When we first heard about Angelina Jolie?s potential involvement with Marvel?s The Eternals, many outlets theorized that Angelina would play a character named Sersi, who is something like an ageless goddess who lives among humans. But during the Comic Con presentation, they announced that Angelina would not be playing Sersi, she would be playing Thena. Considering that few people really grasp what The Eternals will actually be about and who the main characters really are, we had questions. Well, allow Pop Sugar to try to explain it:
The Maleficent: Mistress of Evil actress plays Thena, a character that has been around since 1976. There are multiple iterations of her character, so it will be interesting to see which storyline Marvel opts for in the film. If the movie follows the 2006 Eternals title, well likely see Thena with no recollection of her history as an immortal superhuman, due to reality warping by a character named Sprite. Instead, she ends up as a researcher at Stark Enterprises and marries a human named Thomas Eliot, later welcoming a son. Its not until the arrival of Ikaris (played by Richard Madden) that Thenas true past will be revealed.
So, what is her past? Originally, Thena is introduced as the warrior daughter of the Eternal Zuras, and their relationship has strong parallels to Zeus and Athena. Shes seen bopping around Athens, and is known for her impressive intellect thanks to studying with mortal and Eternals teachers.

So Thena is a sideways version of Athena, goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill. Awesome. It also sounds like Angelina will be playing a sideways version of Wonder Woman-with-amnesia, right? Like, she?s a super-powerful goddess but she doesn?t remember that she?s a powerful goddess so she just marries some dude and has a baby and then Richard Madden shows up and she?s like ?oh wait I don?t have amnesia anymore?? Fk it, I?d watch that.
Here are some photos of Angelina out shopping with Vivienne and Zahara this week at the Century City Mall. I love how often Angelina has to take her daughters shopping at various malls around LA. Also: this sack dress is like the mother of all sack dresses.

Angelina Jolie has been in Paris for the past three or four days. I think the trip is half-business, half-pleasure. A few days ago, she shot a new ad for Guerlain, and the paparazzi got some shots of her in lingerie, looking tousled and beautiful on a balcony or something. Then they photographed her out and about in Paris this week, and the photos are very pretty. She stepped out solo in white slacks and a pale grey sweater which I WANT, it?s so gorgeous. And then she caused, like, an international incident when she spent time with Jacqueline Bisset.
Bisset is actually Angelina?s godmother Bisset knew her late mother, Marcheline Bertrand, and I think Bisset knew/knows Jon Voight too. Bisset and Angelina seem to check in with each other every few years. While Bisset is English, I believe she lives in France most of the time, if not all the time. Maybe Angelina called her godmother up for lunch while she (Angelina) was in town, I really don?t know. Angelina and Jacqueline have hung out twice in two days, and on Tuesday, when they exited the hotel, a huge group of people swarmed around them. It was all very epic. Bisset looks amazing, right? Angelina looks great too I love her summer maxi dress. It?s such a good dress that I suspect she didn?t pick it out herself.
You know what I wonder? I wonder if Angelina Jolie was doing more than a Guerlain shoot while she was in Paris. We?re in early July, it?s conceivable that was doing a photoshoot for an October-issue magazine in Paris, right? Maleficent: Mistress of Evil comes out in October! Perhaps a Vogue shoot? I wonder if Mario Testino or Annie Leibovitz is in Paris this week too.

As we discussed this week, Brad Pitt skipped his daughter Shiloh?s 13th birthday. He was in Cannes last week, and he?s in Venice this week with his artist friends. Angelina has been living full-time in LA for a couple of years now minus a stay in London to work on Maleficent and she and the kids really have put down some roots there. Anyway, I tend to think Shiloh has always taken after Angelina in her sort of fearlessness and eagerness for adventure. Shiloh seems like an extremely well-adjusted kid given the level of fame of her parents and the traveling-circus bubble of the Jolie-Pitt family?s life. Shiloh has always been a tomboy, eager to skateboard and play soccer and do whatever her brothers are doing. And so Angelina organized a special treat for Shiloh?s birthday: an hours-long adventure at The Basement LA.
Angelina Jolie knows how to host a party! The actress threw an epic bash in Los Angeles on Monday, to celebrate daughter Shiloh Jolie-Pitts 13th birthday.
The party went down at The Basement LA, where guests got to explore four different escape rooms, watch magicians perform and grub out on custom birthday cakes. Shilohs dad, Brad Pitt, was not in attendance, but all five of her siblings Maddox, 17, Pax, 15, Zahara, 14, and 10-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox were there, along with a group of friends, to help celebrate the birthday girl.
An eyewitness told ET that everyone was in good spirits, and spent hours finding their way out of all the escape rooms.

I looked at The Basement?s site it?s an immersive experience with live actors in which you have to figure out ways to ?escape? various physical and intellectual traps. I was trying to think back to what my ideal birthday party would have been like at 13 probably something involving a good cake and Pearl Jam? But obviously, Shiloh is different. Those escape rooms would probably give me, a grown-ass adult, nightmares for months. But I bet Shiloh LOVED it.

Last Friday, Angelina Jolie was in New York to attend meetings at the United Nations. She also gave a keynote address to committee, and her speech was all about women?s rights and the need to focus on women in warfare and conflict. Her speech was well-received, and basically, she seems perfectly at home at the UN, perfectly at home with speech-making and activism and problem-solving behind the scenes. We also know that Angelina carries several titles now: she?s a dame, she?s a professor, she?s a Special Envoy for the UNHCR, and she?s arguably a saint too. But would Angelina ever want the title of Senator Jolie or Congresswoman Jolie or President Jolie? Why not? She spoke to People Magazine about all of that more:
Whether she would ever run for office: ?Never say never. [But ] right now I am looking to others for leadership.?
Her work with women in conflict: ?I try to speak for what I believe in,? Jolie says of her causes. Currently, one of those causes is that the laws that treat women around the world like ?second class citizens? need to change. ?If you look across the world, there are far too many women and girls who are not only not seeing progress, their rights are slipping away from them,? Jolie says. But Jolie adds that the laws don?t just need to change. ?We also have to enforce them. So one of the things we are putting forward now is a proposal for a permanent international body to investigate war crimes, including mass rape and other sexual and gender-based violence.?
Her PSVI initiative, seven years later: ?There is now a lot more awareness and discussion and many more countries have made commitments. For example, 156 countries have pledged not to include amnesties for rape when they are negotiating peace agreements. It is hard to believe, but peace treaties routinely grant immunity to people who?ve carried out the most disgusting violent crimes against civilians. So we have to make sure all those countries live up to that commitment.?
She?s made lifelong friends along the way: ?The second UN mission I went on, to Cambodia, I met two women from England and France, Katie and Mimi, who were working with UNHCR. Loung was there as well, and we did a UN and HALO mission. We have all been friends ever since, for coming up on twenty years now. I feel very blessed in my work to have the opportunity to meet so many extraordinary people who spend their lives dedicated to others.?

I kind of love that she talked about the friends she?s made along the way with her UNHCR. She gave an interview once I think with CNN? where she made an aside about how she doesn?t have many friends. The haters threw a party about that, like it wasn?t just some random aside she made without thinking. She has friends, they just aren?t performative Instagram-friendships. They?re built on substantive work and shared humanitarian goals. As for running for officeI mean, I doubt it. I don?t think she would run for office here in America. But in Britain? Why not.

My contrarian nature means that I generally don?t feel the hype for whatever big extravaganza movie is coming out. If I see a Marvel movie eventually, I?m fine, but if I miss one or several, I?m fine with that too. But I?m genuinely hyped for the rumor that Angelina Jolie is in talks for her first superhero movie. We learned that Jolie is in talks for The Eternals, which is part of Marvel?s latest phase. The film will be directed by Chloe Zhao, which is probably one of the attractions for Angelina, the chance to work with an esteemed female director. As many of you pointed out, being ?in talks? isn?t a sure thing, and obviously there are several actors who were in talks for Marvel movies and nothing happened. But the more I?m reading about The Eternals, the more I think Angelina would be amazing in the lead role. The Hollywood Reporter had a lengthy primer on the comic and mythology, and the role of Sersi, which is the role Angelina is likely in talks to play.
While details on the film have been locked up tighter than Odins vault, The Eternals, based on the epic saga by comic book legend Jack Kirby, focuses on immortal superpowered beings created by the Celestials, the cosmic giants seen in the Infinity Stones sequence in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). Zhaos film is said to be led by Sersi and Ikaris, two Eternals whose love story rests at the center of an eons-spanning conflict. Marvel had no comment on who Jolie might play, but given that shes the first actor to be cast, it seems likely that shes up for the transmutation-powered Sersi. Jolie also looks a great deal like many artists depiction of the character. But who is Sersi? And what does Jolies casting tell us about the film?
Unlike the previous films that have made up the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Eternals is based around largely unknown entities, even for most comic book readers. This unknown quality plus the fact that Marvel Comics hasnt made much effort in reprinting Kirbys series or key appearances of the characters (yet), adds a level of excitement and novelty to Zhaos feature. As a property thats more situated in the realm of sci-fi and fantasy than superhero yarns, learning about the Eternals is akin to taking a deep-dive into J.R.R. Tolkiens Middle-earth history or George R.R. Martins Westeros and Essos When it comes to the Celestials, the Eternals and their evil counterparts the Deviants (Thanos race), this is heavy Marvel mythology, the building blocks of the universe, and far more complex than anything weve seen Marvel Studios adapt thus far.
Created by Jack Kirby, Sersi first appeared in Strange Tales No. 109 (1963), with the name spelled Circe, then later as Sersi in The Eternals No. 3 (1976). The distinction in spelling highlights a very important aspect of The Eternals comic book history. While Greek gods and goddesses exist in the Marvel Universe, they would often let the Olympia-based Eternals represent their physical forms for the humans on Earth, hence many of the Eternals sharing names similar to their Greek counterparts. This distinction sounds like something the MCU will merge and just make the Eternals the inspiration for the Greek Pantheon, like the Asgardians were the basis for the Norse Gods. The comics have already done some of this synthesizing. Sersi inspired the poet Homer, who included her under the name Circe in The Odyssey in which she turned men into swine. Because of her powers to manipulate matter and rearrange molecular structures, she was often seen as a witch rather than a result of alien experimentation, allowing her to move across comic book genres.
While most of the Eternals eventually returned to the cosmos in search of their larger destiny, Sersi remained on Earth, fascinated with its people and customs. She involved herself in key moments in history, lived in ancient Rome and Camelot, fought alongside Thor and the Vikings in the gods youth and later joined the Avengers.
Having lived for millennia, Sersi has taken on many roles on Earth and has changed her personality as shes seen fit, taking the most out of her immortal existence. This worldliness and interest in alleviating human conflict and suffering falls in line with Jolies own humanitarian and conservation effortsIts impossible to capture the massive potential and mythology of The Eternals through one character and casting choice. But Jolies involvement at least gives us a better idea of whats coming down the road post-Avengers: Endgame. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has promised a very different MCU after April 26, and if Jolies casting and Sersis eons-spanning history and mythology is any indication, Marvels storytelling and casting is only growing in ambition.

The reason this is so appealing to me as a Jolie fan/stan is the idea of Jolie as an ageless goddess who moves through the mortal world, dipping in and out of history for millennia. Angelina as Sersi in Camelot, or ancient Rome, or the Renaissance? Come on. I would stan this franchise.

A few weeks ago, Angelina Jolie walked the red carpet at the LA premiere of Disney?s Dumbo. She brought her four youngest kids too. Jolie doesn?t have a role in Dumbo, but she?d worked with some of the special effects team before, and as I pointed out at the time, Angelina is a Disney Lady now. In addition to Maleficent and the sequel (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil!!), she?s working for/with Disney on several other projects too. I also said in that Dumbo post: ?I expected her to end up in a Star Wars movie and/or a Marvel movie.? Well, guess what? Chica got a Marvel movie.
Angelina Jolie is getting ready to make her first foray into the world of superhero movies. The Oscar-winning actress is in talks to star in Marvel Studios The Eternals, a superhero team adventure feature being directed by Chloe Zhao.
Jolie has chosen the Marvel project based on the Jack Kirby-created title about superpowered and near-immortal beings known as Eternals and a more monstrous offshoot known as the Deviants that were created by the cosmic beings called Celestials.
While details about the movie are being kept under wraps, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that one aspect to the story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans. It is unclear who Jolie will play. Marvel had no comment.
While this will be Jolie?s first superhero movie, it is not her first comic book movie? she starred in the 2007 adaptation of Mark Millar?s Wanted.

La Jolie + Marvel = something I can get behind. Sorry, Avengers. Of course, I don?t know anything about The Eternals and whether this is actually a good property, but if it?s being produced by Marvel and they?re throwing their money behind it, that means it will make a billion dollars and Angelina will be the first lady of Disney/Marvel. One of the smartest moves Angelina Jolie ever made for her career was getting in bed with Disney. She seemed to surprise herself by enjoying the process of making and promoting the first Maleficent movie, and after her split from Brad Pitt, Angelina has been doing a lot of stuff with Disney, like Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, and voice work on The One and Only Ivan. I expected her to end up in a Star Wars movie and/or a Marvel movie.
Anyway, Angelina is a Disney Lady now, so she came out to support Disney?s latest, the live-action Dumbo, directed by Tim Burton. It?s weird Tim Burton and Angelina have never worked together, right? They seem like? they would get along. Angelina doesn?t have many connections to the actors in the film, but apparently the Disney peeps involved with Dumbo are the same ones who worked on Maleficent. Oh? Colin Farrell is in the film. He and Angelina used to deal with each other, very briefly, fifteen years ago. Cough. Maybe they are dealing with each other again. Cough.
It?s also possible that Angelina just wanted to be a cool mom and take her kids to see Dumbo. Angelina brought her four youngest children to the premiere, and they all posed on the carpet. Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox were all there. Maddox and Pax are too old to be enchanted by a tale of a magical flying elephant, sob. I don?t have an ID on Angelina?s dress, but it?s beautiful. It looks sort of familiar, like she?s possible worn it before, years ago.

Angelina Jolie stepped out this weekend with her son Pax. They went shopping on Melrose Avenue, which is sort of an old-school pap stroll. What I always think is interesting is that Angelina Jolie has a certain image, which is largely self-created. That image is badass action heroine/globe-trotting humanitarian/studio-director. She?s all of those things. But she?s also a woman who has spent most of her life in LA. She grew up there. She presumably spent part of her adolescence shopping on Melrose with her mom. She?s raising her kids partially in LA, and she?s continuing that multigenerational LA life.
Anyway, people were making a big deal last week about how Angelina was probably very upset about Brad Pitt attending Jennifer Aniston?s birthday party, and all of the subsequent PR shenanigans about Brad & Jen 2.0. I honestly doubt Angelina gives a sh-t, just like I never believed she gave a sh-t about Neri Oxman or Charlize Theron or whoever else Brad was trying to date. Again, she dumped him. She?s living her life.
Also: remember when Angelina invented white blouses and trench coats?? LOL. I love her whole outfit here, even if I think that white blouse makes her look a tad preggo. Wouldn?t that be something? She?s not pregnant, of course. She?s just gained a little weight and it looks so good on her.

In this coming week?s Gossip With Celebitchy podcast, I admitted something dreadful: if I could ?borrow? any celebrity?s style, I realistically would borrow Angelina Jolie?s style vibes. This is not an endorsement of her entire closet or every single thing she?s ever worn. It?s just that Angelina wears a lot of black and she likes a good trouser or regular pair of pants. She likes a simple blouse and a well-cut coat. She keeps it really simple, and I appreciate that. My vibe is pretty simple too, but Angelina?s vibe is better. It?s goth-lite, with sack dresses and a vague ?70s feel. These photos made me think of our podcast conversation!
Angelina stepped out this weekend with Shiloh. They went to Petco and of course they wound up buying a pet. The pet container looks too small for a puppy and too big for something like a hamster or gerbil. My guess is that they got a rabbit or a kitten. And before everybody climbs up Angie?s butt about ?buying an animal? rather than adopting one from a shelter? my local Petco has an arrangement with the shelters, so they bring in a supply of shelter kitties and puppies and you can buy them there, in-store. And you?re paying for their shots and spay/neuter. My guess is that Angelina?s local Petco has a similar arrangement, at least with cats and dogs. But, as I said, this box is rabbit-sized too. Shiloh seems like the kind of kid who wants a rabbit, right? I imagine her practicing magic tricks and a rabbit would definitely be part of her act.
As I said, I like Angelina?s whole style vibe here the black blouse is really cute, and I like that she?s sprinkled with some very delicate-looking jewelry simple rings, a thin bracelet, small earrings and a long pendant necklace of some variety. The boots are my favorite part!
PS It just occurred to me that this could be a snake or a lizard or something? But do they put snakes and lizards in these kinds of boxes?

I recently read a Twitter thread about the differences between Generation X, Xennials and Millennials, and now I?m thinking about it with regards to Angelina Jolie. Angelina has always been rather low-tech, hasn?t she? Angelina is Gen-X, but so many of her references feel so ?70s. She prefers a less modern approach to life. She has a iPhone of course, but I bet she still calls people on her landline. She still shops in malls, which few people do at this point, and she encourages her kids to do crafts. I bet she has a typewriter.
Anyway, these are some photos of Angelina making yet another trip to a mall. She took Knox, Zahara and an assistant-type to the Century City Westfield Mall over the weekend. She looked like any other mom, I guess. Black slacks, black boots, black coat and a simple white blouse. Zahara is such a fashionista, right? So fashion-forward. I wish Zahara would really start styling her mom.
I?ve missed seeing Angelina during the awards season, but I wonder if she?ll come out for the Oscars, as a presenter? She doesn?t have anything immediate to promote, and Brad Pitt actually produced two of the films which are likely to get some Oscar nominations (If Beale Street Could Talk and Beautiful Boy). I?d say that Brad is more likely to make a surprise appearance at the hostless Oscars, especially since he?s been doing some low-key campaigning for the films he?s produced, but you never know. I could also see Angelina stopping by.
