According to relatives of Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, Tom Cruise isn’t man enough to portray the late hero. Stauffenberg’s great nephew claims Cruise just doesn’t have the chops or the stature to convincingly carry the lead in Valykyrie:
Ahead of the film’s release in Germany this week, Franz von Stauffenberg told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper that Cruise failed to capture what inspired people to join forces with his great-uncle Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg.
“Tom Cruise seems terribly cautious, almost as if he were afraid of playing the role. He tries to seem elegant but comes across as extremely stiff,” Mr von Stauffenberg, who has himself acted in minor television roles, said after seeing Valkyrie.
“He seems not at all decisive in the role and above all not charismatic enough. On the whole he just seems too small.”
Cruise plays Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg, a Prussian aristocrat who played a key role in a plot to kill Hitler on July 20, 1944.
Sydney Morning Herald
Stauffenberg would have been quite a strong character to have people support him in a plot to kill their country’s leader, and many have trouble seeing past Tom Cruise’s personality. Maybe if he’d had the confidence to use a German accent the transformation would be more convincing. Tom speaks a few lines of German, before reverting to non-accented English, as does the rest of the cast. Only the baddies speak with German accents. Possibly it would have been best to just use all American or British accents.
Valkyrie is getting reasonable reviews, it currently is rated at 57% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s also doing well at the box office with a respectable $78.2 million domestic total, according to BoxOfficeMojo. Ultimately the opinions of the movie-going public carry much more weight than what the late protagonist’s family thinks.

Out promoting his film Valkyrie in Korea, Tom Cruise told the press that he’s hated Hitler since childhood. FOX News reports:
?I always wanted to kill Hitler, I hated him,? Cruise, 46, said. ?As a child studying history and looking at documents, I wondered, ?why didn?t someone stand up and try to stop it?? When I read the script, it was entertaining and informative to know what the challenges were and what it was like to be in the environment.?
While all the other kids imagined what it’d be like to plow Brooke Shields, Tom dreamed about assassinating Hitler. Sounds like a normal childhood to me. One which could lead to repressed homosexuality and masochistic fantasies involving Adolph and Japanese tentacle rape.

The Tom Cruise Career Comeback is in full force - and it?s working! Xenu loves a comeback, and so does America, apparently. A somewhat contrite Tom Cruise has apologized to glib Matt Lauer, toned down the Scientology speeches, received a Golden Globe nomination for his hilariously crude turn in Tropic Thunder, been in a critically well-received Nazi movie, and perhaps, to look a little ?refreshed? for his comeback, a little nip-tuck? Cruise has been looking mysteriously svelte and ?tight? around the jaw… but I digress.
Most of the biggest films with the biggest box offices make half (if not more) of their money in foreign markets. So it makes perfect sense that a big star like Tom Cruise would take his comeback tour to Seoul, South Korea to promote the hell out of Valkyrie. While in Seoul, Cruise talked about how much he wanted to kill Hitler when he was a child. There are a couple of things about his answers that make me uncomfortable, but I?ll get to that later. Here?s what Xenu approves of.
Tom Cruise, who fails to assassinate Adolph Hitler in his new movie “Valkyrie,” said he grew up really wanting to kill the Nazi leader.
In the World War II thriller based on a true story of the unsuccessful attempt by German soldiers to kill Hitler, Cruise plays Colonel Claus Von Stauffenber who plants a briefcase bomb under a table at Hitler’s military headquarters. A heavy wooden table saves Hitler and Stauffenberg is executed with his co-conspirators.
“I always wanted to kill Hitler, I hated him,” the Hollywood star of such major blockbusters as “Top Gun” and “Mission Impossible,” told the press during a visit to Seoul to promote his latest film.
“As a child studying history and looking at documents, I wondered, why didn’t someone stand up and try to stop it? When I read the script, it was entertaining and informative to know what the challenges were and what it was like to be in the environment.”
Stauffenberg’s legacy helped ease the burden of guilt about World War II and the Holocaust Germans still endure. But Germans had balked at the prospect of Cruise playing Stauffenberg as they objected to the actor’s ties to Scientology, the movement founded in the 1950s by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.
Germany, which does not recognize Scientology as a religion and regards it as a cult, made it difficult for the crew to film in the Bendlerblock building and courtyard where Stauffenberg was shot dead.
“I’ve never heard of this story before… It turned out to be an incredible adventure, just to be there and shoot at these locations that Stauffenberg was. It was a very powerful experience and hopefully it will communicate with the audience,” the actor said. “It has certainly influenced my life, just knowing that there were people who tried to stop him (Hitler).”
From Reuters
I swear I?m not being nit-picky. I totally understand what Tom Cruise is trying to say - something along the lines of ?When I was in school, studying the history of WWII, I never understood why people couldn?t see through Hitler?s crap and try to take him out.? That?s what he should of said. Instead, Cruise sounds like he wants to be a time-traveling Highlander or something. And as far as this repetition of ?hating? Hitler - well, duh. We all hate Hitler, Xenu! It?s not as if Cruise is blowing our minds with profundity. As if he ever is.
Note by Celebitchy: Cruise arrived in Berlin last night, where he will be attending the premiere of Valkyrie on Tuesday.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are back in Berlin while Brad wraps filming on Inglourious Basterds. The famous couple and their six children aren’t staying in the palatial mansion where they first holed up in the German capital. According to German reports, they’re now occupying a 4,000 square foot apartment above the Ritz Carlton Hotel with full hotel services and a separate entrance.
Brad will attend the premiere of his film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button tonight in Berlin at the Sony Center in Potsdamer Platz, near Brad and Angelina’s temporary accommodations. I live in Berlin, and would definitely go to the premiere if I was there, but I’m now on vacation with my family in sunny Florida for the second week. I’m disappointed to be missing the premiere tonight, and to also miss Tom Cruise’s appearance in Berlin on Tuesday for the Valkyrie premiere, but I get to be in America at one of the most exciting times in history. I wouldn’t miss this for anything.
Brad and Angelina were photographed out last night at a restaurant in Berlin, where they were reportedly celebrating the birthday of Angelina’s makeup artist. Angelina was drinking wine last night, just like at the Golden Globes, which definitely makes those pregnancy rumors suspect. I wonder why her makeup artist is in Berlin and if she lives there or is traveling with them.

| Katie Holmes was counting on Tom Cruise to get her a decent role | Added 15 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Tom Cruise is kind of growing on me. I know he’s an unofficial leader and an apologist for Scientology, one of the world’s most dangerous cults, and for that reason I’ll never be a fan. At the same time the guy is very gracious with the public and he seems real about it. I was kind of impressed by him at the Golden Globes, especially the way he listened attentively to his old boss Steven Spielberg’s speech. Maybe he’s trying to convert us all with kindness because he knows he’s the only one who can help. Looking at the header photo, the crazy is still very much with him.
It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on with Tom’s relationship with his “they said it wouldn’t last” third wife, Katie Holmes. Holmes is looking incredibly tired and worn down.
According to Star, which is probably making this up, Katie is disappointed in her husband for not helping her land a decent role though which she can prove she’s star material, and it’s putting a strain on their relationship. Whether that’s the strain that’s showing up on her face or not is up to interpretation:
When Tom Cruise started dating Katie Holmes in 2005, he vowed to make all of her dreams come true, especially the one to become a huge movie star. But now, almost four years later, Katie’s career is in the worst slump of her life - and sources tell Star that Tom is to blame!
“He basically told her he would manage her career and make her a big star,” says one insider. “He said that in five years, she’d be the No. 1 female box-office earner in the world. Tom really believed in Katie and that his connections would mold her into a superstar…
“Katie can’t understand how Tom could run a big movie studio like United Artists and not be able to steer her toward an Oscar-worthy film.”
[From Star Magazine, print edition, January 19, 2008]
This might be something that just occurred to someone at Star, but it’s a good observation. Cruise helms United Artists studio and can presumably use his influence to help “Kate” land a role or even create one for her. So far all she’s done since she married Tom was that awful comedy Mad Money, a cameo on the TV show “Eli Stone,” and a role on Broadway that was presumably her idea. IMDB doesn’t have her listed as attached to any projects in the future.
Cruise is rumored to be on shaky ground with United Artists, which is owned by Cruise and MGM. His partner, Paula Wagner, left UA in August of last year amid rumors that MGM wanted the studio to move in another direction. (They put out Lions for Lambs and Valkyrie, which wasn’t released at that point.) What’s more is that United received a $500 million funding pledge from Merrill Lynch, which was thought to have been in jeopardy after the financial crisis and takeover of Lynch by Bank of America in September. Supposedly the money is secure, but that hardly seems possible.
Now that Valkyrie was a success maybe Tom will have more pull with the bigwigs to help “Kate” get some work. That is, if he wants her to work. He kept calling her “strong willed” during press for Valkyrie and said that he wanted 10 children but mentioned that it was up to her. Maybe he’s setting up the right career-free scenario to change her malleable mind. It’s not like she’s earning roles with her fabulous talent anyway. Holmes’ role on stage wrapped on Sunday night and we’ll have to see if she remains in New York or returns to LA with her husband.

As soon as Katie Holmes finished her final performance of All My Sons in NY, she made a mad dash to be with Tom Cruise at the Golden Globes in Los Angeles. Poor girl made the cross country journey for no reason since Tom Cruise lost out winning Best Supporting Actor for his role in Tropic Thunder. Hopefully Tom let her girls sleep in today because they did so much for him.

The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards was quite the star-studded event, and afterwards Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were reunited at a West Hollywood afterparty, looking so happy together.
The “Valkyrie” stud and his “Mad Money” wife were all smiles as they meandered around, mingling with party guests and looking relieved that Katie’s months-long Broadway run is finally over.

Katie Holmes might have wrapped up All My Sons yesterday, but she isn't ready to say goodbye to Broadway just yet. According OK! she was offered the role of Sylvia Llewelyn Davies in the musical version of Finding Neverland. There is only one snag in the deal, a source says that Tom Cruise wants her in LA and not in NY. Even though she looks exhausted, I think she seems happier in NY and I hope she returns soon. Just because that means we get more pictures of Suri!!!
