Earlier this week, Angelina Jolie made a public appearance in London. She?s in England to begin work on Maleficent, which should be starting soon. In the meantime, Angelina decided to use her new position as ?Special Envoy to the High Commission on Refugees? to do a photo op with the UK?s Foreign Secretary William Hague and give a public speech about sexual violence in war zones. This is part of what Angelina said:
“Throughout history, rape and sexual violence have been used as weapons of war, and in modern warfare as, women and girls have become primary targets, the problem has grown tremendously…The wars in Rwanda and Bosnia brought the issue to the world stage, and afterwards the international community took significant steps to end impunity for the worst atrocities and to combat sexual violence in conflict, but although progress has been made, there is so much that needs to be done”

Apparently, this is all part of a new initiative by the Cameron government, working in conjunction with the UN, non-profit charities, human rights campaigns and medical volunteers – the hope is to gather more evidence of human rights crimes to make better legal cases for the trial and conviction of those who use rape and sexual abuse as weapons of warfare. I don?t know if Angelina Jolie has been involved with this for a while and she approached William Hague, or if this is an initiative thought up by the Foreign Office and they asked Angelina to be there. My guess is that this is an initiative Angelina has been involved with for a while, and the Cameron government was recently brought on board. Either way it went down… this woman makes me proud to be a Jolie-stan.

Looking dashing as always, Angelina Jolie was spotted at the screening of her newest film ?In the Land of Blood and Honey? in London, England this afternoon (May 29).
The 36-year-old joined forces with Foreign Secretary William Hague at the Foreign Commonwealth Office to launch a dedicated British team to combat and prevent sexual violence overseas ahead of the film?s screening.
This new initiative was created ahead of Britain?s 2013 presidency campaign and Mr. Hague spoke out saying, ?It is in the context of war and conflict that sexual violence is found to the most appalling degree, and on a scale most of us cannot imagine.?
"Sexual violence is an issue which is central to conflict prevention and to peace building worldwide," he added.
Jolie is a special envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and has visited countries in need including Iraq, Dafur in Sudan and Libya and her new film is her big directing debut and deals with mass rapes by Bosnian Serb forces.

Last year, Angelina Jolie debuted her new jewelry line in association/partnership with jewelry designer Robert Procop. The profits from the ?Style of Jolie? line go to charity – we covered a preview of some of the pieces here. While I don?t think the ?Style of Jolie? line is full-on awful, I do see Angelina?s 1970s-style-influences all over these pieces. She loves a smoky topaz. She loves emeralds. She loves yellow gold, and she likes jewelry that I would call ?chunky?. Best case scenario: I like some of earrings and I would probably wear some of the rings. But in general, this is not my aesthetic, although I should note that ?The Style of Jolie? is getting some love from Hollywood.
Anyway, Procop and Jolie have designed even more pieces for 2012, and Procop gave an interview to People Magazine to talk up the line:
Her engagement ring caused quite a stir, but Angelina Jolie is hoping the latest gems from her jewelry line, Style of Jolie, attract even more attention.
?It?s a labor of love,? Jolie?s co-designer, Robert Procop, tells PEOPLE. That?s in part because 100 percent of profits benefit the actress?s charity, the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict. In fact, she?s planning to break ground on a school for girls in Qala Gadu, Afghanistan, using funds from jewelry sales.
?Our commitment is always supporting the children?s charity, which remains the overall intention and purpose of the collection,? Procop adds.
But there?s fun involved, too; Procop says the pair ?strive for nothing less than artistic innovation with every jewel,? like the newest offering, a sleek emerald bracelet.
?She is very classically chic,? he says of Jolie. ?We cultivated this style, which echoes a woman?s timeless allure. When you see the collection, it has a distinction. When you look at it, you recognize that it?s the Style of Jolie.?
Last year, Procop told PEOPLE that Jolie was involved ?every step of the way? in the design process. ?[The collection] is what she enjoys wearing on the red carpet, but also what she enjoys when she?s at home,? he added.
She enjoys wearing it on her ring finger, too; Procop created her engagement ring with input from her longtime partner, Brad Pitt. According to a rep for the jeweler, ?the feedback [on the ring] has been wonderful. It?s all about love.?

We can’t use the image of the new emerald bracelet (it?s just an emerald tennis bracelet set in yellow gold – it?s pretty but kind of dated), but you can see it at People online. I also looked around and Procop does have a site and there are lots of photos of The Style of Jolie line, which you can see here (I?m including some images below). I could totally see my mom wearing this stuff – back in 1979, while wearing a fashion-forward muumuu.

When I wrote about Jennifer Aniston?s $40,000-a-month rental yesterday, the Pity Party Patrol came out in full force to claim that Brangelina NEVER gets the kind of mild criticism Aniston ENDURES for their respective excesses. I beg to differ – we always cover Brangelina?s real estate rumors, especially when the alleged purchases/rentals are crazy and/or expensive. Most recently, we discussed the rumor that Angelina Jolie bought Brad a motherchucking WATERFALL for his birthday. We also discussed the possible real estate purchases/rentals that the Jolie-Pitts might be undertaking in England, as the family settles down so Angelina can film Maleficent. Now E! News reports that the early reports (that the Jolie-Pitts bought a UK mansion outright) are false, and they are in fact renting a big mansion. I?m including some of the aerial photos below, and here?s E!?s story:
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt just snapped up one fancy rental home. While the betrothed actors didn’t buy the Whornes Place estate in London, it turns out the ber-famous couple is temporarily residing in another “palatial” home in the area. And it looks like they’re settling in.
Despite reports Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie forked over $16 million to reside in the Whornes Palace in the West London town of Richmond, E! News has learned exclusively the charitable pair is renting a huge mansion in one of the most “exclusive areas” in the United Kingdom.
“[Brad and Angelina] have decided to settle into one property rather than move around because they are going to be in London for 15 months,” a source told E! News. “It seems better for the whole family if they have a proper base. They have been moved into a palatial mansion that resembles the White House on the exclusive Wentworth golf course in Surrey. It is in a beautiful, gated community, one of the most exclusive areas in the U.K.”
But, Jolie and Pitt aren’t the first celebrities to reside in the stunning home, which sits 21 miles outside of London.
The estate has had its share of star-studded residents, including Elton John and Fergie, the Duchess of York.
And there’s plenty of room for Jolie to stretch her legs.
“The house has eight bedrooms and eight bathrooms, staff quarters, a gazebo in the garden, an indoor swimming pool and a playground for the children,” the source said.
“They have also hired a full time chef.”
Meanwhile, there’s still no word yet on when the newly engaged pair, who moved into the home a week ago, will tie the knot.
But, their new digs certainly would make for one fine place for a wedding. We’re just sayin’.

There?s no mention of how much this rental costs per month, but I can imagine that it would be in the tens of thousands (per month). I should also note this – considering Angelina is the big-name ?star? of Maleficent and the studio wants to keep her happy, I?m guessing that the studio is probably paying for all or part of the Jolie-Pitts? living expenses. I don?t know what Angelina has in her contracts – she might get a general ?living allowance? stipend, or the studio might pay for everything flat-out.
(Sidenote: I?d still really like to know what happened to the converted farmhouse Angelina bought in England back in 2001. Did she sell it?)
By the way – Brangelina should be in the South of France within the next few days. Brad?s film is competing at the Cannes Film Festival. So? Brangelina red carpet sighting! It will be Angelina?s first red carpet with her engagement ring.

Back in April, I nearly had to quit this job and start writing sexually explicit Michael Fassbender-Angelina Jolie fan fiction full time. It was widely reported that Fassy and Jolie would soon be at work together on Ridley Scott?s adaptation of Cormac McCarthy?s The Counselor. Well, Fassbender is still very much attached to the film, but it looks like Angelina is out. Perhaps Brad Pitt found another way to Fassdong-block her? If you were Brad Pitt and you knew your baby-mama was considering a job that involved writhing around with Michael Fassbender (once again, this is just in my fan fiction version), wouldn?t you put your foot down? Fassbender is the relationship dealbreaker. But it?s good news for Cameron Diaz, who now seems like she?s got the role meant for Angelina?
No, you’re not reading this wrong: Cameron Diaz is joining Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor,” taking the role previously eyed by Angelina Jolie. And yes, we’re just as surprised as you are.
Twitch have broken the news, marking a rather surprising twist in the casting of the highly anticipated film based on a spec script by literary master Cormac McCarthy. In a project that has seen a ton of names come up to bat looking to for a role, Diaz is a name that hasn’t been mentioned, and really, isn’t quite in the same calibre as the other talent involved. But it looks like she has impressed all the right people and is taking on a role that is very much outside her wheelhouse.
Reports have bene conflicting about which roles actresses have sought, but according to Twitch, Jolie was looking at the role of Malkina (some said she was toying with the smaller part of Laura), the Almodvarean femme fatale of the film. Penelope Cruz was last reported to be kicking the tires on the part but it looks like the Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie power couple casting for the movie won’t be panning out. Sorry tabloids. But hell, this marks the bravest role Diaz has taken on, well, ever.
The story follows an attorney (Michael Fassbender) who is in search of a big payday after he proposes to his girlfriend, Laura. So he hooks up with Reiner (Bardem), an acquaintance with deep criminal ties, for a new business proposition: they’ll take $20 million worth of cocaine from south of the border and offload it themselves, aided by the no-good Westray (Pitt). As you might imagine, things do not go well for anyone involved. In the script, Malkina is a hyper-sexualized Argentinean woman who’s hooked up with Reiner, and it’s pretty meaty part all around. But obviously, it has be tweaked to fit Diaz and like we said, she’s never really done anything like this ever, so it’s a ballsy move.

Yes, I heard rumors that Angelina was thinking about doing a glorified cameo as the fiance, not the hot-to-trot lady. So maybe Camy will end up with the meaty role and Angelina still might play Fassy?s fiance? Or we could just wait until the Cleopatra casting sorts itself out. CoughFassyIsMarcAntonycough. Anyway, it?s assumed that Jolie backed away from this potential commitment because filming Maleficent will probably take up her whole summer.
Speaking of Maleficent, The Hollywood Reporter has some interesting additions to the cast. Elle Fanning will be playing Aurora (the princess), Sharlto Copley will play ?the half-human, half-fairy bastard son of the human king? (WTF?). And Imelda Staunton (I love her) and Miranda Richardson have just joined the cast – they?ll be playing Knotgrass and Flittle ?two of the three pixies who end up taking care of Aurora.? Oh, and that young actor Sam Riley will be in it too. He?s in On the Road – he?s got that weird, haunting beauty – apparently he?s playing ?Diaval, a raven who changes into human form and is Maleficent?s right hand.?

In Touch Weekly has a story that is called, no joke, ?Angelina Hates The Ring: Newly engaged Angelina Jolie thinks Brad Pitt doesn?t ?get? her.? Obviously. I?m including some photos of Angelina in the field during her April 22nd UNHCR trip to Ecuador – while she was in the field, meeting refugees, she was not wearing her ring. In Touch notes that she also wasn?t wearing her ring for the official meeting she had with Ecuador?s foreign minister. So what does it mean if Angelina doesn?t want to wear her $500,000 rock while she?s tending to her UNCHR duties? It means she hates Brad, of course.
It?s only been a few weeks since Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt announced their engagement. But as she met with the foreign minister of Ecuador on April 22, the ring finger on her left hand was noticeably bare. While some claim she thought the $500,000 sparkler wasn?t appropriate for a serious meeting, everyone knows that engagement rings are meant to be worn always. So why did Angelina really ditch the ring that Brad helped design himself?
?She isn?t fond of it,? a friend confides. ?Nothing against Brad?s design. She?s just never been enamored of white diamonds.?
Indeed, the friend says Angelina had been hoping for a less traditional stone.
?Emeralds are her favorite.? And she?s been complaining that Brad?s choice of the 10-carat diamond, rather than an emerald, ?shows how little he knows her.? Of course, her hissy fit over the ring shows a lot about her, as well.

I like emeralds too, but I don?t think I would like an emerald engagement ring. But I?m a traditionalist like that? for the most part. If a dude was hellbent on NOT giving me a white diamond for an engagement ring, I would also accept a sapphire – just because those are MY favorite gemstones. I just feel like sapphires, emeralds, rubies and the like are better suited for anniversary presents or Christmas presents or birthday presents rather than an engagement ring. Once again, just me.
As for Angelina not wearing her ring while she was in Ecuador – I get it. She didn?t want to wear her huge diamonds while she was in the field, working with poor refugees. She really only wears big, blinged-out pieces when she?s on the red carpet anyway, so I think of her normal, everyday style as pretty bling-less generally. So while I think Angelina probably loves her ring and plans to wear it most of the time, I hope Brad isn?t expecting her to wear it every day, no matter where she is or what she?s doing. Because that won’t happen.

A year and a half ago, Angelina Jolie was barred from filming exteriors for In the Land of Blood and Honey in Bosnia. Well? maybe I?m not remembering that correctly. There were protests, and a Bosnian women?s group made a huge fuss, and the Bosnian government was like, ?Hey, Angelina, show us the script!? And I think Angelina was like, ?Meh, I don?t need to film exteriors in your country that badly, okay?? At the end of the day, some kind of ceasefire was issued, and I think a second unit crew filmed some stuff in Bosnia, but the bulk of the film was shot in Hungary. But! When Angelina promoted ITLOBAH, she made sure to have a big promotional push in Bosnia, and while there were some complaints and grumbling, the reaction to the film and Jolie personally were overwhelmingly positive. So now Bosnia wants to make Angelina an honorary citizen!
Angelina Jolie is now a true citizen of the world!
During Monday’s parliamentary session, government officials of the Sarajevo Canton chose to bestow the ultimate commendation on the newly-engaged actress: an honorary citizenship, to thank her for bringing awareness to the three-year Bosnian war with In the Land of Blood and Honey, the gritty, ultra-realistic film she wrote and directed about the bloody conflict.
A source tells Us Weekly the government has chosen to recognize Jolie, 36, because of “her contribution to the preservation of truth about the war in Sarajevo and in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and her dedication to protection of the principles of humanity, democracy, tolerance, and solidarity between people of different ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds.”
According to a government spokesman, “Laureates will receive their honors at the special session of the Sarajevo Canton’s parliament, to be held on May 3.”
Though Jolie has yet to respond to the invite, the jetsetting mom of six is deeply committed to her humanitarian work. This weekend, the star–who was recently promoted to special envoy of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, after serving as a goodwill ambassador for over a decade–took some time off from celebrating her engagement to Brad Pitt to visit with Colombian refugees in Ecuador.

I haven?t even been able to keep track of all of Angelina?s passports and such. She?s an American citizen, of course, but she also carries a passport with the United Nations too, right? And she was made a citizen of Cambodia in 2005. I feel like there?s more, right? Didn?t Namibia offer citizenship to Angelina and Brad after Shiloh was born there? And Angelina used to be married to a British citizen too – did she ever become a UK citizen? So many questions. But sure, a wonderful honor for Angelina. It?s nice that the government recognized what she was trying to do with her film, and this is a nice way to thank her.

Last week, Angelina Jolie was promoted to ?Special Envoy? to the United Nations High Commission on Refugees. Jolie has been the goodwill ambassador to the UNHCR for more than a decade, and her new ?special envoy? position gives her more power, more responsibility, and probably more work. Late last week, Angelina and her family headed off to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. I wondered if they were just on vacation, or if they had some kind of official business there, and it looks Angelina was attending to some UNHCR duties while in the area. Jolie met with Colombian refugees living in Ecuadorian camps. You can see more photos of her trip here.
Angelina Jolie mixed business with pleasure on Sunday during a tour to the San Miguel River between Ecuador and Colombia. In her new role as the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Special Envoy, Jolie met with a 71-year-old woman in the village of Barranca Bermeja which hosts 50 families, 60 percent of which are Colombian refugees.
At one point she chatted to local bean farmer, Plinio, who is part of an agricultural project to encourage self sufficiency and improve nutrition in the community. He took her through the local jungle as he talked her through their struggles, while Angelina ditched her glamour for some wellies and a rucksack.
Angelina was dressed all in black and wore rubber boots for the muddy terrain and listened intently as the woman spoke and she made sure to take notes. The Oscar-winner got in the pleasure part of her trip by traveling with fianc Brad Pitt and their six children for a tour of the nearby Galapagos Islands.
During her work as UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, Jolie has ?conducted more than 40 field visits around the world? but will now focus on ?large-scale crises resulting in the mass displacement of people,” an announcement from the Agency said.
Angelina, 36, visited the region to meet up with the High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres. It is the first trip for the star since Guterres named her special envoy earlier this month,.
The Tomb Raider star met up with Ecuador’s Foreign Minister, Ricardo Patino, during her trip to the country. They were spotted walking together as they chatted and headed to a meeting in Quito on Sunday to promote the ‘Thanks Ecuador’ campaign in recognition of their help with refugees.
UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards said last week: ?Angelina Jolie is expected to focus on large-scale crises resulting in the mass displacement of people, to undertake advocacy and represent UNHCR and Mr. Guterres at the diplomatic level, engaging with relevant interlocutors on global displacement issues.?

Good for Angelina. She?s made very few UNHCR trips so far this year, and I always find WHERE she goes interesting – obviously, we hear more about African refugee crises, and the ticking time bomb of displaced Afghans and Pakistanis, and while Jolie has devoted a lot of time to the higher profile crises, she also brings attention to oft-forgotten or lesser-known crises too. These are all photos of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie through the years at the Cannes Film Festival. Because why not? For all of these engagement stories, I?m trying to use some older photos that we haven?t seen in a while, just for fun. Anyway, I?ve gotten a chance to read some of the tabloids this week, and they all have versions of Brad Pitt?s proposal. I think most versions have Brad spending months and months designing the ring and when he actually proposed, Angelina cried. But I think my favorite version is Us Weekly?s story – they basically say that Maddox is a little family-values conservative who guilt-tripped his parents into getting married because ?mommies and daddies should be married.? OMG. Santorum-speak!!!! Us Weekly?s sources also claim that Brad came right out and proposed to Angelina? in 2006. When she was pregnant with Shiloh! And Angelina refused him!
It wasn’t your average Jolie-Pitt family meeting. On a recent spring day, Brad Pitt gathered his six kids — Maddox, 10, Pax, 8, Zahara, 7, Shiloh, 5, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 3 — as he presented love Angelina Jolie with a very special present: A tablet-shaped diamond engagement ring — estimated at 16 carats and worth $500,000 — which he helped design with jeweler Robert Procop.
Pitt skipped the tradition of getting down on one knee, per a source, and merely presented the ring as a token of his unwavering love.
“Angelina cried and smiled” at the proposal, a confidante tells the new Us Weekly, out now. And the children, who had been extremely eager for their parents to wed after seven years together, were equally overjoyed, the source adds. “Everyone hugged once she put [the ring] on. She went around and showed it to each of the kids.”
As the world now knows, Jolie, 36, quietly debuted that long-awaited ring at an April 11 private viewing at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, with startling photos and a confirmation from jeweler Procop and then Pitt’s manager emerging two days later.
“Angie considers herself bonded to Brad for life,” adds the source.
The engagement fulfills one of Pitt?s long-held dreams – and a source gives all credit to Brad and Angelina?s oldest child, Maddox. ?Maddox wanted them to have a wedding? he was the most vocal in pushing for it? Brad pleaded with Angelina and said that everything else in the kids? lives is not normal, that they travel constantly, they are always in different houses and different schools. They needed to give the kids one thing in their life that is normal and they are asking for this. Brad told Angelina they should do it for the kids.?
It wasn?t the first time Pitt proposed to her, reveals the insider. ?He asked her to marry him when she was pregnant with Shiloh,? says the source. ?And she said no.?
But more recently, Jolie was taken off guard when Maddox urged her to take the traditional next step. ?Maddox told Angelina a mommy and daddy should be married. It broke Angie. She knew she had to do it then.?
As Brad designed Angelina?s ring, he was actually working for the kids? approval. ?brad would show them plans for the ring? he wanted the ring to be from the whole family, not just from him.?
As for making plans for the actual wedding, sources say it will likely take place in their French chateau either this summer or next. A source says, ?I don?t think Angelina figured that she would be getting married again? [but she sees it] as formalizing the agreement they already have? it?s no big deal to her.?
A friend also says, ?I don?t think Angelina has ever worried about her ability to keep a man, but what she has with Brad is very strong. They can still be hot and heavy. There is a great attraction. Angie is deep and thoughtful and undeniably sure of herself. I don?t think any man but Brad could really make it work.?

Yes, I see it clearly now. Maddox?s fingerprints are all over this!! It does sound like Maddox was working both parents separately, right? He was all, ?Dude, you need to do the right thing by my mom? to Brad and then to Angelina, Maddox was all, ?Girl, he loves you. The next time he asks, SAY YES.? That?s how I imagine Maddox speaks. Am I wrong? I want to know what Zahara thinks of all of this. You know she gave that 1980s ring an empress side-eye.
