SACK SLEEVES. That?s how Angelina Jolie?s need for sackiness has manifested itself today. A beautiful charcoal grey suit which would have fit her like a dream, save for the sack sleeves. Angelina is so funny. Anyway, these are some photos from Day 4 of the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, with Brad Pitt joining Jolie for the second day in a row. Superficial comment: I don?t like her hairstyle here. Too ?old? and mumsy. Also: I know some people will start yelling about how she looks exhausted. I imagine she IS exhausted. Plus, she?s been crying a lot during the summit. She probably cried off all of her makeup.
Yesterday, Angelina was invited to Clarence House where she met Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall. They had a nice chat:
Camilla and the Oscar winning actress met at Clarence House to discuss their separate campaigns to aid rape victims. The two women have worked in recent years to highlight the issue of sexual violence and they were joined by Foreign Secretary William Hague.
The discussions covered the common ground between the women’s campaigns, with the pair sharing ideas. Camilla, 66, has visited rape crisis centres across the UK and spearheaded a scheme to provide victims with toiletries after undergoing forensic examinations. The Duchess of Cornwall came up with the idea of providing rape survivors with toiletries after speaking to women during a visit to a rape crisis centre in Derbyshire. Last year she said she hoped the project would help people feel better at a traumatic time in their lives. The two-year pilot scheme will see shower and bath products donated by firms collected into wash bags and given to victims.

On one side, I?m happy to see that at least one member of the royal family thought it would be a good idea to participate in the Global Summit. On the other side? how is this an issue that only ONE member of the royal family can get behind? It would have been great to see Prince Harry, William, Kate, Charles, or the York princesses get involved too. It?s not like being against rape is a controversial position.

Angelina Jolie managed to find a sack dress in convenient pants-form. These are some pics from Day 2 of Jolie and William Hague?s Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict. Sack pants!! Angelina attended some of the speeches (she cried) and she gave an interview to BBC Radio?s Woman?s Hour (what, we only get an hour?) about the summit. The conversation turned to Maleficent, which is turning into the biggest hit of Angelina?s career. Full disclosure: I still haven?t seen it! I will. I don?t think this is a spoiler considering it was in some of the teaser trailers, but still ? SPOILERS. You?ve been warned. Apparently, Maleficent had wings but they were stolen from her. She was drugged and her wings were torn off her body. And Angelina told BBC Radio that the ?stolen wings? story is a metaphor for rape:
Angelina Jolie spoke to BBC Radio’s Woman’s Hour in a live broadcast Tuesday, June 10, where she compared one harrowing scene in Maleficent to rape. Addressing more than 300 government dignitaries at the London-hosted Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, UN Special Envoy Jolie was asked about the scene in the fairy tale fantasy film, in which the titular character’s wings are torn off her body by a childhood friend.
“We were very conscious, the writer [Linda Woolverton] and I, that it was a metaphor for rape,” Jolie said of the harrowing sequence, in which Maleficent’s wings are stolen as she’s in a drug-induced sleep. “This would be the thing that would make her lose sight?. At a certain point, the question of the story is what could possibly bring her back?”
Jolie explained to BBC Radio, “The core of [the film] is abuse, and how the abused have a choice of abusing others or overcoming and remaining loving, open people.” She added, “The question was asked, ‘What could make a woman become so dark? To lose all sense of her maternity, her womanhood, and her softness?’”
Jolie spoke about her 2011 directorial debut, In the Land of Blood of Honey, which tells the story of the rape of Bosnian women during the 1995 Bosnian War. “I didn’t realize how emotional this would be,” Jolie said of the film, which, after its release, prompted the Hague to become involved with the issue of rape in times of conflict.
The star’s reasons for tackling tough issues comes from her own life experiences, Jolie explained, revisiting her 2013 op-ed, in which she shared about her preventative double mastectomy.
“Having lost my mother [Marcheline Bertrand, along] with the thought that if she had the surgery, she may have been around years longer to have met my other children? The thought of telling my children I had cancer?because I didn’t have the surgery?was more frightening to me. It was very important, and I am very happy that I made a decision that will help me be around for my children. I wanted to speak to other women, I wanted them to know there were options. It was, in fact, an easy choice.”

Will this stolen-wings-as-a-rape-metaphor story upset people who think Angelina might be trivializing actual rape? It does not upset me. From what I understand, the scene in Maleficent is harrowing and I think representing that kind of physical violation can be used legitimately in a work of art to represent rape. She?s not saying ?being photographed by the paparazzi is like rape,? like some people. She?s talking about a fictional representation, an artistic metaphor. But I?m consistently surprised by what some people choose to complain about when it comes to Jolie.

Angelina Jolie is going to be in London all week for the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, a summit she is co-hosting with UK Foreign Secretary William Hague, her new BFF. Hague has introduced her to Prime Minister David Cameron before ? a few months ago, Hague took Angelina to Downing Street for breakfast or brunch, and he brought her to Downing Street again for the kick-off of the summit. Cameron even tweeted a photo from the meeting (the comments on this tweet are crazy/funny/sad).

Here are some brand-new photos of Angelina Jolie and UK Foreign Secretary William Hague opening up their Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in London today. Hague and Jolie have been BFFs for more than a year now, and Hague has cited Angelina?s work, both with the UN and her film In The Land of Blood and Honey, as one of his biggest eye-openers for the prevalence of sexual violence in war zones and conflicts. They have traveled together to bring attention to conflict zones where women are being (or have been) victimized. And now they?re co-hosting this summit together.
It seems weird to talk about fashion in this post, but it?s my job, so I?ll just say? I like Angelina in white. The white is so refreshing after her all-black uniforms and her Maleficent costumes/red carpet looks. That being said, I think I would have liked this better with a straight skirt and the jacket sleeves need to be less puffy. The suit is Michael Kors, by the way. She’s been wearing more Kors lately. Huh.
At the opening of the summit, Angelina and Hague both made speeches. Hague praised her, and Angelina dedicated the event to an unnamed and ?abandoned? rape victim in Bosnia. She said in part:
“We must send a message around the world that there is no disgrace in being a survivor of sexual violence, that the shame is on the aggressor?. It is a myth that rape is an inevitable part of conflict. There is nothing inevitable about it. It is a weapon of war aimed at civilians. It has nothing to do with sex, everything to do with power. We live in safe countries with doctors we can go to when we’re hurt, police we can turn to when we’re wronged, and institutions that protect us. They live in refugee camps, on bombed-out streets, in areas where there is no law, no protection, and not even the hope of justice. We need to shatter that culture of impunity and make justice the norm, not the exception, for these crimes. We need political will replicated across the world and we need treat this subject as a priority.?

THR had an excellent story yesterday about how Angelina Jolie was headed to China for her first-ever promotional leg in that country. Angelina often makes stops in Asia for her promotional tours, but for this Maleficent tour, Angelina has stopped in Shanghai for the first time. Apparently, Brad Pitt was scheduled to come with Angelina (according to THR), which is also a new thing ? Brad has been banned from traveling to China for years following his appearance in Seven Years in Tibet. There was some talk of China softening on Brad enough to allow World War Z to officially come to China, but it didn?t happen.
So, these are some pics from today?s photocall in Shanghai, where Angelina was basically just standing on a balcony, looking fabulous in this black Michael Kors. The Mail says that her heels were custom-made Louboutins, this time a gold pair. They gave her an early birthday cake too! She turns 39 tomorrow. She looks great, doesn’t she?
Maleficent will be released in China on June 20th. Which is also World Refugee Day, just FYI.

First, the good Jolie-Pitt news? Maleficent is a HUGE hit. Box office analysts were predicting something like a $60-65 million opening domestically, and Maleficent ended up making $70 million in North America and $100 million overseas for its opening weekend. This is Angelina Jolie?s best opening ever! Experts say that Disney?s marketing towards women helped a lot, and the audience was over 60% ladies, young and old. You can read THR?s analysis here ? A Million Ways to Die in the West underperformed and X-Men: Days of Future Past is still chugging along.
Did you see Maleficent? I did not. I will see it though, I just didn?t feel like seeing it this weekend. I kept seeing critics say that the script was weak and that Angelina was sort of camp, but I guess it didn?t matter. I told you that the alliance of Disney Machine and the Jolie-Pitt Machine would be fruitful. Huzzah! I?m glad Angelina has a hit on her hands. Now she can sell this overseas a little bit more and then move on to her Oscar campaign for Unbroken. 2014 is The Year of La Jolie.
And now for the bad news? is anyone else genuinely disturbed by the story of Vitalii Sediuk, the Ukrainian ?prankster? and assailant who attacked Brad Pitt last week? For one thing, I?ve never really thought of Sediuk?s stunts as genuine pranks ? they always seemed like bizarre cries for help from a man with mental health issues (at best) or disturbingly inappropriate public assaults from a man with a lot of hate (at worst). So, Sediuk was in court on Friday and he ended up making some sort of deal ? no jail time, three years of probation and ?a year’s worth of psychological counseling.? He also has been ordered to stay 500 yards away from Brad at all times. The most disturbing detail in People Mag?s coverage was this:
Asked by PEOPLE why Sediuk did what he did, his attorney, Anthony Willoughby, replied: “He told me, ‘I just saw Brad Pitt and thought, ‘I’ll make Angelina Jolie jealous.’ … He hugged [Pitt] around the waist and security grabbed him. He didn’t hit him ? at least not intentionally. Something may have happened in the scuffle.”

Is it enough to just call him a ?freak? and move on? Sure. Let?s do that. It does feel like he?s mentally disturbed and he?s falling through the cracks ? maybe being locked up in a psych ward would do him some good.

She looks magnificent in the promotional images for ?Maleficent,? and it turns out Angelina Jolie got a little boost from legendary fashion photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.
The legendary lensmen told WWD, ?We wanted to try something more bold and graphic, sort of unlike the usual movie posters.?
?It was important to us that [Jolie] didn?t come across as [an] ?evil queen,? and that she had a lot of emotion and depth to her character- all the complexities women have.?
Mert and Marcus added, ?She is partly human, partly fairy, part creature. We wanted to respect the original Fifties [Maleficent] animation, but make [the character] edgy.? And in the end they came up with ?a fusion of Angelina and Maleficent.?

When did you get your first boyfriend/girlfriend? My first (real) kiss was when I was 13, but I hesitate to call that dude my boyfriend. But still, I guess that?s the common enough age ? 13/14 is when your hormones kick in and you really start looking at your peers in a different way. Maddox Jolie-Pitt is only 12 years old, but he turns 13 in August. He is the oldest of the Jolie-Pitt children and I?ve always thought that he had and has a special bond with his mom, because it was just the two of them for years before Brad came along. But now Angelina?s little man is growing up? she revealed to Entertainment Tonight that Maddox has a girlfriend!
Angie says the girlfriend is ?great?I won?t embarrass him. She?s lovely. She lives in England. She?s very cool.? She also says that Maddox gets to see his girlfriend often enough because ?We go there as often as possible. It?s really, really sweet. She?s a great lady, so I?m lucky. So far, we?re doing good.? So? Madd has an English girlfriend! Huh. I think it?s a little bit weird that Angie calls her a ?great lady? ? it makes the girlfriend sound like she?s in her 30s or something. But Angelina is probably just trying not to embarrass him. Adorable.

Angelina Jolie has really been kicking ass during the Maleficent promotional tour, hasn?t she? And we haven?t even had an American premiere yet ? just think about how good it?s going to be in the next few weeks. Anyway, nothing can really compare to Angelina telling Gwyneth Paltrow-esque privileged moms to STFU, but her interview with Good Morning America does have its moments. First, some media-business stuff: I think it?s interesting that Angelina went to GMA with her first morning show interview. She used to give her first interviews to The Today Show and Ann Curry. But Today jettisoned Curry, so now they don?t get her exclusives. It?s interesting, isn?t it?
As for the interview? George Stephanopoulos asks Angelina is she?d ever consider running for public office. What?s interesting is that you can tell that she?s actually considered it at some point, but she says: ?You know, if I thought I’d be effective, I would.
