Not only was the Ashton Kutcher/Katherine Heigl vehicle “Killers” slammed by critics and ignored by audiences, but it was also the death knell for struggling movie studio Lion’s Gate. It’s just one of many Hollywood studios currently struggling, but Lion’s Gate actually issued a statement saying that the movie’s “underperformance” was one of the top reasons they are now operating at a $64 million revenue loss and are fighting off hostile takeover bids. Which begs the question: why is Ashton Kutcher still considered a movie star?
Lionsgate said on Monday that it lost $64.1 million during its fiscal 2011 first quarter, with overall revenue driven down, in part, by a declines in home entertainment revenues — a result of producing fewer theatrical films last year — and higher marketing costs to promote three wide releases.
The studio also attributed the rough quarter to the ?underperformance? of ?Killers? starring Ashton Kutcher.
Overall revenue was $326.6 million for the quarter, a decline of about 14 percent. Its adjusted net loss was $13.7 million, compared to a $53.4 million profit during the same quarter last year.
Liongate?s $64.1 million net loss was ?attributable primarily to an increase of $71.2 million in theatrical marketing costs? for three wide releases — “Killers,” “Kick Ass” and ?Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too?? — in the quarter, compared to just one wide release (?Crank 2: High Voltage?) last year.
The studio?s motion picture revenue — at $272.7 million — was unchanged, and that included the $71.3 million in theatrical revenues generated at the box office.
Lionsgate’s home entertainment revenue — $117.1 million — slid 22 percent on a smaller 2010 (fiscal) slate.
Revenue from Lionsgate-owned Mandate Pictures fell 75 percent to $13.3 million, and the studio attributed to the timing of its slate compared to last year?s fiscal first quarter, which included ?Drag Me to Hell? and ?Juno.?
Lionsgate co-chair and CEO Jon Feltheimer singled out “Killers,” but remained optimistic about the upcoming slate.
“Our first quarter was affected by marketing costs for our three wide releases, timing of television deliveries and the underperformance of our theatrical release ?Killers,?” Feltheimer said in a statement accompanying the release. “With our upcoming theatrical slate, beginning with this Friday’s opening of ?The Expendables,? and the continued strength of our television, library and channel businesses, we remain poised to achieve our full year financial targets.”
The earnings release did not address the latest hostile takeover bid by Carl Icahn and his Icahn group. Last week, Lionsgate?s board rejected Icahn?s offer of $6.50 per share.
Icahn has been aggressively trying to wrangle control of the indie studio for months. His latest lob is set to expire on August 25.

It sounds like the studio had a few movies that underperformed, but that “Killers” was the biggest disappointment. I don’t know why that project got the green light in the first place. When was the last time an Ashton Kutcher movie was successful? I can’t even remember. Did anyone actually see that movie? The previews looked horrible. If any of our readers saw it - please weigh in, how bad was it? Anyway, maybe these studios will be a little more selective on which projects get the green light now that they’re in such dire financial straits.

Hard at work on yet another new project, Katherine Heigl was spotted keeping busy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Thursday (July 15).
The former "Grey's Anatomy" beauty is in the steel city filming the Julie Anne Robinson directed comedic thriller titled "One For The Money."
With Miss Heigl dressed like a Jersey Guidette, she happens to be playing an unemployed lingerie buyer turned bail bondswoman named Stephanie Plum in the novel turned film.
During the course of the day's shoot, Katherine - who reportedly gave up smoking when she adopted her baby - was spotted puffing on what looked to be an electronic cigarette while running through her lines.
Fans of Miss Heigl have a bit of a wait for this one, as "One For the Money" is slated to be released at an undecided date in 2012.

This interview with Katherine Heigl is several days old, and the writer makes a point of saying that it was conducted a few weeks before Katherine?s full promotional push for The Killers began. And ended, because that film did not do well - it?s been out for three weeks, and it hasn?t broken $40 million yet. Ouch. So much for Katherine Heigl being one of the few women who can get a great box office. Anyway, as we and many others have pointed out before, Katherine has a big mouth and a big diva attitude and it gets her into a lot of trouble. The Telegraph points out the latest incident involving Katherine?s insanity and how it negatively affects her career - her publicist fired HER.
Katherine Heigl is trying not to offend anyone. With those brown doe eyes and her rom-com pedigree it might be hard to imagine Heigl uttering anything insulting but, despite her sweet, apple-pie appearance, the 31-year-old actress is not afraid to speak her mind.
So much so that, just two weeks before our meeting, her publicist fired her. Rumor has it that Heigl’s famously loose tongue was to blame. ‘That, I have to say, hurt my feelings,’ Heigl says, sitting on a deep brown leather sofa.
She’s sitting cross-legged with a bottle of water by her side, trying her best to be relaxed. She offers many quick smiles and big, frequent laughs. She is cagey about what exactly prompted her publicist to dump her but, whatever Heigl said or did, it was the latest in a long line of controversial incidents.
‘I’m a talker,’ Heigl begins with a sigh. ‘I love a good debate. But people started thinking of me as a diva. It was a ball that just started rolling. I’m realizing now that I can’t just blurt things out.’
Which is why Heigl has decided to conduct interviews in her house. ‘If I have to be focused and watch what I say, then I have to be comfortable.’

Yes, because that?s the reason she?s such an insufferable diva, right? Location. What is her thought process, seriously? ?Ooh, I?ll do an interview in my home, that way I won?t sound nasty when I bitch about everyone I work with.? And you know what? I remember Katherine?s Vanity Fair interview, the one where she bitched about Knocked Up - she did that interview in her home.

On adopting Naleigh: ‘It felt right to start our family this way,’ says Heigl. ‘I grew up in an adoptive family. My sister was adopted from Korea. So it was something I always knew I would do.’
Katherine had ?no idea what she was in for? when she started working right after the adoption: ?I thought, “I can do this,”‘ she says with a laugh. ‘My mom was going to be there a lot. Josh was going to be back and forth from Nashville, where he was just starting his album, which was just a two-hour drive away. I have a wonderful nanny. No problem. But I ended up having one full-on anxiety attack and I threw my back out twice from stress. People will tell you how hard it is, but you have no idea until you experience it.’
On feeling dowdy: Heigl says that when Josh Duhamel, her co-star in Life As We Know It, and his wife Fergie, the singer, recently came over for a pool party, she felt dowdy and mumsy. ‘Yeah, try sitting next to Fergie in a bikini,’ she says. ‘She had on the cutest little suit, which I actually own. I was so relieved I wasn’t wearing it, too. But as long as I can suck it in and still say my lines at work I’ll be fine.’
Katherine and Josh expect to have both adopted and biological children: ‘A lot of them, not to be too Jolie-Pitt about it’.
Katherine offends professional killers too: ‘I guess they’re perceived as sexy, kind of a stealth human weapon with this dark and glamorous life. In real life, it seems like they’d have to have some kind of chip loose in the brain to kill people professionally. Oh, but there I go again. I guess I’ve offended assassins this time,’ she says. ‘To all of the assassins reading this story, I’m sorry. Please don’t take it personally.’

??As long as I can suck it in and still say my lines at work I’ll be fine.? Well, at least she?s not neurotic about her body or her looks, I do give her credit for that. After overdosing on too many actresses? interviews where they only seem to be able to talk about what diet they?re doing or how much they work out, it is refreshing to hear an actress talk about sucking in her gut. Maybe that?s the problem with Katherine though - she thinks everyone is going to take her words as ?that?s refreshing? even when she?s being an insane diva. There?s a reason professional actors rarely talk sh-t about the people they work with, and it?s not because they fear being ?refreshing.?

Fresh off of the European premiere of her new movie "Killers," Katherine Heigl headed over to C Restaurant (formerly known as Cipriani) in London, England on Wednesday night (June 9).
Joining up with fellow film members, the former "Grey's Anatomy" actress partied the night away before leaving via the fire exit and heading to her hotel for some much needed rest.
As for making her new film, which co-stars Ashton Kutcher, Katherine tells, ?It?s really fun but it?s little bits at a time, so it?s a little bit painstaking for me. I like those dialogue scenes where you?re sort of bantering."
Miss Heigl adds, ?One of my favorite scenes of the movie was the pregnancy test scene because that was just sort of Ashton and I improv-ing. I thought that we were really good at bickering together! The action side of it that requires everything being re-set and put in its place ? so it can take a day or two to do one tiny little thing.?

Looking absolutely fabulous, Katherine Heigl was spotted arriving at the European Film Premiere of ?Killers? in London, England on Wednesday (June 9).
Still rocking her brunette locks, the 31-year-old actress poofed up her 'do a bit while donning a black dress and heels as she happily posed for pictures with the film?s director, Robert Luketic.
Ms Heigl recently made the overseas trip to promote her latest flick (leaving co-star Ashton Kutcher at home) which hits UK theaters on June 16th.
Having been released in the states this past Friday, the movie is about "a vacationing woman who meets her ideal man, leading to a swift marriage. Back at home, however, their idyllic life is upset when they discover their neighbors could be assassins who have been contracted to kill the couple."

One of the first moments most of us had on our multi-year realization that Katherine Heigl is an insufferable diva was a little incident that happened almost two years ago exactly. Dame Heigl released a public statement in June 2008 about how she was withdrawing her name from the Emmy nominations because, in her own words, ?I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention? In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials.? She threw the Grey?s Anatomy writers under the bus, plus she?s so conceited that she insinuated that she would probably win if nominated, and she wanted to deign to give another actress a shot.
After that, a lot of sh-t went down, and Dame Heigl has only reaffirmed (in my mind) her bitchy, holier-than-thou, conceited diva ways. In my opinion, she felt like she was too good to be on Grey?s, and was trying to talk her way into getting fired. It worked, kind of. In the 2009-10 season, Katherine was only in a handful of episodes in the fall, with the idea that she would come back in the spring. She didn?t. But that?s not stopping her from submitting herself for an Emmy!
Though she sat out more than half of the season of Grey?s Anatomy, Katherine Heigl has submitted herself in the supporting actress category for this year?s Emmy race, her representative confirms. There is no set amount of episodes that an actor must appear in to be eligible for either the supporting or lead actor categories.
Heigl only appeared in a handful of episodes this year before her character, Dr. Izzie Stevens, was last seen around Seattle Grace in January. Heigl was due back on the set of the ABC drama March 1 but she never showed up. Heigl told EW that ?rumors that I refused to return were totally untrue.? ABC Studios said it was mutually agreed upon that Heigl would end her run this season.
Nominations for the 62nd Primetime Emmys will be announced July 8. As for the rest of the Grey?s stars, Ellen Pompeo submitted herself as lead actress, while the other ensemble members ? including Patrick Dempsey ? will duke it out in the supporting categories. To vie for the best drama prize, Grey?s submitted the two-hour finale, as well as the episodes ?The Time Warp,? ?Suicide is Painless,? ?I Saw What I Saw,? and ?Give Peace a Chance? for consideration. NBC will air the Emmys on Aug. 29.

Perhaps I?m unfamiliar with the way Emmy campaigns are run (I?m more familiar with Oscar campaigns, honestly), but it was my understanding that it?s the show runners, producers and network/cable company that does the majority of determinations for Emmy nominations and Emmy campaigns, rather than the individual actors and actresses. Granted, I don?t doubt that an actor can wage a one-person campaign, but it seems like the most effective campaigns are going to be with the explicit blessing of, you know, the show, the producers, the other cast members. A lot of money goes into these campaigns, and I doubt ABC and Grey’s producers want to spend money waging a campaign on behalf of Dame Heigl.
Anyway, I hope whoever does the determining of Emmy nominations (a committee? Emmy pre-voters?) hands Heigl her ass on a platter. Oh, and you know how Dame Heigl left Grey?s because she?s a big movie star because she?s focused on being a mom? Well, the movie star stuff isn?t working out quite as she planned. The Killers, her movie with Ashton Kutcher made a paltry $16 million on opening weekend, coming in third. My guess is that it will have something like a 70% drop in the second week.

Making her way overseas, Katherine Heigl was spotted arriving at Heathrow Airport in London, England on Monday (June 7).
The former "Grey's Anatomy" star looked a bit tuckered out from the long transatlantic flight originating in Los Angeles as she made her way through the crowded terminal.
Miss Heigl made the overseas trip to promote her new movie "The Killers," which hits UK theaters on June 16th.

When I first saw these photos of Katherine Heigl at last night?s premiere of The Killers (costarring Ashton Kutcher, who also walked the red carpet), my initial thought was ?hideous?. But actually, it?s not terrible. Personally, I think Katherine looks prettier and younger as a blonde, but for someone with little to no style (like Heigl), she doesn?t look horrible. It?s a very RHONJ look, right? Big, teased hair, big skirt, big tan. Like she?s stepping out of a casting call for Working Girl: The Musical.
Katherine recently spoke to Gala Magazine about her desire to have more kids. Here?s an excerpt from Us Weekly:
Is Katherine Heigl’s 17-month-old daughter, Naleigh, about to become a big sister? “We would love to have a second child, adopted or biological,” Heigl told Germany’s Gala magazine. “We’re not ruling it out.”
Moved by the devastation that occurred in Haiti earlier this year, Heigl hopes to provide a better life for one of the children affected by the earthquake.
“Just look at Haiti. There’s so many parentless children,” she said. “It breaks my heart. I want to help.”
It wouldn’t be the first time Heigl and her husband, Josh Kelley, have adopted from overseas. The Killers actress, 31, adopted Naleigh, a special needs child from South Korea, in 2009. Heigl later revealed that she named her baby after her mother, Nancy, and her sister, Margaret Leigh, who was also adopted from Korea.
“I’m very grateful to be a mom,” Heigl tells UsMagazine.com. “It’s changed my whole perspective in a good way.”
But when Heigl and Kelley do add to their brood, don’t expect the couple’s children to grow up like most Hollywood tots.
“I don’t want [Naleigh] to have a Beemer on her 16th birthday or spend the summer at a beach house with friends,” Heigl said last month. “You want a beach house, you pay for it.”
As for when the adoption might take place, Heigl is still unsure.
“I often plunge into things and hope everything will be alright,” she says, adding that it would be nice to have “a little friend” for her daughter.

I think Katherine probably will adopt again, at some point. I doubt it?s happening any time soon, though. She?s a movie star, after all! God, I hope The Killers crashes and burns at the box office. It looks seriously terrible.
By the way, as I mentioned, Ashton walked the red carpet too - with Demi, who was wearing a beautiful full-length gown in a gorgeous peacock-blue/green. It seems a little too dressy for a premiere, right? Do you think Demi is trying to fashion c-ckblock Katherine? It?s not difficult. Katherine generally looks like she?s getting dressed in the dark.

Stepping out for a promotional appearance, Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl were spotted at the premiere of their new movie ?Killers? last night (June 1).
The ?Punk?d? stud and the ?Grey?s Anatomy? girl both looked to be having a marvelous time as they posed for the paparazzi at the ArcLight Cinemas Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles.
Also in the house was Ashton?s lovely wife, actress Demi Moore, as well as Katherine?s hunky husband, musician Josh Kelly.
?Killers? looks to be a sure fire winner, and is scheduled to hit theaters nationwide this Friday, June 4th.
