I was so surprised when Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy announced they were expecting their third child earlier this week! They already have two sons, Cyrus and Rowan, and I thought they were done having babies. But no, Claire is knocked up again! Congrats to her. Claire turned up at the Golden Globes last night wearing a pretty horrid dress. I?m sure chose it to hide her bump a little, but jeez, it was so bad. This is Giambattista Valli. Usually, Valli designs are heavy on flouncy skirts and architectural looks. This just feels like an off-day, design-wise.
Quinta Brunson wore Christian Siriano Quinta has a commitment to this style, the strapless mermaid design. It flatters her figure, and she?s quite short (which limits the kinds of dresses she?s offered), but I would love to see her play around with some different silhouettes at some point. Anyway, this was fine. I?m sure it was a custom job from Siriano and Quinta seemed to love it.
Sheryl Lee Ralph looked amazing in a custom Aliette. She is having so much fun!!

For a while on the Emmys red carpet, everyone was talking about poor Claire Danes. Like, remember when Claire used to win tons of awards? Remember when we couldn?t wait to see what she was wearing? While no one seems to be watching Homeland anymore, some of us do still care what she?s wearing. And her Emmy look last night was? not great. The Schiaparelli couture gown itself was inoffensive, I guess. I mean, I don?t like the little cleavage-blocker in the center of her chest (and yes, it?s part of her dress), it looks stupid. But the rest of the gown is fine. No, we were talking about Claire because she either has a bad sunburn or she was aggressively fake-tanned. Or both. Like, in some light she looked burned, in some light she looked like she was 10 out of 10 Boehners. It was not good.
In lieu of an actual Beyonce sighting ? Beyonce did not deign to attend, which was a good call because she lost! ? we had to make do with the very fabulous Laverne Cox. Laverne was totally serving up some Beyonce Realness in this gold Naeem Khan gown and big, bouncing hair. I loved this on her and I thought she looked amazing. She presented at the Emmys too, and she said something nice about Jeffrey Tambor and Transparent, saying that trans actors do need more chances and more trans stories need to be told.

My favorite gown at the Met Gala, and the one that I thought best captured the theme, was Claire Danes’ Cinderella style Zac Posen, an impressive gown in its own right which went to the next level by glowing and sparkleingwith the lights off. Many of you said that the theme Manus x Machina (hand and machine) was more than just technology meets design, that it was meant to incorporate both traditional hand design methods, like the intricate feathering on Zoe Saldana’s Dolce & Gabbana, and more modern technology, like the perfectly circular machine-cut grommets on Kate Mara’s dress. I think that’s accurate now that I’ve read through the whole theme description. Although I find that theme too all-encompassing I can now appreciate how more traditional dresses did fit the theme. Some of them still seemed phoned in to me, and I would have liked to see more designs with tech features built in, but I see your point.
Entertainment Weekly has an interview with Posen, who described the technology behind the dress that had everyone talking. It was made with a fibric optic material which transmitted light and had 30 battery packs built in to run it. Next year, I want to see recycled gowns (like Emma Watson’s) with solar-paneled lights. I kid but that would be fun. Plus imagine owning clothes that glow without batteries. As long as it didn’t attract bugs outside I would want that. Here’s more, from EW:
Posen set out to create a gown that highlighted ?the place where technology and fantasy meet.? Made of custom fiber optic woven organza with 30 mini battery packs sewn into a thin organza lining, the result was a haute couture design that reflects his experimental approach to fashion. ?We custom developed the fabrication, because I wanted to create something that had a transparency to it, but an illumination to it.? And though the major glam factor came from the light bright factor, even the smallest details ? like its raw-edged hem ? were considered ahead of the gown?s red carpet debut. ?I think fashion has become something called fashiontainment,? reflects Posen. ?And it?s our job as dreamers and creators to push that.?
That said, the pale blue, princess-style dress required 600 hours of work from Posen and his six-person team, and paid off when social media declared the dress a Cinderella moment. ?It?s always great when something resonates and creates a visceral reaction,? says Posen, who has incorporated tech-inspired designs in previous collections and worked with Google?s Made with Code program.

Everyone was buzzing on Twitter over this illuminated Zac Posen gown. It was unknown at first who would be wearing it and initially the rumor was that Heidi Klum would arrive in this amazing dress. Given Heidi’s tendency to look ridiculous on the red carpet, this kind of effort seemed wasted on her, so thankfully that story was false. Claire Danes showed up in this dress, which perfectly fit the Manus x Machina theme and drew comparisons to Cinderella, at least when the dress was unlit. When lit, all I could think of was Katniss’s flaming gown at the Hunger Games.
Look at the video of this dress. The slightly frayed edges are lines of light which edge the hem, waistline and down the bodice. The skirt and rest of the dress look like a starry night. Zac Posen designed with light and made it a feature of the gown. Zac Posen is Cinna. Claire explained in an interview on the red carpet (that’s below) that she had a stool to sit on during the event because she couldn’t sit in a typical chair. Like Karolina Kurkova in her lit up Marchesa, she rode in a bus to the event as she couldn’t sit down, but this design and execution is superior in every way. It’s amazing.

Claire Danes has a limited edition, graphic designed library card to an exclusive library used only by her Book Club, The Nitwits, and now *I* want a limited edition, graphic designed library card to an exclusive library. And possibly access to her book club, but I?ll need to see their reading list first; they do drink and that is a step in the right direction.
Claire is featured in the The Edit, Net-a-Porter?smagazine. The pictorial is pretty; with a lot of Boho Chic florals, lace and peasant-style (and one seriously fierce grey long coat that she needs to hand over to me when she delivers my library card). The beige, floral-ombre Topshop dress shown below is lovely ? the colors really complement her. Claire is known for early roles like Juliet to Leonardo ?My Bear? DiCaprio?s Romeo and teenager Angela in My So Called Life. For the last five years, of course, Claire has headlined Showtimes? Homeland as CIA agent Carrie Mathison. Her character is bipolar; a trait not often written in to leading characters and its been noted how delicately Claire has handled it. Dealing with challenges through therapy is something Claire has been preparing for almost her whole life:

She appreciated her SoHo upbringing:

She loves being married to husband Hugh Dancy:

Unlike Claire, the list of people I trust and admire and want to make out with is staggering. I hope most of them are flexible on the whole ?partnership? thing because we haven?t met and the restraining orders seem to speak to their reticence to ?partnership.?
Claire being in therapy since she was six intrigues me; that seems pretty young for elective therapy. I can?t imagine a six year-old being prescient enough to know she was going to keep therapist as her back up plan to acting. I get why she stays in therapy, I have nothing but love for therapy and I am glad it helped her to portray Carrie with such sensitivity.
In the rest of the article she talks about her son Cyrus, her feelings about being in a female-led show and her plans to finally finish her townhome. It?s a nice read and the pictures are graceful. I leave it herefor you while I go get one of my progeny to make me a cool library card.

Claire Danes covers the December issue of Allure, and as it turns out, the cover interview is pretty good. I?m okay with Claire these days ? a few years ago, when I was a Homeland superfan, I was definitely more of a Claire fan-girl, but these days I don?t watch Homeland and so I?m sort of over her. Not in a mean way, just in a ?oh, she?s still there? sort of way. One of the things about Claire is that she usually a boring interview. The rare times her interviews do make news, it?s because she?s made some kind of reference to how she ran off with Billy Crudup when he was with then-pregnant Mary Louise Parker. Unfortunately, Claire doesn?t reference that with Allure! Some highlights from the cover story:
Her now-infamous cry-face: ?I?m very vain about my performance. I want to give as honest a performance as I can. But I?m not so worried about being regarded as beautiful when I?m playing a character. I have plenty of vanity in my life. I want to look pretty in the world. But I can be this bottomless pit. I know some of the most beautiful women on the planet ? unequivocally, objectively friggin? gorgeous ? and they are rife with insecurity and self doubt, and you just think, ?Well how can that be?’ I?m attractive enough. I can do the work I want to do. I?ve found a wonderful man who wants to make out with me. I?m good.?
Makeup rules: ?It?s either eyes or lips. It?s like legs or boobs: You shouldn?t do both. That?s always the first question when you sit down to get ready for the night.?
Bodyshaming, body criticism: “It’s just so ingrained in us, the idea that we should take up the right amount of space, literally and figuratively. I’ve wrestled with this my whole life, as just a person in the world and as somebody who makes images. It’s OK to want to look and feel your best. It’s OK to work at being attractive, whatever that means to you. And it’s also OK to not expect to be defined by that. It’s OK to be powerful in every way: to be big, to take up space. To breathe and thrive.”
Her younger self: “I didn?t have many opportunities to chill and waste time. I was working all the time, and I was getting a little cuckoo? I do feel like I’ve gotten younger as I’ve aged. It’s a very young mistake to assume that life is very serious. I get the joke now.”
She gives her son manicures: “I got swag from a pre-Emmy party, and it was a bunch of Essie nail polishes. Cyrus discovered them, so then I started trying to paint Cyrus’s nails… and it was really hard. They’re really small nails. But I suddenly had a new, deep respect for manicurists.”
She?s an obsessive plucker: “Pluck my eyebrows. I love plucking. I’m quite fastidious about that. I get very anxious when there’s a rogue hair.”

I too am an obsessive eyebrow plucker. The bushy eyebrow/Scouse brow trend drives me crazy. Even as I?m sitting here right now, thinking about eyebrows, I can feel my anxiety creep in that I?ve got some rogue hairs going AWOL from the brows. TIGHTEN UP! I also like what she says about body criticism and women feeling that they can?t or shouldn?t take up too much space. And I enjoy the ?eyes or lips? thing. I?ve never really thought about it like that, although I don?t know as much about makeup as CB. When I used to wear makeup, I would choose eyes over lips just as a default.

Once I stopped watching Homeland (last year?), I sort of got out of the groove of covering Claire Danes? interviews. In all honesty, it wasn?t a huge loss for gossip ? Claire?s interviews the past few years have been pretty boring and uneventful, so much so that I actually forgot that she?s lived through a few scandals in her day. Claire appeared on Howard Stern?s SiriusXM show yesterday and Stern brought the vintage gossip and drama. I actually learned some stuff about Claire that I didn?t know before, like she turned down the role of Rose in Titanic. Did you know that? I did not. Stern also made Claire talk about the Billy Crudup drama. Vintage scandal recap: Billy Crudup dumped his then-seven-months-pregnant girlfriend, Mary Louise Parker, for Claire. Claire and Billy were costars and she was just 24 and there was some stuff about how she was a ?homewrecker,? although to be fair? Crudup got most of the sh-t for that, as he should have. Anyway, here are some highlights from the Stern interview:
Being judged by the public for being a homewrecker: “That was a scary thing. That was really hard. I didn?t know how to not do that. I was just in love with him. And needed to explore that and I was 24… I didn?t quite know what those consequences would be. You never know. But it?s O.K. . . . I went through it.?
They dated for four years & there are no hard feelings: “But it?s okay. I went through it. We?re friendly, we?re friends.”
Why she turned down Titanic after doing Romeo + Juliet: “It seemed redundant.?

She also told Stern that she never hooked up with Jared Leto during or after My So Called Life, mostly because he?s seven years older than her (and she was just a teenager during MSCL). As for the Crudup stuff? I understand what she?s saying about how she just didn?t know how to NOT be in love with him. I can even see how a 24-year-old would have some kind of naivet about the sh-tstorm that her affair would bring out. But still? once a dude leaves his seven-months-pregnant partner, that is a HUGE red flag for any relationship, even if you weren?t the ?other woman? (which Claire completely was). And 24 years old is still very young, but that’s plenty old enough to know that you’re going to get a ton of bad press for having an affair with a dude with a pregnant girlfriend. Ugh. It?s still sort of amazing that Claire managed to get her public profile back on track after that.

There were a few women who sort of blended into each other on the Emmys red carpet. Maybe it was because so many ladies were SO BLONDE and so melty from the heat, but I kept confusing Claire Danes for January Jones. Also, it was really funny to me that Claire was the second major actress on the red carpet to have chain details on her dress, and when Ryan Seacrest told her that Taraji Henson had chains too, Claire had a moment, just a flash, where she looked slightly pissed. She thought she was going to be the only one with chains!
Anyway, Claire?s dress was Prada. I?ve gotten to the point where I really, really do not like Prada?s gowns (unless Lupita Nyong?o is wearing them). This dress is sort of a study in how to f?k up a perfectly simple and classic design. If this had just been a simple, sequined slipdress, it would have been lovely and Claire might even be one of my favorites. But the chains just take this to a really fug level. First of all, the chains are GIANT. They?re, like, industrial chains. Second of all? I just hate her hair. It ruins the look. Celebitchy called this ?Republican spouse hair? and she?s right. Also: Hugh Dancy?s haircut is awful.
Here?s Morena Baccarin (who isn?t on Homeland anymore but whatever) in Reem Acra. This is? bad. It looks cheap.
Nazanin Boniadi from Homeland? beautiful girl, horrible dress. She was on the red carpet really early too, and people were like ?WTF?? to this Stephane Rolland boob-drape dress. Why would you do this to a young woman going to the Emmys?!

Claire Danes’s style can be hit or miss. She takes risks often, but they haven’t been paying off as of late. That’s why I’m somewhat impressed with her green Marc Jacobs gown. It has a lot going on; there’s a cutout at the ribs, an industrial-looking wrap belt, a crisscross neckline, and circle appliques along each side. Somehow it all works together, and just looks cool. Her styling is so pretty too. I would lighten up the black eyeliner, but that’s a minor complaint.
Also in green is SAG winner Patricia Arquette, who has been sweeping the Best Supporting Actress category this awards season. I don’t want to jinx it, but I’m looking forward to her Oscars speech. She’s in Vivienne Westwood, who also dressed Sophia Bush. There’s something off about the draping as a whole, but the neckline is lovely. I really noticed the detail on camera. Here’s Patricia’s acceptance speech. She always seems so genuine and I loved what she said about her kids being perfect and how her family has been acting through feast and famine. Patricia lost her mom, Olivia, in 1997, and she ended her speech by saying to her mom “you are my hummingbird you are always with me.” That got me choked up.
Lorelei Linklater is 20 years old. I can’t believe it, but that’s the magic of Boyhood. She’s very goth and cute in an Honor gown with bell sleeves and a lace back. I bet that she had a hand in designing that gown. It looks like several outfits I owned in the early 90s when I was around her age.

I realized the other day that I didn?t know when Homeland?s Season 4 was coming on and I didn?t really care. That?s not a knock on Claire Danes, who I think does a great job with the material she?s given. It?s just that the writers completely screwed up the last two seasons and I?m not sure I?m still invested in these characters. Especially after (SPOILER) there will be no Brody in the Season 4. Maybe if they promise to have Rupert Friend in every episode? Even then, it would have to be Rupert Friend without pants. Anyway, Claire covers the October issue of Harper?s Bazaar UK. You can read the full piece here ? I enjoyed it, but then again, I?m a fan. Some highlights:
Doing Homeland without Damian Lewis: ?I?m going to miss him. A lot of people, even my friends, were saying, ?Is he really dead?? And it?s absurd, but I think there?s a part of me that is also a little unsure. I?ll really start to believe it when we?re filming and he?s not there. That?s going to be hard and sad. I loved working with him and he carried half the weight of the show. So I?m a little bit daunted about what that means for me.?
Motherhood challenges: ?Being a mum is incredibly challenging but we still feel a pressure to talk about it in very romantic terms. And it?s not just that. We all have that resentment at times and anxiety about being trapped by the role, that responsibility. And then chemically it can run riot. Your mental state, the hormonal swings are so extraordinary and singular to the female experience and they haven?t been taken very seriously or considered very deeply… I mean, post-partum aside, even if you have the most healthy relationship with your child and have support and resources, it?s tough. It?s really tough. And there?s no ?off? button. [For me] that was the hardest adjustment. You always feel beholden to somebody… And for so long they?re like koala bears, you just feel a physical responsibility to be there for them to cling to. It?s pretty primal.?
How her ?cry-face? went viral: ?I?m surprised it?s so surprising. I have my guy, who thinks I?m pretty enough in our life together, so I don?t need to be seducing the audience that way. I think it?s also just my style, what I like in creative work, what I?ve always been attracted to, even as a little girl? I liked the ugly even as a kid, and I think that has stayed with me now.?
Staying in Toronto in the winter while Hugh Dancy films Hannibal: ?You?re just house-bound. I had to be strategic about how and when I took the garbage out. I mean, it was intense? I felt totally overwhelmed and displaced and I really didn?t have a sense of the city and was nursing all the time. Away from family and friends, it was quite extreme. Two months in, I accidentally found this mummy/baby yoga class where I met women who became best friends. I guess that?s common, you bond really fast…?
She?s very crafty: ?It got to the point where the crew made a sewing station out of my director?s chair, one arm was a pincushion and I had this special light. It was ridiculous but, you know, delightfully so.?
On loving Hugh Dancy: ?I?m genuinely in love with him. And I like hard things. You know, marriage is hard, but I?m up for it. I don?t do anything casually so dating is not for me. I would be marrying everyone I was with. When I met Hugh I was single for the first time and really looking forward to it, kind of bragging, ?I?m going to rock this.? Then I met Hugh…?

She talks a lot about motherhood and crafting and her childhood too. She even talks about Cyrus, who she says is turning into a ?ham.? Apparently he says ?Ciao? to people and Claire thinks it?s ridiculous and she wants people to know that she did not teach him to say ?Ciao.? He sings to himself and he throws tantrums. He sounds amazing.
As for Hugh? I always say that their body language seems so ?off? whenever they?re on a red carpet, but maybe that?s not the best indicator (LIES!). I didn?t realize that he films Hannibal in Toronto and that she camps out there with him. Maybe their marriage is a lot stronger than I previously thought!
