A few days ago, Katy Perry confirmed that she?s going to be a judge on the newly rebooted American Idol, which will be on ABC now (not Fox). While I don?t watch those singing competition shows, I know that it?s a good move for many rock stars and pop stars to sign on to judge those things. Jennifer Lopez?s judging gig on the now-defunct version of AI revitalized her career at the time. Blake Shelton is now a massive country-crossover star because of his gig on The Voice. Gwen Stefani?s career has been revitalized too, and on and on. So, I don?t hate that Katy Perry negotiated her way into a historic paycheck for the new AI: she?s apparently getting $25 million to be the competition’s lead judge. TMZ reported that Katy had ?all the leverage? because ABC needed a huge name to announce ahead of their Upfronts, and that Katy rejected an offer of $20 million before ABC pleaded with her to take $25 million. For comparison, J.Lo got $15 million a season when she was on AI. And Katy?s proud that she negotiated her way into such a great paycheck too. When asked about it during a radio interview yesterday, this is what Katy said:
“I’m really proud that, as a woman, I got paid. And you know why? I got paid like more than like pretty much any guy that’s been on that show. And, by the way, I love men. So I’m a paid woman and I’m ready for a beautiful man. I really wanted to join this show at the right time. I always have. We’ve always been in negotiations for several years?it’s never been right, but now when they kind of like brought it to a new home?it’s perfect. I’m going to be the same judge I’ve always been and I’m not judgy. I [give] constructive criticism. The reality is I am polite, but firm and I am super realistic.”

I?m proud of her for getting paid too. Good for you, Katy. My first reaction was to wonder how many dudes she has negotiating on her behalf, but that?s neither here nor there. Katy would have been the one to decide to walk away when they offered her $20 million, and she was probably advised by her manager and lawyers and everybody that she should just accept their offer.
Also: the conservative media is having a field day with another interview from Katy, where she was asked about the Manchester terrorist attack. She said:
“I think the greatest thing we can do now is unite as people, as fan bases, all of it. Whatever we say behind people’s backs, the Internet can be a little bit ruthless as far as fan bases go but I think that the greatest thing we can do is just unite and love on each other. No barriers, no borders, we all just need to co-exist.”

As I said, conservative media is in full meltdown mode because she dared to say ?no borders.? Like, Katy is not an elected official. She?s not running for office. She?s not advising any elected official. She?s a pop star reacting to a terrorist attack at a pop music concert and she?s trying to offer a message of peace and coexistence. And now she?s going to have to deal with a million Russian-bot MAGA Twitter accounts screaming at her for days.

I am too old to appreciate Coachella. I did the music festival ?thing? back in the 90s (I saw Sugar Ray more than any person should, but it was just that…music. Festivals like Coachella seem to be more about ?seeing and being seen? than the music itself. The festival fashion, especially displayed by the celebrities, has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. And, speaking of fashion, Katy Perry used the event to promote her new line of shoes.
The 32-year-old singer threw a ?recovery brunch? on Easter Sunday to promote her footwear line, Katy Perry Footwear. In the spirit of the holiday she wore a see-through white knit ensemble, complete with bunny slippers from her footwear line and a matching purse.
Katy, who recently ended her relationship with Orlando Bloom, was reportedly in good spirits, posing for pictures with socialite Lady Victoria Hervey (yes, I had to Google her) and dancing with DJ Mia Moretti. Mia joined other notable guests including Adam Lambert and Moschinodesigner Jeremy Scott at the event. Katy was spotted with Mia and Jeremy at Moschino?s Candy Crush Desert Party the night before, so I?m sure it was a true recovery brunch for some people.
Katy?s ex, Orlando Bloom, was also at Coachella. The actor, and your dream paddleboard date, has been linked to Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev, although a source tells PEOPLE Magazine that their relationship is currently at ?super casual? status. How casual is ?super casual?? Apparently, it?s so casual that the 40-year-old Orlando was ?all over? 31-year-old model Ashley Hass at the music fest during the Neon Carnival event on Saturday while Nina was just a few feet away.
Another source told PEOPLE that the pair is ?not exclusive? and that Orlando isn?t on the market for a new girlfriend, preferring to stay single for the time being. The source went on to say that ?Orlando is doing great? and that he and Nina, who have known each other for a long time are simply ?having fun.? Hey, they?re young, I say let ?em have fun. You don?t have to bounce from one relationship to another (don?t I know that?) Katy seems to be doing okay. Not crazy about the outfit, and I really am not a fan of the blonde pixie cut on her, but, as someone who completely changed her look after a breakup (or two), I can totally relate. Cute shoes, though.

Sometimes we forget, well, at least I do, that celebrities can have the same insecurities as you and me. And it’s really hard for me to picture Katy Perry as someone who has ever had an insecure moment in her life, but she’s gone and proven me wrong.
The 32-year-old singer posted quite the throwback pic on Instagram on April Fool’s Day, clad in a sports bra and gym shorts, makeup-free and rocking some crazy, disheveled hair. She captioned the pre-2K snap, “I’m proud to announce the cover for my 4th album!” adding, “Happy April Fools! Been plotting in the same type of sports bra from my IM and laminated calendar since 99? It’s all about the long game…”

In my youth, I kissed a lot of boys with this haircut. It?s the ?skater boy haircut? from the 1990s. And I still don?t know how I feel about this haircut making a comeback right now, for women. I think I might hate it? These are photos of Katy Perry at the iHeartRadio Music Awards last night. This was Katy?s first big appearance since the announcement that she and Orlando Bloom had broken up. Kate has spent the past few weeks (seemingly post-split) making some radical changes to her hair, from black to blonde, and then from blonde to brown, then from longer hair to a choppy lob, then from a choppy lob to what we see now, Skater Boy ?90s Hair. Miley Cyrus did this too. Kate Gosselin did it back in the day. Scarlett Johansson has had similar hair for a while as well. So what does Katy say about her new haircut?
?Well yeah, if you?re going this extreme it should, hello! I?m trying to get more attention, obviously. You can just grow it back. Honestly, I tried to take my full head of hair platinum and I had a lot of breakage. I?ve always wanted to look like Miley Cyrus. I?ve always wanted to have that pixie haircut, so I said, ?Let?s just go for it.’ I feel like there?s a new wave, a new authentic vibe coming in and I think this matches. I want to redefine what it means to be feminine. Look at Scarlett Johansson, who?s one of the most beautiful women in the world. We have the same haircut and I saw her at an Oscars party and was like, ?I?m doing it.? You?re hot, you can be hot and look great with this kind of hair. Why not??

Well, at least she?s not pretending that she invented the haircut or whatever, although I think the ?redefining feminine? comment is pretty eye-rolly. I spent much of 2016 defending Katy, but between her comments about Britney Spears and how she?s behaving post-breakup, I kind of think Katy needs to chill a bit. Women have been ?redefining feminine? with short hair for decades, from Audrey Hepburn to Twiggy to Princess Diana. Chill, Katy. Also: her pantsuit (YES THESE ARE PANTS!) is by August Getty.
What else happened at the iHeartRadio Awards? Bruno Mars performed. So did Shawn Mendes, who annoys me. And Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop This Feeling!” won an award and JT tried to make it about LGBTQ kids and kids who feel different.
“I wrote this song because I wanted it to be about inclusion, about being together. And so I guess I want to take this opportunity and speak to young people right now ’cause there’s a lot of you looking at me, if you are black or you are brown or you are gay or you’re a lesbian or you are trans, or maybe you’re just a sissy singing boy from Tennessee, anyone that is treating you unkindly, it’s only because they are afraid or have been taught to be afraid of how important you are…Because being different means you make the difference,” added Timberlake, who ended his speech with an expletive that was bleeped.

Much like Katy, I feel like JT is sort of riding on a decade?s worth of activism. I mean, it?s a good message and I?m sure there are a lot of kids out there who appreciate hearing that from Justin Timberlake. But does it feel like a bandwagon-jumping pander? Sort of.

Here are some photos from Sunday night?s Vanity Fair Oscar party. Tons of people came out for the VF party, so we?re going to devote many posts to Oscar-party fashion posts. Here?s Katy Perry in Jean Paul Gaultier, which I surprisingly do not hate. Usually I find Gaultier rather overworked and silly, but this looks great on her. I?m still not liking the blonde on her though. She shouldn?t necessarily go back to black, but this shade of blonde isn?t working. Also: Orlando Bloom attended this party too, but they didn?t pose together on the carpet.
Sofia Vergara in Michael Kors. This gown has been around for a while – Piper Perabo wore a version of this as her wedding gown, and Jennifer Lopez and Naomi Campbell have worn this dress too. That being said, I like this on Sofia. She?s usually busting out of some mermaid dress, so it?s nice to see her in something different. Her date was her husband Joe Manganiello.
Jon Hamm was there! He looks good.
Jerry Hall and Rupert Murdoch attended the party. Jerry looks pretty happy. While I?m sure Murdoch is an evil bastard in business and in general, he seems to adore Jerry.
Alessandra Ambrosio in Ralph & Russo. Ugh, she?s so try-hard.

2016 was the year I finally got on the Katy Perry Train. I?d always been sort of meh on her as an artist and as a celebrity. But it felt like she grew up, got political, put her time and money where her mouth is, and generally started taking no prisoners. I also think she came out ahead, long-term, with the whole Taylor Swift thing, but other people are free to disagree. In any case, I was looking forward to Katy?s next chapter and I had high hopes for her new album. But the first single kind of sucks (it?s just too generic-pop) and I?m not liking her new ?look? either. Her hair looks so much like Khloe Kardashian?s hair. And Katy?s Tom Ford dress at the Grammys was? no bueno. It was super-unflattering and I couldn?t even believe it was Tom Ford. She just looks like a Real Housewife now. Ugh.
I feel like I?m so old but I have zero idea why I should care about Kelsea Ballerini or the way she spells her name (KELSEA are you joking?). But here she is. She looks a bit like Elisabeth Moss, right? She wore Ines di Santo. I don?t hate it? It feels like something Taylor Swift would have worn five years ago.
Camila Cabello is famous for being one part of Fifth Harmony? before she split with the group last year, in what was an absorbing drama for tweens. This was Camila?s ?first time? at the Grammys as a solo celebrity, and her fans were waiting for her. Like, I saw so much stuff about her on Twitter, and I was sitting there like, ?Really? The Fifth Harmony girl?? Anyway, Camila wore this MIRI Couture gown which? seems a bit princess-y for the Grammys. It?s rock and roll, not the Golden Globes! (Also, this looks like a mall dress, which is probably on-brand for her.)

Here are some photos of Katy Perry at the 12th Annual UNICEF Snowflake Ball. Katy was being honored by UNICEF because after just a few years as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, she?s already raised $1 million for the non-profit. For the event, Katy once again chose a Marchesa dress, and I have no idea why. Katy is a big deal and she probably has tons of great designers vying to dress her. But she keeps going to Marchesa. While this gown isn?t the worst Marchesa piece I?ve ever seen, it still gives off a cheap vibe, like it?s a prom dress from the mall. No disrespect to mall-bought prom dresses, but I expect more from Katy.
Katy?s date for the evening was Orlando Bloom, her boyfriend of some-odd eleven months. While there were rumors that Orly and Katy had split in the weeks following the election, they?re still happening. They spent Thanksgiving together. And now Entertainment Tonight is trying to make it sound like they?re engaged! ET got some exclusive photos of Katy and Orlando out to dinner a few nights ago ? go here to see. Katy looks like she?s wearing a giant canary diamond ring on her engagement hand. But in these photos from the UNICEF Snowflake Ball, the ring is nowhere to be seen. Hm.
As for Katy?s honor, she was given the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award at this event. The award was presented to her by Hillary Clinton! Katy was #WithHer-ing for the Clinton campaign for more than a year, performing at the DNC and several major Clinton rallies. It was nice of Hillary Clinton to come out and support Katy. Hillary told the crowd:
?On a personal level, I cannot tell you how delighted I am to be here to help celebrate a global megastar. I have seen Katy?s commitment to the causes she believes in firsthand. I?ve gotten to spend time with her and I know how deeply she cares about making our world a better place. She is serious about understanding the complex problems we face and pulling people together to solve them. We need champions like Katy now more than ever: her passion, her energy and, yes, her voice, louder than a lion.?
Perry received the award after raising more than a $1 Million for UNICEF and serving as an ambassador for the global nonprofit for the past few years. Perry tossed the glowing compliments right back at the former Secretary of State with her acceptance speech: ?I?ve always had a voice ? a singing voice ? but I?ve never had a voice like I?ve had before. Hillary has lit that voice inside of me, and that light will never go out, it will continue to get brighter and brighter and brighter. Thank you Hillary.?

This honestly has me tearing up. GAH. Who would have thought that a Katy Perry story would have me all emotional? But it?s so painful to think of all of these young women who really believed in Hillary Clinton and female empowerment. It?s painful to think of what all of those young women have been shown about the reality of the world with Donald Trump?s victory.
