Kristen Stewart is currently promoting her directorial debut, The Chronology of Water. She?s been working on this for years, and I?m proud of her for getting it made. Kristen still takes acting roles, but in recent years, she?s diversified her interests and she?s been trying to do more behind the camera. Still, she spent years as a working actress, and she recently pointed out a dirty little secret of Hollywood. Namely, that men have the privilege of ?Method acting? loudly and arrogantly, while women are expected to do their jobs without all of the Method bullsh-t. Kristen analyzed this in a NYT video/podcast. Quotes via Variety:
Kristen Stewart is weighing in on the Method acting debate. ?The Chronology of Water? director recently told the New York Times that acting is by nature ?quite embarrassing and unmasculine,? and that going Method is a way for some male actors to temper the ?inherently vulnerable? side of being a performer.
?Performance is inherently vulnerable and therefore quite embarrassing and unmasculine,? Stewart said. ?There?s no bravado in suggesting that you?re a mouthpiece for someone else?s ideas. It?s inherently submissive. Have you ever heard of a female actor that was method??
The comment was part of a larger conversation about Marlon Brando?s famous mispronunciation of ?Krpton? in 1978?s ?Superman.? The interviewer recalled Sean Penn, who knew Brando, saying it was his way of maintaining integrity while appearing in a ?sellout movie.? Stewart said that men in Hollywood are often ?aggrandized for retaining self? while women don?t get the same treatment.
?Brando sounds like a hero, doesn?t he? If a woman did that, it would be different,? she said. ?If you have to do 50 push-ups before your close-up or refuse to say a word a certain way ? I mean, Brando, [expletive], I?m not coming for him.?
She continued. ?There?s a common act that happens before the acting happens on set: If they can protrude out of the vulnerability and feel like a gorilla pounding their chest before they cry on camera, it?s a little less embarrassing. It also makes it seem like a magic trick, like it is so impossible to do what you?re doing that nobody else could do it.?
Stewart then recalled a conversation that reaffirmed her belief that actresses aren?t given the same liberties when it comes to their craft.
She explained, ?I asked a fellow actor: ?Have you ever met a female actor that was method and needed to scream and do a whole thing?? As soon as I said, ?male actor, female actor,? the reaction was like, ?Do not mention the elephant in the room.? And he goes, ?Oh, actresses are crazy.?
[From Variety]
Her analysis of WHY this happens is interesting, that men feel like their fragile masculinity is being threatened if they don?t act like Method aholes and make their work everyone else?s problem. But it?s been known for years that actresses do not go ?Method? in the way men do. Actresses are always like, ?no, of course I?m not Method, I have to go home and take care of my family? or ?of course not, my kids are on set with me.? You never hear men say any variation of that ?Oh, I can?t really go full Method because I have a life beyond my job and I need to pick up my kids from school.?

There are two more years left in the extremely expensive renovation of Buckingham Palace. The whole reno ordeal was always scheduled to last ten years, but when Queen Elizabeth II was alive, she still regularly stayed in BP and conducted business there in her final years. King Charles averages maybe two or three daytime events a week at BP, but only during certain periods of time. Most of the state business during Charles?s reign is now being conducted at Windsor Castle or Clarence House. Well, it looks like those changes will likely become permanent. They?re going so far as to move the Royal Mews aka the stables over to Windsor.
The royal family is preparing to make another major change. According to the Sunday Times, the Royal Mews will be relocating from Buckingham Palace to Windsor in the new year. The Mews is responsible for the royals transportation, most notably the horses, stables and historic collection of royal carriages.
It has been headquartered at Buckingham Palace since the late 1700s; however, a move out of central London into the Windsor countryside makes sense for a few notable reasons.
For one, Buckingham Palace has not been the primary royal residence since the late Queen Elizabeth moved to Windsor during the COVID pandemic in 2020. The historic building is currently undergoing a six-figure renovation, and King Charles and Queen Camilla have been living at Clarence House when in London, where they reportedly intend to remain even after the work is complete.
Likewise, Kate Middleton and Prince William officially moved into their forever home, Forest Lodge in Windsor, just a few weeks ago. They also plan to keep the country home as their primary residence, even when William eventually becomes king.
So, it makes sense for the Royal Mews to relocate its historic stables and current fleet of around 30 horses, state coaches, as well as the state motor cars. Coachmen, grooms, chauffeurs and other staff also live on site, in apartments near the carriage houses and stables. The Mews is a major part of royal ceremony, with the family traveling by carriage for events like royal weddings, Trooping the Colour, the Royal Ascot, state visits and more. After a few years of running main operations through Windsor instead of Buckingham Palace, it seems the family is ready to make the change permanent.
Even after renovations on the London royal residence are complete, King Charles and Queen Camilla likely wont live there. According to The Times, sources who know Charles and Camilla said they are both ?very comfortable? at Clarence House, which is a short walk from Buckingham Palace. ?I know he is no fan of ?the big house,? as he calls the palace,? a source told the outlet. ?He doesn?t see it as a viable future home or a house that?s fit for purpose in the modern world.?
Another source added, ?It is certainly true that Camilla doesn?t want to live at Buckingham Palace,? and The Times reported that Prince William ?agrees that the palace is not suitable for modern family life.?
[From People]
?Currently undergoing a six-figure renovation?? More like a nine-figure renovation. The whole decade-long process costs 369 million, although a project of this size will most likely not come in on budget. Let?s say they?re spending something close to 400 million on a decade-long project to make Buckingham Palace more habitable, comfortable and modern. And let?s say that no one ever lives there again, not even the horses. You can say, hey, France just spent all of that money fixing Notre Dame, this is similar. Yeah, Notre Dame is a historic building which is fully open to tourists all year. BP is supposed to be the monarch?s home, both symbolically and literally! And now they?re even moving the horses and carriages out of BP? Wild.

Kate Winslet is currently promoting her directorial debut, Goodbye June. It was written by her son Joe, who has adopted the professional name Joe Anders (his birth name is Joe Mendes). I learned something new in this Times interview with Kate apparently, her current husband no longer goes by Ned Rocknroll. He?s back to his birth name, Edward Smith. We?re no longer supposed to call him Ned Rocknroll?? I?m honestly shocked that they?re still together, but there you go. I haven?t covered a Winslet interview in a few years and I always forget how judgmental she is and how much sh-t she talks. You can read the full piece here. Some highlights:
How her parents reacted to her fame: ?Fascinated, proud, confused? It is odd to see your sister on the front of a magazine. But also they were worried, because the media was vile, singling me out for relentless bullying. I wasn?t ready to be a famous actress. I was so young, but I felt so invaded. Nothing was nice. People climbed into my garden. I couldn?t go to a shop. I was followed when I had a baby in the back of the car on my way to the paediatrician. It is abnormal and, to my dad, I was still that little girl he helped clean out the rabbit hutch every Saturday afternoon.?
She wants women to be happy with how they look naturally: ?But I feel like nobody cares any more. No one?s listening because they?ve become obsessed with chasing an idea of perfection to get more likes on Instagram. It upsets me so much.?
How women are all getting so much done, they look the same: ?Oh, it?s terrifying. I think no, not you! Why? It is devastating. If a person?s self-esteem is so bound up in how they look it?s frightening. And it?s puzzling because I have moments when I think it?s better, when I look at actresses at events dressed how they want, whichever shape ? but then so many people are on weight-loss drugs. It?s so varied. Some are making choices to be themselves, others do everything they can to not be themselves. And do they know what they are putting in? The disregard for one?s health is terrifying. It bothers me now more than ever. It is f***ing chaos out there.?
She?s mad about all of the cosmetic work: Yet what really upsets Winslet is not ?all the f***ing actresses? but the rest of the world, ?people who save up for Botox or the sh=t they put in their lips?. She screws up her face, showing me lines to prove that she ?hasn?t got anything in it?. She then squeezes the backs of her hands, making creases around her veins. ?My favourite thing is when your hands get old,? she beams. ?That?s life, in your hands. Some of the most beautiful women I know are over 70 and what upsets me is that young women have no concept of what being beautiful actually is.?
She blames social media: To illustrate her exasperation she mentions a young woman she saw on a BBC news article about a car crash. ?She looked like a cartoon,? Winslet says, sighing. ?You do not actually know what that person looks like ? from the eyebrows to mouth to lashes to hair, that young woman is scared to be herself. What idea of perfection are people aspiring to? I blame social media and its effect on mental health.?
Her love of British culture: ?I love British culture. How in moments of unbelievable tragedy there?s always someone asking if they can have a pint and a packet of pork scratchings.? Football, pubs, sandwiches, ?crappy? hospital sofas, kind doctors ? it flows with the rhythm of this country?s life as it celebrates the ending of a life. I suppose this film is our way of saying, ?Make sure you?ve said everything you need to.? Because this country is useless at dealing with grief. All we know is that someone dies and you bury them in a mahogany box or they?re cremated. There?s no sense of ceremony about seeing someone off. But some people just die. I know somebody who held her dying mother and screamed, ?No, not now!? I mean, hell.?
[From The Times]
I have two simultaneous thoughts about Winslet?s comments about cosmetic work and women doing too much and looking unnatural. One, she?s right and it IS disturbing to see so many women, especially young women, feel like they need Botox and fillers and a face full of makeup just to exist in the world. Two, it?s a bit rich for Winslet to criticize women for not feeling like they?re ?enough,? because that?s part of the societal pressure on women that everything they?re doing is wrong no matter what. My little aside is that about a decade ago, I theorized that Kate got some major face work which is why her eyes and eyebrows looked so ?different? all of a sudden.

This is one of the wildest celebrity stories of the week. You know how many celebrities hate when regular people notice them or slyly take photos of them when the celebrities are out and about in real life? Well, Hilary Swank is one of those celebs. Not only does she hate it when a regular person takes her photo, she will get in that person?s face about it, even if she has no idea if the person actually took a photo. Apparently, Hilary Swank got in some woman?s face at LAX. The problem? The woman claims she didn?t take Swank?s photo. Oh, and the woman was actually taking her two kids on a Make-a-Wish trip to Disneyland. OMG.
Hilary Swank has allegedly apologized after a tense encounter with a woman she thought was taking her photo at LAX airport in Los Angeles.
?At baggage claim, I was walking next to Hilary Swank,? Jada Bafus told The Daily Mail on Wednesday, December 10, per Page Six. ?And I did a double take on her because it?s Hilary Swank and I am a fan of her movies and stuff.?
Bafus had been at the airport with her sons Mason, 7, and Jack, 4, whom she was taking to Disneyland on a Make-a-Wish vacation. The boys have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic disorder that causes progressive loss of muscle. Bafus said she took out her phone ?because I got distracted? while trying to find her kids and husband.
?I just looked, like, you know, I was trying to call my husband,? she recalled. ?I wasn?t taking a picture.?
According to Page Six, Bafus had previously described the alleged encounter via a recent Instagram post, quoting Swank, 51, as saying, ?You got what you needed? Get what you came for? Enjoy that picture.?
?Ma?am ? I wasn?t trying a picture of you,? Bafus wrote, according to the outlet. ?I was trying to find my 2 terminally ill boys at baggage claim. But thanks for poking at a stressed mom on her kid?s Make-a-Wish trip. Iconic timing because she lived here in Spokane long ago!?
Adding an upside-down smiley face emoji, Bafus added: ?So random!?
In her interview with The Daily Mail, Bafus said that Swank ?hurt my feelings because I was starting my son?s Make-A-Wish trip, which she wouldn?t have known, but just one of those situations where it was one of my first encounters with a celebrity so I thought it was a little comical.?
She added, however, that the two-time Oscar winner reached out directly to apologize to her via Instagram and explained that she had not wanted her 2-year-old twins, Aya and Ohm, being photographed.
?I did not expect Hilary Swank to directly talk to me,? Bafus said. ?It was just, like, a ?Woah.? I was taken aback.?
Bafus? husband, Bryan, called the interaction ?unexpected? and wondered why Swank would ?snap back at anybody when you?re in that profession? but noted that they?re ?not upset? at her.
[From Us Weekly]
As Us Weekly notes, Swank did apologize on Instagram and asked that the woman not share it. The only thing I?ll say in Swank?s defense is that everyone?s stressed out at the airport, and Swank apparently had her kids with her, which added to the dispute (Swank thought that the woman was taking photos of her kids). But yeah?if this woman is to be believed, Swank was extremely rude, and that?s before we even get to the part about the woman traveling with her sons on a Make-a-Wish trip. I hope Hilary Swank felt like sh-t! I would in her place. I once texted something bitchy to my lawn guy, not realizing that he and his wife had just welcomed their first child the day before. I could not apologize fast enough! I still feel like sh-t about that.
