I?m pretty excited that the Brangelina Drought is over. I was Brangelina-Parched. Angelina has a new interview with The New York Times, the paper of record and one of her favorite outlets. It?s funny to me that Angelina truly saved her best quotes for the NYT, as opposed to Vogue. Vogue would have bent over backwards to accommodate Angelina?s every wish to frame certain issues in certain ways, but maybe that?s the point ? Angelina doesn?t need a media outlet to ?frame? any issue for her. She can speak for herself. And while she wouldn?t say one word about Amy Pascal and Scott Rudin to Vogue, she actually discusses the whole situation with the NYT, the paper of record. You can read the full NYT piece here. Highlights:
Her expectations for ?By the Sea?: ?I know some people are going to hate it. Some are going to like it. But it was important to me to feel like an artist again.?
Whether getting married changed anything: ?It was just a nice thing. For me, the big moment was when [we] signed the [joint adoption] papers for Maddox and Zahara. That was a decision to parent together, to commit to being a part of each other?s lives for the rest of my life. So [marriage] wasn?t close in comparison. In a way, it was very casual? The ceremony was in France, but we had to do things legally in California. One day I was in the edit room, and [Brad] was doing something and an assistant said, ?You have to sign some papers.? So we came back and between meetings we were told, ?Here?s your license.? Then someone said, ?The judge is outside.? We both said, ?What do you mean, the judge is outside?? Then the judge came in, this lovely guy, and at some point, Brad said, ?Shouldn?t we be standing up?? The judge said, ?No.? Then suddenly we realized we were married, in the most unceremonial way possible.?
At first, she didn?t want to star in ?By the Sea?: ?There were lots of scenes I wanted to change or cut. I realized it was going to be me [naked] in that bathtub. But I told myself, put all of that aside. Like, you can?t change or cut this scene because you?ve had a mastectomy, or because we?re married and people are going to analyze this or that. That would be cheating.?
On sexism & being one of the few prominent female directors: ?I just think that sometimes people in the business focus on the fact that you?re a minority. I don?t want people saying, ?Should we get a female director?? I want to hear, ?Should we get a great director for this movie?? But I?m the first female director that Brad?s ever worked with. That doesn?t seem right when you think about it?Sexism is part of every industry and must be addressed. But I try not to focus on the negative but the positive side of what we can bring. I want to support other women because of the opportunities I?ve had ? and I?ve had a lot of opportunities. What I try as a female director is to do the best job I can and in the meantime bring attention to as many other female directors and writers as I can. Right now I am producing ?The Breadwinner,? an animated film about Afghanistan. Nora Twomey is the director.?
On Brad?s experience being directed by a woman/his wife: ?I?m not just a woman, but a writer-director. We?re also husband and wife. I think it was doubly hard. We know certain things about each other. At first it was a little uncomfortable. You want to be careful what button you press and what you don?t. At the same time, he later said he felt like he could be the most open in his acting, because he trusted I was genuinely there to help him give the best performance.?
The Sony Hack emails: ?I didn?t read any of them?.Someone told me. There are certain things that bother me and certain things that don?t. Personal attacks on me? I think I?m just so used to it. Honestly, my first instinct was that I was worried about Amy. I had someone call her and ask if she was O.K. Not because I?m a saint, but because I think we have to look at the bigger picture. She?s got kids. I knew it was going to unravel for her.?
Whether she would ever do a rom-com: ?I love comedies. But I?m never asked to do anything even self-mocking. I tried to do comedy when I was younger. It didn?t work. I don?t think I?m very funny.?

The Sony Hack answer is? whoa. She loaded a lot into just a few sentences. I think my favorite quote now is ?Not because I?m a saint, but because I think we have to look at the bigger picture.? Damn, Angie! Way to give your detractors a wink. But I love that Angelina heard about the emails and Angie ?had someone call? Pascal. As in, Angelina wasn?t going to call Pascal herself. Because the emails really were that bad.
At the end of the interview, she?s asked if she?s worried that the audience will think By the Sea is a self-portrait, and Angelina says that she and Brad don?t share the particular ?issues? with their characters but it is ?true? that ?we have terrible fights, are imperfect, have insecurities and can be depressed and emotional? We have problems, arguments. We are two very human, flawed people.? Which means that at least one time, in real life, Brad really has cried and stormed out of the house while the Leg of Doom cackled at the window.

OMG. Here are photos of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt at the WSJ. Magazine 2015 Innovator Awards in NYC last night. They are wearing his-and-hers Tom Ford. Is this the first time Angelina has worn Tom Ford? Maybe. Update: she’s worn Tom Ford at least once before. Even though she has about a million black dresses and gowns, I really like this one. It?s flattering, I like the velvet and the back detail and her skin looks great. She doesn?t look so tired here. But Brad still looks exhausted! Jewelry note: Angelina?s earrings are 30 CARAT Lorraine Schwartz diamonds with a ?rose cut.? Do you think she borrowed those or does she own them?
Angelina was recognized by the Wall Street Journal as their ?2015 Entertainment/Film Innovator.? The WSJ. Magazine just released their cover story too, but I?ll be covering the quotes and photos in a separate post because OMG. At the WSJ event, Angelina reunited with her Good Shepherd director, Robert DeNiro. They greeted each other with kisses and DeNiro actually looked pleased to see her.
During Brad and Angelina?s Q&A session two nights ago, Brad was asked about what it was like being directed by Angelina. He said, in part: ?Angie and I have such history now ? 10 years ? we?ve been through many things .?.?. She doesn?t have to say anything for me to know what she?s feeling. I certainly know when she doesn?t like a take.?

This is a surprise! At least to me. I heard something about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt doing a Q&A for By the Sea in NYC, but I didn?t realize there would be photos from outside the event/screening. So here you go ? the Brangelunacy is upon us! So many new Jolie-Pitt photos! Huzzah!
I cannot find the ID on Angelina?s dress. Everyone is describing it as ?vintage style,? but could it possibly be real vintage? Anyway, it?s got that baggy, slightly sacky vibe that I know she likes and it?s got a ?70s vibe too, which fits with the movie. I?m surprised to see her in a real color! She does black and neutrals too often. I enjoy her hair this dark, but my one complaint is that she looks pretty tired. She and Brad need to take a good nap together.
As for Brad? I?m still grateful that he?s in a relatively clean-shaven phase these days. I honestly don?t mind Brad?s scarves, because unlike Johnny ?Scarfy? Depp, Brad?s scarves are not attached to five necklaces, ten rings, a rat-chewed hat, metal chains on his pants and an emergency scarf in the back pants pocket. Brad?s occasional scarves seem more like ?he?s being dressed personally by Tom Ford.?

Has Brad Pitt given any major interviews since he married Angelina Jolie last year? I don?t really remember him sitting down with a magazine or doing some in-depth 60 Minutes piece at all. So? I?m prepared to say that Brad probably gave a mega-exclusive to the as-yet-unreleased new issue of V Magazine. Is it a cover story? Apparently, at least according to Entertainment Tonight ? you can see some screenshots here. All we really know is that the piece will be released mid-November and that Brad is talking about what it?s like being directed by his lover/wife/mother of his children.
More than a year after saying “I do,” Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are still crazy about each other. The Oscar-winning actor opens up to V Magazine about working under the direction of his Oscar-winning wife on the romance drama By the Sea, opening Nov. 13.
“It’s surprising how much I enjoy the direction of my wife,” he tells V. “She’s decisive, incredibly intuitive, and might I say sexy at her post. I trust her with my life.”
The couple play spouses in the movie with Angelina taking the role of Vanessa, a former dancer in mid-1970s France, who travels the country with her husband Roland, an American writer, played by Brad. In real life, the couple spends a good amount of time at home raising their six children, and Brad gave one more reason for what makes him a hot dad.
“At the end of the day, we get to be parents, greeting our lovely, crazy children and talking about their day, making sure they brush their teeth,” Brad says.

Brad Pitt thinks it?s sexy when Angelina orders him around, basically. He enjoys a woman in charge. He likes to watch her work. I really do wonder what that says about their sex life. Everyone always believes that Angelina is a vamp, a man-eater, a dominant. Is she really like that though? Is Brad happy enough to let Angelina take charge EVERYWHERE?

As we discussed on Friday, Angelina Jolie covers the November issue of Vogue Magazine. I didn?t call this at all, because I honestly forgot about By the Sea and I kind of thought it was such a small film that the Jolie-Pitts wouldn?t be promoting it that much. But even for a tiny little film that will only get a limited release, Angelina still scored a Vogue cover. This probably means she won?t get a Vanity Fair cover, or maybe they?re saving that for Brad for the December issue (you never know!). Now that I know the Jolie-Pitts are going big for By the Sea, I do wonder what other covers Angelina will do. Marie Claire? Elle? W Magazine?
Anyway, now that I?ve gotten a chance to really sit and enjoy the entire Vogue interview, I have additional thoughts. There?s a lot of cute stuff about the kids in there, like how Pax was really nervous to meet Aung San Suu Kyi, and how Angelina always refers to Zahara as ?Z? (some of Angelina?s friends and colleagues at the United Nations refer to Jolie as ?AJ? too). There?s a story about Angelina taking Shiloh to meet refugees and seeing her 9-year-old on the floor, taking her own notes as she met refuge kids. There?s stuff about how she came to write By the Sea, which is described as a tale of grief and bereavement. Jolie wrote it after her mother passed away in 2007. And of course there?s a lot about her humanitarian work, with most of the quotes coming from other people about how dedicated she is, how smart, how focused. And here?s a significant part about her future film projects, including some details about Cleopatra:
She has also been trying to develop a film about the Kenya-based wildlife conservationist Richard Leakey. Here, you see how the worlds she straddles offer her different routes to the same end. If the project doesn?t pan out, she says, ?I can work with Leakey and do just as much good.? And then there?s Cleopatra, based on Stacy Schiff?s 2010 history. It was the movie at the center of the scandal of the hacked Sony emails, in which it was described as a ?$180m ego bath? for Angelina. (?I was enraged,? says Eric Roth, the screenwriter on the project, ?but she has enough confidence that she didn?t engage in any of it.?) As Jolie Pitt says, ?It?s a hard one to get right. It needs to be about something other than sex and jewelry. She was a very complicated leader of a country.? She?s interested in Cleopatra as an astute politician, says Roth, in her humanity, how she relates to her children and the people of Egypt; you can see why Angelina would want this role.

While Angelina?s idea of Cleopatra sounds interesting and something that would be great-on-film, I still don?t think it should or will be made. Not after the Sony Hack. Not after all of the sh-t that was said. And I love that Angelina still isn?t saying a word about the Sony Hack emails. Bless her.

Ooooooh, I actually forgot that By the Sea is coming out in a month. Angelina Jolie covers the November issue of Vogue to promote the film that she wrote, directed and stars in with Brad Pitt. The Annie Liebovitz editorial also features the whole Jolie-Pitt clan, because AMAZING. You can see the slideshow here and the full interview here. Anna Wintour really loves Jolie, this is like Angelina’s fifth or sixth cover I think.
Doing it all for By the Sea: ?The director was very focused. The actress was unstable. And the writer was deeply confused. This is the only film I?ve done that is completely based on my own crazy mind.” For years, she says, she and Brad called the script for By the Sea ?the crazy one. We even called it ?the worst idea.? ? She laughs again, and covers her face with her hands. ?As artists we wanted something that took us out of our comfort zones,? she explains. ?Just being raw actors. It?s not the safest idea. But life is short.?
Their travel: “We travel often to Asia, Africa, Europe, where they were born. The boys know they?re from Southeast Asia, and they have their food and their music and their friends, and they have a pride particular to them. But I want them to be just as interested in the history of their sisters? countries and Mommy?s country so we don?t start dividing. Instead of taking Z on a special trip, we all go to Africa and we have a great time.?
Angelina & Brad aren’t really as screwed up as their By the Sea characters: ?It?s not autobiographical. Brad and I have our issues but if the characters? were even remotely close to our problems we couldn?t have made the film.?
Having her breasts & ovaries removed: ?It really connected me to other women,? she says of her decision to go public. ?I wish my mom had been able to make those choices.? The procedures themselves were, she says, ?brutal. It?s hard. They are not easy surgeries. The ovaries are an easy surgery, but the hormone changes??she laughs, nods her head??interesting. We did joke that I had my Monday edit. Tuesday surgery. Wednesday go into menopause. Thursday come back to edit, a little funky with my steps. I feel grounded as a woman. I know others do too. Both of the women in my family, my mother and my grandmother started dying in their 40s. I?m 40. I can?t wait to hit 50 and know I made it.?

The paparazzi literally took a million photos of Angelina Jolie and her two youngest children yesterday. Jolie took twins Knox and Vivienne to BookStar in Studio City yesterday. This book-buying excursion was possibly part of Viv and Knox?s birthday celebrations ? the twins turned 7 YEARS OLD (!!!) on July 12. It seems like only yesterday that Angelina posed with the twins on the cover of People Magazine.
Anyway, because there were so many photographers and fans waiting outside, we basically have every angle of Jolie and the kids leaving the bookstore. It seems like both kids got to pick out a lot of stuff and both are carrying big, heavy-looking bags. I wonder if BookStar is the kind of kid-friendly bookstore that not only sells kids? books, but educational toys and stuffed animals and stuff?
What else? Knox has gotten a haircut since I last saw him, although he seems to prefer to keep his hair kind of surfer-shaggy. Viv still strikes me as a mama?s girl ? she always seems to want to stick close to her mom no matter what. Knox, to me, looks just like a mini-Brad, but Vivienne is an interesting mix of both parents. Both kids are going to be ridiculously good-looking when they grow up.
I still loathe Angelina?s nude flats. I hope she discussed ugly shoewear when she met Duchess Kate, because they both have an affinity for really ugly nude shoes.

I?m very much an Angelina Jolie fan. I love her. That?s not news to anyone. But even I can admit that Angelina has some faults. One of those faults? She?s really not very good at accent work. I?ll admit that I didn?t think her English accent ? mainly in Lara Croft ? was all that bad, but her accent work in Alexander has probably gone down as one of the worst accents in film history. Part of the problems with that film is that no one really knew what Queen Olympias sounded like, so Angelina sort of made it up as she went along and the result was? very hokey. I bring this up because Angelina has apparently bought the rights to a book about Catherine the Great of Russia, likely because Angelina wants to play Catherine. Now think about Angelina doing some kind of old-timey Russian accent. You just cringed, didn?t you?
Angelina Jolie is set to play the nymphomaniac Catherine the Great in a new drama about the Russian empress?s scandalous love life. The Oscar-winner has bought the rights to British historian Simon Sebag Montefiore?s bestselling book about Catherine?s ?secret? and very open marriage to the flamboyant and ambitious Grigory Potemkin.
The character is something of a dream come true for Jolie, who has made no secret of her quest for meaty female roles. She played Queen Olympias in Oliver Stone?s 2004 Alexander The Great biopic and the title role in last year?s Maleficent ? and has been on the lookout for another regal role ever since. Sebag Montefiore said: ?I am thrilled that Angelina has optioned the book because it was my first book and it was very much a labour of love. Catherine is the ultimate feminist hero. I feel very safe with Angelina in charge of it.?
His book, Catherine The Great And Potemkin: The Imperial Love Affair, was published in 2000 and drew on 5,000 previously unpublished love letters between the pair. Catherine ascended the Russian throne in 1762 following a coup in which her husband, Tsar Peter III, was murdered. Potemkin was one of the conspirators and Catherine?s enemies always claimed she was involved in the Tsar?s death. The Empress ? whose 27-year reign is regarded as a golden era in Russian history ? was also a sexually liberated woman who embarked on affairs with countless men. Her enemies used her sexual conquests against her and branded her a nymphomaniac. But the highly educated Catherine was particularly infatuated with Potemkin, with whom she enjoyed secret trysts in the sauna of St Petersburg?s Winter Palace.
The couple, who were alleged to have married in secret, became co-rulers of the Russian Empire.
Sebag Montefiore said: ?Catherine and Potemkin had history?s greatest love affair. They were both brilliant people who were totally equal and totally balanced. They were the great loves of each other?s lives and, in effect, they were one of the most successful political couples in the whole of history. By comparison, Antony and Cleopatra were a disaster whose relationship ended with failure and suicide.?
He added that Potemkin ?was a wild character who ruled like a sultan. He travelled with gardens which were planted every night by thousands of serfs?.
How much Jolie?s production company paid for the rights is being kept a commercial secret, but one source described it as a ?high five-figure sum?.
Jolie was first linked to the role of Catherine the Great in a separate movie mooted more than a decade ago, but that never materialised. And although the actress is being linked to the role in this new production, it is also possible that she might prefer to remain behind the camera as producer. She has already directed two films, including last year?s Unbroken, and she has made no secret of the fact that she is considering giving up acting.

So, she might not even star. Although who would play Catherine then? Cate Blanchett? What would it look like to see a Catherine the Great film directed by Angelina and starring La Blanchett? That would be interesting. But if Angelina wants to play Catherine, I suspect she will. I?ve been looking up portraits of Grigory Potemkin to see if I can figure out who I would dream-cast in the role and I?m at a loss. Go here to see what the real Potemkin looked like. Like, Paul Giamatti would play that role in a real-world situation. And yes, I think Giamatti is sexy but I?m obviously very weird. Considering how bloated Leonardo DiCaprio is these days, he could easily play Potemkin. OMG. Jolie and DiCaprio? That would be???????

Coming off her successful and swift(y) campaign to change Apple?s music streaming policy, Taylor Swift is riding high. She?s about to kick off the European leg of her tour in England, so she sat down with ITV for an exclusive interview. She ended up chatting about where she sees herself ten years from now, when she?s 35 years old. Apparently, she wants to be like Angelina Jolie when she grows up! Tay-Tay, I feel you.
Taylor tells ITV News that she hopes to have a family by then, but also admits she does worry about protecting her children due to her fame. Swift also said that she’s long admired Angelina Jolie, who is definitely one who knows what it’s like to raise a large brood under the spotlight.
But her admiration stems more for Angelina’s ability to live “her life not just for the purpose of making money or coming up with the most lucrative business deals,” but for what she can give back.
Swift had a slightly different idea in her mind when it came to her future and kids while talking to InStyle last year.
“I don’t know if I’ll have kids,” she told the magazine at the time. “It’s impossible not to picture certain scenarios and how you would try to convince them that they have a normal life when, inevitably, there will be strange men pointing giant cameras at them from the time they are babies.”

It?s true, Angelina Jolie isn?t playing the game at this point for the money, if it ever was about the money for Angelina. Even when Angelina has taken big modeling contracts (like Louis Vuitton), the money goes to charity. Taylor is pretty charitable too and she gives back in major ways, more than many of her pop star contemporaries, although she?s got a ways to go before she reaches Jolie-like proportions. So? what do you think? Do you like Taylor more because she?s becoming a Brangeloonie? Or is that a dealbreaker?
Meanwhile, following the Apple Music streaming thing, Taylor got blasted by a photographer who claims that Taylor is such a control freak that she demands the rights to all photos taken by tour photographers on her tours. Taylor?s rep responded to those accusations, basically saying that Taylor ? like Beyonce! ? just wants approval over which photos are used/sold. As in, she?s very controlling about her image, but the photographer still has the copyright. I think that whole debate ? whether it?s Beyonce or Swifty or anyone else ? is stupid on so many levels. For one, if you?re a photographer signing on to be a tour photographer, of course you?re going to have to work with the artists, for better or for worse. Secondly, some of these artists are too control-freaky for their own good.
