for me, it’s just laziness (plus I have oily skin). I did want to share this link to what Chimamanda Ngoziadichie says about makeup, femininity and power though, just to play devil’s advocate.

One of the funniest parts of Miley Cyrus’s stoned Elle interview was the shade she threw on Alicia Keys, also a judge on The Voice, for having a makeup artist when she insists on going makeup free. Miley said that she does her own makeup but “Alicia doesn?t really wear it. But she?s got a makeup artist and I don?t.” Then Miley made a bunch of excuses for why she does wear makeup and it made about as much sense as the rest of Miley’s interview.
Alicia has been going without makeup for some months now and while it seemed like a put-on at first she’s committed to it and she’s said that she’s not anti-makeup in general. This is just a choice that she’s making. In a new interview with Access Hollywood, Alicia talked about going makeup-free and described it as a kind of challenge to herself, although I think she was making a broader point. You can see the video on Access Hollywood and here’s what she said:
Gwyneth Paltrow just posted a photo on her birthday like ?no makeup, holler at me now? I just wonder if you expected that kind of response when you made the choice for yourself?
No. I didn?t even really think about it to be honest. I was just realizing, just like I was saying, this evolution of even realizing how I could just be. You can just emanate. Here?s me. And learning that is like a constant challenge. Every day I?m challenging myself like ?come on Alicia, don?t forget.?

I like this, I think it’s a nice point to make as long as it’s framed as a personal choice, which Alicia has done, and not as a challenge to all women. It’s also worth looking at how you present yourself and what your personal choices are regarding that, and how to be your most authentic self. For Alicia, that means not wearing makeup.
Alicia is promoting the music she wrote for the Disney movie Queen of Katwe, about a young Ugandan girl who becomes a chess master, starring Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo. She also has an interview with E! in which she talked about her sons with husband Swizz Beats, Egypt, six, and Genesis, one and a half. Alicia said that she’s trying to help protect their innocence. “I love them to just be able to be innocent… to create their world and what the world looks like for them.” She has such a unique way of looking at things.

On a night when it felt like everything was about Beyonce, and only a little bit about Rihanna, is was cute to see other celebrities try to get attention at the 2016 VMAs. I had forgotten that Alicia Keys has been doing the ?makeup free on the red carpet? thing. Some people think Alicia?s makeup-less face was/is brave. Some think it?s just blah. She?s a beautiful woman and I don?t wear makeup either, but ?not wearing makeup? doesn?t make me morally superior to anyone. It just means I?m lazy. And even I would have probably swiped on a little lipstick for the VMAs, no judgment. (Some people also believe Alicia?s wearing concealer and some light makeup anyway!)
Alicia?s ensemble was Just Cavalli. It seemed kind of bulky for a late-summer awards show, especially when most people were just wearing jumpsuits and simple cocktail dresses. Something nice: the red & black fabric is pretty.
Alicia?s real moment came on stage when she was supposed to be introducing an act, but she took a moment to turn the VMAs into a Slam Poetry Jam. Sunday was the 53rd anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?s ?I Have A Dream? speech, so Alicia decided to perform some poetry of her own:
It?s not that she?s annoying, but people this earnest do tend to make me feel uncomfortable. Especially when I know so much about how she got together with her husband. It?s like hearing slam poetry/off-key warbling from LeAnn Rimes.

It?s difficult to remember just how screwed up Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz?s relationship was in the beginning. So let me recap ? Swizz was married to Mashonda, and he was screwing around on Mashonda with multiple women. He has at least four baby-mamas. And his affair with Alicia destroyed his marriage to Mashonda, and Mashonda openly called out Alicia for it. For her part, Alicia has always denied Mashonda?s take on the situation, and since Alicia is more famous in the industry, the industry helped whitewash her relationship with Swizz. I often compared the Alicia-Swizz thing to LeAnn and Eddie ? it?s that kind of trashy, messy affair.
But three years ago, Alicia gave birth to her first child with Swizz. Their son, Egypt, was like Swizz?s fourth or fifth (sixth?) kid overall. And since the birth of Egypt, Swizz really has been keeping a lower profile. Or maybe his game has just gotten tighter and more undercover. You never know. In any case, they?re expecting their second child together:
Aww! Alicia Keys and husband Swizz Beatz are expecting their second child together — and the singer made the announcement via Instagram on Thursday, July 31, with the cutest picture of her bump. The Grammy winning musician, who is already mom to 3-year-old Egypt, shared the adorable picture of herself, 33, and her husband, 35, cradling her blossoming belly, as they celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary.
“Happy Anniversary to the love of my life @therealswizzz!!” the “Empire State of Mind” singer wrote. “And to make it even sweeter we’ve been blessed with another angel on the way!! You make me happier than I have ever known! Here’s to many many more years of the best parts of life!”
Last year Keys admitted her and Beatz’s path to love was not straight forward.
“Honestly, I didn’t really like him that much,” the singer told Marie Claire U.K. “I thought he was too ostentatious.”
But after refusing to work together many times, Keys eventually gave in, and discovered she?d been too quick to judge the handsome music producer.
“I think we’ve taught each other a lot,” she says of her husband who she married on the French island of Corsica in 2010. “He’s taught me to live more fully, and I think I’ve taught him to live more deeply.”

If she?s happy, then good for her. I hope he?s a good husband to her and I hope he?s supporting all of his babies. Fingers crossed this doesn?t end in a terrible scandal where Alicia discovers Swizz has been cheating on her this whole time (except I think that?s totally going to happen at some point).

Stunning in a black and brown leather jacket, the R&B babe sported a tight black top, and a pair of sexy black leggings, smliing as she gave her presentation.
The 33-year-old Grammy-winner attended the event to cut the ceremonial ribbon, as well as to introduce the new interactive storytelling app, "Mookey."
The "Mookey" project releases as the latest extension of Alicia's magical children's property, entitled, "The Journals of Mama Mae & LeeLee."

Looking elegantly beautiful, the "Girl on Fire" songstress sported a navy dress while her main squeeze rocked a fashionable suit and matching fedora.
Speaking of children, Alicia and Swizz are already the proud parents to adorable son Egypt, who is now three-years-old. So are the happy couple looking at expanding their family again?
At a recent press event for for the movie she just produced, ?The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete,? Miss Keys told ABC News, "That?s down the road, definitely down the road.?

Beyond that hilarious meme, have you ever watched any of The History Channel?s awesome series Ancient Aliens? That show will make you a believer. A believer in the idea that aliens came down and wrote the Torah and made a map in a South American desert and helped the Eqyptians build the pyramids and all of it. But what if you believe that aliens are still around? What if you believe that aliens walk among us? Then you and Alicia Keys have something in common. AK: Exactly. It had to be the right vibe. If it was one of those crazy, nutso dudes my brother watches ? he always wants me to watch these movies with him and I?m like, No! ? I wouldn?t go with that one.

It might sound weird, but there are a lot of people who believe in aliens to varying degrees. Some people believe that it?s simply possible that there is another intelligent life form somewhere out there, and maybe they come to visit. Some people believe that aliens are all around. And some of us believe that aliens had something to do with Stonehenge. Alicia isn?t even the first celebrity to talk about her belief in aliens ? Alicia Keys covers the new issue of Marie Claire UK. It?s a lovely shoot ? Alicia?s hair looks good, her face is always beautiful, and her body looks great. Unfortunately, Alicia is still kind of an a?hole. Yes, she sings pretty songs and yes, she gives back to charity. Praise her for that. But do not praise her for the sketchiness that is her relationship/marriage to Swizz Beatz. Swizz Beatz was married to Mashonda Dean when he started fooling around with Alicia. Alicia is the reason Swizz and Mashonda are no longer together. Swizz was also fooling around with other women throughout his marriage to Mashonda, and one woman in particular (Jahna Sebastian) coincided with both his marriage to Mashonda AND his affair with Alicia, and that relationship ended up with the woman having a baby. A baby that Swizz has neither acknowledged nor financially supported.
Throughout her relationship and marriage to Swizz, Alicia has barely answered any questions about the shadiness of this whole mess. Whenever she?s confronted with direct questions ? rarely ? Alicia pushes them off or acts like she?s too important to deign to justify Swizz?s shenanigans. Their marriage and the birth of their son Egypt continued the ?whitewashing of Alicia? in the press, and nowadays whenever the big outlets cover her, they make it sound like Alicia and Swizz are completely in love and he?s such a doting father and you wouldn?t know that he?s got a bunch of other children that he doesn?t support and barely sees.
That?s all backstory because Alicia continues the whitewash in this new Marie Claire interview. She talks about meeting Swizz and what she felt and never once does she reference the shenanigans with Mashonda:
They are one of the music world’s golden couples, supporting each other through their careers and helping to raise two-year-old son Egypt. But it seems that things weren’t always so rosy between Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, as the superstar has admitted that she found him ‘annoying’ when they first met. Speaking to Marie Claire, the 32-year-old opened up about the couple’s long journey to romance, while posing for an ethereal new photo shoot.
‘Honestly, I didn’t really like him that much,’ she said, talking about when she first met the American hip hop artist while they were both teenagers. ‘I though he was ostentatious. He’ll drive the fastest, brightest car, wear the biggest jewellery, the loudest jacket; everything with him is really over the top,’ she admitted.
‘I was like, he is so annoying,’ she said, reminiscing about when she saw him drive past a restaurant in a huge white Rolls-Royce Phantom.
But after years of knowing each other, and not quite managing to work together, the pair found themselves in the studio, and a relationship soon followed.
‘I fought tooth and nail,’ she said, admitting that she originally didn’t want to work with him. ‘Finally though, we did it and we had a ball.’
‘I think we’ve taught each other a lot,’ she said. ‘He’s taught me how to live more fully and I’ve taught him how to live more deeply.’
The singer also admitted that she struggled with the negative attitudes of people close to her during her rise to fame.
‘There might have been people in my life who, now, when I look back, I realise were kind of insulting or abusive – verbally or emotionally – or just not supportive,’ she said.
Speaking about her beloved two-year-old son, the singer says ‘[He] never gets grouchy or grumpy. He has a great disposition.’

I guess we?re supposed to think that it?s cute that Alicia took so long to come around on Swizz, that a good man was right in front of her the whole time or some kind of mindless rom-com trope like that. But I keep coming back to something Mashonda said in an interview: ?We were married. Sleeping in the same bed and having sex every night while he was seeing Alicia. Okay? It was an affair. 100 percent. I don?t know why people want to change that rule so much. We had just had a kid, for crying out loud. Our child was 8 months. I found out about Alicia two days before my son turned 1. They had been doing their thing for months before that.? That?s the time period Alicia is referencing when she casually says that she and Swizz ?had a ball?. Yeah.
