Taylor still hasn’t used her platform to promote the #FreeKesha movement, but it appears Kesha and her family are more than grateful for this act of kindness.
Last night, Kesha’s mother shared her thanks. “Taylor Swift has just generously donated $250,000 to Kesha, as a show of support during this difficult time,” she tweeted. “AMAZING!!”

Let?s get the superficial stuff out of the way first. Taylor Swift was set to own this year?s Grammys ? she was one of the top-nominated artists, she was widely expected to win at least one of the big awards (which happened), and she?s one of the biggest things in music today. So why choose this Versace two-piece? Why try to dominate the conversation with a new haircut which is neither flattering nor cute? Every time Taylor tried to walk in this hot Pink mullet skirt, the skirt billowed open revealing Taylor?s matching panties, and there was some bagginess there which made it look like she was wearing a diaper. As for the hair? it looks like Anna Wintour?s exact haircut. Taylor IS one of this year?s Met Gala co-chairs, so maybe that?s it? I?m all for Taylor getting a short haircut, you know, I just don?t think this is the cut.
Taylor?s date last night was her BFF Selena Gomez, which was cute. Selena wore a Calvin Klein gown and Selena seemed to have pre-gamed pretty hard, like she seemed sort of baked on the red carpet. Selena was just there as a presenter and Taylor?s date, and it seemed like they spent the whole night gossiping and having fun, which is cool. If you?re wondering why Calvin Harris did not escort his girlfriend? E! News says Calvin and Taylor are fine, they?re not breaking up, he was just in the studio and couldn?t get away, and Taylor was always going to bring Selena as her date.
As for Taylor?s opening? she did ?Out of the Woods,? which (just my opinion) isn?t her strongest song off of 1989. The whole thing felt very jazz-handy and LIZA WITH A Z.

Then when Taylor won Album of the Year, she decided to say something directly about the Kanye West situation:
“I want to say to all the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, some day when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there and that will be the greatest feeling in the world.”
I?m totally fine with Taylor framing the issue this way, and speaking to young women about her experiences being underestimated, being publicly slammed, and having Kanye West take credit for her fame. I even enjoy the fact that she basically calls Kanye a sideshow. But? did she and Kanye ever have dinner and talk about his album or what? I guess this is Taylor?s denial that it ever happened.

The O Magazine people sent us the cover for the January issue along with some quotes from Oprah on teaming up with Weight Watchers. (Sidenote: I can’t believe it’s almost the holidays! This year went so fast.) As you probably know, Oprah bought 10% of Weight Watchers back in October, causing their stock to rally. Oprah still has the midas touch despite the Own Network not being the smashing success she expected. In the upcoming issue of O, Oprah explains why she invested in Weight Watchers and how it’s helping her personally:

?Now repeat after me: Here?s to good health. To the new year. To simply (or not so simply) deciding to be happy. To finally getting motivated.?
On why using Weight Watchers works for her:
I?ve wishy-washed with diets and exercise my whole life. Now I?m ready to go beyond the scale and declare a new way of being in the world. The folks at Weight Watchers called me in July and asked if I?d join their team?help spread the message about taking a holistic approach to health and fitness. For me, this was a perfect alignment. I was fed up with my lose-and-gain-again routine. I?d had enough of no-carb regimens. Some people can live without bread and pasta, but it just doesn?t make sense to me. All the times I tried to do so only made me crave them more. I wanted a plan for life, and here it was in the form of Weight Watchers. For me, this is not a diet. It?s a whole shift in perspective. So yes, for sure, I?m a bona fide convert.

I can relate to this as a yo-yo dieter, but I have to say that Weight Watchers, while ranked the most effective commercial weight loss program, was not as easy for me as just counting calories with MyFitnessPal. I lost weight on Weight Watchers in 2010, gained it back and then tried to go on WW again in 2013. At that point they had switched from their original system to PointsPlus, which gives you “free” points for fruits and vegetables. I wasn’t losing weight with that and didn’t lose weight until I switched to counting calories with MFP and including fruits and vegetables again.
Weight Watchers is decidedly better than most other paid diet plans, but so many people are realizing the science and facts behind weight loss and why Weight Watchers works: eat less calories than you burn and you will lose weight. (Yes some foods help you feel more satiated etc., but you do not have to give up your favorite foods if you eat within your TDEE.) People think that “diet” means giving up whole food groups and sweets and I like that Weight Watchers teaches portion control and moderation, which is key. There are so many fad diets and so much misinformation, and WW is definitely better and more practical than most plans, but it works because of calories. Points are just calories by another measurement, but when it’s so simple to enter your food into a free app, why use points? (I guess it’s nice to have support in meetings, but I’m not a joiner.)
If Oprah is going to invest in a weight loss program, and use one, she may as well choose Weight Watchers, it’s effective and doesn’t mislead people like other plans. It just seems to be losing market share now that everyone is discovering the free apps.
Oprah is doing a tour of Australia called “An Evening With Oprah.” There are all sorts of quotes from her in the press, including the fact that she seems to adore Taylor Swift, calls her “a true great role model,” and praises how Taylor handles herself in the spotlight. Oprah is angling for Taylor to do a guest stint on one of her shows, you just know it.

I?m trying to figure out what Vogue Australia did to poor Taylor Swift. Is this a total Photoshop disaster? While I think that Vogue Australia definitely morphed her face with someone else (Karlie Kloss?!), I also think that Taylor?s pale lip is throwing everything off. We?re so used to see her with red lips, I forget what she looks like with pale taupe-pink lipstick. And I think at this point, we just have to acknowledge the fact that even the greatest stylists in the world are clueless about what they should do with Swifty?s bangs. They?re so bad, you guys. Anyway, here are some highlights from the interview:
How she gets famous people to show up on stage at her concerts: ?I?ll approach them and say: ?I?ll fly you to a city on the tour, I?ll fly you there and back.? Part of being an entertainer is to try and show people something that?s going to confuse them, delight them, surprise them.?
Her squad: ?My friendship group is one of my favourite things about my life right now. Our friends really have each others? back. It?s the first time in my life that I?ve had anything strong like that in the friendship department. A lot of the time I?ll reach out to people to tell them they?re great and a friendship will come out of them. Ella and I ? Lorde ? we met on our own because her album came out and I sent her flowers and told her it was great and now she?s one of my best friends. Friendship often comes from admiration and that feels like a natural way to be friends with someone because you?ve established you respect what the person does.?
She knows the public could turn on her: “The public could change their minds about me tomorrow. Things are good right now but I’m never going to be stupid, foolish or ignorant enough to think I have control over the public. All I can control is making good music. I am so lucky that people seem to like me right now but in no way, shape or form is it a permanent thing. And I think being aware of that is what keeps you on the game.”
She?ll take a break after she finishes her tour in Australia in December: ?Then I?ll feel like I?ll need to give people a breather from me.?

I think she?s smart to be aware enough that the public could turn on her. You know why? Because they already did once and it was because of something Taylor herself did. The backlash started, thrived briefly and then ended when Taylor decided to whitesplain her Taylor-centric version of feminism to Nicki Minaj back in July. Almost everyone thought Minaj was in the right, and when Taylor piped up, there were many stories critical of Taylor. If Taylor hadn?t done her damage control, it could have been a lot worse.
PS… The British tabloids started a rumor that Taylor broke up with Calvin Harris over the weekend. People Magazine rather definitively says that they’re still on though.
