Last week, Apple announced that they would be launching a free three-month trial period for Apple Music?s streaming service. The problem? Giving users three months of free music meant that for three months, musicians weren?t going to be paid by Apple. Taylor Swift took up the cause, because she?s been very outspoken about the need for streaming companies (like Spotify) to pay artists fairly for their music. Swifty ended up writing an open letter to Apple on her Tumblr, explaining why she would not be allowing Apple to include her album 1989 on Apple?s streaming service. Here?s part of what she wrote (you can read the full piece here):
I write this to explain why I?ll be holding back my album, 1989, from the new streaming service, Apple Music. I feel this deserves an explanation because Apple has been and will continue to be one of my best partners in selling music and creating ways for me to connect with my fans. I respect the company and the truly ingenious minds that have created a legacy based on innovation and pushing the right boundaries.
I?m sure you are aware that Apple Music will be offering a free 3 month trial to anyone who signs up for the service. I?m not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months. I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company.
This is not about me. Thankfully I am on my fifth album and can support myself, my band, crew, and entire management team by playing live shows. This is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success. This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt. This is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create, just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field?but will not get paid for a quarter of a year?s worth of plays on his or her songs.
These are not the complaints of a spoiled, petulant child. These are the echoed sentiments of every artist, writer and producer in my social circles who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much. We simply do not respect this particular call.

And surprisingly ? or perhaps not so much ? Taylor is so powerful that with one Tumblr post, she was able to change Apple?s policy. Can you believe that? Apple executive Eddy Cue (senior vice president of internet services and software) tweeted to Swifty: ?Apple will always make sure that artist are paid #iTunes #AppleMusic? #AppleMusic will pay artist for streaming, even during customer?s free trial period? We hear you @taylorswift13 and indie artists. Love, Apple.?
Cue also did an interview with Billboard, saying that it was Swifty?s open letter that really changed his mind. Swifty also released a statement, saying: “I am elated and relieved. Thank you for your words of support today. They listened to us.”
For what it?s worth, I don?t think Swifty is being ?spoiled and petulant? here. She?s arguably the most powerful woman/person in music today and when it comes to how she handles the business side of her career, I have no shade. Yes, she?s motivated by self-interest and she genuinely wants to be paid, but as she says, most of her money is coming from touring anyway. She?s standing up for herself AND for lesser known artists who need whatever revenue they can find.

As we discussed yesterday, Taylor Swift and her boyfriend (!!!) Calvin Harris had a ?date night? on Tuesday. They got pap?d in a big way outside of Taylor?s apartment, they went out to dinner and then they went back to her place. Calvin spent the night, which does sort of ruin the ?EW, BOYS!? vibe Tay-Tay was trying to rock over the past year. Still, it?s nice to see her in a somewhat stable relationship. I?m including some photos of Taylor leaving her apartment on Wednesday, presumably after a night of Scottish passion with Calvin (he left separately in the morning). Oh, and in case you?re wondering, Taylor?s date-night outfit is reasonably affordable: the skirt and crop-top are by Aqua, with the top at $48 and the skirt at $68. Of course she paired the ensemble with expensive shoes and a Prada bag though. And here are some eye-rolly details about the date:
Taylor Swift is mixing business with pleasure. The singer, who just so happens to be New York City’s ambassador for tourism, took her Scottish boyfriend Calvin Harris to dinner at L’asso on Kenmare St. and Mott St. Tuesday night, E! News can confirm. The “Bad Blood” singer, 25, and the music producer, 31, selected a corner booth in the back of the pizza place. “The place had about 15 tables, so it was very small and intimate,” a fellow patron says. An AQUA-clad Swift ordered a glass of white wine, while Harris drank water.
“They ordered a salad and then two gluten-free pizzas. Before the food came they were holding hands and they were really engaged with each other. You can tell they were totally a couple and so into one another. They laughed and were talking throughout the night,” the diner says of the stars, who met in February. “When the pizza came, Taylor served Calvin a slice of pizza on his plate then gave herself one.”
At one point, Swift took out her phone and showed it to Harris. “She took his hand towards the end and put it close to her heart,” the diner says. “It was a sincere gesture.” Harris paid the bill, and the new couple headed home around 11 p.m.
“As they were leaving, they were holding hands,” the patron tells E! News.
Since taking their romance public earlier this year, Swift and Harris have been spotted getting cozy all over the U.S., in cities like L.A., Las Vegas and Nashville. Because of their busy schedules?Swift will take her 1989 World Tour to Detroit this Saturday, while Harris will perform at Wet Republic in Las Vegas?the two must travel to see one another. As two of the biggest musicians in the world, they’re used to that kind of schedule.
“Aside from the incredible chemistry, here [is] a woman that really understood Calvin’s world and vice versa,” a source recently told E! News. “She’s funny and a good person and Calvin’s very charismatic.”
“Women throw themselves at him,” a friend of Harris’ said of the “Summer” producer. “He can never tell if they are really interested in him as a person or if the attention is just because of his fame and fortune. But when he met Taylor, it was different. For the first time in a long time here was someone who was his equal. They have a mutual respect for one another. They understand one another. They are on the same level and that’s been a good starting point for both of them.”

All of this talk about how they ?understand? each other?s schedules and how much they enjoy spending time together, all that does is convince me that when this blows up, it will be spectacularly messy. And funny, of course. But for now, I?m enjoying it. ?She took his hand towards the end and put it close to her heart?? My God. Then tears filled her eyes and she whispered, ?You are the cat-father I?ve been looking for this whole time.?

Taylor Swift?s thing with Calvin Harris is actually the longest relationship she?s had in a while. Let?s be generous and say that this has been happening since late February/early March. That?s a solid three-month relationship without Calvin dumping her over the phone, or without Tay-Tay flying all over the place to stalk Calvin. Could this be? a mature relationship?! Well, it?s seemingly more mature than Taylor?s last two relationships, with Harry Styles and poor Conor Kennedy (God, remember how she would sign Conor out of prep school so they could have sex in quaint New England bed & breakfasts?)
Anyway, Calvin and Swifty stepped out last night for a ?date night? in NYC. They?ve been photographed together off and on, but it feels like this kind of outing is a new step. The paparazzi frenzy must have been crazy outside of Swifty?s apartment building! They do sort of look like brother and sister too, but I have to say? I?m still sort of into them as a couple. It?s going to be a hot mess when they break up. Here?s what I really wonder: do Olivia and Meredith consider Calvin to be their new daddy? Or is he Uncle Calvin?
Meanwhile, Taylor has made her first appearance on Forbes? annual World?s Most Powerful Women list. Swifty is the youngest woman on the list and she came in at #65. Oprah was #12, Beyonce is #21, Anna Wintour is #28, Angelina Jolie is #54 and Sofia Vergara is #57. You can see Forbes? coverage here.

Here are some photos of Taylor Swift performing in Louisiana last week. Her tour has started, and I think she?s organized it a lot like her Red Tour, which is to say that Tay-Tay is mostly performing in clusters on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and then she has the rest of the week off. It?s a pretty smart way to tour, especially if you?re a big pop star and you have your own plane and everything. Taylor did an interview with BBC1 this week where she talked about how ?easy? it is to be a touring pop star. Sure?
Being a pop star is really not a bad gig?just ask Taylor Swift! The ex-country singer, 25, told BBC Radio 1?s Nick Grimshaw that touring the world “is not that hard. I’m telling you now it’s really not?Sometimes I really don’t think it’s that hard at all?When I was starting out I’d go on tour for three months and I was gone for three months. Now almost 10 years in, thank God we get to play bigger shows so I don’t have to play as many. If we’re playing stadiums, I’ll do two or three a week, not five shows a week, then I get to fly home in between. It’s not that bad.”
But while Taylor thinks the globetrotting life of a pop star is “made out to be harder than it is,” there is one part she struggles with…As she told BBC Radio 1, “I do have to leave the cats behind when I leave the country, which is the hardest part.”
But Meredith Grey and Olivia Benson surely understand their mama’s got a job to do! Taylor loves this gig, too. “That’s the best part of this [touring], when you walk off stage and you’re drenched in sweat and you’re tired and your legs hurt,” she said. “It feels like you’re really working for the job. It’s nice to feel tired after a show. I’m like ‘Oh my God, I’m finally doing something.’”
And how does Taylor reward herself for all this hard work? With some TV time, of course! “I really like the feeling of: ‘You know what? I’ve been busy. I deserve this watching two hours of TV at the end of the night.’ I like Friends because I’ve seen every episode, so it’s like switching my brain off. I know exactly what they’re about to say.”

Taylor should watch cooking shows when she wants to turn her brain off. That?s what I do ? I find cooking shows so relaxing, even when they?re not making food that I particularly want to eat. The Barefoot Contessa is probably the best one to watch after a busy day. But yes, reruns are great for relaxing too.
As for Taylor and how she finds touring so easy these days? a few points. One, from what I understand, Taylor isn?t doing really crazy, intensive dancing like some other pop stars (Beyonce). But unlike some pop stars (Britney), I believe Taylor is attempting to sing most of her songs live. Does she have backing tracks? I?m sure. But she actually is trying to give her fans a live experience. Now, all that being said? of course it?s ?easy? to be a touring pop star when you only do two shows a week, everything is expertly managed and you have a private plane to fly home after every show. I wonder who takes care of Meredith and Olivia while Tay is gone?
