Continuing their work on the upcoming film “Eat, Pray, Love,” Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem were spotted swimming in the ocean on the coast of Bali yesterday (October 25).
The “Pretty Woman” actress and her hunky costar looked to be enjoying themselves as they laughed and joked in between scenes, making the most of their tropical surroundings.
And though things seem to be going well with the shoot, the residents of the mountain town of Ubud are complaining that they got paid less than other locals for the use of their land.
Tjok Raka Kertiyasa, the royal prince of Ubud, told press, “Villagers do not understand why some people are getting paid more than the entire village, which has so far been given 10million rupiah ($1000) collectively. It’s about rights, not greediness. As the head of the community, I have been invited to share my wisdom with both sides, not just with the community.”

Back in August, when Eat, Pray, Love was just about to start filming in New York, several prominent Hindu leaders took to the media to complain that the book - and now the movie - was in danger of showing a bastardized version of Hinduism in an attempt to rebrand the ancient religion as some trendy New Age crap. The leaders were doing some kind of pre-emtive strike against the movie, which at the time had yet to begin filming in India. My thoughts last month werethat if you found the book offensive to your religion, you would probably find the film offensive. The source material is what should be criticized, in my opinion, rather than the film.
Of course, I thought that before the film crew closed down a Hindu temple for filming right before Navratri. And before Julia Roberts hired a reported 350-person large security staff to protect her and her family. 350 security people? Seriously, Julia? Is she creating a human barricade around her hotel? The BBC has more:
Villagers in India have accused the Hollywood superstar, Julia Roberts, of interrupting one of their most important religious festivals.
They say that her huge film set in the town of Pataudi near Delhi has prevented them from celebrating the Navratri religious festival.
The Pretty Woman star used the Hari Mandir temple to shoot scenes of her new film, Eat, Pray, Love. Neither Ms Roberts nor the film makers has commented on the claims.
A spokeswoman for Sony Pictures Entertainment, which owns the production company making the film, told the BBC they did not want to say anything about the allegations.
Some locals are unhappy the actress is using the temple during the festival of Navratri, marked by Hindus through nine days of worship of the Goddess Durga.
Police say they are under strict orders to stop devotees from entering the temple while filming is under way because of security considerations.
The restrictions come at a sensitive time because a number of Hindu festivals take place in the autumn. One worshipper said: “It’s the holiest time of the year and we are being stopped from visiting our own temple. It’s outrageous.”
Eyebrows have also been raised at the scale of the security operation to guard the Hollywood star - some newspapers have described it as “presidential”.
Reports say she is also using a bullet proof car and a helicopter for protection.
Up until now, the star of Erin Brockovich and Notting Hill has been seen as one of the West’s most “Hindu-friendly” actors, even sporting a bindi spot during a visit to India earlier this year.
In Eat, Pray, Love, Ms Roberts plays a woman hoping to find herself in Hindu spirituality after experiencing a traumatic divorce. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Elizabeth Gilbert.

As much as I would love to give Julia a good thump for the closing of the Hindu temple, it?s not really her fault. I lay the blame at the producers who organized the film shoot at the temple during an important Hindu festival, and I blame whatever genius Hindu committee or organization for letting the film crew in. Someone had to give their permission, and that?s the person to blame. I will thump Julia for the 350-person security brigade. For goodness sake, she?s not shooting a film in the Northwest frontier, it?s just Delhi. Live a little, Julia. Mix with the locals for a day, it seriously won?t kill you.

Coming off a lengthy shoot in New York City, Julia Roberts was spotted in Rome, Italy today (August 26) to continue filming “Eat, Pray, Love.”
The “Pretty Woman” actress looked to be in good spirits as she arrived at the Piazza Navona to find a plethora of fans and paparazzi waiting for her.
And Julia was looking absolutely fabulous as she waved to her admirers, sporting a grey jacket overtop a beautiful swirly-printed dress with black sunglasses.
“Eat, Pray, Love” is about a happily married woman who realizes her life needs to go in a different direction, and after a painful divorce, she takes off on a round-the-world journey. It is based on the memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert.

Out for another day’s work, Julia Roberts was all smiles on the set of “Eat, Pray, Love” in New York City on Thursday (August 20).
The “Pretty Woman” actress was on-hand for what’s the last day of filming in the Big Apple – as the cast will soon be heading to shoot scenes in Italy, India and Indonesia.
Aside from “Eat, Pray, Love”, Miss Roberts also recently put in work on the Garry Marshall directed romantic comedy “Valentine’s Day”.
Boasting a star-studded cast including Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway and Ashton Kutcher, the flick finds “intertwining couples and singles in Los Angeles breaking-up and making-up based on the pressures and expectations of Valentine’s Day.”

Continuing work on her new flick, Julia Roberts was spotted walking around the “Eat, Pray, Love” movie set in downtown Tribeca on Tuesday (August 18).
Reportedly headed to Rome, Italy to shoot scenes overseas later this week, the “Pretty Woman” cutie’s newest project is scheduled for release in 2011.
And Julia has to be hoping to strike gold at the box office with her new film – as recent reports tell that she was originally slated to star in “The Proposal” – a spot she lost to Sandra Bullock after demanding too much money.
Making for a tough career move, insiders point out that “The Proposal” pulled in $151 million at the box office – much more than Julia’s recent ventures.

Many people described Elizabeth Gilbert?s bestselling travel/self-help memoir Eat, Pray, Love as good or great, insightful, interesting and funny. Many others described it as silly, narcissistic, hokey, a new-agey piece of trash, neo-colonialist, disastrous, cloying and according to the NY Post, ?the worst in Western fetishization of Eastern thought and culture, assured in its answers to existential dilemmas that have confounded intellects greater than hers.? In case you don?t worship at the Temple of Oprah, Eat, Pray, Love is about Elizabeth Gilbert?s year-long journey to Italy, India and Indonesia after a bitter divorce. She eats in Italy, meditates in India, and has some kind of romantic liaison in Indonesia. The book was released in 2006, and got a huge bump in 2007 (when Oprah selected it for her book club) and remains a big bestseller. The movie rights were snapped up by? Plan B, Brad Pitt?s production company. Julia Roberts quickly signed on to star - and it?s filming right now. The film production is about to make it?s way to India very soon - which is what has people worried.
According to Page Six, it seems the backlash against the book and the film production has already begun in India. Hindu scholars are worried that Julia will attempt to make ancient devotional duties somehow pretty and Hollywood-y, and many fear the whole film will ?incorrectly depict? Hindus and the Hindu faith:
INDIAN yogis and Hindu leaders are in a huff over fears that Julia Roberts’ upcoming movie, “Eat, Pray, Love,” will bastardize their religion and portray yoga as a crock of New Age mumbo jumbo.
Roberts is in New York this month filming scenes for the screen version of Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling memoir, which details the author’s efforts to find spiritual enlightenment in Italy, India and Indonesia after she’d gone through a nasty divorce.
But shooting is scheduled in India for the third week of September, and has sparked concerns about whether the film will portray Hinduism and yoga authentically.
Most prominent among the skeptics is Rajan Zed, the head of the Universal Society of Hinduism, who’s led Hindu prayers in the US Senate. He said in a recent interview, “Hinduism and its belief system are quite often misunderstood and incorrectly depicted outside India.”
Zed added, “The people of India will be anxious to see how perfectly Roberts does her job of cleaning ashram floors as a part of her devotional duty, trying to recite 182- verse Sanskrit chant, and going through grueling hours of meditation, while being feasted on by mosquitoes.”
Producers have already disclosed that they won’t shoot “Eat, Pray, Love” at the same ashram where Gilbert studied, but instead will use one near Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, which is near the hotel where Roberts will stay.
The book was derided by The Post’s Maureen Callahan in December of 2007 as “narcissistic New Age reading” and “the worst in Western fetishization of Eastern thought and culture, assured in its answers to existential dilemmas that have confounded intellects greater than hers.”
Javier Bardem, James Franco and Billy Crudup are also on board to star. A rep for Sony said the studio had no comment.

I didn?t read the book and I have no desire to see the film, so my general feeling is ?meh? on all sides. Do I think Hindu scholars have every right to worry, and to speak publicly about their concerns? Yep. Do I think the film?s portrayal in general of Hinduism (and Julia?s performance specifically) will be offensive? My guess is that if the book offended you, the film will offend you. If you thought the book was amazing, the film will probably be your wet dream (I imagine the Oprah audience, a sea of white, middle-aged, upper-middle-class women, screaming ?JULIA!!?). You know what I mean? If anything?s offensive, it?s the source material, not the film. In any case, by making a big deal about the film, the Hindu scholars are ensuring that the India section will be more watered-down, aiming to offend no one.

This is a weird, strange little gossip blurb out of Star Magazine. It seems that Julia Roberts and Shirley MacLaine are working together on the romantic-comedy Valentine?s Day, which basically stars half of Hollywood. I think it?s supposed to be like a Love, Actually-esque multi-storied romance, but I don?t know who is romancing who in the film. So far, we?ve seen on-set photos of everyone from Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Garner, Eric Dane, and Jessica Alba, and the IMDB credits also include Jessica Biel, Anne Hathaway, Ashton Kutcher, Taylor Lautner, Patrick Dempsey, Topher Grace, Queen Latifah, Jamie Foxx, and Taylor Swift.
According to Star, Julia and Shirley MacLaine have some scenes together, and when they were through filming, the crew gave Julia a champagne toast. Shirley was not toasted:
Julia Robert is the toast of Tinseltown. After wrapping her scenes for the upcoming film Valentine?s Day, she received a standing ovation and champagne from the cast and crew.
Just Julia?s costar, Shirley MacLaine, didn?t get the same reception.

I guess I could buy it. Shirley MacLaine had a reputation for being a difficult actress to work with, I suppose she could still be like that. What I find weird is that with this large of a cast, and this many big names, they can probably only be working for about a week at most. How big of a bitch can you really be in a week?

Hard at work on her latest project, Julia Roberts was spotted arriving on the set of “Eat, Pray, Love” in Midtown Manhattan earlier today (August 3).
The “My Best Friend’s Wedding” actress looked focused as she chatted with crew members prior to filming a few scenes.
And according to a report, “Public Enemies” actor Billy Crudup will be joining the already stellar cast of the movie, based on the bestselling memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert.
The film chronicles the author’s travels around the world in a journey to restore her spirit after a difficult divorce. Javier Bardem and Richard Jenkins also star.
