| Angelina Jolie showed 'Unbroken' to Louis Zamperini before he passed away | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

I finished reading our CB Book Club choice, Laura Hillenbrand?s Unbroken, last week. It was one of my favorite choices from our book club. I didn?t even mind the born-again Christian stuff! Louis Zamperini was an amazing man who lived an extraordinary life and the book honestly isn?t as depressing as you would think. And now I?m really, really looking forward to see how the Coen Brothers adapted the screenplay and to see how Angelina Jolie directs the story. Unbroken won?t be out until December, alas. But Angelina dropped some quotes to Entertainment Weekly, probably for their fall/winter film preview:
Before U.S. Olympian-turned-WWII hero Louis Zamperini died on July 2 at age 97, director Angelina Jolie showed him the film she?s made about him (in theaters Dec. 25), adapted from Laura Hillenbrand?s 2010 best-seller. ?I brought it on my laptop to the hospital,? Jolie says. ?It was a deeply moving, very profound few hours of my life. Telling his story is a giant responsibility.?
It was certainly an extraordinary life: Zamperini competed in the 1936 Olympics in track, enlisted with the U.S. Air Force in WWII, survived a crash into the Pacific, spent 47 days marooned on a raft, and then endured over two years of torture in a Japanese POW camp.
Playing Zamperini was no easy task. Jack O?Connell, a veteran of British TV?s teen drama Skins, had to lose nearly 30 pounds to appear emaciated in key scenes. ?You learn not to think of your own problems,? he says. ?That?s something you can attribute to Louie and Angie?they both strive to be selfless every day.?
Luckily, not every day was so grueling: One night, O?Connell formed an impromptu band with producer Matthew Baer and costars Garrett Hedlund (who plays a fellow prisoner) and Miyavi (a real-life Japanese rocker who portrays a sadistic guard in the film). Their tunes included ?Angie? by the Rolling Stones and, of course, the Kingsmen classic ?Louie Louie.?
[From Entertainment Weekly]
I would LOVE to see that band perform ?Angie? to Dame Angelina. She must have loved that. And the idea of Angelina showing Louie the movie while he was in the hospital… damn, that makes me tear up.
As for what Angelina has been up to recently? I guess she?s prepping for By the Sea, the film she wrote, which will be filming in Malta. Angie and Brad Pitt are going to star together, their first time on-screen together since Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Angelina recently said: ?We have been shy of it for quite a few years because it?s very heavy, about a relationship, people going through and surviving a lot together. It?s not easy. So we were nervous about being able to handle the material as actors and to take it on together.?
Angelina also recently spoke to Hello about how she and Brad have grown as a couple:
”We’ve grown as a couple. A relationship is one thing when you’re first together and it’s exciting. But now we’ve been together for many years and we have the children, it becomes a different kind of love. ‘It’s not just being lovers and partners and friends, it’s being a family man, which I love in him and feel very lucky about. My mother was a single mom and she really struggled to keep it all together? One of the things we’re particularly conscious of is how we treat each other in front of the children. We want to be an example of how to treat the opposite sex.”

Yep. Pretty much. I think Angelina and Brad are the ones who will end up making it, you know?

| Angelina Jolie acted shady, got heroin delivered to a 'drug den?' in 1998 | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

This is going to shock and appall: Angelina Jolie used to do DRUGS. Yes, so shocking. It?s not like she made multiple references to her drug usage over the years, or how she was openly cracked-out for several years in the last 1990s. Personally, I think of those self-harming early years as part of what makes her current incarnation so striking and so inspirational. She was a second-generation Hollywood wild child, a drug user and a mess. And she turned it around when she began traveling the world and working for the UNHCR. And the final death blow to her old drugged-out ways was when she adopted Maddox.
But before all that, Angelina was just a cracked-out wild child in 1998, pacing the floor of a scuzzy ?drug den? and talking to her father on the phone. Radar and the National Enquirer have been teasing images taken from this 1998 ?drug den? video for more than a week, and now they?ve finally released the old video. Angelina looks rough here, but I don?t think she seems all that cracked-out here. And it doesn?t really seem like a drug den either. According to Radar, this phone call video happened just after her dealer delivered some heroin and cocaine to her. Her dealer is the one who shot the video. Sixteen years ago.

| Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt had a quiet date night at Ago, an Italian joint | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt had one of their rare date nights on Saturday in West Hollywood. They went out to Ago, an Italian joint owned by Robert DeNiro. I?m sure they didn?t go to the place because it?s owned by DeNiro, although Angelina does have some connection to him ? Robert DeNiro cast her in The Good Shepherd back in 2005 and he praised her a great deal during the promotion of the film. She filmed that movie when she was pregnant with Shiloh. Just a little Brangelina History for you. So many connections!
Anyway, I?m guessing they were able to have a date night now because they?ve been on the move a lot over the past few months, with Angelina promoting Maleficent stateside and overseas ? she just got back from Japan a few days ago! ? and co-hosting the Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict. Angelina gets to take a break, sort of, for the rest of the summer. And by that I mean Unbroken is in post-production, so she?s probably still editing it and doing sound, music, all of that. But that?s quiet studio work for the most part and I?m hoping the Jolie-Pitt family lays low for the rest of the summer. Then, in the fall and winter, the Oscar Campaign will happen. I wonder how it will go.
Meanwhile, I?ve been sort of wondering about Brad?s big (Oscar-bait?) film, Fury. Fury comes out this winter as well and it could conceivably be another strong, quiet Oscar contender. But then there?s Shia Labeouf. The Beef is probably going to mess with the film promotion. A lot. Bedhead and I were chatting about how it would go if The Beef is still acting crazy and Bedhead theorized that Brad will simply cut Shia out of the promotion altogether and put the focus on some of the other actors, like Logan Lerman, Scott Eastwood and Michael Pena. Wouldn?t be the worst idea.

| Angelina Jolie returned to black-sack glory for 'Maleficent' Tokyo photocall | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Here are some photos from the Tokyo photocall of Maleficent today/yesterday/tomorrow. I think chronologically, the photocall came after yesterday?s premiere photos?? I covered those yesterday, obviously ? you can see them here. Angelina wore a figure-hugging black velvet Versace. For this photocall, Angelina was back to a beloved sack dress. She has a real problem with sack dresses. She needs rehab for sack-addiction. It?s also like she?s giving us a little nod, like, ?I know you think I wear too many sack dresses. Suck it.?
Meanwhile, did you know that UK Foreign Secretary William Hague was being criticized for hanging out with Angelina and Brad Pitt and for co-hosting the Global Summit on Sexual Violence in Conflict? It?s true. Some politicos in the UK say that Hague was too busy schmoozing it up with Brangelina and he should have been paying attention to what was going down in Iraq. I think that?s a lazy political complaint ? Hague and Jolie scheduled the conference months ago, and it was supposed to garner a lot of attention to often-forgotten or ignored part of warfare, which is sexual abuse and rape. One issue is not any more or less important, you know?

| Angelina Jolie in black Atelier Versace in Japan: at least it's not a sack dress' | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Here are some photos of Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning at the Tokyo premiere of Maleficent today (yesterday? tomorrow?) at the Ebisu Garden Place. This really wasn?t a god day for fashion p0rn from either woman. Shall we start with Angelina? Sure. Angelina wore a fancy version of a black tube dress. On the plus side, it?s not a sack. On the minus side, it?s a black tube dress and she has worn versions of this dress a million times before. COME ON, ANGIE. I mean, Dame Angelina. The dress is Atelier Versace, and I like the ?peaked? neckline, although I?m pretty sure that she wore nearly the same (non-peaked) dress to one of Brad?s premieres a few years ago, and it was also Versace. The House of Versace: providing sack dresses and tube dresses to Angelina Jolie since 2001.
As for Elle, she wore Alexander McQueen Fall 2014. Can you believe that this is a current design from the House of McQueen? Ugh. This looks like a gigantic doily!!!!! With feathers on the hem. Nooooooo.
As for how the film is doing ? Maleficent has already cracked the half-a-billion mark. According to Box Office Mojo, the film has made $521,580,000, making it the best box office showing of Angelina?s career. Good for her.

| Angelina Jolie brings Knox, Vivienne, Shiloh & Pax to Japan: so cute! | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Here are some great photos of Dame Angelina Jolie (YES) and four of her children arriving in Japan yesterday. Angelina is going to be premiering Maleficent in Japan, that?s why she flew in with the kids. I?m counting four ? Knoxy, Vivienne, Shiloh and Pax. No Maddox, no Zahara. Madd and Z got to go to London two weeks ago, that?s probably why. Now it?s time for Dame Angie to spend some quality time with the other kids.
I sort of miss seeing Zahara?s street-style fashion, because Z has much better style than her mom. But I enjoy seeing Knox and Vivienne so much ? they?re getting so tall! Vivienne is going to be such a beautiful woman. She seems like a girly-girl too. Knox?s wave to the paps is killing me! He must be low-key like his dad. I should note: these kids are remarkably well-behaved considering they just got off a 10-hour flight, easy. Probably longer.
Shiloh?s shaggy pageboy hair is killing me too! It?s so cute. She probably wanted it to look like Mick Jagger circa 1973, but it basically looks like Shy Di circa 1981, maybe even the famous Dorothy Hamill haircut. Also, is seems like Shiloh is a skateboarder now, and Brad and Angelina just installed a HUGE skate-park at their Los Feliz home ? you can see the photos here.

| Dame Angelina Jolie's kids are 'obsessed with her tattoos,' they want ink too | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Here are some photos of Dame Angelina Jolie (YES!!), Brad Pitt, Zahara and Maddox arriving at LAX on Saturday after their week-long stay in London. And what a week it was ? Angelina launched an enormously successful Global Summit and she was made an honorary Dame by Queen Elizabeth. Perfection. Black sacks for everyone!
Is anyone else wondering about the young girl who seems to be part of their group? She doesn?t look old enough to be an employee, nor does it seem like she?s the same age as any of the Jolie-Pitt kids, like?maybe she?s Maddox?s little girlfriend? But she looks like she?s a few years older than Madd. Who is she? Is she some adopted Jolie-Pitt that we?ve never seen? Is this our long-lost Fax Cannes Jolie-Pitt? (Fax Jolie-Pitt = a really old joke about how difficult it was to ID Vivienne, Knox and Shiloh several years ago, so I just made up a mystery Jolie-Pitt child named Fax Cannes J-P.)
Meanwhile, Us Weekly has a cute story about how the kids are obsessed with Dame Angelina?s many, many tattoos:
Angelina Jolie’s children are drawn to her ink! The Maleficent star’s six kids with Brad Pitt — sons Maddox, 12, Pax, 10, and Knox, 5, and daughters Zahara, 9, Shiloh, 8, and Vivienne, 5 — can’t get enough of their mom’s extensive body art and are constantly asking questions about it, a source reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly.
“They are obsessed with her tattoos and always ask what they mean,” the insider tells Us, adding that Jolie, 39, is “happy to explain her tats to the kids.” (Among the 13 designs is an etching of the birth coordinates for each of her children, who were born all over the world, in Cambodia, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Namibia, and France.)
The source notes that Shiloh is especially fascinated by her mom’s ink. And Pax is already eager to get his own. “Angie tells him he has plenty of time,” the insider says.
[From Us Weekly]
My favorite Dame Angie-tatts are the Cambodian prayer one on her shoulder and the coordinates of her kids? birthplaces on her upper arm. My least favorite is that gigantic tiger on her lower back. But I imagine the kids like the tiger. But what about Brad?s ink? He?s got a lot of ink too, and he?s gotten a lot more in the past decade, since he?s been with Angelina. Hm. Maybe mom?s ink is just better?
PS? Zahara?s Pink kicks give me life. And Mr. Dame Angie looks really good in this ensemble ? so much hotter than his usual beige linen uniform.

| Dame Angelina Jolie awarded honorary title by Queen Elizabeth: amazing? | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

Angelina Jolie. Two-time Oscar winner. Mother of six. UN special envoy for the High Commission on Refugees. Humanitarian. Actress/producer/director. DAME. Yes, this is happening!! Of all the prominent, celebrity women of Angelina?s generation, I?m sometimes surprised by just how well Angelina has done for herself. I mean, I?ve been a fan since the ?90s, since before Brad, I was an Angeloonie. But if you had asked me in 1998 if I thought Angelina would turn out to be this kind of global superstar in so many different ways, I would have thought you were joking. On the final day of Angelina?s co-hosted Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, Queen Elizabeth II made her an honorary Dame.
Just call her Dame Angelina! Angelina Jolie was awarded with the honorary title by Queen Elizabeth II in London Friday, PEOPLE has confirmed.
The actress and humanitarian, 39, who co-chaired a global summit to end sexual violence in conflict in London this week, was made an honorary Dame Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George for extraordinary service to U.K. foreign policy.
The title is the female equivalent of an honorary knighthood. Jolie is among a thousand people named on the Queen’s annual Birthday Honours list, which also awarded a knighthood to Daniel Day-Lewis, a Companion of Honour order for Dame Maggie Smith and an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for Homeland star Damian Lewis.
Jolie’s honor recognizes her contribution towards the British foreign policy objective to end sexual violence in conflict ? she founded the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI) in the U.K. two years ago.

| Angelina Jolie finally got to meet a member of the royal family: Duchess Camilla! | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

SACK SLEEVES. That?s how Angelina Jolie?s need for sackiness has manifested itself today. A beautiful charcoal grey suit which would have fit her like a dream, save for the sack sleeves. Angelina is so funny. Anyway, these are some photos from Day 4 of the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, with Brad Pitt joining Jolie for the second day in a row. Superficial comment: I don?t like her hairstyle here. Too ?old? and mumsy. Also: I know some people will start yelling about how she looks exhausted. I imagine she IS exhausted. Plus, she?s been crying a lot during the summit. She probably cried off all of her makeup.
Yesterday, Angelina was invited to Clarence House where she met Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. They had a nice chat:
Camilla and the Oscar winning actress met at Clarence House to discuss their separate campaigns to aid rape victims. The two women have worked in recent years to highlight the issue of sexual violence and they were joined by Foreign Secretary William Hague.
The discussions covered the common ground between the women’s campaigns, with the pair sharing ideas. Camilla, 66, has visited rape crisis centres across the UK and spearheaded a scheme to provide victims with toiletries after undergoing forensic examinations. The Duchess of Cornwall came up with the idea of providing rape survivors with toiletries after speaking to women during a visit to a rape crisis centre in Derbyshire. Last year she said she hoped the project would help people feel better at a traumatic time in their lives. The two-year pilot scheme will see shower and bath products donated by firms collected into wash bags and given to victims.
[From The Express]
On one side, I?m happy to see that at least one member of the royal family thought it would be a good idea to participate in the Global Summit. On the other side? how is this an issue that only ONE member of the royal family can get behind? It would have been great to see Prince Harry, William, Kate, Charles, or the York princesses get involved too. It?s not like being against rape is a controversial position.

| Angelina Jolie: Maleficent's 'stolen wings' story is a 'metaphor for rape' | Added 10 years ago | Source: CeleBitchy |

|
|
Angelina Jolie managed to find a sack dress in convenient pants-form. These are some pics from Day 2 of Jolie and William Hague?s Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict. Sack pants!! Angelina attended some of the speeches (she cried) and she gave an interview to BBC Radio?s Woman?s Hour (what, we only get an hour?) about the summit. The conversation turned to Maleficent, which is turning into the biggest hit of Angelina?s career. Full disclosure: I still haven?t seen it! I will. I don?t think this is a spoiler considering it was in some of the teaser trailers, but still ? SPOILERS. You?ve been warned. Apparently, Maleficent had wings but they were stolen from her. She was drugged and her wings were torn off her body. And Angelina told BBC Radio that the ?stolen wings? story is a metaphor for rape:
Angelina Jolie spoke to BBC Radio’s Woman’s Hour in a live broadcast Tuesday, June 10, where she compared one harrowing scene in Maleficent to rape. Addressing more than 300 government dignitaries at the London-hosted Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, UN Special Envoy Jolie was asked about the scene in the fairy tale fantasy film, in which the titular character’s wings are torn off her body by a childhood friend.
“We were very conscious, the writer [Linda Woolverton] and I, that it was a metaphor for rape,” Jolie said of the harrowing sequence, in which Maleficent’s wings are stolen as she’s in a drug-induced sleep. “This would be the thing that would make her lose sight?. At a certain point, the question of the story is what could possibly bring her back?”
Jolie explained to BBC Radio, “The core of [the film] is abuse, and how the abused have a choice of abusing others or overcoming and remaining loving, open people.” She added, “The question was asked, ‘What could make a woman become so dark? To lose all sense of her maternity, her womanhood, and her softness?’”
Jolie spoke about her 2011 directorial debut, In the Land of Blood of Honey, which tells the story of the rape of Bosnian women during the 1995 Bosnian War. “I didn’t realize how emotional this would be,” Jolie said of the film, which, after its release, prompted the Hague to become involved with the issue of rape in times of conflict.
The star’s reasons for tackling tough issues comes from her own life experiences, Jolie explained, revisiting her 2013 op-ed, in which she shared about her preventative double mastectomy.
“Having lost my mother [Marcheline Bertrand, along] with the thought that if she had the surgery, she may have been around years longer to have met my other children? The thought of telling my children I had cancer?because I didn’t have the surgery?was more frightening to me. It was very important, and I am very happy that I made a decision that will help me be around for my children. I wanted to speak to other women, I wanted them to know there were options. It was, in fact, an easy choice.”
[From Us Weekly]
Will this stolen-wings-as-a-rape-metaphor story upset people who think Angelina might be trivializing actual rape? It does not upset me. From what I understand, the scene in Maleficent is harrowing and I think representing that kind of physical violation can be used legitimately in a work of art to represent rape. She?s not saying ?being photographed by the paparazzi is like rape,? like some people. She?s talking about a fictional representation, an artistic metaphor. But I?m consistently surprised by what some people choose to complain about when it comes to Jolie.
PS… I’ll have the new photos of Jolie & Pitt in another post later today.
